I think the whole Covid-19 situation hurts Nebraska as much as any program in the nation. We only have a handful of in-state kids worthy of a scholarship. We rely heavily on getting out of state kids to campus in the spring. I see more kids staying closer to home this cycle. I don't see us getting a great class because of this.

You're probably right, except for Nebraska kids. We really need games this fall, for recruiting and for all of our sanity.

Mind telling me what has happened since signing day. Everyone seemed pretty happy with our recruiting class and the future was full of possibilities. So 3 months later with a slow start to the next class has got you thinking this way? Woof!

I think it's just mostly that the majority of our top targets are either trending elsewhere or they've gone radio silent.

Nebraska is a harder sell without being on campus, seeing the spring game, meeting with the coaches, etc. We just need to hope recruiting opens up soon (and games are played this fall, and we win a lot).

    Smothers is not ready.

Adrian and Luke are going to battle it out for the starting job.

Adrian, I am figuring, will win the job.

Scott is going want to put in packages that feature Luke instead of wasting talent on the bench. This crew needs all hands on deck.

No. 1 and No. 2 QBs are on the field at the same time.

    What if there are injuries?

Before now, you would roll out Adrian and feature Luke.

Then Adrian gets hurt, you put in Luke and have Vederal as the back up.

Or you can continue to feature Luke while Vederal takes the snaps.

Luke gets hurt. Adrian continues at No. 1 and you have Vederal in the wings just in case.

    No Vederal. Can't feature Luke.

If you did, and Luke got hurt, who would back up 2AM. An unprepared Smothers.? Please dude.

Smothers isn't getting any time to prepare due to COVID-19 and he has dealt with HS injuries.

Add this.... Bunch leaves, well, he was recruited by the last guy, so, umm, OK I guess.

But how is it that Frost doesn't have a better relationship with Vederal? Everyone is thinking that Frost and Vederal had worked it out and Vederal came knowing he would not be the starter and blah, blah, blah. Something doesn't smell right here. Either Frost lied to Vederal to get him to come here or Scott and Vederal had their relationship damaged post transfer.

None of that seems like good news.

Could there be some truth to a damaged relationship? Sure.

On the other hand, could it just be a kid got his degree and wants his chance to lead a team? Every bit as likely.

I'm guessing Frost wanted him to stay but laid things out honestly and supported him in his decision.

Also, Masker is still here for emergency purposes.

What do the “insiders” say about Vedral leaving the program.

Very disappointing.  Somethng is just not quite right in Huskerville with all the QBs leaving.  I know kids want to start but Noah got playing ops at times.  If Frost has “pets” or faves, he really needs some friendly advice in avoiding even the appearance of such.   This is a morale killer.  He can lose entire team if this is reality.  Kids need to feel confident they are being given a fair chance and not just being “practice dummies”

I think it's more the fact that Noah saw how good Luke is and probably got a glimpse of Logan's abilities as well. I wish him nothing but the best, but we still have some studs there.

The word "average" is a key word in my post.  Yes, that would mean there would be 25 on the roster.  But, there is always attrition with injuries, transfers, off the field problems...etc.  It's unrealistic to think that every lineman is going to be here for 5 years.

So, if you have 5 per year over 5 years, that's 25.  If you want to really have 17, that means 8 of the 25 don't make it 5 years.  Heck, sometimes they don't even make it to campus.  I think that's a reasonable expectation.

Also, if we have 5 this class, that means the last three classes would be 6,3,5.  Or....an average of 4.66.  I don't think it's unreasonable to think we would take 5 in this class.

I get what you're saying, but linemen don't seem to transfer as much as skill guys. Plus, it's easier to find a walk-on lineman that's deserving of a scholarship to replace a transfer for a year or two.

I think 4 or 4.5 is a good yearly average of scholarship signees without sacrificing much at other positions.

I think there is a 3rd piece that doesn’t get evaluated enough. Some speed is good, arm talent is good, but I think the most important piece is the mental side for a QB. Guys like kellen Moore and colt mccoy dominated college football with decent running, decent arm but great at seeing the field. Where others not good at seeing the field but are super fast or have rocket arm are just ok.

