  2. I was a Callahan fan, however, I am starting to like this Bo idea. Pelini has been a HC candidate for a while now, the knock on him has been that he isn't head coach material though. It seems to me that with the four letter network's portrayal of NU as not being able to compete anymore, and their stories on Pelini not being HC material that this is a match made in heaven. I can see Husker Nation embracing Bo as our own, a rough and mean team led by a rough and mean leader.
  3. I couldn't tell you the last time I used that phrase. Have you been keeping track? I'd be interested to know how often I've used that phrase here, so if have links post them, please. Post Number 44 You checked. That's priceless! I remembered. I have a buddy who is prone to the same tired line. Stuck in my head. I knew where to look.

  5. knapplc ... what is your fascination with "that guy." some guys have one phrase that makes them feel clever. they think it sounds awesome, but in reality it sounds played. don't be that guy.
  6. Passion is what makes Nebraska football what it is. I log on to Huskerboard every hour or so, checking out the newest rumors. Unfortunately passion breeds scrutiny, which in turn makes Nebraska a tough place to coach. It may seem out there, but is there any chance that potential coaches are checking out sites like Huskerboard? I'm sure potential coaches would do their research, and a few search engine keywords can get you here pretty easily. I think that a few coaching candidates have stumbled onto this site, or one like it. I, however, do not think it to be such a bad thing. We need someone at Nebraska who can handle pressure. As much as I was a Bill Callahan fan, he wasn't living up to the scrutiny. Maybe the expectations from media savvy fans, both professional and amateur, will help weed out the "passion-challenged."
  7. I don't really think it is fair to call me "that guy," or to challenge my knowledge on what it takes to be a Husker. I don't go to the university, I have never played for the team, but I cheer for the team every Saturday. And I really don't post just to hear myself talk. I am sorry if I come off that way. I am entitled to my opinion, it may be different than yours and I haven't ever said that it was the only opinion. I respect what you, and most of Husker nation, believe. I am not trying to be "that guy." I just don't understand putting me down, or trying to make me feel like I don't deserve to post what I think. I am just treating this as an open forum. JTG, I can see where you draw the resemblance to what you have been through. But I don't think that means that I am not able to have my opinion. I could be wrong, and history does repeat itself. But, as long as I am respectful, I am allowed to post what I think. I am no less of a Husker fan because I feel that Billy C deserves a chance. I am not the best guy to make the decision, nor am I in any position where my opinion actually counts. I am not going to hate the next coach if there is one. I will support this team forever, but my opinions on the individual players and coaches are mine to make. I plan to continue posting on this board. I thought that bringing a different view to this board would be a welcomed thing, and I still think it probably is.
  8. The Big Twelve Championship game was progress. People need to understand where this system is being built from. Bill has made many mistakes. He was also tackling uncharted territory. No other coach I can think of has had to tackle changing a programs philosophy when that program was a recent winner. And I to was at the Spring Game that year, and yes it was really good. The problem is as soon as we struggled, that excitement went out the door.
  9. I feel like it was commonly felt that BJax didn't have the speed of Lucky or the strength of Glenn. I didn't mean this as an attack on BJax. But how many people thought that BJax was going to be the premier back last year? I didn't. I am not sure on the 40 times, but I really feel like that Lucky had a faster 40 time than Jackson. If I am wrong then I am sorry, maybe you have a link? I don't mean to falsify stuff, I am simply stating what I feel and what I have believed. I am fine with being corrected. But I do feel like BJax was not expected to be as good as Lucky or Glenn going into last season, am I wrong? My argument is simply that it is hard to say BC mis-evaluated Brandon, I think he went with the info he had, and when he realized he was wrong, he changed. Isn't that all you can ask?
  10. This isn't true at all. If he is fired Bill will be fired way before we would have any idea what kind of coach we can get.
