    Why the necessity to stop ad blocker.  How did this site run for 8 years without forcing ad blocker to be disabled?  From a user, and from an information security professional, turning off ad-blocker is akin to waving my fanny in the air and hollering "take me big boy, I'm yours!"

    It's 16 years, not 8. This site was created on May 13, 2003. Advertising as a revenue model is used by the vast majority of online sites. The previous owners of this site ran it at a loss for 16 years. With the current model in place it will take a minimum of two years to recoup what I paid them for the site. By blocking that revenue model you are essentially telling the people that provided this site to you at a financial loss that you don't appreciate what they did for the past 16 years.

    They came to me asking me to either buy the site or work with them to set up an advertising model with a strong preference to sell so they could spend more time with family. We agreed upon their desire to sell rather than continue and came to terms that we both agreed would remain confidential. Either way this site was going to have an advertising revenue model.

    As an internet security professional do you visit just about every news site with you ad blocker on. Does the OWH and LJS allow you to view their content with your ad blocker on? Do you have an Alexa or Google Home? Do you use Facebook?  Do you use GPS on your phone? Do you use a web browser to surf the internet? If you surf the internet with or without ad blockers Google, Apple, Facebook and others have a profile on each and every one of us. They use that to target ads that they believe best fit those profiles. It's a fact of life. Bottom line is this site would cease to exist without a revenue model to support it.

    The problem with having advertisers is that they then run the show. Can't say anything bad about the advertisers or they will pull the funding. Members will start being banned if they piss off an advertiser, etc.

    Watch, it will happen sooner or later.

    That never happens. It works the other way like getting the Colorado ad removed.

    This deserves a thumbs down.

    The analogy that I use is do you take your bacon and eggs into the restaurant and ask them to cook it for free? Tolerating ads is all this restaurant is asking for in exchange for being the restaurant where you can have your bacon and eggs for free since the ads are paying for your meal.

    I'm confused

    If you don't use an ad blocker you can read and post for free.

    If you use an ad blocker you won't be able to view the site.

    If you want to view the sites without ads I am considering an OPTIONAL subscription model for those that want to post and view without ads.

    The best option is to not use an ad blocker and continue to view and post for free.

    He stated he would have a payment for ad-free viewing.

    That is under consideration. The revenue from the site is mainly from ads. You can post and read for free if you allow ads. If you use an ad blocker you will soon be seeing a message to turn off your ad blocker.

    Bottom line is this site would not exist without revenue to keep it going. The choice is very simple. Don't use an ad blocker and continue to read and post for free. There is not and there will not be a subscription model to post or read on this site.

    I would love to stick around, however, if they are going to require members to pay money to post and read in the forum like I heard they were going to do, I won’t do it.  I sure hope it doesn’t come to that.

    There will be no requirement to pay to post and read. Not sure where you heard that but it is incorrect.

  7. I posted this as an announcement and want to start a thread as well so it won't be missed. I have been trying since August to find a programmer to do the upgrade for the BBS software and have found a reliable source to do the upgrade and also preserve the previous customizations that have been done.

    The upgrade will happen on Monday starting at 1:30 Central time and the board will down for up to four hours. I would have preferred to have it done late at night but I am at the mercy of the programmer's schedule.

    And there is the first shoe to drop about Huskerboard becoming a pay site...

    Not really. Some posters have requested an option to not view ads. That is in response to that request. Huskerboard will always be a free site to post and register and there will be ads. The subscription is optional and only if you don't want to view ads.

    David, if you're still listening....

    What is your monthly revenue goal? I'm not asking you what it costs you to run the site. What do you need to generate per month to consider running HB "worth it"?

    Because these ads are ridiculous and I'd rather see if we can drum up a fundraising event again and get you the money so you knock off the crap.

    There will be an option to opt out of the ads with an annual subscription. It won't be available until a couple of weeks from now.  Based on feedback I have decided to keep the Invision bbs software and keep the ads to a minimum.

  10. Going through the thread here is the summary I have come up with;

    Jack Hammer NU 27 SA 21 - off by 8 - total yards 501
    @huskered17 NU 42 SA 17 - off by 11 - total yards 424
    @Redux NU 46 SA 17 - off by 15 - total yards 487
    @huskerbacker10 NU 33 SA 7 - off by 16 - total yards 625
    @Dogs In A Pile NU 45 SA 27 - off by 16 - total yards 415

    Too bad Jack Hammer got banned as he would have won. That makes huskered17 the winner of a $25 gift certificate from Best of Big Red. Congratulations, I will send you the code by private message.

    Going forward the prize each week will be the $25 Best of Big Red gift certificate.
