  1. I don't understand what is so upsetting about all this. UNL is still going to the B10 and is still a great academic institution. Just because someone doesn't compliment me at bedtime on a job well done that day, doesn't mean I'm any less proud of what I accomplished since waking up that morning. Frankly, this is nothing to even bat an eye at. Let graduation rates, academic all-americans, and alumni success speak for itself.

For me, it's been weeks of hearing how excited the B1G is in having NU join the ranks, how great it's going to be to have us in the B1G then this happens. It just stinks.

But as others have pointed out, we're the same institution we were when they invited us. They knew we were having difficulties with our AAU membership so this is not surprising to the powers that be-it's just plain embarrassing. We ARE a great academic institution. It's like my Dad always says: "The sun WILL rise in the morning-everything going to be ok.'

  2. I totally LOVE this person's take on Nebraska getting booted out of the AAU:

    http://bigtwen.blogspot.com/2011/04/no-nus-club.html

"But take heart, Nebraska fans: the AAU is a silly, increasingly irrelevant club. A few hundred academics at a few dozen universities decide which schools meet their necessary criteria (i.e., where would I be willing to teach if I were not already a tenured faculty member at Brown). Its criteria for membership are such that having top scholars on really, really important topics, like Jacques Derrida and the social meaning of boredom, but not things like producing more and safer foodstuffs. It has not admitted a new member in 10 years, because, hey, all the good work is already being done somewhere else, amirite? Besides, no one wants to live in Lincoln, Cornhuskers; it's bad enough I have to teach two lecture classes this semester and one of them meets on Fridays."

This was a good blog entry. GBR!!!

  3. Also, if Dr. Perlman KNEW that there was a danger that NU would get booted out, why wasn't something done about it WAAAYYYY before now?

I doubt there are specific actions that can be taken at the drop of a hat to boost research funding or whatever the specific metrics are.

Here's something to think about: Since 1999 tuition at MIT has quadrupled while it's "only" doubled at UNL. There are arguments that the mad dash to expand university research and funding has come at the expense of undergrads with higher tuition and absentee professors. Pork spending in the federal budget is quite often research grants requested by congressmen for their home district or state, and on that note the only tangible benefit of the AAU is their lobbying arm.

I guess what puzzles me is 1)Why didn't they fully investigate Nebraska's AAU standings before now and 2)When Dr. Perlman was notified 10 years ago, why didn't the university develop an action plan to take care of the areas of weakness? Or did they?

  4.

Gee. Being REALLY upset; lurking other boards for info; fans from other schools being pissed...I don't know who is the weirdest in this equation. With this whole kicked out of the AAU thing everyone needs to abide by the old stand-by: the one who cares least wins.

Let's see....I could say that I think you are the weirdest because you don't care or I could be weirdest because I care too much or we could just put our heads in the sand and pretend it doesn't matter....or.... It does matter...but perhaps only to me.

BUT! Won't it be fun to be able to watch the 'nay-sayers' eat crow if Nebraska wins the B1G championship their first year out? THAT would be sweet.

P.S. I hope you're not offended by what I wrote. I'm just mad and if caring for NU is weird then yeah, I'm a HUGE weirdo lol I just don't like people bad-mouthing our school. I hope this all gets resolved very soon.

  5. As you can see by my many 'replies' this issue has really upset me. I've been reading other message boards from the rest of the teams in the B1G and many of them are really angry. This DOES make the B1G look bad and why did it have to be Nebraska, who was being welcomed into the B1G with open arms, to spoil everything?

However, I did find this thoughtful post on, of all things, an Iowa Hawkeyes message board. There is still hope that NU will be reinstated but it's going to take some time, I'm afraid.

"A bit of history. When Michigan State became a member of the conference it was not a member of the AAU. It did not become an AAU member until 1964 after joining the conference in 1953. Purdue's AAU membership did not begin until 1958 after joining the conference in 1896. Also remember the Big Ten conference was formed before the AAU was formed. I think it is a mistake to think Nebraska would not have been admitted because of its AAU status. Obviously AAU members know what other members' status is.

