  1. Isn't TT a defensive guy? They wanted someone who would come in and keep the offensive staff and continue to do something about defense. I imagine Ruffin is gone since they didn't promote him. :dunno

  2. I really don't see Iowa finishing in the top 10 next year. It took some really crazy games for them to get to a BCS game this year (UNI, Michigan St., Indiana). Yes, they have a lot of guys back, but they also lose almost the entire offensive line, which is the foundation of their team in my opinion. Losing Bulaga to the draft really hurts them.

Yep. See Kansas this past year.

  3. My understanding is the scores don't even have to be on one test, it's your highest in each category across all tests.

    Yep:

14.3.1.3.2 Combined Test Scores. For students using the SAT examination, the highest scores achieved

on the critical reading and mathematics sections of the SAT from two different national testing dates may be

combined in determining whether the student has met the minimum test-score requirements. For students

using the ACT examination, the highest scores achieved on the individual subtests of the ACT from more

than one national testing date or state-administered examination may be combined in determining whether

the student’s sum score has met the minimum test-score requirement.

What we don't know is his actual GPA in the core courses and if he will have taken them all, but as mentioned, they are typically doing the things to get qualified all along in order to remain in the private school. (Specifically, I recall a kid at Prep more than a few years ago who was a beast, but dumb as a box of rocks and still managed to get in.) I guess we'll see what happens.

  4. Here are the relevant sections of the NCAA rules for figuring out "counters" (basically who counts against the 25 and 85 limits)

    15.5.6.3 Initial Counters—Football (Also see Bylaw 15.02.3.1).

15.5.6.3.1 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering in Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A

student-athlete recruited by the awarding institution who enters in the fall term and receives institutional

financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) during the first academic year in residence shall be

    188

an initial counter for that year in football. Therefore, such aid shall not be awarded if the institution has

reached its limit on the number of initial counters prior to the award of institutional financial aid to the

    student-athlete.

15.5.6.3.2 Recruited Student-Athlete Entering after Fall Term, Aided in First Year. [FBS/FCS] A

student-athlete recruited by the awarding institution who enters after the first term of the academic year and

immediately receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree on athletics ability) shall be an initial

counter for either the current academic year (if the institution’s annual limit has not been reached) or the

next academic year. The student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter limit during the

academic year in which the aid was first received.

15.5.6.3.3 Recruited Student-Athlete, Aid Received After First Year. [FBS/FCS] A recruited student-

athlete (including a student-athlete who was not a qualifier) in football who first receives athletically

related financial aid after the student-athlete’s first academic year in residence shall be an initial counter for

that academic year in which the aid is first received, if such aid is received during the fall term. However,

such a student-athlete who first receives athletically related financial aid in the second or third term of an

academic year may be considered an initial counter during the academic year in which aid was first received

or the next academic year. In either case, the student-athlete shall be included in the institution’s total counter

limit during the academic year in which the aid was first received. (Revised: 1/3/06)

    15.5.6.3.4 Nonrecruited Student-Athlete Receiving Institutional Financial Aid. [FBS/FCS] A

student-athlete not recruited by the institution who receives institutional financial aid (based in any degree

on athletics ability) after beginning football practice becomes a counter but need not be counted as an initial

counter until the next academic year if the institution has reached its initial limit for the year in question.

However, the student-athlete shall be considered in the total counter limit for the academic year in which

    the aid was first received.

15.5.6.3.5 Midyear Replacement. [FBS/FCS] A counter who graduates at midyear or who graduates

during the previous academic year (including summer) may be replaced by an initial counter, who shall be

counted against the initial limit for the following academic year, or by a student-athlete who was an initial

counter in a previous academic year and is returning to the institution after time spent on active duty in

the armed services or on an official church mission. In bowl subdivision football, an institution may use the

midyear replacement exception only if it previously has provided financial aid during that academic year to

the maximum number of overall counters (85 total counters). In championship subdivision football, an institution

may use the midyear replacement exception only if it previously has provided financial aid during

that academic year that equals the maximum number of overall equivalencies or overall counters. (Revised:

    4/20/99 effective 8/1/99, 6/8/99, 4/26/01 effective 8/1/01, 8/2/05, 12/15/06, 1/14/08 effective 8/1/08)

