  2. Just curious: What qualifications does Turner not fill? Better in what way? I think he would be an excellent HC because not only has he proven he can lead a team but he is also a leader in other ways. Being an HC is more than just being able to coach football. I want someone who is going to work to build character in the boys that he's coaching. I feel that Turner can do that. We've already seen that he can do that. Turner gets my vote. TLS2
  3. I agree. I think that when he came here he thought he could do something very special. We all bought in to it too! We were patient (well most of us) and thought we were on our way. But as time went on, we saw that the WCO is simply not a good fit for our program. I think bringing it here and pouring it on these players without any kind of transition was a mistake. Had he taken what we were playing and slowly introduced the WCO it might've worked but he didn't and now he's having to backpedal. The unfortunate thing, and the reason why this 'He doesn't care' is so silly is because he has a family. They all do. They uprooted their families and came here hoping to make a difference. Are we really so arrogant to think that he doesn't care just because the team isn't winning? I feel sorry for his wife and children. They will have to endure yet another move...yet another uprooting of their family. However, I do think that the noble thing to do would be to resign. That way he could at least leave town having admitted his mistake while allowing our program to press on. Just my .02 worth TLS2
  4. Here's what the LSU gang are saying about Bo Pelini and Nebraska (Their board is called 'Tigerdroppings' what a hoot!) http://www.tigerdroppings.com/rant/message...c.asp?p=5761075 (corrected link-thanks to the poster who correct it later in this thread! I put the corrected link here in case folks read this post first.) TLS2
  5. You shared that you felt Bo Pelini would get us back to the pinacle faster than Turner Gil. Could I ask why you feel that way? Just curious. TSL2
  6. I visited the Buffalo Bulls message board to see what they are thinking with regards to Turner. Take a look...interesting read. http://www.ubfan.com/install2/modules.php?...385&start=0 TLS2
  7. If you would've been a truly 'bad fan' you would've stayed and said all of those things that you couldn't take back. That you left, collected yourself and then came back shows incredible class. THAT is the type of fan that has made the Huskers great. So WELCOME BACK! (But frankly, I'm with the poster who said that what your are really showing is passion for your team. Nothing wrong with that! It's that same passion that has caused changes for the team in the first place. We need to keep that passion alive!) TLS2
  8. Isn't the Husker Pavillion called the Husker 'Nation' Pavillion? I think it sounds kind of neat too but because of who thought of it, it kind of leaves me cold now. I like just plain old Huskers. As for 'The Power of Red'...it's simply clever (or not depending on if you like it or not) marketing. TLS2
  9. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I guess it has been 4 years and yes people do change and grow. Perhaps with TO's support, Bo could be the man. I'm all for a coach with passion as long as he can harness it and not make a fool out of himself. Bo did love the players and that was a good thing. Frankly, I think the new Head Coach will be someone that hasn't even been mentioned yet. But whoever it is I think the decision will be well thought out so that we won't have to go through this kind of crappola again. Thanks all for your input GBR! TLS2 When I talk to players that played for him, they all say Pelini has an incredible ability to motivate. He's a defensive genius, as far as I could tell, and that same game he got one damned penalty he also managed to completely shut down one of the nation's most potent offenses while leaving the offensive playcalling to someone else. Sometimes young coaches overreact, but all great coaches have the motivation factor in common. Pelini is a very special guy. Heaven forbid your FOOTBALL coach is a hardass. I think with the sissy-girl coaching philosophy we have now we forget what it's like to have a fire lit under your butt. That's football. What we forget is how much love Pelini gave his players. Any three and out, there wasn't anyone in the world more excited than Bo. I like seeing coaches hugging players and keeping their motors running. It's all about passion and intelligence.