I expect that Nebraska will begin work to attain membership once again."

Notre Dame is not an AAU member yet the B1G has been courting them for years so there are some huge inconsistencies here. I also learned that UNMC WAS once part of the NU system but they parted ways a long time ago. Does anyone have any history on this?

The whole thing just stinks. I don't know about anyone else but it rather taints our entrance into the B1G 10. Blah.

  6. Blame the Longhorns!!!!!! :corndance

Well, the AAU is headed by Larry R. Faulkner, president emeritus of the University of Texas. Go figure.

I hope that whole fawking state burns to the ground.

Actually all of the B1G members AND the Big 12 members voted FOR Nebraska. This whole thing stinks. I can't figure out why they didn't investigate this prior to inviting Nebraska to the B1G. One day you're in and the next you're booted out? Also, if Dr. Perlman KNEW that there was a danger that NU would get booted out, why wasn't something done about it WAAAYYYY before now?

  7. It should be noted that the Big Ten has pursued Notre Dame for years, and they are not an AAU member. It's not "required" for Big Ten membership, but in Nebraska's case, it helped offset some of the perceived academic gaps between NU and other Big Ten schools. It could, however, still effect how Nebraska operates within the CIC. Nebraska is investing heavily in its new research campus and money from the CIC could go a long way to making that a wise move. Without AAU membership, Nebraska's independent research efforts could take a hit, and it could be perceived as not contributing as much as the other CIC members.

Some interesting points were made in this in-depth article about the vote:

    http://chronicle.com/article/U-of-Nebraska-Lincoln-Is/127353/

    - When the Medical Center research programs are factored in, Nebraska out-ranks 11 other AAU schools.

    - As Harvey stated, ag research is not factored-in heavily because it's funded by the USDA and not the NSF.

    - Another unnamed school was put under review at the same time last fall as NU, but Nebraska was the only school brought before a vote. Did that other school have as many pending research program expansions as NU such as the Innovation campus and CIC membership? I suspect not. That's what Harvey meant by "trajectory" not being fairly factored-in.

Good article. My question is why didn't they look at NU before they invited them into the B1G? This doesn't make sense to me. My other question is why isn't UNMC part of the NU system? What would it take to make them part of the system?

I checked out some of the message boards from the other B1G 10 schools-they're not happy-of course Iowa is gloating about this all over the place. I SO hope we beat the crap outta them this year! Bring on FARMAGGEDON!!!

  8. So, once you're out you're out or can they get back in? This is not a good thing. One of the reasons Missouri was not invited to the B1G was because it was not an AAU school. I'm hoping that University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska Medical Center can join hands and get this resolved. This is NOT a good thing.

lol, really? Maybe check the list? sigh....

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Association_of_American_Universities

Sorry-my bad...I thought I had read somewhere where they were NOT part of the AAU

  9. It's really all BS semantics. If UNMC and others in the University of Nebraska were considered "part" of the UNL system we would be way up at the top of rankings.

However, since many schools like UNMC are not considered part of UNL it knocks them down. If taken as a whole, the "total University of Nebraska" ranking would be really high.

Not really a huge issue unless it hurts us from getting into the CIC. Then that would be huge!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! We could really be in trouble if that is the case. Hopefully the addition to the B1G will allow that to happen even if we aren't in the AAU. FINGERS CROSSED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just read this on espnu. It said that our CIC situation would not be effected. It's so embarrassing though! http://espn.go.com/blog/bigten/post/_/id/26078/nebraska-loses-aau-status

  10. So, once you're out you're out or can they get back in? This is not a good thing.

I'm hoping that University of Nebraska and the University of Nebraska Medical Center can join hands and get this resolved. This is NOT a good thing.

I'm editing this post because Missouri IS a member of the AAU. I'm from Missouri-good to know they are part of the AAU...maybe.

