  1. I walk into the Fire Barn in Waterloo last night at 8. They have about 40 TVs. Not a single one tuned into the Gopher game. Many TVs set to soccer and hockey.

Zero interest in Nebraska basketball. Uncle Moose will figure that out real quick. Yeah big crowd at PBA, but that’s it.

After Moos hires a new football coach, he will turn his full attention to men’s basketball. I fully expect him to be at the UNL game in Omaha. He will also attend their home games. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he spent quality time with Ras while in Omaha. Regent and CU Director Howard Hawks is at the game too.

Moos will notice the energy at the Link. He will then compare it to PBA. He will also note the beer revenue. Moos will then conclude that beer revenue could fund his termination of Miles, but convincing the Regents and Unicam is a tall order.

Mac likes Tim but how can he keep this team under 100? Scurry is a better player than the Corn’s starters. Another crushing defeat for Timmy.

Miles will have a miserable season. The team can’t score. Michigan State will pound them. Many blow outs. Even though the Big Ten is not that good this year, UNL will be at the bottom fighting Penn State and Rutgers for last.

It has not been all that fun against the Huskers lately. They have become Alcorn State or SIUE. They need to get better so that beating them becomes more meaningful. It will also help our RPI.

To that end, I can see Ras talking freely and candidly with his UNL counterpart. Recall his friendship with Dr. Tom. Ras knows what the college game is really about: generating interest and excitement which, in turn, creates revenue. And, of course, Bruce knows basketball. Ras will recommend Jacobsen at UNI to Moos. A good fit.

Moos earned his spurs at Oregon. He knows that good football and basketball are important; especially for revenue.

Unless Miles qualifies for the NCAA tournament, he is gone. A new broom sweeps clean

Saw this on the Creighton message board.

Please leave this thread here. No one will see it in the basketball forum.

The point here is that the ROT created by the former AD is massive and many changes need to be made soon. Miles, for sure, and maybe the women’s basketball coach. I say bring back Yori.

  4. Men:

It is no secret that this is my final game as your head coach here at Nebraska. Not only is it my final game here, it probably ends my career in football. Since  I was your age, my entire work life has been football and I have loved nearly every minute of it. I’ve had my ups and downs, but the downs have been few. And the pay and perks have been great.

I asked myself what would motivate this team. Hatred for the bordering state of Iowa is foolishness. Trying to win the vaunted Hy-Vee Heroes Trophy has no appeal to you. That’s all fake. The grocery store paid big bucks for the commercial access to us and we gladly took their money to feed the financial beast that is the athletic department.

I could also do the old “win one for the Gipper” speech by Knute Rockne. We had our own George Gipp with Sam Foltz. We honored Sam’s memory last year. Today one thing I want you to keep in mind is that tomorrow is promised to no one. Sam was driving home to his beloved Nebraska when he was killed in a car wreck. So today I urge you to play with all of your heart and leave nothing on the field. Any one of us could die tomorrow. Give it your best effort. In the words of A.E. Housman, “And early though the laurel grows/ It withers quicker than the rose.”

Given my many years coaching football I have learned motivation comes from within. So, to borrow a phrase, “Greed, for lack of a better word, is good.”

Play for yourselves. Play for your teammates. Play for your families. Be greedy out there.

I came to  Nebraska out of my own self-interest. I was paid a fortune. I moved to Lincoln with the best intentions but it didn’t work out. But I won’t be wondering where my next meal comes from on Saturday. As you go through life, think about what’s personally best for you and your family.

Today your self-interest lies with beating Iowa. Let’s do it as a team.

  5. The most likely scenario is that Uncle Moose fires Riley on the Monday after the game.

SI reports that UNL has a deal with Scott Frost. Is Frost then announced as the new head coach? Or does he finish the season at UCF?

Or does UNL go without a coaching staff until UCF finishes the season?

    What about recruiting after Friday?