  10. I guess I'm not convinced he's the man for the job. I remember how he went ballistic at that last bowl game. I think he is a good defensive coordinator but I think someone stepping into this job needs to be not only knowlegable but also polished. For my part, I think someone like Turner Gill, who even though he is not as experienced, has a little more finesse than Bo. I just don't want to be embarrassed again by a coach who can't control his temper, then have to hear about it for weeks on end after the game. Any thoughts? TLS2
  11. Whether IBR is correct or not I resent anyone insinuating that Tom Osborne could be a liar. If they believe that then they don't know him at all. I'll treat these rumors like I treat Nebraska weathermen: I'll believe it when I see it. TLS
  12. Hello Husker X, I found your post interesting and wanted to share perhaps a different point of view. Step 1: Realize where we are At this point I think everyone needs to see the true state of affairs. We are a sinking ship with no hope for the future. *For me this felt like a very 'defeatist' attitude. We DO have hope for the future. The fact that so many people want to see change is evidence of this hope. Our recruits, provided there are any left by the end of the season, are ultimately useless because of the coaching. All the talent in the world means nothing when there is no TEAM to put them in. *I appreciated what Matt Davison said last night as the game came to a close: "Those kids have not bought into this system (which personally I think is so darn hard to understand!! Couldn't Billy C and CO. developed the WCO in smaller bites instead of throwing the whole pie at the kids and making them choke it down???) "They are simply going through the motions. They are not playing together." It's true! I agree a staffing change is in order. Callahan has no wins of value, no motivational prowess, and his scheme is pathetic. The WCO has washed out. Let's face that, right here, right now. It just doesn't work. If we can't score a TD against the 95th ranked defense in the nation, then what do we expect against the likes of Oklahoma or LSU? Moreover we have seen no improvement in four years, the total demolition of our many proud traditions, and a usurping of our Nebraska way (which does exist and always has). *Callahan does have wins of value. We beat Michigan. We also won the Big 12 North last year. That had not happened the years before. As I stated before, I think his scheme is difficult. Why can't he simplify it so that the quarterback doesn't have to come over to him and burn up time after each play? Do you really believe that Missouri looked like a 95th ranked defensive team? I sure didn't. Numbers don't always tell the entire story. It's what actually goes on during the game that really counts. Our offense has been touted as being really good too but I didn't see it last night. There HAS been improvement in four years. Remember how bad our kicking team used to be? I do. Remember how we couldn't run the ball back after a kick off? We're getting much better yardage now. I dont think we've seen the kind of improvement that we as fans would like to see. We want our 'glory teams' back. Bottom line: this is not the staff for us. Maybe they'd have more success in the pros, I don't know and nor do I really care. I want what is best for Nebraska, not Bill Callahan or his unbendable philosophy. I was an ardent Callahan supporter, but this is it for me. I can't support him because I have no reason to believe he can turn this around, not even with a good D coordinator. Our players are complacent, void of emotion, and quitters. *I wonder how many folks felt the same way when Dr. Tom first started? I remember reading where he felt that things at NU were so bad he was ready to go look for a job at Colorado. What a sad state of affairs that would've been had he went! How will we feel if next year, our team wins all of their games and comes out shining? This is where we are. *This is where you see us to be. I think we have areas of concern and they need to be addressed but like another poster has shared, what is the answer? Who would you replace the present company with? Cries of 'Anyone is better than what we have now.' are just emotional rabble in my opinion. We need experienced coaches for our boys. I wish we would've been able to keep some of the men who have left: Turner, Ron Brown, John Blake and others who not only knew football but cared about the character of our boys as well. I REALLY miss that aspect of our team. Step 2: Options for the future Now we need to open the discussion to legitimate replacements, pros and cons. Who would be right for the job? Who would understand our traditions and remember them from the first day he steps foot in his office? Personally I agree with Tony Soprano: "You STAY within the family." We are Nebraska; it's us against the world. We'll run the damn option no matter how old it is, no matter how 'dead' it is, and watch what happens against those highbrow Os like the 95 Florida team. *It's a different age now. The option is not going to save us. The reason many kids have come to Nebraska is because we have an NFL experienced coach and they want to learn that type of playing. I do, however, think that a mixture of schemes would make more sense. Can the option and WCO co-exist? (I'm a novice when it comes to that sort of thing.) I would like to see someone who understands the heart of the Husker come in to coach us but I'm not sure who that would be. However, it does need to be someone with exerience. My personal preference is a return to a power running game, phased in with an emphasis on passing until we can recruit the right guys. Blain Gabbert could maybe be an option QB, I don't really know. He's big and fast from what I hear, and he can throw. He might be the answer, he might not. I would rather lose running the option than lose running the WCO. At least then we'd LOOK like a Nebraska team. *I can't address this because I don't know the ins and outs of football that well. Maybe my question would be why can't you have running and passing both? Why does it have to be one or the other? And is there a WCDefense? I would like to see a return of our old 'smash mouth' defense. Step 3: Action All this talk means nothing unless we are willing to do the hardest thing imaginable. I'm talking about not going to games or paying for merchandise. *Here I disagree with you. This will only hurt our boys and our program. (Read my post on DON'T BOYCOTT MEMORIAL STADIUM) I would rather see us place our efforts in contacting the powers that be. I do think that changes are in the air already. Have you noticed that our assistant Athletic Director has left? He was a HUGE fundraiser. The 'money' has noticed that he is leaving and I don't think that's going to sit well with them. If you really want to make a change, find out how NU is funded. Contact those that fund the program with your concerns. THAT will get more change