And it's been discussed on here too with the opposite: Our defense this year isn't going up against particularly strong/good linemen in practice that are good at executing the power run.

Very rarely do the "1's" on offense go up against the "1's" on defense during practice.  So, for all of us hoping that the younger guys down the pike are the saviors we want/hope/need them to be, then this is not saying much.

Very few here are actually watching Wisconsin and you hit the nail on the head to call it out.

Also, the original quote from TGHusker:

is quite the stretch. People on this site say this because of the Barry Alvarez connection and parrot a small selection of other similar, canned mantras, but aside from recruiting & developing good offensive linemen, there isn't much of a connection. Wisconsin runs a mainly Pro Style offense, and as you mention, has added some small twists in there with Coan.

Even Iowa has added a touch of this last year and this year as well with Stanley. But, few actually seem to watch that many games outside of Nebraska's.

When I have watched Wisconsin play, how they remind me of Nebraska of old.....the size and play of the lines.  This is how they are excelling

Nebraska had an identity that worked in the 20th Century. The Huskers need to redefine and refresh themselves in a way that works in the 21st.

Vince Lombardi - not a bad coach in his day - once said, “Football is blocking and tackling. Everything else is mythology.”

As many have stated on this board, if you can’t block and tackle you haven’t got a prayer. Not today and not tomorrow.

He also said, “Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

That’s something the Huskers can sell in the 21st Century. Teaching those things to young men is, in fact, more important than the outcome of any football game or season.

One more from Vince, “The measure of who we are is what we do with what we have.”

If the Huskers are doing everything they can with everything they have, they are winners in the bigger picture. Pretty numbers on the scoreboard is fun, but being as good as you can be is the best anybody can do. If they are not doing everything they can, then everyone else knows who is responsible for that.

No, you can’t sell losing to recruits. But you can sell the fact that you’ll make better young men out of them and you will put them in their best situation to succeed individually and as a team. No coach or program can ever do better than that. And IF you do that, the wins will come. And then, the glory.

Not going to bust your chops, but this sounds an awful lot like the “participation trophy” society we live in.  Win or lose, the process has done something great, maybe not on the field though.  This is not why Scott was hired.

  4. Frank and Bo both had records as coaches which most would be quite happy with right now.   Frank had the off the field issues, but was retooling his staff to get things going again, never got that chance.  Bo’s issues are well documented, but his performance exceeded both the guys who came after him.

I am fine with the tough questions and thoughts being brought to the forefront.  There are many, even those who are quite active on this board, who don’t like this and the scarlet colored glasses are always on.  It is fair.

winning cures all, end of story.  When that happens, most of this goes away on its own but until then it is very fair.  No one said earning the paycheck would be easy.

  5. Really hard to say as defining “back” is going to be all over the place, especially on this board.  We fired a 9 win coach, who got destroyed in big games, but was pretty consistent with the performance we saw.  His other issues aside, were we back with Bo?

Lots to do and I honestly feel it could be another decade, if ever.  College football has blown right by us and we are always trying to catch up.  No kid we are recruiting knows us other than what we have been, which is pretty plain and mediocre.  How do you sell that to anyone?  If we don’t improve in the next 3-4 years, we become an even bigger afterthought and the chore may be insurmountable.  Early poll results are not too far from this idea either.

in Scott we trust or is he the last straw?  IDK

I'm a little concerned with Allen's comments about the time away from each other during the bye week being good. I get it, it's a grind and a break is nice, but you don't often hear guys on a team talking like that. Am I reading too much into that?

I think there is a chemistry issue yet.  You can't cut all the cancer out of the last regime and there are younger guys who are probably pissed right now, but are holding back on saying too much.  Just guessing, but how many times do you see our guys really coming together during a game?

  7. "Back in the Day" the Offense Coaches (Milt and Young if I recall)  would "grade out" everyone on the line and these were pretty much made public.  I also recall it was hard to grade out "perfect" but guys had something to work towards and the pride of being "perfect".  Two questions:

    1)  Do we grade out the line (or any position group) like we used to?

    2)  Do guys even realize how bad/under-performing they have been playing via feedback such as grading out?

  8. These numbers are too hard to ignore.  Looks like the Big has already figured out the mastery of Scotty Frosty......damn sad.

Do the last 3 games constitute the worst offensive 3 game stretch in the history of Nebraska Football ?

The last 34 Times (Drives) we've had the ball (193 Plays):
    1 non-garbage time touchdown
85% of Drives (29 of 34) ending in punt or turnover
16 (out of 34) "Three and Outs"
110 of 193 plays (57%) resulting in 3 yards or less
5 Air Yard completions (in 193 plays) of over 10 yards
Average Drive over the 3 games: 5.5 plays / 23 yards / punt

    Plays / Yards / Result
    06 / 31 : Interception

I used to let losses affect my day/night. Almost miss those days.

Told my wife almost the exact same thing just a few minutes ago.  We used to lose and the state would be p!$$ed off.  Now, we make excuses and hope to go to a bowl.  I don’t even mind missing games anymore.  Sad times
