I think the program is in an incredibly difficult spot.

Just from the Roster standpoint alone, there appear to be 30 or more players that are MAC level players.

Overhauling the roster and simultaneously trying to get to 6 wins is going to be difficult for the next coach. They aren't exactly being handed a team full of young talent. Nebraska's roster is both young and untalented.

The roster has a ways to go to be conference championship contenders, no question about it. But this roster is good enough for a quality coach to win a good amount of games.

Take this year for example. Write in Oklahoma and Michigan as losses. Maybe add Illinois to that as well, although I think they're beatable as well. With competent coaching (not including Mickey as incompetent, I'm referring to a good coach that has a full offseason and a good plan in all 3 phases), this team could win 8-9 games. That's as it's currently assembled.

People really need to stop with the doomsday stuff

I just want to go on record, before it is announced, and say that it will be Rhule.

    Or Fickel….or Meyer.

This program simply cannot let it slip to a tier B name after the last 20 years. They have the bucks and they will spend whatever it takes. Personally, I think the BS with the Panthers saying $10M or forget it was just some misinformation. Do you really think they wouldn’t love to unload $8M/year of that liability? This program has already lost a generation to bad football.  It will cost them much more in the long run to bring in some lackluster dud than it will to get a very top candidate and the AD and major boosters have to understand this. I sure don’t think it’s any time to gamble with pissing off the fanbase. This will be a homerun hire. JMO

I've been optimistic this entire process. Yesterday with some of the narrative my confidence wavered some. But I think I agree with you. This hire just can't be a so-so hire. Trev has to inspire confidence and optimism in the fan base again.

He can no longer attract talent there. NIL has affected everyone and it is going to kill off programs like ISU and the likes. It's happening to Northwestern if we are keeping it relevant to us.

I don't buy it. Sounds a lot like "look what he did at X school. Can you imagine what he could do with the resources here?!"

    Pass.

I agree he wouldn't, but I think he makes Nebraska bowl eligible in year one. His ceiling isn't insane by any means, but I think he raises our floor significantly and would do in one year what Scott couldn't do in two.

Campbell couldn't even get his team to a bowl in his 7th year or whatever he's in right now

No. He doesn't get any pass, and its because the way this went down. He knew this was likely coming by this time last year. He had from then until the start of the season to prepare. He then fired Frost after 3 games, so that he had three months a head start on the official search process. In doing so, he cost the university an extra $7.5 million. If he bungles this, it is all on him, and if it is bungled. I will believe the reports of him pinching pennies. What's that saying? Penny smart, pound foolish? A good Nebraska football program pays for itself 10 fold. With what Nebraska can pay, and the resources and facilities, there is no reason he should not be able to grab a tier one coach.

On the bold, EXACTLY! Can you imagine how much money you'll COST the program by not hiring the right coach? I don't usually view things in an extreme way like this, but this really is a CRUCIAL hire. I really hope all of this is a smoke shield to hide the fact that either Kiffin or Aranda have been hired for quite some time.

I don't think it would take an amazing coach to get NU to back to being "good".  NU has been a dumpster fire this year, but it's also pretty close to having 5 or 6 wins.  Yes, this program needs to be rebuilt, but a good coach can get NU back to 8-9 wins.  That doesn't have to be Urban Meyer or Chris Petersen.

Absolutely 1000000% correct. Which is why I can't resonate with the thought that Nebraska will never be good ever again, and bowl contention should be our goal each year. I think the fan base has been humbled over the past 8 years or so (deservedly so), but 7 wins should be what this team does in its down years, with 8&9 wins being the norm, and continually competing for our division (or pod or however that's going to work) deep into the season each year. With the resources, fan support, etc that this university has at its disposal, anything else is unacceptable. I said coming into this year that Frost needed to win 7 for us to even think about bringing him back, and 8 to be safe.

lol. A fun style of offense isnt what we need. Who runs a fun style of offense and is winning in the B1G other then Ohio State.

We need an offense that can move the ball with a balanced attack and score points. His scheme fits that.

    HOL with similar reports.

Rhule seems to be looking elsewhere.  I wasn't sure if I should believe that when I heard it last week but that seems to be the prevailing opinion now.

