  1. Every single year there is a thread that goes kinda like this:

“what are you looking for” or “rank your order” that will contribute to the W/L for the Cornhuskers…

every year I have said, without fail:

turnovers and penalties.  And every year without fail we lose both categories. And we lose games (and tons of close games).

I don’t give a s#!t how our spring game looked or weapons we might have or defense plays hard blah blah blah. Take care of the ball and don’t have untimely penalties.

  2. Love how we gets the +6’4/230lb TE’s

These types of players are a point of emphasis of this staff.  I’d like to see Fidone and the kid from Texass plus the N boy do some stuff this yr and next before we anoint the new next best….

I think we need to see some real production from these amazing talents at TE show some production then I’ll believe they will be integral.
The coaches are selling it, the recruits are buying it, and I hope we see some awesome production.

  3. Competition doesn’t mean they are just playing each snap in practice to be the starter.
DR could potentially raise the play of the 2 & 3 QBs because he makes a lot throws, runs the offense, is a leader, and makes the other QBs realize they just plain need to be better.

Sometimes dudes just need to see what’s possible. The competition could be that DR makes amazing plays but isn’t polished as a D1 QB.  But the fact he shows guys “what might be possible” if they go for it and hone their skills.

in short, obviously DR is the “stater” but even tho he needs college reps, he shows guys at his position that some things are possible they might not have known they could potentially do. That will make everyone better.  The best player competing for a job can make the other guys better by showing them what’s possible.

  4. The teams that can run the ball win games.
JJ Mcarthy will be a pro QB, but it was the dominate O-line and Corum that ran the ball down some throats that won them their championship.
    Plus a dominate defense.

football, even given all the changes to the game and the rules, etc etc…if a team can run the ball, they will win with superior athletes and execution.
I hope we are balanced, but I really hope we are super tough, hard nosed and want to run first and crush opponents. If we have a good defense and can run the ball….watch out w DR to keep the chains  moving and make big plays downfield.

but we should always try n run the ball

  5. Punt returners or punt catchers?
I hope they return some punts.
Bring back the ol Osborne (I know I know, good ol days) of 2 up-back returners for a shank or positional punt, and 1 deep returner that is fearless to catch and try to gain.
I used this for my little league team for 5 years and we flipped the field over a dozen times a season. It was genius, it worked so well and it could be again.

but yeah, let’s get the punt catchers to become punt returners.

  6. My old college coach, Bob Cortese  (an Italian hardliner), used to say “punch them in throat and see if they wanna play in the 4th qtr”.

no one beat us because they were tougher than us.
I like this mentality of knuckles. They can talk about “no holding” but to me it says “we gonna punch ya.”

  7. Sounds to me like they have a plan.
I give an A- for that alone.
Also sounds like there are expectations for certain guys and they better be ready to compete.  A for that.
Finally it sounds like they are leaving the door open for anyone of these RB to separate and prove themselves to be the top dog. A+ for that.

  8. Can we win some games during the football season this year?
Are the coaches and players, on a day to day level  affected by this?
Will our players not lift enough weights, or the coaches not go thru enough film to win some games?
Will players transfer or will we lose recruits because of our AD loss?
Will the volleyball team not compete as hard?
Will the basketball team turn in their jerseys?

Will our 1 hitter strike out because of this news? Will he not steal a base?
Will our 2nd team women’s striker on the soccer team not run as hard?

We gotta think, as a collective group, that  the day to day of coaches and players will go on as necessary to compete in games and practices. The players play and the coaches coach.

Who the AD is and why it matters doesn’t even inch into the players and coaches competing right now. At all.

it will affect how things are “run” and the ability to “get better” over the long haul, for sure.
But does anyone think the kids who compete give 2 f’s overall?
nah, this doesn’t matter overall, in the short term.

This move hurts us as fans, and we understand that there are systemic problems, needs that should be addressed, that we can get worse or better real fast in the Admin phase of things….

