    93. NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS

    Highest-graded player: OT Brenden Jaimes – 72.5 (84th)

Nebraska's offensive line did a good job of limiting the number of times their quarterback was put on the ground, as they combined to allow the 27th-fewest sacks and hits. They ranked 60th in pass-blocking grade as a unit but were undone by the fact that they ranked 113th in the run game.

If Jaimes is the best we have, then we are in big trouble (based on 2019 performance). I don't recall how many replays I watched this year where Jaimes got beat resulting in a negative play or failure to convert type of situation..but I remember his name being one that I felt always missed or got beat when it counted most. Maybe I am being a little unfair to him, but it's just what I remember from watching replays this season.

The sad thing is, a lot of teams use the swing pass to great success.   NU not so much.  Maybe since Cally and Marlon Lucky......Seems like we really telegraph the play or do things like motion to the swing side to bring over the LB'er.....Like what was pointed out swing pass after swing pass vs Iowa....

Yep, I watched the swing pass have some great success yesterday in a few different games.

Every time a team ran it, it looked way different than ours though, at least in the way that the defense was defending. What I saw work to perfection was the team would have 2 WR to the side, they would run the outside WR on a fly and they would float the slot WR to the sideline. The only other defender out there was a LB or Nickel playing about 10 -12 yards off of the slot WR every time.

The crazy thing is when other teams ran it, it wasn't anything surprising or exceptional, it was usually actually fairly slow developing. The main difference was that the person guarding the slot WR would never jump the swing pass route (something that every single team does automatically when we run it, not to mention they are playing about 3-5 yards off of us).

All the guy would do is catch the ball, had 10 yards of open field and (ONE) slower less athletic defender on him every single time.

I hope none of the "3-4 will never work" crowd are watching two playoff teams run that defense. And both - especially Oklahoma - running a configuration almost identical to what we do.

That Oklahoma defense does look pretty identical to what we do...can't argue there.

  4. Looking at TAMUCCs W-L this season they have beat a lot of teams that I didn't even realize existed...but they've also had some very close losses to some P5 schools like Vandy and TAMU.

The way we've played so far this season we could win by 20 or lose by 15..depends which Nebraska team shows up. Looking at TAMUCC roster they play a couple of guys that are 6'8 and a guy that is 6'10. I could see them, like every team we've played this year, destroying us on the boards and getting a lot of 2nd and 3rd chance putbacks...hope I am wrong. This is obviously one we should easily win, then again so was North Dakota.

I like the class but if we give an A then are we saying we can't go higher?  Let's not limit ourselves.  I give it a B+ as we finished at #18.  Been saying on this board forever we need to be in Top 15 to start playing for championships and that is where I would give an A, so we are close and this is definitely the right direction.  I don't like it that North Carolina (a basketball school is finishing ahead of us as a blue blood football program).  Was glad to see us beat Texas (and was also interesting Mack Brown and North Carolina beat Texas).  Tennessee is a bit of a head-scratcher as to how they finished that high.  Thought Washington might come down as well by losing Petersen.  Call me biased but we should be beating the TN's and WA's.  We are not currently but need to be in the future.

Interesting Maryland and Purdue finished ahead of Wisconsin.  Baylor and VA Tech struck me as oddly low.  USC has fallen off the map.  Now is the time to come into SoCal and grab some talent.  Helton is a lame duck.  I live out here and don't think I have heard anyone who thought retaining him was a good idea.  Many pointed to the lackluster recruiting as further evidence he needed to be gone.  Twitter of Matt Leinart...

    Usc recruiting?? Wow!

Oregon is the new Usc in recruiting on the West Coast... back in my day no one dared to recruit So Cal. Now it’s open season and Oregon is hunting!

Only thing I can think of here is that obviously Tennessee smack dab in the middle of a recruiting hotbed. Now...same can be said for USC and look how that turned out..so your point is definitely valid. Tennessee has the ability to pull kids from Alabama, Georgia, The Carolinas, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, Missouri and still be close to being one state away for kids that want to stay close to home. Think of how many top end recruits are in those states and still can play close-is to home.

The odd thing is after all of their head coaching issues last couple years, didn't effect them one bit in recruiting..