15.5.6.3.6 Aid First Awarded After Second Year. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete who has been in residence

at the certifying institution for at least two academic years may receive athletically related financial

aid for the first time without such aid counting as an initial award, provided the aid falls within the overall

grant limitation. (Adopted: 1/11/89, Revised: 1/10/90 effective 8/1/90)

15.5.6.3.7 Recruited Student-Athlete, Varsity Competition. [FBS/FCS] In accordance with Bylaw

15.5.1.2, a recruited student-athlete receiving institutional financial aid certified as having been granted

without regard in any degree to athletics ability becomes an initial counter in the first academic year in

which the student-athlete competes on the varsity level. (See Bylaw 15.5.1.2.2.) (Revised: 10/27/05 effective

    8/1/06)

    15.5.6.3.8 Returning Two-Year Transfer. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete who previously was an initial

counter and who transferred to a two-year college shall not be an initial counter upon return to the original

    institution.

15.5.6.3.9 Delayed Initial Counter Who Does Not Return to School. [FBS/FCS] A student-athlete

who receives countable financial aid but whose status as an initial counter under this bylaw is delayed until

the following academic year shall be counted against the initial limit the following academic year, regardless

of whether the student-athlete reports for participation or attends the institution in that academic year.

  5.

    Eligibility for Dependent Scholarship Program

All regular full-time (1.00 F.T.E.) employees of the University who meet the employment eligibility requirements of the Employee Scholarship Program may transfer up to a total of fifteen (15) credit hours per year (August through July) to their spouse or to any dependent child at tuition equal to the University's resident tuition charge per semester credit hour at the campus of attendance.

That is 5 normal classes (or 4 with some Lab classes) and does not cover room/board, books and fees. In general if both parents work for the university you can expect to pay around 1,000 in fees each year you go to school. Trust me on this, my father is an administrator for the university.

As noted above, however, you have to consider NCAA regulations on this matter as well, not just the university's policy.

As pointed out, NU only gives you 15 credit hours per year which does not include any fees, books, board, etc. which can be given to a spouse or dependent. However, under NCAA rules if the coach has not been with the school for 5 years, that counts as institutional financial aid and "counts" toward the 85 limit. He would also apparently not get all of the extensive benefits (including training table meals) you are allowed as a full scholarship student athlete. But on the plus side: "An institution may provide fruit, nuts and bagels to a student-athlete at any time."

(FYI I plan to move all of this OT discussion to another thread.)

  6. This game went as expected.

Keebler elves doubling as your O and D-Lines may work in the ACC, but not against Midwestern teams with 300lb. Hoss's out there working in the trenches.

Manhandled is the term that best described this game.

:yeah Same as how I felt going into the Rose Bowl. My buddy was sure Oregon was going to kill Ohio State. I told him "you may be right that Ohio State is overrated, but have you seen how bad the Pac 10 has been this year? I wouldn't make any bets that depend on their performance."

Should have seen the same thing coming in this game.

  7. This will not happen again. That was a once in a lifetime moment. Long sustained runs of elite status like us in the 90's, FSU in the 90's, Miami in the 80's and 90's, Minnesota in the 30's, etc. won't happen anymore. There's too much attrition in the coaching ranks (assistants included) and too many good teams. USC didn't even get 7 years before they dropped out of the top 25.

Hunh? Miami had 3 different head coaches in that time span.

  8. If I was a team like the Rams or Chiefs or any other bottom feeder I would trade down if I could.

Well, you can't. At least, it's pretty hard to do. Pretty much no one is going to give up the picks and take the salary hit that #1 pick requires. I'm sure every team would like to pull a Ricky Williams or Herschel Walker type trade (tons of picks for one guy/pick), but the guys dumb enough to do that don't stay in the league very long.

So you may as well pick the once-in-a-generation D tackle when he's available.

  9. fwiw - i was really impressed with army's new look. what did you guys think of those unis?

    43758502.jpg

:yeah the only kind of alternative Unis I'd be interested in. Maybe something for a military appreciation day? :dunno

  10. This one is a bit different. Supposedly Leavitt grabbed the player by the neck and hit him a couple of times.

Part of football. Happens all across the country on fields whether in practice or games 1000's of times a week from high school to college.

Not talking about hitting but grabbing them by their face masks.

Ya Pete, you quoted something completely different than what he was responding to.

    My bad. <_<