  11. My bad about the JUCO. I didn't get that from anywhere, for some reason I just thought that. It doesn't change anything though, he still came out of nowhere. Marlon Lucky and Cody Glenn were both way more "on the radar" going into last season. Regarding the "What has Bill Callahan done to say He is a Husker to Me." Bill Callahan wants to win football games, it is ludicrous to argue differently. He, as a head coach, is going to be a product of who is above him. Steve Pederson is to blame for the fall of tradition. Bill will embrace the tradition if he is embraced by the tradition. Many people never gave the man a chance. I don't think it is fair to call his character or where his heart is into the question. He wants to win for these fans, I'm pretty sure he said something to that effect in one of the past few weeks. He is a Husker because he is the head coach right now, and the only way he is staying is if Tom Osborne approves of him. If TO wants him to stay, is he a Husker then? Is Bo Pelini more of a Husker than Bill Callahan?
  12. I agree that he has seemed to have problems evaluating talent. The Joe Ganz / Sam Keller situation doesn't really exemplify this in my opinion. I think that choice was made more on the style of the QB than the actual QB. Is this right? No, but I believe Billy C really felt that the pro style QB was more fit for his offense. He was wrong, and hopefully he has learned something. The BJax situation was sad, but it is hard to not see Callahan's side of things. Marlon Lucky was highly touted out of high school and has the tools to be a great back. Kenny Wilson was a dominating runner who excelled in practice. Cody Glenn was a fan favorite and a great compliment to the style of Lucky. BJax seemingly came out of nowhere. A JUCO back and he fell under the radar. This happens quite a bit in football. See Drew Bledsoe over Tom Brady. There are a lot of players out on the field, you have to start with a base ranking. Brandon was just low on this list. Compare it to Kansas not being ranked at the beginning of this season. Plus some guys just perform better in games. Brandon didn't have outstanding speed or strength. It was his vision that set him a part, something that is not near as easy to see in a practice situation as say a 40 time. I'm sure the "no contact" bs of a practice theory has something to do with this also.
  13. I think that Bill is ready to change his approach. Joe Ganz seems to be a much better style of QB for this offense, and I think Bill can see this. If he doesn't change, if he doesn't adjust then I don't think he is the man for the job. These things take time, you have to allow trial and error to take place. I think he will adjust, if he doesn't then pull the trigger and fire him. Don't be hasty.
  14. I understand that there are programs who win consistently. Nebraska was there and we will be there again. Neither Bob Stoops or Pete Carrol had to undertake the offensive change that Bill has. I'm not saying Bill Callahan is Bob Stoops or Pete Carrol, he hasn't proved himself on that level YET. It is very hard to change one aspect of a program and still keep every other aspect sound. It takes time, there will be bumps. Few would have this program in a better place after 4 years with these circumstances. Things aren't as bad as they seem. 5-6 isn't good, I know this. But it takes time and we will win soon. You have to take your lumps.
  15. This time last year we were getting ready for the Big 12 Championship game. This board was dominated by Bill supporters. Now we are hoping for a bowl game, and the board is definitely pro-firing. Success should be savored, as it is not that easy to come by. I am not saying we were ever completely where we wanted to be, but we were making progress. Shouldn't setbacks be expected? I understand this year was terrible, but things tend to snowball in college athletics. With a new approach to the game, something Bill is ready to do, which includes a revamped defense, a more mobile QB, and a Dr. Tom aided focus on tradition it is very possible Bill can win. He has turned this offense around in 4 years. Not an easy task, and he is learning. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither are championship football programs. (and argue all you want that he inherited a great program, we were on the downslope and he was given the task to both put the brakes on and turn the program around, that takes time) Someone new would have to start over. Bill can win and he will win. He needs time, but we are very close to being there.
