The Spartans have made six Final Fours in the last 16 seasons and made 17 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Izzo, who is in his 20th year at MSU, lost three starters, including a pair of first-round draft picks, from a team which reached the Elite Eight. This season, Michigan State comes into Saturday’s game with a 13-6 record despite having several players miss time with injuries. MSU is sixth in the Big Ten at 73.4 points per game while leading the conference in 3-point percentage (.398). As is often the case, the Spartans are exceptional on the glass, leading the Big Ten in rebounding margin at +7.6 per game, while ranking second in field goal defense (.383). The Spartans are led by a trio of veterans in Denzel Valentine, Travis Trice and Branden Dawson. Valentine leads MSU with 13.8 points per game while averaging 5.8 rebounds and shooting 43 percent from long range. Trice, who is one of the Big Ten’s most improved players, is at 13.6 points and 5.6 assists per game to rank second in the Big Ten. Dawson is at 11.5 points per game while pacing the Big Ten with 9.6 rebounds an outing. In conference action, he is averaging 12.7 points and 11.3 rebounds a game.

Pitino, who coached at Florida International for a season before taking the Minnesota job, guided the Golden Gophers to a 25-13 record and the NIT title in 2013-14. Minnesota, which returned four starters from last year, went 11-2 in non-conference action with the only losses coming at St. John’s in preseason NIT and against Louisville. Minnesota has struggled at times in Big Ten action, dropping its first five games before earning an 89-80 win over Rutgers on Saturday afternoon. Minnesota has been in nearly every game, dropping four of its five games by five points or less, including a two-point overtime loss to Ohio State and a two-point loss against Iowa. Minnesota thrives on its defense, as the Gophers average a Big Ten-leading 11.1 steals per game and force nearly 19 turnovers per game. Senior Andre Hollins averages 13.4 points per game and has a team-high 47 3-pointers. He is one of four Gophers in double figures while two other players average at least nine points per contest.

Ryan, who is in his 14th season in Madison, has guided the Badgers to 13 NCAA Tournaments, including six appearances in the NCAA Sweet 16 and last year’s final four appearance. The 2014-15 Badgers have four starters back, including preseason All-American Frank Kaminsky, and have been in the top five in the ranking for nearly the entire season. UW was 15-1 with the only loss coming to No. 2 Duke on Dec. 3 before Rutgers topped the short-handed Badgers on Sunday. Wisconsin won the Battle 4 Atlantis and has wins over Cal, Georgetown and Oklahoma in non-conference play. Not only was Wisconsin without Kaminsky, who averages team-highs in both scoring (16.9 ppg) and rebounding (8.2 rpg), but also lost Traevon Jackson to a right foot injury in the second half. Jackson is expected to miss several weeks of action. Wisconsin comes into the contest averaging 73.5 points per game while ranking second in the Big Ten in field goal percentage. The Badgers, who lead the conference in fewest turnovers per game (8.3 per game) also boast a Big Ten leading defense, allowing just 54.9 points per game. In addition to Kaminsky, Sam Dekker averages 12.4 points per game while Nigel Hayes is at 12.2 points on 56 percent shooting and 7.1 rebounds per outing.

The effort was highlighted by a 28-point performance from sophomore Malcolm Hill, as he went 9-of-18 from the field, including four 3-pointers, and 11 points, nine rebounds and four blocked shots from senior center Nnanna Egwu. Illinois, which went 20-15 and reached the second round of the NIT last season for third-year coach John Groce, had four returning starters, but have been without senior guard Tracy Abrams, who will miss the entire season following knee surgery. The Illini lost a second starter for an extended time, as senior guard Rayvonte Rice suffered a broken left hand earlier this week and will be out several weeks. Rice was Illinois’ leading scorer (17.2 ppg) and rebounder (6.9 rpg) at the time of the injury. The Illini opened the year with six straight wins, including a 62-54 victory over Baylor in the Las Vegas Invitational, before faltering with three losses in a four-game stretch, including to then-nationally ranked Miami and No. 7 Villanova. In Big Ten play, Illinois lost a pair of road games at Michigan, where the Wolverines came back from a 13-point second-half deficit and won in OT, and at Ohio State before knocking off Maryland in its Big Ten home opener. Hill is second on the team in scoring at 14.0 points per game while chipping in 5.7 rebounds per outing, while fellow sophomore Kendrick Nunn is at 8.6 points per game, including 44 percent from 3-point range. As a team, Illinois shoots 37 percent from long distance and is holding opponents to under 40 percent shooting.
  9. Good on Moss for taking this in stride. Have to think he was being led to believe there was a good chance at readmission if he stuck around this long. Not excusing his original crime by any means but the University really botched this, not from a football standpoint but from a human standpoint.
  10. Only downside to this is that a track record of horrendous officiating is not enough to get you fired from reffing big-time college basketball. We'll see if and when other conferences will allow him to officiate again and what the NCAA Tournament will do with him as well.
  11. For anyone not following HuskerHoops on Snapchat, their SnapStory today is 'The Return of Big Mo' so Moses may be back tonight
