Basically, Nebraska had a great dual threat quarterback in Adrian Martinez for four years, and they were four of the worst years in Nebraska football history.  A more traditional passing quarterback that turns the ground game over to a featured 25- 30 carry RB is a difference worth trying.  I think two coaching staffs and a lot of fans see Casey Thompson as clearly preferable to Logan Smothers.

Absolutely. Frost was great at developing a lethal quarterback run game with Adrian, but that was far too much out of necessity not having the development/talent at the RB position to lean on.

Both quarterbacks have had to deal with god awful lines, and while Casey has the benefit of Grant, Adrian had the benefit of much greater escapability. They're overall remarkably similar in terms of their physical ability throwing the ball - the best thing Casey has had going for him is better decision making, and even that isn't all that drastic but it is absolutely an edge. Basically all I'm saying is that it doesn't take being down on the former guys to appreciate the current guy.

While I somewhat agree, Liberals are pushing for inclusion in areas where differences in biology are apparent - inclusion in female sports or biological men going to prisons with women.

Now, both these issues are somewhat minor but liberals are increasingly refusing to acknowledge the differences between gender and Sex and its caused them to have to defend stupid policy positions on the campaign trail, in a time where their ability to win elections is diminishing by the year.

While I think your criticisms are wildly overblown (essentially a tiny but loud minority of young people and college students caring about something too much), I'll take going too far in the direction of something like differences in gender/sex than too far in the direction of a fascist authoritarian nation state, gun flagellation and ruining our planet for money any day.

There have been passes thrown by Casey that we just haven't seen or been used to...  and it's very impressive.  Well, I haven't seen a Husker QB make these kind of TD passes regularly (weekly).  It's not yolo or hold the ball, scramble, run and throw.  Just incredible passes that are timing plays.

Northwestern - the 35  yard sideline TD pass to Castenada was absolutely perfect
North Dakota - the quick strike to Boerkircher for 20 yards was perfect; The rollout pass to Brewington for a TD was thrown so he could catch turn and run
Georgia Southern - great pass to Brody Belt for  20 yard score.
OU - Casey dropped a dime - perfectly thrown 35 yard TD pass to Palmer
Indiana - another perfect pass - to Oliver Martin for 35 yard TD score; another absolutely perfect ball thrown to Palmer for 70 yard score
Rutgers - Bam-Bam - The quick/immediate release (pass) thrown to Vokolek for 10 yard TD;  And The dagger - a great TD pass thrown to Palmer for 35 yard winning TD.

Casey's playing well, but there's no reason to overstate this to the point of being pure fiction. I've timestamped some similar throws.

    Perfect sideline pass?

Quick strike to a streaking tight end?

Thrown to a spot for the receiver to catch and run?

Long balls put in the perfect spot?

Would you like to shift gears to examples from universities that have canceled various speakers that some students were upset about? That sort of takes the money issue out of it.

Are you suggesting that you don't believe people get paid to speak at colleges...?

Liberals tripping over themselves to make this issue a defining characteristic of their party are fighting the wrong battle and costing themselves elections. Trying to equate Gender with Sex is one of the biggest mistakes they've made electorally speaking.

    Who's doing these two things?

The coach who can get us to top 20 finishes with top 50 talent is the coach who can recruit top 15 classes here.

Not being an apologist...just saying that with all the s#!t we have been through, an interim OC for the last 3 games, who is actually making some adjustments in game, and ultimately helps the team win games should not be a "let's find faults NOW!!!" focus. If he is gone next year, which is more likely than not, than great...but the team is winning (for now) at a pace that is unheard of relative to the past couple years. And I for one am just playing with house money right now as a fan.

Whipple is not an interim OC.

If Joesph were such a great coach he not only would be at the top of Alberts list but other schools would reach out to him.

Every coach who's ever had a successful career had one place give them a chance before anyone else did.

"If Mike Kryzewski was such a great coach in 1975 he would've gotten hired by somewhere better than Army." See how dumb that sounds?

This isn't surprising.  I've never understood the hatred for him with some fans.  He helped bring back the coach that 99% of the fans wanted.  Then, almost instantly, fans didn't like him.

I never liked him because I always got the sense he was a grifter coasting off of one single moment when he was 18 years old for the rest of his life.

I was glad he was around in a utilitarian sense to help seal the deal with Frost, and he used to actually be a pretty good color guy, but he wore out his welcome about a decade ago.

