  1. I will agree, as one looks at the coaching landscape in D1 college football, white priviledge is certainly observed. White head coaches, white coordinators. Sure there are black head coaches and coordinators, but they are the exception rather than the rule. Can it be that white men just happen to be naturally better coaches than black men? No. It boils down to a question of opportunity. To say, however, that Gill will not be named head coach simply because he is black, is going a bit too far. First of all, Tom Osborne is a man of great integrity. I cannot see him weighing black versus white to make his final decision. Second, there are legitimate arguments for both Pelini and Gill. One can justify the choice of either with legitimate and rational arguments. If Gill were a white man, he wouldn't be any more of a slam-dunk choice than he is now. He may be passed over for Pelini as he may be now. A decision for Pelini is not a decision to keep black men out of the Nebraska head coaching position. It is not a slap in the face of Turner Gill. It is a difficult decision made by a man of great integrity.
  2. Redtildead, TrumanBD, junior4949 Unfortunately, you all missed my point. Perhaps I should have explained more thoroughly. I was being a bit sarcastic... To imply (as Redtildead was in his original post) that Gill supporters only want him as the next head coach because he was a legendary quarterback is absolutely ridiculous. This was my point. MAC Coach of the Year may not be a huge deal, but it IS one of many rational reasons one might support Gill for the position. Not all Gill supporters are living in the past. Redtildead's point is completely unfounded.
  3. Not going to argue your point about taking our chances with a coach, but the bottom line here IMO, is no matter WHO Osborne hires, he, the Athletic Dept, we as fans and the university are taking our chances with the next coach. Doesn't matter what his resume looks like; he's still a risk. Agreed...unfortunately coach searches aren't an exact science. I does seem as though Pelini might come with higher risk than others. High risk-high reward. Could be the choice of the decade...could be a huge bust. I'm not sure high stakes is the way to go. I think I'm am personally comfortable with a lower risk situation. Low risk can still equal high reward...
  4. So the "he played for Nebraska in '83" argument didn't work...how about the "he was named MAC Coach of the Year" argument?
  5. I disagree completely. Nebraska can't afford anther four year "trial run" on a coach. Are you hearing yourself? Give him a chance?? If it doesn't work out we'll move on?!?! The purpose of the search is to discern which person is THE right guy for the job. If the best we can do is find a guy who MIGHT be a good head coach, then we have problems. How can you make such a luke warm statement about someone and then say that he should be the head coach? The questions that surround Pelini are, in my opinion, all the information I need. If we give him a chance, his first chance, at being head coach and it doesn't work out, then we will be be looking at nearly a decade of bad football in Lincoln. Also, to not hire Turner Gill because of his legacy makes absolutely no sense. First of all, it is HIS legacy, not anyone else's. If he wants to put it on the line, then that is his decision. If protecting his legacy was most important, then he wouldn't interview for the position. I'm not saying that Gill's legacy is a reason to hire him either, just that it shouldn't be held against him.
  6. Does it matter what Nebraska fans want? Dr. Tom is certainly not racist. He will NOT allow race/ethnicity to become a factor in this search. Having said that, I think the question that needs to be asked is, will Nebraska fans support Gill should he be named Head Coach? The answer is an obvious YES. Sure, there may be a person here or there who will make some ignorant remarks about Gill or make observations about how "articulate" he is...but these will be isolated incidents. These things will happen anywhere. If Osborne introduces Turner Gill as the new head coach of the football program, the entire state of Nebraska will (willingly, not reluctantly) welcome him with open arms.
  7. Mistaken as Cally can't do it by himself...hasn't this already been established? Isn't this why there is all this talk about firing BC in the first place?
  8. Rome on Callahan's offense: "An experiment gone wrong"
  9. Not much different than the press conference...
