  1. I was reading the comments on the B1G blog after Adam Rittenburg's comments and the Penn State fans were saying how bad Penn State is! It was really funny to read their comments. I really do think we can pull this off! I guess I just believe that we CAN get to the CG. GO BIG RED!!!

  2. Ok...everyone feel better now that you've had your rants, hissy fits or whatever else you want to call it? Ok...let's move on.

Wow...ugly game but hats off to Northwestern. They came ready to play-we did not plain and simple.

So, as I look at our next three games-if we win them and Michigan State loses along the way, we can STILL go to the B1G Championship game. Michigan State hasn't played Iowa or Northwestern yet. They both played pretty well today.

    WE CAN STILL WIN THIS!!!

Ok...go ahead and call me 'Susie Sunshine' or whatever-BUT it's true. Also, if you want a good laugh in the midst of all of this angst, go read the thread 'Pointing Thumbs' or something like that. It's HILARIOUS!!

  3. Oh. My. God. One loss, against a team that has played many other teams extremely close this year, and we're saying we need to re-evaluate our coaches again.

I think some of you need to re-evaluate yourselves. Every single team in the country loses a game it shouldn't one year or the next. Osborne did it, Meyer did it, Spurrier did it, Bowden did it, Paterno did it, Stoops did it and I could keep going all day. I'm not saying Pelini is near the caliber of those coaches yet but you really need to get your mind right if you think these kinds of things don't happen to even the best of coaches. It's just embarrassing coming on here and seeing the type of comments I'm reading. Carl needs to go...Raymond needs to go...whatever.

I'm nowhere near as disappointed in this loss as I have been in others in the past. It was too little to late for us, but we can still have a successful season if we rally the troops.

Please, for the love of everything Husker football, just shut the hell up about this kind of stuff. It makes you look pathetic and I don't care if you disagree with me. There's absolutely nothing you can say that will change my opinion on this - it's pathetic to be calling for these kinds of things when there's absolutely no substantial reason to do it. Everybody was on the bandwagon last week. It's funny how one bad week really separates the true Husker fans from the fair weather ones.

    AMEN!!!!

  4. ROFLOL!! Thank you!! Sanity in this sea of insanity!! I wore my GREY Husker shirt because my red shirt had greasy little spots all over them! I also said that I KNEW we were going to go to the CG! I jinxed us! I'm SO sorry!! It was me!!!!! True-I forgive you because those McRibs are just too darned tough to resist!!

  5. The coach doesnt play the game , the players do . I am for Bo and will continue to support him and his staff and especially these players. We got some shady calls , seemed like NW was holding our D line all day , and we are thin up front on Defense , because of injuries. I am not going to be a fairweather fan , and I will continue to support Coach Pelini and his staff. Go Big Red !

Dont forget the Tom Osborne special is on Big 10 in around 10 minutes ..

    Well said my man.

Players deserve credit for the win, coaches deserve credit for losses. I know it seems weird, but I'm a true believer in it.

That said, Pelini has my full confidence. These players love him and the other coaches love him. We made a lot of changes on defense this year, especially in the coaching realm, and that takes time to gel. We also have a very, very, very young offense. It's not easy to be successful against great teams or poor teams when you're young and inexperienced.

I'm not that disappointed in this loss. It sucks, but I saw a lot of positives from this game today. I think Martinez played like an absolute leader. Found open receivers, made good plays with his feet and was obviously trying to get something going. He doesn't want to lose anymore than we do. He's a good kid and the team is full of them. I love this team and I love the direction we're going. But we set ourselves back this year with coaching changes and the loss of some key players, especially on defense.

I remember reading one time that the fans were after Tom Osborne when he didn't play the way they wanted him to. That was the time he almost took a job with Colorado. Aren't we all glad he didn't? Then there were all the times when he couldn't win 'the big one'. I liked this quote:

"Despite so many years of winning without winning it, Osborne refuses to get caught up in what much of the country believes about his program: that Nebraska plays a weak schedule; that the Cornhuskers choke in the big game; that his record-setting tenure is lacking without a national championship; that the pursuit of a title should be some sort of quest. "People keep wanting me to say I'm heartbroken for not having won the national championship," Osborne says. "But I'm not. Would I like to win one? Sure. But heartbroken? No." There is the temptation to compare his coaching career to his passion for salt water fishing, to equate his life with that fish. Does he live and breathe to win or simply to coach? They are intertwined, of course, since no coach could survive at a place like Nebraska without winning big. But the man who doesn't rant and rave or throw temper tantrums also does not stress over things he cannot control. He loves the competition and refuses to be tormented by his perceived failures."

