  1. Typically, when a person retires, the custom is to have a flag flown over the nations capital in honor of their service. What that basically entails however, is they run the flag up the pole, fly it for a minutes then bring the flag back down. You have to remember too, they get hundreds (probably thousands) of requests for flags to be flown over the capital. With a state capital, it may not be as bad. But to answer your question, yes, they fly a flag over the capital (state or nation) and you receive the actual flag. If she doesn't leave for a few months you can probably get the request in now and either request it be flown on the day she enters basic or if you have an idea when she graduates, you can request it be flown that day. Most senators/congressmen can have the flag flown.

AFSC=Air Force Specialty Code. It's her job basically. Mine is 1P0X1.

I don't think she has that yet, but maybe? I know last week the AF had presented her five or six different job. One was working on a surveillence plane and I think she liked that one best because she wants to live overseas for as long as she can. I know another was a survivialist instructor. I cannot see her eating live animals.

  2. Congratulations to your niece! I think she made a great decision joining the military. I'm nearing my 20 year mark in Air Force myself.

As for a gift during Basic....forget about it. Uncle Sam will make sure she has all the free "gifts" she needs. All her personal belonging will get locked up when she arrives and she won't get them back until she graduates. Doesn't matter what it is...it's bye-bye. Her instructors will tell her what she needs and when she can buy it.

Now if you want to get her a graduation gift, a nice idea would be to present her with a flag flown over her/your respective home states capital commemorating her graduation. And if she doesn't mind it being late, you can request it be flown the day of her graduation. But you have to act now if you want to do that. Can take several weeks to make it happen. But most graduates are just happy to have relatives show up on graduation. Maybe a nice dinner after since there's only so much "choke and puke" you can eat.

If you and/or your niece have any questions about the AF in general, feel free to pm. I can even pass along my email to make it easier to communicate.

BTW-do you know what her AFSC is going to be?

Wow- thanks. So the flag is an actual flag? and that is something that can be requested? She doesn't leave until sometime in Oct or Nov for basic so maybe that is something I could do.

Help me out- what is AFSC

  3. What's kind of funny about that chain gang incident was that it involved someone from Nebraska. The guy in charge or who made the mistake in that CU/MU game was a principal at a high school in Nebraska.

He was my Principal. Poor guy really didn't live that one down.

  4. My ongoing research discloses the following:

    Reeves at a Husker game.

He has a hat in his right hand - probably a USC hat?

/I can't wait for the season to start. :(

A USC hat would have been crimson/maroon and gold. that hat looks to be red and white.

Plus the USC game was at night and this pictures looks right before an afternoon kickoff

  5. Of the players that dribbled down their leg the possibility of earning millions in the pros, Terrell Farley gets my vote. Sure, LP had alot of natural ability too. But, man, I still put in old tapes just to watch Farley play. He had such a natural sense for knowing where the ball was and just freakish speed to get there.

Ah, well, another couple of coulda, woulda, shoulda athletes that had the world by the tail. What a shame

Didn't Farley play in the NFL way longer than LP? Farley was a great college player as kind of a hybrid LB CB. They don't use many LB's of his size in the NFL. LP or Johnny Rogers dribbled way more down their leg than Farley did. I realize he had scrapes with the law and such, but he did go on to have a NFL career.

I agree about Farley. What a waste. I don't think he ever played past his suspension from NU. He just kinda sank into bolivia(as Mike Tyson would say). I think he is one of my favorite players ever with as much raw talent as anyone whoever stepped on the field.

  6. All I know is that T.O. told all the coaches that one of the main reasons he was able to win championships was the retention of his assistant coaches. I love the coaches we have now, and my hope is that Watson would only leave for an offer from a big-time college.

Watson will probably leave at some point, but it will only be for a HC gig at a university the caliber of Nebraska. I mean last season he turned down an offer for a lateral move to Alabama.

Refresh my memory, was it a O coordinator job or a QB coach offer?

offensive coordinator, but he'd be answering to nick satan. wats got a pay bump as an incentive to stay, but to be honest i wouldn't want to work in a nuthouse like alabama.

Looking at Satan's record he will probably be gone in three years. The guy suffers from adult ADD. Which would leave an HC job open. I guess Watson is really true to the Huskers but will probably have to leave with a solid D-1 offer.

  7. Recruiting wise, again Ekeler is a STUD!! He can sell anyone!! A :star:star:star:star:star recruiter! Ek went up against a very good one at ASU, Matt Lubick. Son of Sonny at CSU.

