Nebraska sure could use another RB and WR with big play potential.

We have plenty of those.  Problem is our qb among others.  He stares down on ONE receiver for his entire route, doesnt read the defense, even on the read option he makes bad reads.  Seriously he looks like a different guy this year.....Taylor Martinez or Tommy Armstrong were SIGNIFICANTLY better than the way Adrian looks this year.  Sorry but thats the truth.  Im hopeful that he can become a great QB, and we know he has potential, but RIGHT NOW he is terrible. He hangs receivers out to dry also.  Spielman is gonna get hurt if this continues. Absolutely no way to sugarcoat it.

  2. When i later look back at my posts, 90% of them are useless.  I just need to write them out so my mind can process the game.  The games this year have confused me, and i really dont know what to make of them.

Looking at lastnights game, if NIU didnt make so many mistakes it could have been a close game which concerns me.  On the other side of that thought, we also made alot of mistakes and still won 44-8 which is a very impressive score.  In other words, i still know nothing.

  3. His passing stats are almost identical this year, but this is against possibly the 3 worst teams on our schedule.  Clearly he has not been good, but he made progress lastnight.  He looks to be overthinking.  As he gets more experience, hopefully he will start to just play and have fun.

  4. Ill preface this by saying im truly not an expert by any means.  So correct me please.

    The good:

*Mills! He saw the holes, still needs to be a bit more patient, but lots of progress made!

*Passing game! Martinez saw more open guys downfield.  Still missed a few, and not great, but good progress.

*Defense! Still doing their thing.  Our Defense is legit! (One worry, i will get too later)

*Backups. Honestly i think our offense looks equally as good with Vedral, and our backup receivers/blockers. (Just sayin)

    The bad:

*O-line still missing some blocks.  But it was a bit better than last week.

*Martinez still looks a lil bit slow (physically and mentally)

    The ugly:

*Our one strength so far- Our Defense- took a hit.  We had already lost one of our best safeties, and now Cam Taylor looks like he is out for a long time (hope im wrong).  If he is out, we have lost our 2 best safeties (Deontai Williams and now Cam Taylor).  I LOVE our defense, but Deontai and Cam were possibly our 2 best defenders, if not our 2 best Safeties in the least.  Didnt hurt us today, but against better teams this could be a BIG problem.

Probably our best 2 athletes on defense out? We lose alot of our speed defensively, how will we adjust? My biggest worry coming out of this game is this. Thoughts on this?

  5. Could get ugly. Sadly, this was a huge game that we should have won, and lost. No way to sugarcoat it, we needed this win and didnt get it.  No excuses.  We practiced good, we were up for the game, we needed this win, we had a home crowd, we were playing a below average team, we were healthy enough, we had already played our first game, we were NOT in our first year unlike Colorado.  More specifically on offense, we were going against a BAD Colorado defense, and we still couldnt produce.   Our offense is dissapointing.

  6. Hoping to write out my (our?) Emotions. After settling down, what is the reality of what we witnessed today?

After the first half, we had the gane put away.  Colorado was down and out, all we had to do was come out and put one more score on the board and it was essentially over.

After watching the beginning of the 3rd, i was worried.  Where is the killer instinct? Why do we look like we are half asleep?  We lost this game right here.

This is on our coaches.  I dont know what the halftime speech was, but we could have ended the game right here.  Put them away. Instead we came out flat.

What i observed, is that we were the better team.  That is the positive news, we have the personnel to be good.  We looked like a top 25 team tbh.  So why did we lose to a very average Colorado team, and a bad defense?  Coaching.  I love Frost, and think he is the best guy for us, but coaching lost us this game.

In summary, what we should be most dissapointed in is our lack of offense (specifically in the 3rd).  We played scared, what happened to the no fear of failure preached by our coaches? Where is the 2AM running game? Where is the tight end passing game? The playcalling?

These last 4 questions are where im upset.  And they ALL come down to coaching.  Give Frost and staff time, but make no mistake, our players didnt lose this game, it was our coaching, specifically our offensive play caller, specifically Frost.  He is a great coach, but he is human, and this game showed us all that fact.  Our defense DID NOT lose this game, it was our offense, and specifically the play calling, specifically Frost.  Peace and love to our Huskers.

  7. Rewatched most of the game.  And im not as low on this team as i thought i was.

Originally the D Line and O Line were my biggest dissapoinments.  After watching more closely, the D Line looks ok, even taking into account the weak OLine they were facing.

As far as the O line, the pass protection was pretty good.  The run blocking wasnt as bad as it looked, as USA stacked the box on most of our runs, and we really didnt have the ball enough in the second half to gauge that.

One thing we really didnt look good at was our receiver blocking.  Our receivers are gonna need to block better if we want to be the offense we all hope for.

Our defense looked really, really good today. The two scores they had on a short field isn't something anyone can be upset about, really.

I could be wrong but it felt like we probably rotated about as many guys in this game on defense as we've seen in a while, and this was a good sign, because basically everyone played well. I said it during fall camp but I think Travis Fisher is one great coach and honestly I'll be surprised if he doesn't get offers to leave at the tail end of this season and I just hope we can see him.

One of the things I loved most was that with Alex Davis we can line up pretty well in what is basically a 5-2. I had a huge problem last with using Gifford as a stand-up defensive end as a fourth down lineman. I saw a little bit of that today but I saw more of the 5-2 look. That formation is going to be awesome in B1G West play against the run because you can seal the edges but still have Barry and probably Miller staying home in the middle.