You would think right now that people would do what is right but money is king.  Right now in Grand Island there is a large infection rate because of the meat packing plant. 3500 mostly migrant workers forced to work in close proximity.  The disease is spreading quickly there, but you wouldn't know because there has been very little testing. Hundreds have called out sick with no pay.  However the Grand Island ICU is currently FULL.  And they are planning on shipping patients out to Kearney Lincoln, and Omaha.

But the governor will not allow the Health department to close the meat plant temporarily or even reduce staff to increase distance between workers because the beef feeders will lose money

    Beef packers* will lose money.

The beef feeders are already losing plenty of money while the packers are making plenty.

No kidding. Let's not forget that he did just lose his position coach a few months ago, and hasn't been able to spend much quality time with the new coach...

Right, but I think he was closer to Held than Walters, so hopefully that helps us out. I'm excited to watch his career continue to unfold here.

The head banging against the wall frustration in this is that Frost has shown he wants to use a good tightend.  It's just not happened since he got here.  I have to believe it's because he doesn't have the right guy.

    TE production:

    Oregon

    2013 Rec - 32 Yards - 501 TDs - 5

    2014 Rec - 42 Yards - 592 TDs - 7

    2015 Rec - 21 Yards - 268 TDs - 2

    UCF

    2016 Rec 36 Yards - 510 TDs - 2

    2017 Rec 55 Yards - 858 TDs - 5

    Nebraska

    2018 Rec 28 Yards - 374 TDs - 3

    2019 Rec 33 Yards - 326 TDs - 1

So, Tightends can be very effective in this offense and used.  But, there's clearly a drop off when he came to Nebraska that needs corrected.

He knows that. That's why he wants Fidone so bad.

Reading really fast, it looked like 510 TD's, 858 TD's, etc.

    Is the quarantine over yet:facepalm:

The issues started before the current goings-on.

I understand that, but I think the current situation is going to make it harder to get back on track than some realize. I hope he gets it figured out.

So ... apparently his first semester this year went really well.  "Better than expected."

Unfortunately, he let things slip a bit this semester.  He's working on making up some work over the break now.  And still planning to take the ACT again this summer - though there is talk that the NCAA make relax some rules for this class given the extenuating circumstances.

Are they actually on break or switched to online learning? If they switched to online learning like most schools, that's a shock for a lot of students. They now have almost all of the responsibility and much less support and accountability. Plus, it's not less work for most students or teachers.

At least in his situation, I'm sure he's got plenty of people contacting him to hold him accountable and help as needed.

Have to think the fact that he can't go back to school and they can't really hand out grades for the 4th quarter means everybody gets an A!

This shutdown is going to really help students that were on that line.

The way our school is doing it, and how many in the state are, will be basing this semester's grade on just the 3rd quarter. That's great for students who did well for the 3rd quarter, not great for those who didn't. However, we decided for students who work really hard during this online learning, we can bump their grades up. We won't be reducing grades for students who slack off this quarter.

This basically follows guidance from the state that this is more an enrichment time rather than typical expectations. We are still teaching our students as close to normal as possible, but it is technically not required that they do the work. The longer they go without finding out it's optional, the better.

I mean the kickoffs and 1/2/3 point conversions are cool, but this is just another AAF. G5 level fooball that I'm already bored of

I actually found it fairly entertaining. For the most part it was pretty good football and the production and announcers did a good job. I'm not sure how I feel about shoving a microphone in every player's face right after they make or miss a play.

Superbowl 54 gets closer and closer.  Who you got?

I have to say I need to get back to rooting for one of these teams again. I was a 49ers fan when Joe Montana was QB, when the game was on in the waiting area of a hospital when I drove my Mom and Brother there because my brother had a dislocated finger.  49ers had an amazing come from behind victory, and I was hooked.  It helped, with Tom Rathman and Roger Craig also being there.

Then, when Joe went to play for the Kansas City Chiefs, they became my team as I rooted him on to victory, and once again another great Nebraska player was there too.  Neil Smith.

over the years, I've kind of been watching and rooting for a few teams, but recently, in the last few years, and especially this season, Patrick Mahomes has been fun to watch.

I am picking the Kansas City Chiefs to win by 3.  Should be an excellent game.

Thread title is a little off.

Super Bowl XLIV was ten years ago (super bowl 44) featuring the Saints vs Colts.

This year is Super Bowl LIV (54)