  11. ESPN is reporting that Ohio State could be facing sever sanctions over Tressel's lying to the NCAA. I am beginning to believe that Tressel's job could be in jeopardy and a couple of guys that work with me were talking about who the leading candidate would be and we all agree that Pelini might be at the top of their wish list if they had to fire Tressel. Not trying to stir the pot because it doesn't matter anymore, I was just trying to get a feel if any of you guys were having the same thoughts or not?

I've heard some other sports news folks talking about this situation. They say that Bo would NOT be at the top of the list-probably like 3rd or 4th. No worries mate-not after the wad UNL just gave him!

  12. I do not watch pro football for the very reason they are tightning down on the show boating.

I see no need for a player to do a back flip into the endzone, or dive when no one is around. I am all for celebrating, but some of it is so contrived it is sickening. I do not like the staged dances and slaps that seem to be part of the NFL. Keep college the way it is. Some can get carried away, such as against Locker a couple of years. But normally they have it right.

i have seen some ridiculous calls for very minor end zone celebrations, sad, let the kids be kids.

For some of these kids, that one touchdown may be the only one they make in their college careers. They are in college, for crying out loud! Everyone knows that college is the LAST bastion of irresponsibility! ;) But seriously, making a touchdown for your team IS a cause for celebration! How long does it take to celebrate? 20 seconds! It's not like they're creating a Conga line or anything! Let the kids play!! (Who is really complaining about this anyway? The coaches? The AD's? The fans?) I don't like the 'flips into the end zone' you can sustain a spinal cord/neck injury doing stupid things like that but to turn and salute your fans after a touchdown? I felt so badly for that kid! I think alot of people were just stunned when they called a penalty on that. Stoopid!!

  13. Take Back Gameday - A Nebraska Student Movement

This popped up on Facebook this week. Anyone know whats going on?

I saw this entry when I logged on and a link below it:

Take Back Gameday - A Nebraska Student Movement

Wisconsin can get something like this started and we can't? Yeah, right. Game on, Big Ten. Remember to check back tomorrow morning (4/22) to find out exactly what we're all about! In the meantime, push the like button!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMLmRNt12xI&feature=related

The Wisconsin kids 'jump around' to get the rest of the student body excited and into the game.

It will be interesting to find out what it is.

  14. Mike Marrow

Read that he'll have 3 yrs to play 3, anyone confirm?

Son of Vince Marrow, who is working with TEs on the staff currently.

Does anyone know why he left Alabama then Eastern Michigan?

  15. You shared that Nebraska has eight new conference opponents they have to dissect over the summer. Do you think that the fact that Pelini is from the B1G is an advantage?

I don't see it, personally. As knapplc pointed out, the last time Pelini was part of the Big 10 conference was about two decades ago. The last time Pelini prepared to face a Big 10 team was in 2007 against Ohio State.

Being from Big 10 country won't do much for Pelini. I was born and raised in Nebraska, but tradition and culture are about the only two things that stay consistent over time. The coaches, schemes and products on the field are entirely different than they were from Pelini's Big 10 days. He might know a lot about their tradition and culture, but that won't help him win a football game in my opinion.

Yet knowing about the tradition and culture of a conference is significant IMHO I don't want to beat a dead horse here ;) but look what NOT understanding the culture of Nebraska did to Bill Callahan vs what understanding the culture of Nebraska did for Bo. Bill didn't get it-Bo did. I think that it might, however small, be an advantage to understand the culture and tradition of a conference. I've already heard people saying, 'I'm loving it that we're getting back to 'smashmouth Nebraska football'. That type of football is how we played when we were winning national championships. So, I think that, while it might be small, there IS an advantage in growing up within the Big 10 culture. But like another person wrote, it's not that big of a deal but fun to talk about it. I want to thank you guys for yakking with me and not dismissing my opinion. I appreciate your honesty and the freedom to share my opinion as well. That's one of the things I love about this board :)

  16. You shared that Nebraska has eight new conference opponents they have to dissect over the summer. Do you think that the fact that Pelini is from the B1G is an advantage?

