  1. Prince also won the Pop Warner award:

All-Big 12 cornerback Prince Amukamara of Nebraska has won the first Pop Warner National College Football Award.

The honor goes to a former Pop Warner football player who shows excellence on the field, in classes and in the community.

  2. What an excellent post! Thank you! We're all a little 'sore' and your post was balm to our wounds. One of my favorite professors was from Northwestern. I'm looking forward to being able to be part of your academic family. Moving to the Big 10 was one smart move!

Thanks again for the perspective! It was much needed :)

  3. I'm behind the team. Just want to see how the team responds now... If we practice in these postseason practices with the fire that we had before the Holiday Bowl last year, then we're in good shape... We've got a long ways to go to becoming a championship team again, and this is when it all begins. This bowl game is the first game of next season.

That's the spirit! (You just sounded so sad before :() I agree with everything you've just said, especially 'This bowl game is the first game of next season." Our first season in the Big 10! Here's to a great brand new beginning!

  4. This is the same question we were all asking after the Callahan fiasco! Look how far we've come!!

How do the Huskers bounces back? The same way it did after Callahan- by leaving all of the other crappoloa behind. By using the off season to make changes that will not just make us a better team but a great team.

What is going to fuel us is the notion that we can be better than we ever were in the Big 12. This is the time to MOVE FORWARD!!

The "We didn't win the Big 12 Championship" pity party needs to be over NOW. WE NEED TO MOVE ON!! :) It's going to be ok!!

Look at what we have now!! I don't know about you but Rex Burkhead is enough inspiration for the whole team. The kid plays tough and has the character/drive the team can get behind.

We also have Dr. Tom Osborne as our AD. He is the captain of our ship. HE will make the changes that need to be made.

I don't know about anyone else but I'm excited about next year!! We have a 0-0 record in the Big 10. When we win our bowl game, which will be against a Big 10 team, we'll be undefeated as we go into our new conference.

Now is the time to change our mentality!! Enough of this 'poor us-we didn't win the Big 12 Conference Championship' We've lost bigger games than that one! (1983 loss in Miami!!). Come on Hercules!! Like you said: "The team has responded unbelievably well to losses under the leadership of Pelini." They will follow him where ever he leads.

It's time for all of us to pull up the old bootstraps and get behind our team. We've always been considered fans that 'travel well' with their team. Now is the time for us to get behind this team! I'm with Nexus. GAME ON!

Moving on from last night's game, these are my thoughts:

How does Nebraska bounce back? This was our season, our Super Bowl. While any bowl game (other than the BCS Title game) following a CCG is sort of anti-climatic, last year the Huskers were fueled by that last second loss to Texas. They were angry and they took it out on Arizona. That :01 fueled enough rage to propel them through the offseason into this year, and to within 3 points of their goal. What is going to fuel us now? We're headed to a minor bowl game and to a new conference, where there is no payback motivation, no urgency to win the conference championship in our last year in the conference.

The team has responded unbelievably well to losses under the leadership of Pelini. But this one is the toughest loss in his 3 years as head coach. Can the players get up off the mat, practice with fire, and meet their potential in a bowl game, where their opponent will likely be overmatched? Do they have the kind of drive that championship teams need during the offseason?

Tom Osborne's mid-90's teams were immensely talented, but they were fueled by that 1994 Orange Bowl loss to FSU like the 2010 version was fueled by :01. Osborne's 94 team had "Unfinished Business" to take care of in the Orange Bowl, and after that his teams were fueled by once in a lifetime leaders like Frazier, Peter, Wistrom... All-Americans that got angry and came down on their backups when the 2nd string and 3rd string didn't play as well as the first string... It was a beautiful thing...

Now we're heading into a new conference with new rivals and no longstanding grudges to be settled, and I think it's obvious we don't have the kind of student leadership that we had in the 90's. We're also looking at a potentially tumultuous offseason with coaching staff changes, although I still think that's rather unlikely.

Does this team have the fire it takes to build a championship team this offseason? Or do we fold a la 2007 Nebraska post-USC? Something inbetween? I'm looking forward to the bowl game for a hint...

  5. The ONLY reason I was sad to leave the big 12 was the thought of not getting to play OU anymore. Such a classic rivalry! I don't know if anyone else noticed but our win/loss stats (before we lost yesterday) were EXACTLY the same!

Please continue to beat Texas year after year. We will be rooting for you to win the Big 12 (-2)championship every year after this!

Hoping to play you in a future bowl game!

    Thanks for the memories-

    -ladyhawke~

I've never posted here but I wanted to say a proper goodbye after tonight's great game. I grew up going hunting in south Nebraska every Thanksgiving and watching the game in various Nebraska towns like Hebron and Superior. Nebraska will ALWAYS be my second favorite team and I hope the Huskers dominate the Big 10. There are thousands of OU fans who feel the same way. Thank you for being the gold standard of CFB programs and for all the amazing memories. Sooner Nation loves you (in the least gay way possible) and will miss you dearly. Go Big Red!!!

