How is handing the reins of a blue blood football program for 9 games to a guy who's never even been a coordinator "rushing to replace him"? He's been given a more than fair shot to show what he's got.

i couldn’t agree more. Zero chance that Trev doesn’t know this as well. We can move on from the Mickey discussion.

Even with Aranads free fall would you still consider him a good catch with his connections with mickey and LSU.

I would still be happy with Aranda. Things didn’t go their way yesterday. He still has the pedigree. Can afford a better staff around him here. Just my opinion.

What’s one trait or qualifier Nebraska should emphasize in looking for its next coach?
I vote for player development.  What say you?

That’s what Trev said so I would expect that’s what is being emphasized on this hire so I will say player development

you think he'd tell a local media member that he got the job before it's released by the university?

Normally no, but Strickland and Deion are friends. I am sure Strick knows Deion isn't coming and knew that was a safe text exchange.

Fairly confident.  Again, several people removed, but no reason my guy would make up something. Huge Husker fan as well.  So not the type to just make stuff up to give me false hope if that makes sense.

Of course on the rumor thread there was a good podcast about Deion coming here.  Who knows at this point.

I would be ecstatic with either of these guys. I am happy this Deion rumor came about today. Will make my afternoon fly by!

I hear it's going to be Aranda.  *Purely rumor* One of those 3 people removed, but the actual "source" would potentially be in a position to know.  Don't shoot the messenger.  Would make sense with nothing coming out, kids still committing and MJ still recruiting.  Maybe Aranda, Orgeron, MJ, BB, and OC to yet be guessed.  Who knows....

That’s where I am landing today as well. It just makes way too much sense from a fit and instant continuity standpoint. If Grimes doesn’t come with Aranda and takes a HC position somewhere I could see Joe Brady joining the staff to run a RPO offense like they did at LSU

Houston is the only team I can find that utilizes it. The difference is small but significant. In terms of the coaching hierarchy, associate coaches are one step above a normal assistant coach and one step below a head coach. This gives them quite a bit of power and if the team designates an associate coach, it does make them the true second in command in the locker room.

So I did find something to answer my own question. In 2019 LSU had Ed Orgeron as the Head Coach and Dave Aranda as the associate head coach/Defensive coordinator and Tommie Robinson as Assistant Head Coach/ Running game coordinator/ and Running backs coach.

    No doubt!

There’s rumors out there.  This may  not have been 100% Trev’s call at the time or at minimum he had influence from high level boosters to keep Scott.

I have heard the same thing. Trev had to take the bullet to prove them wrong and boy did he. Mickey was put in place for a reason and I am sure Mickey knew there was a good chance Frost would be gone when he took the job. That's why I feel the head coaching search truly began last offseason. Its super quiet because things have probably been resolved for some time now and anything we read or hear is probably just a smear campaign until after Iowa.

What's the difference? I don't know that I've ever seen "associate head coach" I always just assumed people meant "assistant" when they say that or that they're one in the same.

Starting to feel like there is an agreement in place with someone and Mickey is in place, either as HC or AHC.

Do we have any examples of a coaching staff that has an Associate head coach and are successful? I honesty don't know so wanted to put this question out there if you all know.

Any word on whether Fickell might be considered by Trev?  I am seeing a private plane departing for Cincy Friday morning.  I know he has a contract in place through 2028 so he may be off the table.

Would be awesome if he was, but doubtful that flight is of substance. The Bearcats play tomorrow night.

Leipold or Rhule would be awesome IMO. Those 2 and Fickell would be the top tier of my coaching hot board (of realistic candidates at least).

I have no problem with either of those choices tbh. Fickell is #1 on my list as well so I agree with you there. Leipold or Rhule would be a great hire especially with all the strong rumors of Mickey staying around in some capacity.

You can argue that there were SEVERAL well designed plays during the entirety of Frost's tenure, that simply if the pass had been thrown accurately, or the stone hands of the wide open receiver caught the ball we'd have many more wins and people would still be grumbling, at our in tact coaching staff led by Frost. That's the thing that sucks is that we've been so close that one dropped ball across multiple games has butterflied into a completely new trajectory for Husker Football. Alternate universes, butterfly effect and all that mumbo jumbo.

Absolutely. Hell if the onside kicks this season are recovered he has giant stones and what a call!

What would you guys think if Gary Patterson was named Head Coach and Mickey Joseph named the Associate Head Coach? Seems like a possibility based on the recent Feldman list. Applewhite would clearly stay and I would guess Busch has earned a spot as well. I mean TCU is undefeated with Patterson's players. :stir

Also, I have heard recruits say Nebraska wants to move to a RPO system next season, who are some offensive coordinators that would fit that bill? Does Joe Brady consider rejoining Mickey in that scenario?

    For me:

    Rhule

    Leipold

    Doeren

    .

    .

    .

    Monken/Stoops

    Campbell

A few ideas I am dwelling on this am. I just cant get it out of mind that it almost has to be Rhule doesn't it? I think it got white hot last week and almost leaked 100% before damage control took over. I don't think Trev wants anything out until Iowa week, but wouldn't be surprised something was locked up with someone, perhaps Rhule last week.

Ted carters twitter was following Luke Fickell and Lane Kiffin as of last weekend before the social media detectives noticed that was the only two head coaches he follows. It appears that Ted has removed those follows after rumors started spreading about why he was following them.

DB said on his show yesterday he sees Mickey as a million dollar associate head coach/coordinator. Local radio shows keep saying Mickey is their lean for HC. No one has a clue.

Trev has done such a good job with this search he is driving us all crazy as it has been 59 days without an answer. I would say anything is possible.

    Fun hypothetical:

If it's Doeren, does he bring Beck and Garrison as assistants?

    I think Garrison for sure

I've pretty much refrained from talking about possible coaches because history shows that some rando usually follows the firing of a fan-favorite and the leaks never get it right at all.

But here are some thoughts on Rhule: Does the guy really give a s*** about trying hard at anything at this point, given that the Panthers owe him $40M still? So we're talking about what they still owe him...and that's on top of what he's accrued from his previous two gigs.

That's kind of where I think the sweet spot is more of the Matt Campbell kind of guy; it isn't just about the resume, it's also stage of career and projections about motivation level.

And to me, Matt Campbell is the type of coach that would be highly motivated to run through a brick wall to be successful here. Again, is his resume the greatest? No. But that isn't necessarily everything.

Would you take the job?  Just asking because I know I would be happy on an island somewhere. However, Coaches are wired different and the competitive edge keeps em going. I know business owners that love winning so much that they keep going and building,  even though they could sell at a big profit and go away. Its in their blood and the only thing I really worry about with Rhule is that he would leave for Penn State.

What do we think of Kyle Whittingham at Utah? More often or not seems to be around 9 or 10 wins.

At Utah he is 151-72. Has been to big time bowl games winning the Sugar and Fiesta and most importantly the famed Foster Farms Bowl.

Great coach. Would welcome him here for sure.

  19. I think for everyone hoping for their favorite candidate (that’s currently coaching) the silence is hope. I don’t think Trev is waiting for Mickey to do something. He can’t afford to. My guess Trev is down to final interviews or has his main guy verbally approved for hire. If it’s a big name coach they will be coaching until their conference championship games if they make it and we should not want to hear a peep or risk losing that said candidate. Some examples could be: Bielema, Kiffin, Fickell, Malzahn, Whittingham, DeBoer, Doeren, Aranda, Klieman, Liepold, and Chadwell to name a few.  I am not saying I have heard rumors about these candidates, but looking at the conference standings if we are in on any of them we will not hear and rumblings until they are eliminated from making their conference championship or after their championship game.