Mods, can this thread be moved to the football section now?

  8. Forget about championships, winning percentages and bowl games. These, to me, are the sport's five most legendary coaches from a purely subjective standpoint:

    1. Bryant: For a quarter-century (1958-82), his teams dominated the sport and his persona dominated the profession. We may never see that again.

    2. Knute Rockne: Though he coached just 13 years, he singlehandedly created the Notre Dame dynasty, delivered the most famous locker-room speech in history and had a movie made about him. An estimated 300,000 people witnessed his funeral procession. He was kind of a big deal.

    3. Paterno: It's impossible to truly comprehend that Penn State has had the same head football coach since 1966 -- and that he led the Nittany Lions to the Rose Bowl last year at 81. For much of his career, he also was the sport's most prominent voice on myriad moral and ethical issues.

    4. Woody Hayes: He was the Bryant of the Midwest, a coach whose program's consistent dominance ceased only when Bo Schemebechler, a worthy rival, emerged during Hayes' latter years. Obviously, his legacy was to a degree forever tainted by that ghastly, final image.

    5. Bud Wilkinson: His Sooners of the late '40s and '50s were arguably the sport's greatest dynasty, capturing 13 straight conference titles and three national titles and achieving an NCAA-record 47-game winning streak. Only his early retirement at age 47 precluded further greatness.

    A few notable exclusions:

    • Tom Osborne: On paper, one could argue he was every bit as accomplished (.836 winning percentage, three national titles, 24 top 15 finishes) as the five names above, but unfortunately, his more bland personality made it harder to leave a lasting impression on most non-Nebraskans.

    • Bowden: He probably would have been on here had he retired in, say, 2002. His run of 14 straight top 4 finishes from 1987-2000 was Wilkinson-esque, but FSU's near-decade of mediocrity since has clearly dampened his legacy.

    • Pop Warner and Amos Alonzo Stagg: As the sport's unofficial founding fathers, they're unquestionably legends, but having coached in an era pre-radio/television, only hardcore historians possess any lasting image of these gentlemen.

    • Eddie Robinson, John Gagliardi and Tubby Raymond: It's hard enough comparing coaches from different eras, much less different levels. These guys deserve a list of their own.

That's my two cents. I'm sure many of you have your own, differing opinions -- and I'm sure I'm about to receive a whole bushel full of them.

I dropped him a note saying if he gigs Osborne for being "bland" then he has to do the same for Paterno. If Osborne is Vanilla, Paterno is French Vanilla.

I disagree, Paterno is pretty candid and has been an outspoken personality for several issues in college football throughout the years. Osborne, albeit great, has a bland personality. My main objection on the list is Woody Hayes. Osborne and Bowden had better track records, and neither one of them punched an opposing player.

    :yeah

  9. Good article although it is not enough for me to have the Huskers as a B12 North powerhouse. I just think that thinking is setting our standards too low.

I think winning the north is a legitimate and realistic goal for this year. I will personally set the bar higher in the following seasons.

I agree, but how I read this article is that the author does not believe we will ever match our glorious past(as he writes) which I assume to mean the number one team in the nation year end and year out. Rather we will become the beast of North. That is not good enough for me. I don't think many teams will have that one or two perennial tops spots that we use to enjoy. I want to think in terms of being the beast of the b12, not just the beast of the North.

  10. Do cell phones work on cruise ships? Do cruise ships have phones you can pay for, and probably dearly for, while out at sea? My family is going on a five day cruise to Mexico in a few weeks and I'm tying up loose ends before we leave. I would like to check my VM once of twice per day and be reached in case of a family emergency. I have alltel service if that matters.

I think you are out of luck. Where do you think they will put the cell phone towers?

I don't even get service between Lincoln and Nebr City.

    Satellite phones do work

Oops, thinking of Carribbean - Mexico west coast. If you are in sight of the coast you might - but don't know about Mexican cell phone service.

The cruise line just got back to me and they do have full cell service while sailing. $2.49 a minute which I think is reasonable.

  11. Man, you are going on vacation! You are trying to get away and have fun. Turn off the phone and go to the bar or the buffet. There is nothing you can do to help out things at home and the only thing VM will do is F up your vacation. The only worry you should have on a cruise is about falling overboard.

    Just ENJOY!

Man, I wish I could just not be in touch. I have an elderly parent that I do need to make myself accessible to in case of emergency.