Stoops was contacted but now has an extension at Kentucky.

Leipold seems to be moving to the top of the list.  He hasn't signed a new deal with Kansas.

Doeren and Klieman are in the mix.

Fickell floated as a possibility.  DeBoer and Traylor listed as possibilities.

The tea leaves I'm reading suggest that Rhule wants more money than Trev wants to pay him. If true, that's kind of disappointing.

If Rhule is out, I think the home run hires would be Kiffin or Fickell, but I'm not sure either is attainable. Especially if my feeling about not wanting to pay Rhule is correct, then you're not going to get those 2 guys for any cheaper.

I know a lot of people have cooled on Leipold, but I still think he'd be a solid hire. Runs a fun style of offense and is a really good game manager. He'd just need to hire a really good DC (maybe keep Busch as DC) and fill his staff with great recruiters (Mickey).

If there's no announcement tomorrow, I don't think that it'll be Rhule. That's where I'm at too. Unless, no matter what coach it is Trev wants to wait until after the season has concluded.

If that were his stance, wouldn't he have said that on his radio show? That's what I've been pondering today.

I actually would be hoping that they ARE still ironing out the details if Rhule was my top pick. It would explain the delay.

A delay with Rhule if he's the guy probably isn't a great sign. Either he's holding out to see if other jobs open, or there are hold-ups on certain aspects of the contract, or of the Panthers buyout. My hunch is if there's no announcement tomorrow, it's not very likely to be Rhule (or Urban or Peterson)

With no announcement today, it seems likely that the new HC is currently coaching a team.  That would eliminate Rhule, Meyer and more from the conversation.  If Trev was willing to fire Frost midseason, I see no reason why he would want to wait to announce a new HC before the season is over unless that coach has to finish out their current season.

We also know that Stoops is out of contention given his contract extension this weekend.  If the tweet above from Leipold's wife is correct, he is out of contention too.  That still leaves us many good options.  Kiffin's team has seemed distracted the past couple weeks...perhaps it's Lane?

I'm putting the cutoff for Rhule tomorrow.

It's possible that Trev would wait till next weekend to announce Rhule, but I would think if he were insistent on waiting for the season to conclude that he'd have said that on his radio show last week. But it's possible it's Rhule and they're still ironing out the contract details (I hope not)

Edit: to be clear, I hope they're not still ironing out details. I'd be very happy with Rhule

Man, there is a bunch of way too depressed people on here today.  Did that one loss to Wisconsin yesterday make everyone that crazy?  I don't know how that game has suddenly changed people's mindset, but the Wisconsin game pretty much happened how so many games have happened the past 5 years.  I've been saying all year the program is broken.  But that doesn't mean there isn't a coach out there who can get NU back to winning.  It just takes one coach, and that doesn't necessarily need to be a "big name".

100%. We've seen around the country, if there aren't signs of significant progress by year 2, you don't have the right guy most likely

Id put Deion in Tier One bc I think he is well on his way to being a great coach. He would generate the new age fans with old school traditions. For me the only thing that you question is the experience but he is working with less resources then most schools and still winning. He has the drive and vision to succeed bc he knows how to do it.

I think Deion could be a phenomenal G5 coach, but for Nebraska right now we cannot take that kind of risk. And I think geographically he's not a great fit here. Georgia Tech should hire him - I think that would be perfect.

Who are your REALISTIC top 3 choices after yesterday's games?

    1- Rhule

    2- Deboer

    3- Klieman

I'm out on Leipold. He's just a slightly better Mike Riley

I'm not sure if I can't rank them, but I can put them in tiers

    Tier 1: legitimately excited

    Rhule

    Urban

    Peterson

    Deboer

    Aranda

    Kiffin

Tier 2: good coaches but not home runs

    Klieman

    Leipold

    Stoops

    Doeren

    Mickey

    Tier 3: ugh...

    Campbell

    Deion

    Monken

    Calhoun

    I'm sure I'm missing a few

Iowa State also turned it over on downs inside the TT five yard line twice in the second half.  Of an extremely low-scoring game.

He is not on the list of anyone who has any idea what's going on.

If Trev announces Campbell... I'll always support Nebraska but man that would be one of the least exciting hires.