But damn. We need to slow our role on the overall affect of this news. Sun comes up tomorrow.

  9. I’d like to poll 25 coaches in the power 5, anonymously, and get their take on how these rule changes affect them generally. And specifically how the ever-changing rules are hard or easy to keep up with. It seems every couple or few months there are major changes to recruiting, portal, signing, NIL, etc that they have to try and be compliant with.

that would be an interesting article a real journalist should tackle.

edit:  20 power 5 and 5 non power 5 coaches. The non power 5 coaches are probably even more stuck

  10. so far so fine…I don’t even want to pay attention to it until 2030.
    I’ll be 53 by then.

back story….got into a heated argument on the way to the Mich v N game when Robinson was their QB.  So quite a while ago. We won that game when Robinson got hurt. I think Pelini was the coach.
my dad and brother were on the side of paying players, playoffs, “who cares bowl games” etc…

got 3 more sentences from physical. Stopped for gas in York from Denver and we all cooled off. I maintained college football specifically would never be the same…errrrr ummmm
now they kinda are like…all the NIL, playoff stuff, 4-8-12,, playoff stuff progression. They see it now.

you know what, doesn’t even matter. The 120 yrs of college pageantry is gone and the regional rivalries has been gone and the idea of conferences is gone and the important bowl games are gone.  Everything that kinda sorta mattered is gone.
it’s new and it’s exciting and it’ll move on. But the tradition is gone.  And that stings to me.

whatever comes next just won’t have the same feeling to me. Win or lose. Success or failure. The feeling of doing of we do and the way way we do it is gone.
I hope we win a lot and get to bowls and compete. Hit it just doesn’t feel the same if we don’t beat OU and CU and Iowa,-‘and KState and Wisc. Instead we gotta beat USC and Oregon and and Washington. Just weird and sad

Well, it also got the “best teams playing the other best teams” from different parts of the country that ran different offenses with different schemes and players. The way it is now the game is so homogenous and players move around the country so much the games matter less because they all look the same.
Plus there are 25+ bowl games so it’s not the “best teams”. It is exhibition now, but used to not be.

Never understood the bowls will mean nothing argument. When did they mean anything to begin with? Exhibition games to put on during the holidays when you are home all day with family

  13. I go watch Cherry Creek 3-4 games a year and I love how the game is just played. No one standing around, not a lot of breaks, games are the same clock time but way less in actual time.
What would be really groundbreaking is to have QR codes on screens for ads, 4 minutes extra btwn quarters, 5 min extra halftimes for commercials.  Then you have the obvious injury and called timeouts.
that’s plenty of time to run commercials during the game and real game breaks.

  14. What if Rex Burkhead catches an isolation pass on the edge in 2009 against texass instead of flat out dropping it for a sure TD?

the sequence of events surrounding that game and thereafter is undersold in mid-2000s.
if he catches that pass and scores, which he absolutely should have, things may have been different for several seasons

  15. We cannot erase up a completely historic run of 9 win seasons (when only 11games played), 35+ consecutive bowl games, ranked in top 25  consecutive weeks, top 25/10/5 rankings for records of that achievement, dozens of conference championships, playing for major bowl wins (when there were only 5 major bowls) for 30+ yrs, winning 5 natty’s and legitimately playing for 8 over a 40 yr span.
even from 01-14 we were super competitive.

in my mind only since 2015 were we kinda  dog crap. Lost way too much and weren’t really competitive. But even then, we are something like 6-27 in one loss games. Win just 10 of those one score games to be .500 in close games and we would be on a “radar”.

we’ve had a bad 7-9 yr run but not total dogs#!t either,  up until the last 6-7 yrs over a 60 yr span.
So in 60 yrs we’ve been legitimately bad for less than 10 yrs. That’s f’in awesome. And we are trending up, no mater what the pessimistic say.
I have a good 30yrs of watching N football left in me, and I’d bet we finish my last 30 like I watched the first 30
