Have I missed the part where we now have a Top 15 recruiting class?

Oh, has he been hired as the permanent head coach? I must've missed that, too.

Must be exhausting to sit around all day waiting for me to post so that so you can scrutinize my every word and point out any flaws.

Hey -- remember last year around this time when I said I still wasn't sold on Chin and you posted a bunch of statistical data that "proved" I was in denial and had no clue what I was talking about? Good times.

I only stated him bc that question wasn't even thought about when they hired him.

Trust me, I was here during the whole thing. I said from the moment I heard the hire that he wouldn't succeed here, yet I was told my many of the usual suspects that I was just a Negative Nancy/Debbie Downer and that by all accounts he was an excellent coach who achieved great things with lesser talent (ala Leipold)... and how all his former players loved him

Yep.  We competed with the top teams in the country with a coach that got fired.  So a better coach could be expected to have better results, right?

You might expect that.  It doesn't mean that it's realistic.

You don't recruit your way to a contending program.  You coach your way there.

Recruiting success follows on-field success.  Not the other way around.

    See above.

Also, people have seen his success there for about one month now.  That's not exactly a lot of time to put together a lot of recruits.

Meh. Sounds like a bunch of excuses to me. If a guy can recruit, he can recruit. Leipold just isn't a hot enough commodity yet.

So if he's succeed with almost no talent, that's pretty good coaching.

I'm not doubting his coaching ability; I'm doubting his recruiting ability. Despite his success at KU this year, they're still #78 in recruiting. Not exactly knocking it off the park on the recruiting trail, eh? But I guess with our "superior resources" he'd be able to do it here?

You can't possibly know that.  There is nothing to indicate that other than that's what you want to believe.

You're right; I can't. But considering 3 of their final 5 games are against ranked opponents, with the other two against solid opponents, I'd say the odds are in my favor.

Does your point include Texas A&M being 3-3 with 56 4-5 star players and Illinois being 6-1 with 8 4-5 star players or do you only count that when it's convenient for you?

It's a combination of coaching and talent. There will always be exceptions but for the most part, talent matters. I'm certainly not blaming him for not being able to recruit top talent to Kansas. But what it tells me is that he wouldn't be able to recruit top talent here, either. Looking forward to what folks are saying when KU finishes 7-5 or similar.

  8. So Kansas is now 5-2... Leipold just gave up 52 points and 700+ yards of offense to OU... still want him?

Are we starting to warm up to Bret Bielema or still need more proof?

I'd be happy w/ him. Don't think Trev will even reach out, though.

I don't think it really matters because whatever that number is, he's getting it either way.

The difference is that he can either A) get it from from the Panthers for doing absolutely nothing; or B) get it from us for coaching and all that entails. What would you do?

I think your math is a little off because part of that $40M number that's being thrown around is for this year which makes it $40M over 5 years. So it's somewhere closer to $8M per year for 2023-2026

    https://athlonsports.com/nfl/heres-how-much-money-panthers-still-have-to-pay-matt-rhule

We'd likely have too offer $10-mil/yr. to get him to consider... likely even more because he's already making that much, doing nothing.

My understanding is he gets around $8.85 million per year from the Panthers (7 year, $62M contract). He already got that for year 1 and 2 when he was coaching and he'll get it from them for the rest of this season. So, the Panthers are out around $26.55M of the $62M no matter what. But he's still owed the rest of the contract no matter what, so roughly $35.45M. After this year, whatever his new deal is with his new team will go against the balance. So essentially, he's getting paid $8.85 per year for the next 4 years no matter what. The only question is where it comes from. If we hired him and pay him $7M per year, the Panthers pay him the other $1.85M for the next 4 years. If we hired him and pay him $9M, the Panthers are off the hook. The Panthers really want him to return to coaching a demand a really high price tag.

From my understanding they will be paying him $40-mil over the next 48 months.

I’d imagine we’d be compensating Rhule less than he’s being compensated after dismissal. The Panthers would continue to pay him a yet undetermined amount.

He'll be making 40-mil over 48 months, which amounts to $10-mil/year, $833K/mo. Now remember, that's to sit at home doing nothing. So, whoever hires him is gonna have to make it worthwhile.

That 48-second clip of Campbell speaking was very telling. And not in a good way.

I was not that excited about him before and certainly not now. I say this realizing that others out there know him much better than I do.

I have the feeling that Campbell was likely one of the first guys that TA reached out to, back to last season. Hopefully he's backed off.

Thought you were implying that the guys in front of you were out-of-state, hence the outsider's view of Nebraska's situation.

Never been to Columbus, but my oldest friend is from there and it's her birthday today. So I officially retract any Columbus snark.

I have no idea where they were from, but we were in the Columbus airport.
