  1. is not coming to Nebraska, period! Butch has an iron tight contract at UNC, and if he was to leave UNC it would be for Arkansas where he graduated. This may be a bad year to be looking for a head coach with these possible openings to compete with: A. Michigan-More than likely this is it for Lloyd as he will retire from coaching and take an administrative position. Wolves will likely targer Les Miles, as he is a Mich Grad and will be popular among the boosters. If Miles leaves LSU it will start a dominio effect. B. UCLA-Barring a miracle run Dorrell is gone! Bruins need to make a splash with their next hire to compete with USC in L.A. Names such as Chris Peterson, Glen Mason, and Paul Johnson are all being tossed around. I think they will aim higher and go for a bigger name, as they have the resources to outbid anyone. C. A&M-Franchione is toast, period! Tubberville is on their radar, but if he turns them down, then the Aggies will surely be looking at many of the same prospects as Nebraska. D. ND-While it is still an outside chance that they do not bring Charlie back, but if they buy him out then the coaching pool will surely be squeezed. E. Baylor-Morris is gone according to sources inside the Athletic Department. More than likely, they will first pursue Mike Singletary before looking at anyone else. F. Arkansas-50/50 chance that Nutt is gone, many inside the program feel there needs to be a cleaning of the house. If he is fired then Butch Davis would be their top target. G. Cuse-Robinson will be canned, as the fan base and administration feel the school is a sleeping giant. I would not be surprised if they are big player in the coaching market with the resurgence of the Big East. H. Ole Miss-Tough place to win, but it's still in the revered SEC. I. Washington State-The expectations in Pullman are not being met so Doba will more than likely be gone. Other Openings (potential) J. SMU-Open K. Colorado St L. Utah State M. Memphis N. Marshall Keep an eye on (for potantial openings) O. GT- Alot of bad blood exists between alums and Chan. P. Zona-Stoops needs to win out Q. Iowa-Kirk is now willing to listen to NFL overtures. So, as you can see, there is going to quite alot of competition for head coaches this off season. Huskers may be better off pursuing a rising coordinator such as: Venables, Mullen, Jimbo Fisher, or Muschamp. They could also look at rising coaches such as Leavitt, or Brian Kelly, but you have to ask why would Leavitt leave?
  2. add U.C.L.A. as a potential landing spot for Johnson, as they are interested in Johnson, and the guy at boise.
  3. If the huskers want Johnson from Navy then they better move quickly. Rumour has it that SMU will go all out to sign Johnson. Alumni at SMU are willing to kick in $$ to bring a big name coach into the program.
  4. I was just wondering because of the new contract B.C. was awarded with. I was wondering if that will have any bearing on the ability of the Huskers to go after the cream of the crop?
  5. Scratching my head, why was this moved? Im not starting a rumor, but just asking if this scenerio was possible.
  6. That B.C. is back next year as he head coach? Could a scenerio such as, B.C. getting rid of Cosgrove, and a few others, and replaces them with former Husker players, will he survive?
  7. Yeah I know the breaks were needed was in a hurry for lunch
  8. Outside of Navy, does any other legit (not counting Sunbelt League teams) actually still run the traditional option offense? I believe that here in Ohio that even Solich has strayed from the option offense used at nebraska under Coach Osborne, as Solich's Bobcats actually throw for nearly 250 per game adn rush for only around 140 per game. I am under the belief that it would be the wrong move for Nebraska to revert back to the an offense based solely on the option, and I feel this way because the players currently in place are not suited to the option offense, and I do not believe you win consistently in todays college atmosphere running the option. I feel that the West Coast Offense currently installed by Cally is too complicated for the college game, and the WC offense under Cally lacks the ability to control the game. I am hoping that Nebraska hires a coach whom is able to incorporate facets of the option for the power game, but is also able to spread the field and utilize a passing game, sort of a hybrid between the option and the spread offense if possible. In my opinion, the defense right now is a greater concern than the offense, and watching the games on satelite back here in Ohio, I wonder has anyone taught out defenders the basics of wrapping up when tackling or leverage? Thus I beleive that if we look for a new head coach, we should first and foremost on someone whom can install a defense that harkens back to the days of the blackshirts, and the offense will come. Although, this guy will never get any consideration as HC, but Larry Kehres of Mount Union has created a DYNASTY in DIV 3 and is a huge believer in the Osborne school of football.
  9. That Osborne could land Rich Rodriguez from WVU, as the ent Huskers coach? Dr. Tom indicated that he likes the offense that Urban Meyer runs, butthere is no chance Urban leaves UF, but Rodriguez runs basically the same offense.

    Odds

Brian Kelly should be added to the list as 75-1, as he would be a nice pick up, but he has a decent size buyout from UC.