than hurting our boys and tearing down yet another Husker tradition. Please reconsider this. Our sold out attendance is our last vestige. I want to keep it. Pederson and Callahan have recently been given extensions, and that was a big, big mistake. But money is louder than these setbacks. I know it seems like you're turning on the Huskers, but you're not. You're simply doing what has to be done in order to see the program salvaged from the wreckage. Vote with your feet, show that you do not support players who quit, or coaches who are incompetent. *I vehemently disagree. What kind of fan 'quits' on their team when the going gets tough? Not a true fan. Not in my book. Hasn't this team been through enough? Haven't we been trampled down enough? No way am I going to quit on these boys. You can do what you want but I think what you are considering will make you no better than the people you are trying to bring down. Again, if you want to see change GO TO THE PEOPLE WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE. Find out where the money is coming from and go after those folks. They want exactly what you want. They will listen. They may even be making changes as we speak. For me boycotting is tantamout to throwing a temper tantrum just because we got our tails kicked by Missouri. Hit the advertisers. Call them if you want to. Once the money starts to dry up, Pederson will be hurled out faster than Rush Limbaugh at an ACLU ralley. The greatest message is silence. It's either that or booing the team from the minute they step on the field until the minute they step off. Boo the coaches, especially, and Pederson. I don't know what else will get the message across. But I do know that sitting complacently will do absolutely nothing. These things will not work themselves out. Pederson has got to go, today if possible. Money is all that will make that happen. *PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS. The greatest message is support. I can tell you as an educator that when I see teachers yelling at their students or belittling them in public it does NOT make them perform better. But when i see teachers encouraging their students and praising the things they DO do right it makes all the difference in the world. We may be down but we are certainly not out. I respect your opinion but I do not share it. I hope that you will take this post in the spirit that it was written. I'm angry too. I want to see change too but the vehicle for change in my humble opinion is support...encouragement...constructive ideas NOT destructive ideas. TLS2
  13. I have a different point of view regarding the game last night. I was just as upset as the next Husker fan but I saw a slight 'silver lining' which led me to post here AGAINST boycotting of any kind. I'm from Missouri but I've lived here in Nebraska longer than I've lived in Mizzou and my heart beats Husker Red and I bleed Husker Red. However, I have to say I was proud of the Tigers yesterday. Not ony was the team ready to play and wanted to win but the entire school was ready. They had been waiting for this day all year. WHAT AN INCREDIBLE COMPLIMENT TO THE HUSKERS!!! They thought enough of our team, considered us enough of a challenge to go all out to prepare for that game. I think that's inspiring! So I've decided, and I hope many others will join me, in SUPPORTING the boys on the field as much as we can. I SO miss the heart of the Huskers. THAT is what is missing. Boycotting them by ruining yet another cherished tradition makes us no better than the folks who have driven this program into the ground (or so it seems...it's difficult to be rational when one is filled with so much anger...) I agree with what Matt Davison said last night. He said, 'Those boys have not bought into this system. They are not playing together, they are simply going through the motions.' He's right! The only part of the Heart of Nebraska that is left is our fans. If we go then Big Red will truly be dead. So for those of you who are fans through wins, through loses, through the dry times, through the great times...PLEASE HANG IN THERE! Don't hurt those boys who are just as discouraged as you are and even more so. You don't have to go to school at UNL and hear all of the ugly things said about the team you play on everyday. If you really want to make a difference then address your concerns to those who are in power to make changes. Write letters to Steve Pederson, to Bill C et al. THAT will make more of an impact than destroying yet another thing that makes Nebraska Football great. I want to continue to be known as the 'greatest fans on earth'. If we boycott and destroy that last vestige of our proud tradition, then we are no better than the ones we're trying to get through to. I'll slip off my soapbox now. GO BIG RED!! We will rise above the ashes. It might not be this year...it might not be for a very long time but we WILL be back. TLS2
  14. I'm new to this board but old in watching Husker football. Granted, I think that many of us expected the Huskers to at least be competitive but I can remember when the Huskers were ranked #1 and would go into a 14th ranked 'house' and beat the crap outta anyone there. Why did we expect that USC would be any different? While I love our passion I think it might've been a tad misplaced. This IS the #1 team in the nation. I'm sure if you go back in their history, you would find dry times as well. Let them have their 5 minutes of fame. They are a good team. Having said that, I did miss the Blackshirts. Where were they? Because when I looked at where their position should've been playing, they weren't there? I'm for giving these new recruits a crack at the job. Why keep them on the sidelines when they are itching to play? They couldn't have done any worse than what I saw on Saturday night. I'm also concerned that there was an absence of adjustments made at halftime. They just kept doing the same 'not working' thing? Anyway, I'm not down either. I think that if the coaching staff is smart they will pick that USC game apart and look at every aspect of it. If they can improve on even half of the mistakes we made Saturday night, this Husker team could be looking at a 12-1 record this year. Love this team! Always have ....always will TLS2 P.S. I also think they should have a better way to take care of onfield injuries. If a player cannot stand on their own, get the stretcher out there and get them off the field. It will be better for the injured player and for the game. I felt that having that cool down time really hurt Nebraska. (I also wondered what they do during that time? Are they with the coach going over what they will do next? Or are they just standing around? Anyone know? I hate it when kids get hurt in that game. I know everyone had that boy that got hurt in the NFL on their mind when the first kid went down. Yeah, I'm older than dirt! All of those kids are just boys to me, especially the young college kids. I think we sometimes forget that.)
