  1. and with ryan hill and mike mcneil we do have two pretty good tight ends. From what I hear Mcneil is going to be really good and if Ryan Hill doesnt go pro for baseball I think he will be pretty good as well. Of course they arent going to be like Grashem or someone like that, but you never know and IMO they will still be a good threat.

A few HS baseball coaches I talked to here don't think Hill will get drafted. I don't know how accurate their opinions are, but thought I'd share.

  2. i will say it again, the reality is the db's are virtually all untested against big time receivers, with the exception of grix.

Grixby, Jones, and Green started every game last year (or close to it). I'll grant that Green is moving positions, but he also started about 8 games at CB the year before. So we look to have plenty of experience. The real questions about the secondary (IMO):

Will the experience translate into better play?

Will the inexperienced players move into bigger roles or even start?

Will we stay healthy or have more injuries?

Will we have a pass rush to help the secondary?

  3. I doubt Culbert will ever be big enough, or strong enough to play as a traditional WILL. What I would expect is when he is on the field that we go to more of a 4-2-5 look. Culbert would be used as the 'rover' in this instance. It would be the same as we played against Mizzou, and probably somewhat similar to how we used Mike Brown throughout the 90's.

I've heard some other people say the same thing. Which of the LB's do you take out? I'm guessing the WLB. Mizzou and Texas are the only teams that come to mind as playing the "spread" offense against which it seemed effective last year (only 1 game though). Maybe we'd use it as part of our 3rd and long package when we bring in fresh pass rushers.

  4. I was reading an article on rivals today and it was talking about Culbert and how he was doing pretty well at running back, but Callahan said that he doesnt want to hinder his potential as a strong safety. That makes Culbert, Thenarse, and Asante playing the same position. Why dont they switch one of them to free safety? Either Asante and Culbert, or Asante and Thenarse, or move Thenarse to corner, something to get all of these guys on the field at the same time. I have nothing against West being at free safety bc I know nothing about him, and Green will probably be a pretty good free safety this year, however I have seen Culbert and Thenarse play and if everything is accurate about Asante then he has to be on the field, along with the other two. If they all continue to play the same position for the next three years one maybe two of them will transfer. Cos or whoever decides their position has to find a way to get them all on the field!

To play devil's advocate here, how do you know they're even the best players available? You mention that West and Green are at FS, plus we've got 3 seniors and a junior at the 2 CB spots. That leaves SS and maybe WLB (where we have Octavian and Brandenburg, both seniors). I just don't see all 3 of Asante, Thenarse, and Culbert (all Sophmores) getting on the field at the same time, especially this year. I think Culbert is going to play RB this spring, RS this fall to get some separation between the 3, and move to WLB for 2008.

  5. I don't have the link, but Coz said recently the addition of Bowman to the secondary will allow him to man up on that side and roll a safety over for double coverage on the other (allowing Grixby to play underneath as he did in 2005). Whether Grix will retaining the starting job is up for debate, but he'll get some help with the mismatch problems.

  6. I'm not in favor of Colbert moving at all. Not because he wont be successful on offense, but he seems like such a playmaker on defense. Besides OCtavian, we have none on D

    Damn good point. I agree.

Don't forget about Bowman. Turner and Suh could also be playmakers on D. And Asante might live up to the hype.

  7. Just like the old saying, "if, if's and but's were candy and nuts, we'd all have a Merry Christmas."

I'm almost sick to death of hearing what Octo CAN do. I'm waiting to see the on-field results. So far, he has played one game and a quarter where he has truly shown he deserves to be on the field, moreso start games as a Husker.

I don't wanna hear about athleticism, speed, and al this stuff. None of that makes a football player. If I had the choice, I would take one Bo Ruud over three Steve Octavien's.

Amen. Octo MIGHT have an impact this season but I think he'll disappear into the woodwork. McKeon, Ruud, and Brandenburg have all shown a lot more on the field. Dilliard might also have an impact but he's coming back from a major injury and hasn't shown much more than Octo.

  8. Other than a very good 1st quarter against Maine 2 seasons ago, Octo hasn't impressed me. He's supposedly got potential, but he hasn't even looked as good as Ruud - that's why Ruud's starting at WLB. And rumor has it Octo has work ethic and attitude problems off the field which has gotten him into hot water with the coaches.

JMO, but I think Ruud is a very good LB, while Octo continues to just have potential. I certainly hope Octo will emerge from the depth chart, but I expect he'll ride the bench this year.

  9. I think it'll be:

    SLB: Brandenburg, Dillard

    MLB: McKeon, Dillard

    WLB: Ruud, Octavian

I could see Brandenburg and Dillard switching around though. I don't think there's any way McKeon isn't the MLB. I wouldn't be too surprised if somebody like Covey or Culbert took Octavian's spot if Octo doesn't have marked improvement in conditioning and attitude.

  10. 6' quarterback? If this kid is a 5 star, I am guessing it would be for a position other than quarterback...especially if he is a amazing athlete

Ratings are heavily based on the tangibles - like height. 6' is considered short for a QB so I'd be REALLY surprised if he gets 5 stars. He's a very good 3 star with 4 star potential as far as the services go, IMO.

  11. Heard some people here in Kansas talking about this kid. They say he's been timed at 4.2's/4.3's in the 40. Basicly expressed how amazingly good the kid is. We need to get him to Lincoln.

A good rule of thumb I use is add two-tenths of a second to any reported 40 time unless it's an electronic forty from a reliable source (like the Nike camps or NFL combine). 4.2 speed would make him one of the fastest people in the world. So he's more likely a 4.4/4.5 guy, which is still really fast.