Doubtful, since Bo's last experience with the Big 10 was 20 years ago as a Grad Assistant with Iowa. To put that in perspective, Penn State wasn't even a member when Bo last had regular dealings with the B1G.

I guess I'm looking at it like this: Bo grew up around Big 10 football his whole life. It's like kids that grow up in Nebraska and play for Nebraska. Even though some things might change a little, there is an identity (well, there used to be!) that is Husker football. I'm thinking that Bo knows the identity of these teams. He has an inkling of how they approach things. (And I could be TOTALLY wrong in that assumption!) I remember when they announced that Nebraska was joining the Big 10 people were saying things like, 'Well, this is like 'going home' for the Pelini's.' So, I'm thinking that maybe that 'familiarity' with the Big 10 could be an advantage. I guess I don't see us as going into the Big 10 totally in the dark. (And maybe that's not what Enhancer had in mind when he shared?)

Does this make sense or am I way off base?

  17. Tthe offense we saw last Saturday is not going to be the offense we see this fall.

Nebraska is at a disadvantage going into the B1G. Yes, all the other B1G teams don't get to spend the summer dissecting film on Nebraska's offense, but Nebraska has eight new conference opponents they have to dissect over the summer. Pelini was using the ol' noggin' in that respect.

Second, this offense has been touted as a fast-paced, no-huddle monster that will attack a defense instead of take what the defense gives. Many of the formations I saw Saturday don't exemplify "fast-paced". It's tough to run a no-huddle out of the power i-formation, so I'm sure the pistol and shotgun are going to be about 80% of the plays we run in a football game next year.

Lastly, I'm going to go ahead and say Legate gets fewer than 10 carries this year. I just don't see it being that important in our offense.

You shared that Nebraska has eight new conference opponents they have to dissect over the summer. Do you think that the fact that Pelini is from the B1G is an advantage?

  18. Helmet sticker to:

Rex Burkhead. When I think of Nebraska football 2011 I think Rex. Consistent, quick, reliable. He's just an amazing player. He is the kind of leader this team needs especially considering all of the new freshmen coming up.

  19. I'm probably in the minority, but I think the second rule is stupid. I accept others' opinions about them, but at the same time I don't understand the constant desire or need from our society to make sure everything is politically correct and fair for all audience members. If somebody wants to put a bible verse on their eye-black - let em. If they want to write "I love you, Dad." - let em. It doesn't hurt anybody. I can understand not having derogatory terms or language on eye-black, but people who complain about that kind of stuff really need to find better ways to live their lives.

And I can already see the taunting rule becoming an extremely volatile issue. If a qb throws up a hail marry, the wr catches it at the ten yard line and points into the crowd as he runs into the end zone to win the game, is that taunting? This rule is going to be extremely subjective and is going to be abused about as badly as roughing the quarterback is or helmet to helmet contact rulings.

I'm with you 'Enchance89' Sheesh! Like anyone can even see what's written there unless they do a camera closeup. There are more important things for the NCAA to worry about than that. I think the taunting rule is going to be very difficult to enforce. It's like someone else said, it will be like the head butting fiasco we had this year. That was a huge bunch of crappola.

  20. Chris Fowler?? Really?? Blah! Can't stand him!!! Bob Griese-Another Blah! He hates on Nebraska something fierce although he tries not to show it.

While I respect Lou Holtz as a coach, his speech drives me crazy (I'm a speech pathologist!) I would love to spend time with him to correct that lateral lisp..!!!

Loved Lyle Bremser (sp?) back in the day and loved Kent Pavelka. I hated it when he was let go. He knew all the Nebraska kids..knew where they lived, who they played for in high school. He enriched the NU games so much....As far as National announcers? Keith Jackson is tops. I like those announcers who can pronounce our players' names correctly and love our school. Herbstreit isn't too bad If Brent Mushberger were canned tomorrow I would throw confetti...HUGE BLAH!!!
