The Big west is wide open and begging for someone to take control. Every game will be a struggle. Can we show Somme pride and compete? Today’s game will definitely set that tone. Let us hope mickey’s bye week preparations are successful. A win can really ignite this team.

I agree.  And it’s one of the reasons Nebraska is a good job.  Maybe USC and UCLA changes that somewhat, but they’ll hopefully get the same “new kid on the block” treatment we endured.

he coaches a perennial top 25 team with top 25 recruiting classes without even having to leave the state of texas. and gets about 6 million a year with no state income taxes. good luck getting him to come to a program that fires every coach after 4 years and has no recruiting base.

If you made $6 mil a year, would you worry about state income taxes?

What’s worse in that scenario…A) we are so dumb, we passed on the obvious top choice, or B) we are so s#!tty, he passed on us?

    A.  Definitely.   We’ve been dumb for >20 years.  It’s time for that to stop.

They'll miss him when he's gone.

He’ll go somewhere and tear it up again.  And we’ll all be here arguing about why we didn’t consider him.  I can see it now.  If it plays out that e, Hopefully it leaks that Trev did approach him, but he wasn’t interested.

That portion of the fan base can f#&% off.  This is football, not church choir.  Urban is the best available coach out there period.

I get where you are coming from but I also get where BRB is coming from.  I think a better way to ask the question is would your favorite to be the next coach been your favorite 13 months ago?  So many people look at what is happening right now instead of looking at the body of work from a coach.  Aranda might be awesome.  I wouldn't be mad if we hired him but I don't feel any level of comfort because he has such little experience as a head coach.

I don't have one coach I would be crazy about but I would like us to hire someone who has shown he can recruit, then develop those recruits, and ultimately win at a high level with the players he recruited.  Hiring anyone without those 3 things becomes a gamble we shouldn't take imo.

What are your thoughts on Bronco Mendenhal?

Oh, there might be a head coach that might come here. I am talking a big name head coach like most of us are wanting.

We don't suck? Have you watched the last 5 years? We DO suck and have a losing culture mindset right now. Hopefully the guys that are in place now can fix that. A team does not lose the way the Huskers have lost the last 5 years and not suck/have a loser mindset.

I’m not talking wins and losses.  The coaching and administration/ ADs for 20 years have sucked, but they have no bearing on the next hire.   Nebraska, as a job doesn’t suck.

route, but we may need to accept the fact that a big name (already head coach) may not be coming to coach the Huskers. I hope I am wrong, but I just don't see it happening.

There’s absolutely no, zero, zilch reason an existing HC wouldn’t be coming.  We don’t suck as much as so many on this board believe we do.

Does anyone really think MJ is going to be ok with taking an assistant coaching role here after being turned down for the HC?

I strongly doubt anyone from the current staff is still around come spring.

Who knows what MJ’s aspirations are going to be come December.   To me he seems more likely to enjoy being out recruiting than dealing with Head Coaching duties.  Plus  if he only wins 1-2 more games, who’s going to hire him as a HC?  If he does well and Trev hires someone else, I can see him bolting for a HC gig if one was offered.  I don’t see him voluntarily leaving NU for another assistant job.

I listened to a former Ohio State WR coach under Urban Meyer.  He said there is no possible way Urban comes to Nebraska because his wife would never allow it.  He said the same thing about Luke Fickle. Lastly, he said he is a NU fan but if Bill O'Brien is hired he will officially get off the NU fan train.

His wife doesn't want him to coach again, or she has something against NU?

You do realize he took an 11 win team in 2019 and took them directly to a 2 win team, right?  Last year was an impressive turn around but people should pump the brakes and realize this was a program winning at a very high level before he took over and he is now winning primarily with Matt Rhule recruits.

18 seniors graduated from that 2019 Rhule team, plus a 4th round pick junior left early.  2020 was Aranda's first season there, plus it was the infamous COVID year.  I'm more concerned with his impressive '21 and also waiting to see how this season plays out.  Plus he's got the B1G connection as well as MJ/LSU connection.  I just don't see a better realistic candidate at this point.

Is there anyone in the Nebraska "established media" that is worse than Sipple?

Sipple's On3 column this morning: "Nebraska fans should keep a close eye on Aranda"

Sipple on the radio this morning: "no chance" of getting Aranda

I find Sipple unique and entertaining.  But, yes it’s hard sometimes to take him seriously.

Week 2 of search my top 5 still pretty much hasn’t changed.

    1. Mark Stoops

    2. Kalen DeBoer

    3. Dave Aranda

    4. Lance Leipold

    5. Matt Campbell

Get one of the top 3 and we will get back to winning.

I like it. I would include Dave Clawson too.   I think anyone you mentioned would get us back to winning.

I'm just saying, we must be pretty full of ourselves to suggest some coaches would piss on what they are building, for a chance to coach the Big Red.... the same place where, if it doesn't work out and you get fired, history shows you will not succeed after that.  Unless G5, FCS and USFL are really your dreams.

We’re not full of ourselves.  We need a coach.  You don’t know what all these coaches’ career goals are until you ask.  And Nebraska has a lot to offer.    You seem to be going with the  “glass half empty” approach here.

Its not set in stone that Urban Meyer isn't coming just yet. I will hold out hope he is still on our radar.

I know.  I’m just not getting my hopes up because of being used to us not getting nice things.  But, by a long way, he would bring the most excitement to me compared to anyone else.  People complain about this and that about him,  but the guy knows how to win with talent.  And if he came here, he would bring in a good staff and talented players.

  16. Since Urban likely isn’t coming, I’m switching to Team Aranda for now (I’m sure someone will tell me why he’s not coming either).  But I reserve the right to shift on a daily basis.  I think we can hopefully all agree that whoever Trev gets will be a significant upgrade over fHCSF.

It’s not a stretch to say that if Trev finds the right guy, Trev could end up being considered the greatest Husker AD of our lifetimes.

    Fwiw

The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman reported Kansas head coach Lance Leipold, Iowa State head coach Matt Campbell and Alabama offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien are “high” on the Cornhuskers’ list of potential targets to replace Scott Frost, who was fired Sept. 11 after a 1-2 start to the season.

Reporters looking for clicks.  And head coaches about to get raises.

Watch a coaching clinic, look at the stats, watch his guys on sundays.

It's not even a sure thing that he wants to be in the profession. If he wanted it and had the juice he'll take the ASU job, if not, we'll know.

It's further from a sure thing that he can coach his way through adversity since he couldn't even make it a season in the only other losing culture that's tested him. Anyone on the market that has is more a sure thing, imo.

I’d guess that, at most, maybe 1/3 of all the coaches on the “ big board of NU coach candidates “ actually turn out to be really successful P5 coaches.  Which ones is anybody's best guess.  Leonhard does look promising, but I don’t want to take a chance on a coordinator.  I’ll support whoever Trev gets, though.  All the evidence I’ve seen/read points towards Matt Campbell the most.
