I'm sure I'm missing something here, because my brain apparently doesn't seem to be working. But can you, or anyone else point me to where retaining the interim coach has ever worked out? I just see Clay Helton at USC 2.0 here.

Dabo Swinney is the obvious one.  But he's definitely the exception, not the norm.

Those search firms are more for the negotiating/contacting than the actual searching IMO.

While this is partially true that they act as an intermediary I believe sometimes they may bring candidates to the table that you may not even be considering.  ie Lincoln Riley.  If I had to guess USC probably didn't start their search with Lincoln Riley as a viable candidate.  But a search firm might say, "I know you have these guys as possible candidates and we will certainly evaluate them, but what if I told you we've contact with ______ coach, and we think we may be able to get him to leave for ______ price.  Then Trev might say, "No kidding, Lane Kiffin? Yea I'd definitely be interested."

aTm giving Jimbo that ridiculous contract is one of the most laughable things in all of college football. But, that's pretty much par for the course for aTm

That's why "Just throw $15 million/year at Urban" is a horrible idea.  Trying to buy success hasn't worked for the most part, in any sport.  And honestly you throw that kind of money at any person it's hard to stay hungry.  Also that's why it's easy to like Mickey right now.  He knows he isn't owed anything.

If MJ became the HC, I wonder what kind of staff he'd put together?  Obviously Busch but would he retain Whip and the other offensive coaches?  Does Busch remain DC- does he have the experience to be full time DC?  I don't want a repeat of Frost - hire a guy we like and the staff falls short. So, can he attract high quality assistants?  Those are my questions if MJ is hired.  If he is hired it will because he did something amazing over the next several weeks.

TBH, Mickey could retain Busch and Applewhite and hire family members for every other position and it would be far better than what we've had for the last 10 years!

I think you hire Mickey for his leadership qualities, his ability to relate to players and to manage people.  You then go out and pay big $ for top notch coordinators that will run the schemes you desire.  We already know Trev will clear Mickey to pay whatever he needs so I doubt he'd have any trouble getting guys to work for him.  No doubt Busch would remain, but I don't think it would be as the DC.  I could see him getting a ST coordinator associate HC type title.   I think the only way you go this route with Mickey is if you hire a proven successful DC.   My gut feeling is that Whipple is going to be one year and he'll go back to the NFL in some capacity next year even if Mick is retained.  Joe Brady perhaps?  I think in any scenario that Mickey ends up as HC,  we would have a recruiting dream team at the very least.

Before we forget, I think it's important to remind everyone that 2 of the most loved & respected coaches on this board were promoted to HC after being assistants with no head coaching experience. Who are those? Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer. In fact, many of the most successful coaches in our time were promoted assistants with no head coaching experience. Another good example (though I detest what he has done to his alma mater) is Barry Alverez.

So, before writing Mickey off please keep an open mindset and give Mickey a fair assessment. Everyone on the board said Frost was safe with 7 wins and a bowl appearance. (safe at least for 1 more season) Trev said it wasn't about wins and losses as much as it was about player development and progress. These things should be the measuring stick for Mickey as well. Lastly, I can't help but wonder how much Mickey will lean on his family for advice and guidance. That family bleeds together and Mickey I'm sure will take full advantage of their input.

I'm going preface what I'm about to say with I never thought up until now that Mickey was a serious candidate for HC.  But I'm going to do a 180 and say that I think he is VERY much being considered.  Trev and Mickey played together so they go way back.  In my opinion Mickey was hired by Trev, not Scott.  If you put the puzzle pieces together it's easy to believe that Mickey ending up here when he did is more than a coincidence.  He didn't leave the comfort of his home state, which is full of talent for the position that he coached for a tiny pay raise.  He came here with the intention of being the next HC.

  7. I noticed on Twitter is lots of former players congratulating AM which is no surprise. Then it got me thinking, I never seen one single reaction or Tweet in support of Frost from any formers players either. Not a single one

Nobody is talking about MJ new contract and that he has it stated in there that he must be retained if they hire a new coach other then hiring him as a head coach

No it doesn’t. It states that he returns to his role upon the hiring of a new coach. The new coach is not obligated to keep him in that role though.

I like the Bieniemy idea!  An experienced NFL guy would attract high level recruits and I would trust his ability to build a coaching staff that would develop pro-caliber athletes.  That's why I suggested hire Mickey's brother Vance to assist Mickey and build a program.

Yea cause it worked so well for us before!

LOL Aranda isn't coming anywhere near Nebraska.

He got his team to a Big 12 championship last year.  There are more opportunities for him to keep winning there, especially with OU & UT leaving.  And his backyard is a recruiting hotbed. Life is good.  Life is great.

Word is he’s tired of playing second fiddle to Chip and Joanna Gaines in Waco.  Why did Lincoln Riley leave a perennial top 5 school to go to USC?

Reduce the seating capacity.  They need to get down to 65k ish, new restrooms and better food/beer.  That is the only way you continue getting butts in seats long term.  I have started enjoying road games more than home games due to being crammed in.

Yea, for some reason there's been a lot of empty seats in my section this season so we've been able to spread out a bit at least.

  12. This is perfect in my opinion.  It will increase revenue at basketball and baseball games.  I'm not a big baseball fan but going to the ballpark on a nice spring afternoon and having a beer or two sounds appealing to me.  But I'm not sold on having beer in Memorial.  The seating is so damn tight I'm not excited about having a draft beer dumped down my back as people try and squeeze through the aisles.  And the pisser situation is already dreadful.

Nebraska has the FEWEST 4 & 5 star recruits in their 500 mile radius. Dead last in the P5. 65/65

So to me you really believe we can get a big name recruiter and get kids over the country with NIL, portal, etc.

    OR

You dumb down the offense. Get a few great players with a coach who develops players. Run the ball. Play gritty defense.

Personally I think 5 years ago it would have made more sense to do the latter.  Get a defensive guy and focus on the development in the trenches.  With this strategy you would probably be years away from competing at a really high level.  But now with NIL and the transfer portal I think you go out and try and get a big name and as many great recruiters as you can.  You can literally flip your roster in 1-2 years and be competitive right away.  That being said if you go that route it really has to be a "home run" or it won't work and you just end up with a disaster, if that makes sense.

Heck, with the way their season is going and how brutal NFL job security is, maybe Zac Taylor?

I was with you until you threw out Zac Taylor. This is a great swing for the fences list otherwise though.