Bo has won at least 9 games each season he's been here. There are thousands of college football coaches who would LOVE to have that kind of record. I sometimes think that we as fans are simply living in the past. We want every team to be like the 95 team and guess what? We're not and we're probably not going to be. But we can get better. We've shown that already this year. Folks in the B1G like what we have to offer. They like our fans, they enjoy the competition we offer. We're going to be ok. The sky is not falling. The sun will rise in the morning. Time to put this game to bed and move on.

  6. Hey walksalone. You know that I think you are a hoot! My opinions are nothing personal, ok, just thoughts. (If I sound defensive it's not towards you-ok :) I'm just as disappointed as anyone else that we lost but our heads were in Pennsylvania-not in Lincoln. We thought we could sail right through this game so we were simply not prepared.

    1. That our O line, and the offensive playcalling are on life support

    >Yet they were brilliant last week. They're young, our offensive coordinator is still evolving?

    2. The tackling was horrible and the D line looked pourous

    >They weren't executing or consistently playing their positions. We know they CAN tackle because we saw it last week. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink.

    3. Option to the short side of the field is asking for little or no gain'

    >Yep

    4. T-mart throws better rolling out of the pocket

    >What a great game that young man played tonight. He was right on the money! Too bad the rest of the team didn't follow him!

    5. Beck totally disregarded what worked last week, and he's not doing anything to distinguish himself from Watson

    >I respectfully disagree. Last week didn't look anything like Watson would've called. There was creativity, there was spark, it was fun. We KNOW they can do it-again, consistencly is the key. I also think that our boys were more banged up than we thought. Rex shouldn't have played tonight. The kids just looked worn out. Out of focus.

    6. I haven't seen this many missed holding calls in who knows how long

AMEN! My husband commented that he thinks the refs are 'welcoming' Nebraska to the B1G. The refs are letting us know that THIS is how they do it in this league.

This is my humble opinion but I still think we're in this. Michigan State has to lose against Iowa or Northwestern. We saw tonight that Northwestern isn't the 'loser' team that everyone thinks they are. They've found a new little jewel in that second string qb of theirs as well.

Northwestern was ready to play tonight and it showed-we were not.

  7. Martinez obvi. Kid played really well

Yes he did! It's not his fault that the receivers kept dropping the ball or fumbling the ball. We lost because we were more beat up from that Michigan State game than people thought. We lost because we were out coached, out played by a better team. Enough said-let's move on.

  8. Are you kidding me? So we lost. Big Deal. Take a breath and calm down. Good grief! This is exactly the attitude that 'fans' had when Tom Osborne wasn't 'delivering'. He couldn't win the BIG GAME. People were calling for his head too. We KNOW we have the potential-we saw that last week. Now we know how Michigan State felt last week and how Iowa felt getting beat by Minnesota. It happens but fire the coach? Unbelievable. So we only support the coach when he wins. Blah! Threads like this just make me tired. We're not out of this yet. Forget this game and move on.

  9. Go Hogeyes! (I went to college with a bunch of kids from Iowa and I always teased them using this substitute!) What I can't believe is that Minnesota is beating Michigan State 17-14! Love it! AND Ohio State and Indiana are TIED 13-13!!!

Where'd you go to college ladyhawke?

And as far as Minnesota goes... not no more. They gave up a full field drive to Sparty to end the half down 17-21. Their defense is a total

Let's hope Cousins finds a way to give this one away.

I went to Northwest Missouri State. We had a bunch of kids from Iowa and they were mostly Cyclone (Iowa St.) fans which really burned when we had our reunion the year Iowa State beat us! Blah! lol

  10. Go Hogeyes! (I went to college with a bunch of kids from Iowa and I always teased them using this substitute!) What I can't believe is that Minnesota is beating Michigan State 17-14! Love it! AND Ohio State and Indiana are TIED 13-13!!!

  11. I think Bo has completely changed a tradition that we all hold dear, so from that standpoint I dislike it. But on the other hand, look what Bo has done with the defense. Whatever his motivational tactics, they are working. The Blackshirt tradition we used to have wasn't of Bo's creation. Future coaches should not have to abide by old traditions when they have their own ways of working.

What's more important; the tradition itself or what the tradition represents? I don't see any inconsistency with Bo's way of handling the Blackshirts in terms of what they represent, and thus I have absolutely zero problem with it.

I agree. We are still honoring the 'Blackshirt' history by giving them out to the boys who are deserving of the honor. I think Bo made a very strong statement when he took them away initially and basically said, 'Earn them.' That, IMHO, isn't much different than what Charlie did. Again, Charlie McBride himself, said that there isn't a wrong way or a right way to give them out.