I’m glad someone finally said it. A lot of average to below average in the B1G West. The league has done a great job of rebranding mediocrity as “toughness.” Really a shame Neb hasn’t had their s*** together these last few years. The division has been up for grabs for years, hard not to think we left some on the table.

The west is obviously not comparable to the east, but it's been a strong division. It's just down this year specifically. Last year you had Iowa through Purdue all with 9 wins or better, during the COVID year NW and Iowa finished #10 and #15, and the year before it was #11 Wisconsin, #10 Minnesota and #15 Iowa.

Only because Netflix, or whoever does his show, didn’t cave to the protests. Didn’t he recently get a show cancelled at a venue…..in Minneapolis maybe? I might be thinking of a different comedian.  I just remembered that the actress from the Mandalorian was let go pretty quickly by Disney. If I remember right, claiming only two genders and comparing the US political climate to Nazi Germany did her in.  The Nazi comparison happens so often these days it’s getting old.

I am not so sure the left has won the culture wars. They are certainly forcing the issues and people that disagree with those issues generally keep their mouth shut for the same reasons we are having this discussion.

Gina Carano wasn't technically let go - she wasn't currently doing any work for Lucasfilm since Mando had already wrapped shooting, they just decided not to bring her back and then grandstanded about it. But it also wasn't because of those one or two tweets, those were the straw that broke the back at the end of pieces slowly building.

Regardless, she's a much better example (though still a bad one, as all celebrities are) of cancel culture than Chappelle is.

I definitely agree with your last sentence.

But I guess I don't remember any that fit that description that flamed out.  There probably are, I just don't know of any.

    Do you?

Just a few from a quick search session:

Will Healey went from FCS Austin Peay to FBS Charlotte and has gone 7-6, 2-4, 5-7, and 1-5 so far this year.

Mike Houston had massive success in DII and FCS and has gone 4-8, 3-6, 7-5, and 3-2 at East Carolina.

Hal Mumme went from Valdosta State to Kentucky and ended with a 20-26 record in the 90s. Then he did it again going from Southeastern Louisiana to New Mexico State where he went 11-38.

Dino Babers has had middling success at Bowling Green and then Syracuse.

    Same with Willie Fritz.

Everett Withers, Mike London, Rich Ellerson, Bobby Johnson are some others

    This is unbelievable.

There must be some dirt or fiery disagreements behind the scenes within the coach, AD and media.  But I doubt it.

He was obviously trending down. It's surprising that Wisconsin's AD was actually aggressive in this, and that it was so early, but this is essentially their version of firing Solich.

Probably done too soon, but would've eventually gotten there either way.

  14. Busch had our guys playing fast and loose and aggressive to great success, especially in the secondary - even when they completed passes we were glued to them. Great to watch.

Honestly looked like a completely different ball team - that's how you use a bye week to get right.

Just because it's easier to do it now, doesn't mean it hasn't always existed.

Groupthink and mob mentalities have always existed. The efficiency of how successfully the mob is able to dramatically ruin people's livelihoods/privacy/peace is dramatically increased, and that is something we need to figure out how to handle. Shrugging it off as having always been a thing isn't useful. That's like not caring to make cars safer and drivers education better because we've always traveled distances with horses/buggies/etc. Yes we're doing the 'same' things, but the tools have changed and learning how to safely use the tools is the important part.

  16. 3 hours ago, BigRedBuster said:

Exactly.  What they call cancel culture has been going on since the beginning of time. Now, all of a sudden, it's a huge political issue because Republicans want to use it to motivate their masses.

The ability to gather and coordinate and harass at scale is something new with the emergence of social media, and there are plenty of easy examples to look at to realize it is a real phenomenon that isn't just a meritocracy of consequences.

He didn't turn on his country. He served his country by revealing how the government had turned on its country.

And choosing between either having some modicum of freedom for the second half of your life versus being locked away forever for doing the right thing is an easy choice and the same one you and I would make.

Ask Dave Chappelle. I actually hear comedians complaining not people complaining for them. I wonder how long Andrew Dice Clay would survive in today’s climate and he was from the 90s ….or before.

Dave Chappelle is still getting $50 million standup special deals.

Cancel culture is a real thing that is more prominent on the left (because the left has essentially won the culture wars) but god damn do right-sympathizing folks make it hard to talk about by strawman-ing and overblowing the issue at every turn.

  19. Lance Leipold, who is in his 16th season as a head coach and has shown essentially across three different divisions that he has what it takes to be successful and build a program from ashes, has a body of work that's "too small", but Dave Aranda, four games into year three as a head coach taking over a winning program, is a satisfiable candidate.

    uh.. ok
