  1. 4-3 or 3-4 doesn't matter. Both can work, if you have the players. Both can fail, if you don't have the players.

Last year didn't work because we were missing some players. Bo's defense also wasn't very good towards the end of his tenure, because he was missing some players.

    Michigan will get clobbered

I would like to see Indiana beat Tenn.

I'm thinking Minni loses to Auburn -

The OSU / Clemson game should be very interesting. If OSU's D rises up, then I think they can win.  Clemson is in a weak conference and I'd like to see an end to their 28 game streak.

PSU / Memphis will be interesting but I think PSU will prevail.

I haven't been impressed wt USC so I think Iowa will prevail even though they beat my favorite 5-7 team by a last second FG.

Wake Forest beating MSU - could happen and it wouldn't be a surprise.

Not sure about this. Alabama is used to playing for championships. They don't want to be in a bowl game that means nothing. I imagine a lot of their starters won't even be playing.

Defense is the most fun side of football to watch and anyone who doesn't agree is a bad person.

Good defense. Good defense is fun to watch.

I think back to the 2009 Big 12 Championship, or even the 2009 season, and wonder what would have happened if we had even a decent offense. I remember watching games with friends, and we dreaded when the offense was on the field. We always joked Watson was keeping things vanilla to unleash all the good plays at the end of the year. Then they scored 33 or whatever it was against Arizona. Good times

Man, they both are to blame.  An special teams....It's impossible to lay the blame on one or the other.....Our D "improved", but as @4skers89 mentioned, look at the offenses of those we beat......Not exactly world beaters.  Our O was just as bad with an almost complete inability to score in the red zone......

If we want to hang this on Chin, gotta hang it on Frost for the same reason....Both (all phases) need too drastically improve.  The schedule next year is rough.  2021 is brutal.....And next year, the D will have a lot of new phases.....

Yep. Both. The answer is both. And special teams. I would add to my post, but you did a good job summarizing my thoughts. Hopefully the drastic improvement happens

Will he come after the QB and give multiple looks? Attack the A and B gaps? Come off the corners? Make the Oline and Qb guess who is coming. If he could tap into some aggressiveness, NU would benefit imo.

I feel like when he was at UCF, he was more aggressive, but I could be wrong

    If Chinander's defense can

    • start generating a pass rush with his front four alone
    • shore up linebacker play and defensive alignment issues in the front 7
    • have the man defenders become lockdown in man assignments
    • play zone assignment football better
    • Generate more takeaways

Then he may be in the ball park.  But that "get off the field on 3rd down" issue has to be fixed, badly.

Having a couple pass rushers would help bullet points three and five

I think you guys are creating a narrative here.  Let me explain.

Randy Gregory was part of the 2014 defense...and our defense this year was very close in sacks and TFLs to the 2014 defense...and in 2014 they played an extra game (13).

Keep in mind, this years defense had more sacks and TFLs than any since 2014.

    2019 Sacks:  27

    2014 Sacks:  29

In fact, we only had 4 less sacks than the often lauded last good defense (2010 defense which had 2 more games playing 14).

We had 73 tackles for loss (TFLs)...also the most since 2014 when they had 80...once again, they had an extra game so we're pretty close.

So, as you can see, you guys are creating a narrative.  We have guys getting in for sacks and TFLs...just not how you would like them to (that is one or two guys who are major threats).

Sacks are only one measure of getting after the QB. I watched the games. It's not a narrative to say that many of the QBs we faced had plenty of time in the pocket, waiting for receivers to get open.

27 sacks is decent, but if that's all, or close to all the times you pressured a QB, that's not very good.

I still wish they would contrast this to previous eras. Or other schools.

This information in a vacuum doesn't really tell us much. It's odd they keep running this story. I guess we're going to be getting this kind of content from the OWH from now on?

Anything to get clicks/reads. That's kind of how the media is now.

  9. Texas has always baffled me. I have seen good coaches go there, and get fired from there. They seem to constantly under perform, which is weird considering they have great athletes on the team. I would take many of their players for Nebraska. I would assume it has something to do with the administration?

So rolling left for a QB to pass is considered a trick play?  Okay!!!

I think it was definitely deceptive. I didn't think McCaffrey was coming in the game to throw the ball, considering most of his previous plays were runs. Iowa obviously thought the same thing, because JD was wide open

Well he only had 3 incompletions but those 3 must have been really bad apparently.

Completions don't necessarily mean good passes. I guess my main point was that we have seen a lot of McCaffrey running. We have seen very little of his passing. I'm not really sold on his passing ability yet given the small sample size.

Moos hired the man that the vast majority of this fan base wanted. The same guy that most people considered to be the #1 available college coaching candidate in 2017.

He also hired one of the top 3 available college bball coaches last year and is spearheading a massive facilities upgrade.

All things considered, I don't think Moos has much to worry about even if Frost doesn't work out.

Agreed. I'm not sure why we would consider firing Moos. He has done nothing but hire what was seen at the time as the best available.

There's no question more games should have been won.  The one possession losses were frustrating to fans and to Frost.

I think that's why there's some confidence that a few things......special teams improvement, interior OL improvement and pass rush to name a few......will help not only win those games, but increase margin of victory.

Honestly, having a kicker that can kick it out of the endzone on kickoffs would do wonders. The FG kicker looked good, especially considering he was a soccer player before. I don't think he has missed anything yet. Is he back again next year?

The interior of the line improved during the year. Especially Jurgens. I know Jaimes is back, but I was never a huge fan of his, but he did okay against a really good pass rusher. Farniok should slide inside, so hopefully Benhart can step up at RT. One thing I have noticed with this staff is that they do go after skill positions, but the lines are not being neglected in the process.

I honestly have no idea what to expect from the defense next year. We are losing a good chunk of production from that group on all three levels.

Just to add to the above now that I'm home, QBR is based on passing stats, so I'm not sure why people are talking about 30 plays unless I'm missing something. McCaffrey has 12 passes.

Still dunno how you'd make a confidence interval on QBR for 1 QB, unless you did it by game and then the sample size for McCaffrey would be 3, but if we look at completion % using a Wilson interval, we can be 95% confident McCaffrey would complete between 46.8% and 91.1% of his passes. The ginormous margin of error is due to the tiny sample size.

Now if the sample size was 52 instead of 12, and he completed 39 of 52 (still 75%) passes, we could be 95% confident he'd complete between 61.8% and 84.8% of his passes.

Yeah, it's hard to tell how McCaffrey is at passing. He's had some real bad passes, so he will need to work on that in the off season. He's definitely a great option QB.

I am still interested to know whether Martinez is injured. He hasn't looked right running or passing the ball for a while now. The good news is that the QB position has some depth now. I just hope whoever gets beat in the spring/fall for the number one spot sticks around. I can't remember the last season Nebraska has made it through the season without the starting QB getting injured.

Frost's support goes way, way deeper than Bill Moos.

Moos is actually a newbie to the list of "Who's Who?" that supports Frost.

That list includes donors and influencers that Osborne has literally known for decades.

Frost is safe.  Very, very safe.

I don't know you, so I don't know if you have inside information. I personally do not know or talk to any of the major donors, but this makes sense to me, and I think he should have more time. A lot more time. An additional five years, minimum. I'm tired of the coaching carousel. I'm willing to give him and his chosen staff time.

That being said, it doesn't mean I have to be happy with the results on the field. Nebraska should have won two to four more games this year, but couldn't get it done.