    Tannor is incredibly athletic.

The edge blitzes were so refreshing. Jackson is a man on fire out there. Every single guy that saw a snap looked hungry to fly to the ball and I think Chinander deserves a lot of props for motivating that group. There is absolutely enough talent out of the 20ish guys that could see snaps out there to help us win the West this season.

Agree.  I think we are so dissapointed with our lack of physical dominance in this game, that noone is really appreciating the positives our defense showed.  Our D Line did look a bit over hyped though, and its hard to tell how much of our defensive performance was us being good, vs USA being bad on offense.

But either way, the defense scored as many points as they gave up, considering half of USA's points were essentially given up by our offense or special teams.

I always thought that. For the past like 15 years.  I finally realized that what we showed was what we were.  We had no secret awesome sauce, no hell to unleash.  Vanilla and crappy was the best we had to offer.  Now with Frost's comments above, I'd say he went in as vanilla  and bare bones as possible. By design to add as we go along and not show our hand too soon.  He put nothing useful on film for anyone except for our own guys to see blown plays and missed assignments.  The OL getting beat like  a drum, Martinez playing far below his abilities and miscues ie TO's, high snaps, issues with Mo etc caused some issues that I am sure he didn't anticipate.  Not having the complete game plan, you go with what you have.  The D stepped up and did nothing different save actually play much better and get the TO's. No exotic blitzes or formations.  They just made plays.  IMHO, had we made half of the tackles we missed, a lot of the discussions become moot.  The game isn't close.

IMHO, Frost felt the O had enough in the tank to win.  It didn't and the D did what it was built to do.  Got the TO's and made the stops.

I still think Martinez has something going on.  I used the word earlier in this thread that he looked apathetic when playing today.  Unusual for him.  Like he didn't have that competitive drive going.  Just my .02

I have no idea of course, but you never know with 18-22 year old college kids.  Part of what makes college sports so much more entertaining to me.  Could have just been in a mellow mood lately, or just a lil warn out from all the hype around him.  Or having a relationship issue with a lady, etc etc.  Or none of that, and he just didnt play well.  He never seems to show a lot of emotion even when he clearly is driven and playing his a$$ off.  Not to mention the offense barely played the entire second half, and the defense was confusing him a little bit.

He did miss some wide open targets a few times, so i agree that he appeared less driven/focused.  But as to if he really was, or why, we have no way to know other than those who are very close to him.  Frost even looked the same way, but he is the same as Martinez in that he really doesnt get too high or too low, and as Frost said Martinez will be fine, the bigger concern is the lack of physicality and blocking.

On a positive, the Defense played with a ton of fire.  I was a lil dissapointed in the D Line, but the whole defense played with a lot of passion.  That was fun to watch.

I wonder if they just had no motivation to play this particular team, thinking they could just show up and get the W - I thought that was in the past, but now, thinking it isn’t.  I can recall that even in a loss, the CU game last year was at least fun to watch the offense work.  This was about like paint drying.

Yea we looked better in our first game last year, than we did in our first game this year.  We won so thats good...but i think Husker fans have to be about as dissapointed today as realistically possible, other than losing......which we seriously could have lost this game today....against South Alabama....at home....not under a new staff and scheme...this was surprising.  And yet we actually should feel somewhat fortunate to have won.

  11. Going into this game, was expecting to see a completely different attitude, discipline, and more power on the lines as compared to what Husker teams have looked like for the past 4+ years.

    What we learned:

***keep in mind this was against a terrible team***

    1.  The #1 thing that surprised me was our o-line didnt look any better, in fact, it looked even less powerful than our weak O-lines of late.  We still cant get any push on the run.  Imagine how bad our run game would have looked if that were Wisconsin or Iowa out there on defense.  We made S. Alabama look like THE Alabama defensively.

    2. We are supposed to have a really good D-line.  While they looked "decent" against S. Alabama, against Wisconsin or Iowa how is that gonna look?  I was expecting more from our D-line.  That is supposed to be the strength of our defense, we are thin @ LB and in the secondary, if our D-line is just average, im worried about our defense.

    3. Our overall Defense:  we did look pretty good overall, however was that more about how bad USA was? That question remains until we play a better opponent.  They did seem to have many open receivers, and just missed them many times.   Im worried about better teams passing on us.

4.Overall Offense: nothing to see here, we couldnt run the ball between the tackles, and receivers didnt seem to be able to get open.  Adrian had plenty of time, and still couldnt find an open receiver......against SOUTH ALABAMA.  Now i expect Adrian to play better in the future, but can our receivers get open??  An even bigger concern is can we run between the tackles against teams like Wisconsin?

Certainly a concerning game, it seemed everyone from the crowd, to Frost, to the TV announcers, to even 2AM was shockingly underwhelmed with how our offense truly looks against someone other than our own defense.  I hope im wrong, but its making me think that we thought our D-Line looked good in practice only because our O-Line is worse than we thought.  We will find out over the next 2 weeks if our defense is truly much improved over last year.  Wishful thinking is that USA is better than advertised.

Interesting new tidbit. The change in ownership on this message board has changed a few things. Notably, each thread page now only has 15 posts instead of 50.

That changes the Scott Frost megathread from around 250 pages (I don't actually remember what it was before) to a now unbelievable 1,127 pages.

We did it guys! We had well over 1,000 pages!

Looks like 7 pages to me. Am i missing something?? Dont make me put you on your a$$!