Ultimately, it's a no-win situation for Adrian. He could win the job outright in both Spring and Fall camps, but the same birds that have been chirping all season will come back with the "Frost handed him the job" narrative, and at the very first sign of any sort of problem, will begin crowing again like they did this season.

I don't disagree with you here....but if the problems last the entire season again they will crowing rightfully so.

I haven't waded through this entire thread but I assume there has been speculation about his health and surgery after the season.  This would seem to support that.

IF this is indeed the case, it really makes me question why when the other two were healthy they didn''t see more playing time. If it hindered him that much, in effect hindering the team, then why would you not play someone who isn't banged up. I realize that Vedral was banged up at times too...but not the whole season.

  8. I think what it all comes down to is no one other than the 3 of them TRULY knows what actually happened....there a million and one ways this could have went down, who are we to say they didn't actually do it, maybe they really are terrible guys and are guilty...maybe the woman was mad at them for something else and they did and made some parts of it up or exaggerated, maybe it was consensual, but then she changed her mind, or they were all so blitzed or drunk they all didn't remember the details....who knows... I am not saying they are guilty, I am not saying they are innocent. Its he said she said unless there is more evidence coming from this.

That being said you can't automatically believe her, and you can't automatically discount her...end of story IMO.

  9. This is my number one guy I think for the success of this offense next year that is a must get. If we don't get him we better land someone very similarly built in a grad transfer otherwise our offense next year may look much the same as it did this year is my fear.

I figured you were saying "Why didn't Frost tell everybody that Martinez was hurt during the season?"

Someone else can chime in but I think Frost did actually hint in one of the last pressers that Martinez had been playing injured. He just didn't go into specifics.

Eerily similar to another Martinez....hobble an injured QB out there who can't do what he is supposed to do instead of playing a possibly not as talented backup (maybe debatable) who is probably at or much closer to 100%...guess we didn't learn our lesson the first time.

in your last two post you act like you went to practice and saw something better then was on the field during game day.  There's a good chance the staff watched him during hundreds of practice hours and realized that he wasn't as good as the guy on the field.  Also you bring a guy in and run a single group of plays to him and the defense learns quickly what is going on.

I haven't ever claimed to know more than the coaches, I'm positive they know better than anyone, but it's odd to me that the guys on the field who haven't been performing aren't ever really replaced, no one else is given their shots when our starters can't do anything game after game...if they're given a shot and they're worse..so be it, put the first guy who already wasn't doing anything back in..what do you have to lose (nothing). Your last sentence also sounds like what we did all year already...so there's that.

    Block.  They don't block.

Ok, i get that....so why not use him on special teams, why not use him as a KR OR PR ..why not use him as a jet sweep guy... why not pass to him on our beloved swing passes? None of those require blocking. Would we really refuse to use a guy with speed in positions to allow him to try to be a game changer just cuz he can't block?

Woodyard is incredibly fast. How he (and the staff) couldn't figure out how to get him serviceable for even just a Go route is confusing.

Agree.....i feel like this staff..along with past staff as well...kind of stuck to who was going to play and wasn't really ever Willing to throw a guy out there to see if they could make anything happen in a game. There were a few games this year that woulda been perfect to see what the bench guys could do, yet we still stuck with pretty much our starters  even when it was pretty evident they weren't doing much of anything either...this goes for several positions on the field...its head scratching for sure to wonder what these guys do ..or don't do to even get a fair look in a game.

This offense NEEDS more Omar Mannings.

Absolutely agree here. I think this is one of the reasons our offense was so bad this year. We had NO downfield threat whatsoever. We need WR who are over 5 10 and can win some jump balls downfield and out on the edge. Every team we played this year knew we were only running it or doing a swing pass, makes it pretty easy to press and stack the box and defend when you know your opponent cant pass the ball more than a few yards downfield.

It was definitely one of the factors, yes.

I don't disagree with you at all here, for losses and poor play early in the season.

Another factor I think in the early part of the season was just the O Line in general.

The main factor in losses towards the middle to end of the year in my opinion as Jurgens and the offense improved AM seemed to just keep getting worse and worse. I think poor QB play alone accounted for at least 2 of our losses, maybe more...