  12. Charlie McBride was on 1620 yesterday discussing this and he doesn't have a problem with the way they do it. The defensive philosophy is different now and so many guys rotate in that there are more than just starters involved.

Charlie said that same thing in that article that Dirk wrote. I was against it when I initially posted this but now that I know that Charlie is ok with it-so am I.

  13. I didn't take what Dirk wrote as having a problem with how or how many blackshirts Pelini hands out. The only thing in the article that hints at that is what Carlos Polk said. Like many ex-players recently, Carlos should probably learn to keep his mouth shut. The defense that Pelini runs tends to regularly use more personnel in different packages than when Polk played so Carlos's comments are ill advised. I have no problem with Pelini determining when or how many blackshirts to hand out. My preference would be that the starters (in every package-which may be as many as 19) get them prior to the first game but, last time I checked, I was not the coach and Pelini is. It is his job to administer the blackshirt tradition however he sees fit and to choose how to motivate the players. I am not sure why Dirk felt the need to include Polk's inflammatory opinion. If Dirk has ulterior motives, he sure didn't speak out loudly one way or the other.

Thats why I have no problem with 19. It is a large number but think about how many times we shuffle linebackers and secondary people. A starting linebacker may not even see most of the game when we play teams like Michigan. When Nebraska does its' starting line up for the game they always have 14 or 15 guys because who knows who is going to be needed right off the bat.

I posted on this subject yesterday. At that time I had always been of the opinion that the Blackshirt had to be 'earned' and thought that only the very best players (namely the starters) were awarded them. I had always heard that it was a HUGE deal to receive one. So when I started to hear about the 'controversy' it made me a little sad. I didn't want this tradition to be watered down or lose it's value. Well, my fears were unfounded and Charlie McBride is the one who gave me confidence that Bo is doing just fine where the Blackshirt tradition is concerned and I got that information from the article that was posted here. Charlie McBride said this about the giving of the Blackshirts:

"McBride tried to follow the traditions of coordinators like Van Zandt, Monte Kiffin and Kelly. But every coaching staff is different, McBride said. There's no right or wrong way."

So if a legend like Charlie says there's no right or wrong way then why should Bo be judged for giving out the Blackshirts the way HE wants to give them out?

  14. I think college football is different than it was when Jason played. There tends to be a lot more specialist packages and roles... Dime, Nickel, Peso, 3-4 versus 4-3 depending on the situation, etc.

So, just so I can be clear :) you think that the sheer number of players have increased and therefore there are more opportunities for the Blackshirts to be given out?

  15. *Mods if this topic has already been discussed please delete this post*

I was listening to 1620 the Zone the other day and they were talking about the awarding of the Blackshirts. They had Jason Peters on and they asked him what he thought about it. He said he thought it was awful. It watered down the tradition of the Blackshirts. He said that some of the kids that played really well never saw the Blackshirt until their senior year. He said that he didn't think that the current staff really understood the significance of the Blackshirts.

What do you all think? I tend to agree. It takes away the value of the shirts to give them out like a 'participant award'.

    What's your vote?

  16. Thanks for stopping by Andy. OSU is looking really good this year. I hope you guys stay undefeated. The B1G is da bomb. We have had so many people from the various teams come to this board and welcome us. When it was official this summer it was like a big party. The B1G Network showed a whole bunch of our old games. It was so much fun.

I miss the Big 8 too. I'm originally from Missouri. It was always so much fun just the 8 teams. When we became the Big 12 it was just awful. But I remember telling my husband that it didn't matter because when a former 'Big 8' team played another 'Big 8' team, no matter how bad that other team was, they would just play their hearts out.

If the B1G ever expands I too would love to see us take OSU/OU/MU/KU-can you imagine how great that would be!!! But in the event that doesn't happen, it would be really fun to play you guys before the regular season begins.

Best wishes on the rest of your season.

  17. I like the Big Ten better than the Big 12 and there is no comparison. The Big Ten reminds me of the Big Eight when we used to play there a long time ago. It is fun football and a fun conference.

The Big 12 is going to be gone soon and if we didn't get out we would have been in big trouble. I'm glad we are in the Big Ten. It's better to play Ohio State and Michigan and Wisconsin than anyone else in the Big 12 except for Oklahoma.

I agree. The B1G reminds me of our old Big 8 back in the day. I do miss playing Oklahoma though. My wish is that if the Big 12 breaks up they would come into the B1G. That's probably not going to happen but it would be fun. (Or if we could play them every year before our regular season starts. THAT would be really fun.)