  6. Amen! Rex is a difference maker both on and off the field. He's a great young athlete and a young man of character. He'll go far on the football field and in life-class act.

I will second-third-fourth all of that. Should be another exciting year next year.

  7. I was just watching ESPN Gameday. Lee Corso picked us!! The rest OU. However, prior to the talking heads they had a presentation on coaches from Youngstown, Ohio. They showed clips of Bo, Bob & Mike Stoops and other coaches who grew up in Youngstown and went to Cardinal Moody High School. On every clip they showed the coaches yelling and poking/grabbing their boys in an effort to get them to play better. ALL OF THEM!!! It put Bo's passion in a totally different perspective! I wish all of the people, including Taylor Martinez' dad (and others that think Bo is a 'raging maniac) could see how fortunate his son is to have a coach that really cares about their players, really cares about winning. It was a great presentation.

The Talking Heads (except Corso) say that Nebraska is too 'one-sided' to win. They all agreed that it will be a 'cat and mouse' game.

I'm older than dirt here, I BELIEVE that it will be a good, old-fashion BIG 8 smash mouth football game and that the BIG RED will WIN!

    GO BIG RED!!!!

  8. Yeah, they were talking about this on 1620 The Zone-ESPN Radio-Omaha tonight. Kuegler said they had all received the same email. They said that right now while parts of it might be true it's mostly hearsay. No one will know until the bowl game is over. We'll see.

    -ladyhawke~

Couldn't find the rumor mill so I posted it here.

The following is an email I just received:

T-mart transferring at the end of the season. And that

he was actually suspended last game.

    ---

Two or three different sources all report a general version of events as this:

    1. Bo's meltdown against Taylor on Saturday night. All agree it was over a

cell phone. When Taylor was injured, he was taken to the A&M locker room

because that is where the X-Ray facility was. After being X-rayed and cleared,

rather than hurry and return to the team, Taylor left the medical staff to walk

all the way over to NU's locker room, retrieve his cell phone, and have a

conversation with his father. All told, Taylor and his dad waste 10-20

minutes. Bo is pissed on two different levels. One, he needs the kid back in

the game and he's wasting time. Two, Bo has a very explicit rule about cell

phones in the locker room and on the field. Evidently, Taylor has been busted

for this kind of thing in the past.

Taylor comes back out on the field and the medical staff informs Bo of

Taylor's activities. You saw the conversation that ensued on national TV. Not

pleasant. There are several 'lip-reader' interpretations out there. All have

to do with a phone call.

    2. Upon returning to Lincoln, the next day finds Taylor's dad having shown up

on campus. He's pissed. This has happened with Taylor's dad in the past and Bo

pretty much hates dealing with it. They have a meeting with Taylor, Taylor's

dad, and Pelini. Pelini explains that Taylor has violated team rules and will

be suspended for a game. Evidently, Taylor's dad completely loses it, stating

that it is their intention to transfer from NU to somewhere else and that

calling it a 'suspension' will keep teams from wanting his son. Bo says, "Fine,

call it whatever you want, but your son isn't playing on Friday." The meeting

doesn't end well. Rumors swirl like crazy Sunday night that Taylor has quit the

team. Technically, he hasn't, but there is enough truth in there to know that

    something has happened.

    3. The next day, Taylor shows up with a walking boot on his foot to

practice. Him and his dad want him to wear the boot so that people will believe

that he is not playing this week because of his ankle, not because he's

'suspended'. As a 'screw you' to Pelini, however, Taylor wears the boot on the

wrong foot, causing all sorts of confusion and strange questions from the

press. Taylor, in his odd way, thinks this is all some kind of funny joke.

As this little stunt makes its way through the team, former players such as

Phillip Dillard start piping up via Twitter and Facebook, describing their

thoughts on Taylor and his established history of stunts like this, neglect for

team rules, his over-obsessive daddy, etc. Phil calls on the Unity Council to

dismiss Martinez from the team. Speculation is that current players are the

    source of Dillard's anger.

What the 'inside' people are reporting is this: Taylor Martinez is gone after

this season. All agree this is the case. He may not play another game for

Nebraska. Taylor wants to be gone, Taylor's dad wants him gone, and Bo and the

rest of the team want him gone. Everyone within the program, from the coaches

to the players, are tired of his prima donna attitude, helicopter dad, and

general lack of respect for all things Nebraska. The 'suspension' will never be

publicized as such - but that's what it is according to others.

I just don't get it. No matter what we do, or what other teams don't do, we CANNOT get any love from anyone. Forde, Mandel, Herbstreit, James, barely Ubben, pretty much anyone willing to talk about the Huskers except Robert Smith.