Courtesy of coaches on the hot seat .com 1. Paul Johnson - 10-1: One of the best coaches in the game and a guy that has proved that he can win at every level and can run any offense that fits the players he is presented with. He had a passing attack as an offensive coordinator at Hawaii, he won championships at Georgia Southern, and he has made Navy a competitive football program, which is next to impossible with the type of players he has to recruit to Annapolis. Johnson would more than likely put in an option running attack in Lincoln, and he would reestablish the Nebraska identity as a smash-mouth football program. Johnson is one of the coaches that the other Big 12 coaches would hate to see in Lincoln. 2. Jim Grobe - 15-1: Probably should have been hired the last time Nebraska was looking for a head coach, and in the interim 4 years he has proved his worth and ability even more. What he has done at Wake Forest is next to incredible, and like Johnson this guy can coach the game of football. He is a good recruiter and his personality fits the Nebraska people to a tee. Understated, modest, but will also field a team that will take no quarter from anyone. Grobe is another one of those coaches that other coaches in the Big 12 would not like to see in Lincoln. 3. Bo Pelini - 20-1: A former Nebraska assistant that has proved he knows how to coach defense at the highest level of the game. The thing with Pelini is if he can be an effective head coach, and there is only one way to find that out, and the question is if Nebraska would be willing to take a chance on a guy that has never sat in Hot Seat. Pelini understands well the expectations at a place like Nebraska, and he would embrace the Husker fan base which would be a big change from the current coaching staff. Can Nebraska afford to take a chance on Pelini? Tom Osborne was an assistant on the Husker staff when he was the made head coach at Nebraska. Enough said. 4. Bronco Mendenhall - 40-1: One of the bright young lights in the coaching business, his personality would fit in well on the plains of Nebraska. Mendenhall has done a good job of turning the BYU program around, and he will certainly be someone that will be considered for big-time jobs in the near future. Bronco would embrace the opportunity coach at a place like Nebraska, and no doubt he would put a winning team on the field week in and week out. This would be an outside of the box hire, but a guy that would win big in Lincoln. 5. Joe Glenn - 50-1: One of the top coaches in the game, Glenn has gotten caught up in the difficulty of coaching at a place like Wyoming. Glenn won one I-AA National Championship at Montana and was a runner-up in another. His approach to the game mirrors Coach Osborne's in many ways, and he was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. If Glenn had taken another job instead of Wyoming, at a place where the opportunity to win games is greater, he would be on the top of Nebraska wish list right now. Glenn would fit well at Nebraska, and he would win big. 6. Turner Gill - 75-1: A legendary QB for the Cornhuskers, Turner Gill understands the Nebraska football program inside out, and no doubt he will get an interview from Tom Osborne. Coach Gill seems to have the Buffalo program turning around, and if he can keep that program moving up, he will be up for a number of jobs in the coming years. Hiring Gill would be a big chance for Nebraska, because there would be tremendous pressure on him to restore the program pretty quickly, and the people making this decision need to decide if this is a position for a guy that has never been a head coach at his level before. Gill would be an innovative and trail-blazing hire by Nebraska, and he will certainly be a serious candidate for the job. The real problem for Nebraska is that there is not an obvious perfect hire for the Cornhuskers. The decision on the new coach must be driven by the idea that hiring someone that fits in well in Nebraska is the most important thing, once basic coaching competency is established. Bill Callahan was just a terrible hire for the Cornhuskers, and we have no doubt that Coach Osborne will be looking to bring someone to Lincoln that has all of the following characteristics: 1. Integrity beyond reproach 2. Understands the demands of coaching at place like Nebraska 3. Wants to stay at Nebraska for a long time and make this his last job 4. Is committed to reestablishing Nebraska's football identity as a hard-working, over-achieving, championship goal-setting, and winning football program 5. Fits in with the fans of the Nebraska football program. Since a few of us here at Coaches Hot Seat have had the opportunity to spend some time in Lincoln and Omaha, Nebraska over the years, we would like to say a few things about the Nebraska fans and people of that state. They are the truest of the true, the steadiest you will ever find, and when you get right down to it, the people of Nebraska are some of the best you will meet anywhere. It says a lot about just what kind of men Pederson and Callahan really are, to have the Cornhusker fans turn against them so vehemently. The Nebraska job is a terrific opportunity for some coach out there, and for that coach that is lucky enough to get that job, if he embraces all that Nebraska is he will come to realize he has got one of the best jobs in the land. Memo to Coach Osborne: Hire a winner! (We have no doubt you will.)
  12. Petrino is a college coach first and foremost, as he is one of those guys that will end up back in the college game like Spurrier and Carroll.
  13. Anyone think that Nebraska could possibly get Bobby Petrino to take over next season? The guy got into a mess in Atlanta with a very bleak future ahead for the franchise. I think he would jump at the chance to get out of there before his career takes a hit, as the Falcons are in bad shape.
  14. Junior, Just for your info, I don't start threads just to get people to chat. In reality this was a story on a few news outlets that more than likely picked up steam when NDST beat Minnesota. I couldn't recall Bohl, but now that my memory was refreshed I do recall his terrible defenses. As I stated, I hope the Huskers hire Bo, Brian Kelly, or Major Applewhite to lead the team next year.
