Can someone tell me why I should have any hope for this program. I am starting to lean towards disbanding football all together!  Please give me hope again

Ok for a more serious reply than my last. I said this yesterday. I have mixed feelings. I think the team as a whole plays harder than I’ve seen in a while. The Defense is much improved. Special teams not a total dumpster fire anymore. I even see Oline improvement. Look at our ground numbers through two games. Rhule isn’t making excuses and throwing players under the bus like Frost. He sat at that presser yesterday and put the turnovers on himself. I think the kids want to play hard for him. These are all positives. The team is realistically a QB short of being a bowl team this year. The results may be the same but progress is being made IMO. I’m not giving up on Rhule yet. He inherited an ungodly mess and in a lot of areas has already fix things. Unfortunately his one big  mistake was going all in on Sims and that’s going to cost him this year.

Easily 2-0 with Casey Thompson. The final 2/3 final td’s came at the expense of defense having to sellout for a big play - sack/scoop/score - because the offense wasn’t going to get NU back in the game.

I didn’t like the all out blitz on third and 10+ when we were still in the game though. That play broke us IMO. We showed all day we could cover their guys. Not sure why that call at that moment

He didn’t get them ready to play… they were actually pretty bad until we started giving away turnovers. Nothing about his coaching stood out today at least to me. Yes, I will admit my bias but I do believe Rhule & Co. had a sound strategy until the fumbles started occurring.

Recruiting, sure he’s good, but I think you and those who share your mindset look at the end and use it to justify the means. I’ll be very curious if his style of running a program will hold water over the season and years going forward.

It won’t. This is a pretty thin team with some good skill position players that will get exposed when they play a decent team.

If neither QB is better than Sims, all three need to be processed out next year.   Zero reason to keep them around if they can’t bear out a guy with Sims’ turnover to touchdown ratio.

Yeah man how could HH be that much worse. Like what is he even doing here. The fact that Rhule said there was no discussion of replacing Sims at the half is really concerning for a number of reasons. It was unfair to a D that was playing their tail off. It was probably unfair to Sims to continue to allow him to fail on such a catastrophic level as well

We learned that people have no idea how to spell Jeff Sims' last name.

    One M, people.

I put forward that we use as many additional M’s as he has turnovers each week. One additional M for each turnover. So this week he will be Simmmmms(I putting the Earvin one on him as well)

Why is it Nebraska either can’t spot talent or talent won’t come here?   I remember watching Wyoming when we played Josh Allen and questioning how the hell Wyoming can get a qb like that and we can’t.  I watch college teams all day long not just high lights and I see small teams or irrelevant teams with qbs that can scramble when needed and throw the ball well.   Why can’t we have a stable of those Guys.   Don’t we have the facilities kids would love?   Fan support?   Money?   I just don’t get it.

We have had them. Our coaches weren’t able to develop them or put them in a position to succeed. Adrian was absolutely a good QB and progressively worsened here until going to K state where he played well again. Casey is a good QB. And yes Sims does have a lot of raw ability. The difference IMO is that we just haven’t really put these guys in an offensive scheme to utilize their strengths. Sims can make some really good throws(the one Bullock dropped comes to mind). But if they can’t figure out a way to simplify things to make him more effective it won’t matter. Satterfield was the one staff hire I hated and I’m really concerned I was right but I’m not going to give up on him quite yet. What Sims is doing is unprecedented and I have a hard time believing it will continue like this. I want to at least see the offense when we aren’t continually self immolating

We'll agree to disagree.  Casey is a much better QB than Simms.  Even with a bad line, I think UNL is probably 2-0 with Casey back there.

We 100% win Minny game and I think the CU game is a tossup if Casey was QB. I’ve never seen anyone as bad as Sims through two games. Not just the shear volume of TO but when and where they occur. He is a total disaster. I’m all for just starting HH and hoping for the best at this point.

Maybe we should run the option going to keep saying until it becomes ridiculously obvious

With Sims?? He can’t field a snap or hand the ball off and we want him making option pitch decisions? Nope

Is this even a viable option in 2023? So many of our (and every college's) freshman will transfer at some point. So many will not develop. By the time said freshman make their mark down the road, we'll already have been decimated on the field due to not bringing in quick starters that the future recruiting classes will just get worse.

This is the big danger. The landscape is so different now you almost have to do what Sanders did. Kids have no patience for losing or not playing anymore.

I know Deion will look like a genius. But what he has done is not sustainable. It was a quick fix, he isn’t building a program. I see this team imploding once the hype slows down and I am not hating on them at all. I saw too many little things that made me head tilt.

Be sure to reference this post because you heard it here first.

Agreed. My guess is they probably end up in the 6 or 7 win range. Which certainly is t bad after taking over 1-11. But watch the first half and early second half of that game and I don’t think there is any question that not only were we hanging with them, we were better. They will face a lot better teams then us this year. Any teams with good O and D lines will neutralize them IMO.

This is my take. D has improved.  ST has improved.  The O needs a lot of work. Saterfield may not be the right guy as OC. Sims is a miss.

Exactly. Sims is a miss. The guy does have some talent but clearly can’t be coached out of pissing down his leg in games. Was worth a shot in year one but would probably move on now with an eye toward the future. Defense is much better for sure. ST meh not sure. Coverage is better but still need to make 45 yarders. But I’m not giving up on Rhule yet. As far as comparing him to Deion, I’m not saying s#!t after two games. Nebraska owned the CU offensive line and covered those receivers perfectly until incessant turnovers and the incompetence of Sims kept them on the field to the point where any team would wear down. Anyone who can’t see this is willfully stupid. There will be a lot of money to be made betting against CU this year

We showed so many bright spots in this game. We had improvement in so many areas, too. But the mistakes in crucial moments once again hurt us.

I can honestly say I'm walking away with mixed feelings here.  We did so much better in this game but the results were still dismal for all the same reasons.

I actually totally agree with you. This team is going to be fine if we are patient. They were definitely the better team overall in the first half and were essentially destroyed by one player, Sims. You can’t expect the defense to continue to step up under these circumstances. They actually held out longer than I thought.

I would probably start looking to make a change at QB tho. I’m not saying the other two are world beaters but the defense is decent and will keep us in games if we don’t just hand the ball to the other team.

I’m not expecting to make a bowl.  But, I disagree that there is no chance make a bowl.

Right. At this point I’m not expecting anything. I think we are all a little shell shocked over the past few years. But I will not be shocked if we scratch out 6 wins on that schedule either. Pleasantly surprised yes but something about this coach gives me confidence that the darkness may be ending

Im with ColoradHusk. He played edge or rush end for us but more then likely NFL teams will want him as a linebacker.  He lacks cover skills as a linebacker and is a considered a tweener for rush end.  But what do I know I thought JoJo was going to get drafted nope:dunno

Yeah definitely no way he plays edge in the league I agree. But I could see him being converted into like a Robert Spillane type at some point or a special teams contributor somewhere as an UDFA but who knows. I certainly wish him the best. Seems like a good kid

  15. I never thought Nelson would stay. Why hang around for the first year of a rebuild and risk hurting your draft stock or getting injured. He got 2nd team All BIG honors and will get a nice paycheck for the next few years as a likely middle round pick. I would’ve scratched my head if he came back honestly