Somebody on Forde's chat asked which defense they would like to see against Oregon's offense. TCU or Nebraska. He immediately responded with the whole "TCU is #1 in scoring defense and the #1 defense." At first I thought maybe he would just want to see TCU, a non AQ team just to see, but when he used the ranking, it just pissed me off. Who has TCU played? Nobody. They shut down Utah, but where are they now? Nebraska is the second best(?), and has gotten that by playing teams that are FAR superior to anything TCU has played. Are the opponents factored into the ranking, or is it just what you've done through the season? I would think these guys are smart enough to give us some love and make some exceptions, I guess not.

  10. Hey,

ESPN Big 12 Blogger David Ubben is with us on Alex's snub. Good article about us:

i hope that henery kicks a 60 yard field goal to beat the sooners on saturday. how the f--- can he be second team? i've heard two different national announcers this season refer to him as one of the best placekickers in college football history. i know this was talked about on another thread. i also don't post much. but that is fricking ludicrous.

MOD EDIT - Please use more descriptive thread titles.

  11. I can't believe that Alex Henery only made 2nd team!! BLAH!! Alex Henery NEVER misses (ok maybe twice in his WHOLE career!!!) The kid who is coming to kick for us next year (Nikolas Sade-saw him tonight on Big Red Wrap Up) is going to have some HUGE shoes to fill!

  12. Who beat OU? Missouri? We beat the crap outta them. Texas A & M? We all know that the refs gave them that game when they played us, so why does OU think they can beat us? I think we can beat them. I agree with the writer who said that if Landry passes all night long, our Defense and especially our secondary is going to have a field day. Prince hasn't had any picks this year-right? I would love to see him pick off Landry's passes one right after the other. I would also love to see us shut down their running backs. We've done it before there's no reason why we can't do it again.

I look forward to our win and I actually don't think OU would mind losing to us. It will be such a sweet send off from our favorite rival!

  13. I have been to Lincoln many times. I have watched the likes of Keith Jackson triumphs and watched as Eric Crouch did what Nate Hybl could not. A tradition unlike any other.

I am incredibly sad by Nebraska leaving for the Big10. There is no rivalry in sports quite like OU vs. Nebraska. So many incredible memories of heartbreak and joy but always of admiration.

It's a shame it has to truly come to an end but there is no better way for the Big12/Big8 to dissolve than with the two who defined the league for so many decades.

Best of luck to you Huskers on Saturday but as well in the Big10. Go show them how we play football here.

    Go Big Red

Thanks! I was just writing to a friend of mine who went to OU and remains a Sooner fan to the core. We've had so much fun ribbing each other about the various games over the years. It IS sad that we won't get to play you guys anymore. If there was a school that I would love to take along with us to the Big 10 it would be you guys. Best wishes on the game on Saturday. It will be a Homecoming like no other.

    -ladyhawke~

  14. Ok, please correct me if I'm wrong, but when I watched the BCS standings on tv just awhile ago, they had Missouri ahead of Nebraska! What is up with that? We beat them dang good and we're going to our championship. Why would they be ahead of us? Please tell me I'm wrong!

  15. It's already been established in this thread, they received both the border war trophy, and a big xii north trophy.

I apologize. I didn't see the post about them getting the border war trophy. How sad for our boys that we didn't get the trophy at our game.

    Thanks,

    -ladyhawke~

  16. Frost is not a candidate.

He hasn't even been an Offensive Coordinator yet!

That wasn't the question. The question was WOULD HE BE a valid candidate. :) The issue I have with Watson is the inconsistency. When we play with such passion and power like we've played against Missouri and Oklahoma State and even against Colorado I have to ask Where was that same passion/power when we played Texas or Iowa State or Texas A & M? I just don't get it. Same coach-same kids? What happened? I'm serious-could someone explain to me why we're so inconsistent? Were these just 'off games' for us? Was it just not having our first string quarterback playing? I believed that was it for awhile, but not after what I saw Friday night. So why the inconsistency?

    Thanks,

    -ladyhawke~

P.S. I think that Bo (and Dr. Tom) will make the decision as to whether we need to switch OC's. I posted the question out of curiosity, not because I was trying to start a 'Let's get rid of Watson' thread.

  17. I think it's a crime that he's not a finalist. Here is the way they determine the Groza:

Prior to the start of each college football season, the Lou Groza Award Watch List consisting of 30 players is released. This Watch List is determined based on statistics from the previous season and preseason expectations. Information is received from national media, school sports information directors and other ranking sources. However, all Division I-A kickers are eligible for the coveted award. During the season the Groza Awards committee monitors the success of all kickers on a national level. Weekly, beginning in early September the award recognizes the three outstanding kickers of the week based on the previous week’s play.

Accomplishments are tabulated throughout the season and the Lou Groza Collegiate Place-Kicker Award committee announces its 20 semi-finalists in early-November. From this list, a panel of over 300 experts selects the top three finalists for the award in late November. That same group then selects the national winner.