  16. Multiple reasons point to Colorado having more to play for. While both teams are trying to make a bowl game, the accomplishment would be an improvement for CU. Win or lose this season was a disappointment for the 'skers. However, if these players do care about this staff, they could come out with an "us against thew world" mentality. I personally think that the attitude of the team during the CU game should be used as a major judging point on whether or not Cally deserves to stay. If this team rallies around him it could be a turning point in the program. On the other side if Bill fails to fire up his team, on this arguably the most important game of his college career, I think the final nail in his coffin will have been driven. I right now am for Billy getting another year, but I feel like I will learn a lot watching this particular game. If I had to predict I would say it doesn't matter either way. I think the decision on Bill has already been made. My prediction is Friday NU 31 CU 14 driven by an inspired effort. Saturday Bill is fired, Watson named interim head coach. Whether or not Bill stays I really feel the program is moving in the right direction. Pederson was a bad apple, and tradition is important. Bill will embrace tradition if he stays, and if not you can bet your bottom dollar Dr. Tom will hire someone who values history.
  17. Wherever we play, it is important to remember bowl games are vastly important. If we have a new staff, that early, it gives an early practice season. More than likely there will be an interim staff. It will be up to that interim staff to use the extra practice time in ways that will most benefit the players. Also winning seasons are better than losing seasons. First things first though, we need to beat CU. I'm not sure that will be an easy task.
  18. The statement "Bill Callahan is fired," seems to already be regarded as fact rather than prediction. Is Callahan just a figure head in the fall of Steve Pederson? I will grant you that this season has been bad, but Callahan is an offensive guy, and as Billy is quick to point out the offense has been fine. Doesn't anyone want to see what a little continuity mixed with a little change can do? I think that Bill is a fighter, and just last year we were in the Big Twelve Championship game. I also think that one more year for Bill would be far from a bad idea.
  19. just news. and it is relevant. 5 star quarterbacks aren't bad. also i think it is hard to blame the kid. you only get one chance to play college football. would you want to come into a situation like this? the situation is completely different than Josh Seaman.
  20. According to the Kansas City Star, Blaine Gabbert, who was once orally committed to Nebraska, decided on Saturday he's going to Missouri. Gabbert, out of Parkway West in suburban St. Louis, is rated by Rivals.com as five-star recruit and the No. 3 pro-style quarterback in the Class of 2008. http://www.journalstar.com/blog/huskers.ph...p;tb=1&pb=1
  21. maybe the dumbest thing that has ever been posted on this board. tony dungy, bill cowher? i can't even believe you are serious. nebraska is a good job. its not the ultimate job. No one is going to leave a super bowl champion ... nm i'm deciding that you are joking b/c no one is that dense.
  22. As bad as it has been, it is in all likely hood only going to get worse. Oklahoma State was bad, as was Kansas, and granted we don't play that caliber of team these next two weeks, but the defense has given up. It is fairly evident that these players have little to no confidence. One big play from KState tomorrow and we are going to give up. Ron Prince and Dan Hawkins are both guys who would make giant strides with their fan bases if they wiped Nebraska's nose into the ground. With all the talk with resigning, there is no way that NU is even close mentally to being able to play this game. It all just seems like a recipe for disaster. The worst part is, with the staff and players that we have in place right now, I honestly don't see any possible way to plug the hole and salvage our dignity. I just hope that our fans can handle losing with class, we can regain our football status, but if we lose the title of Best Fans in College Football, it will be near impossible to regain.
  23. First off I am new to this board, well long time reader first time poster. I am a rumor monger like what seems to be everyone else. I was up until 10 on Monday night, along with most of you. And Tuesday I was listening to two separate radio stations when Pederson was fired. I was completely for the firing of Mr. Pederson, based on his lack of respect for Nebraska tradition. I also was for the hiring of Dr. Osborne. I however am a little more skeptical with Bill Callahan. In my heart of hearts I do not think he is the man for the job. But this isn't an easy job. I believe we can be good again and that this is a desirable position. However I am not sure the big names ala Bo Pelini are the way to go. In order for this mess to have order restored we are going to need a coaching STAFF. From the head guy to the towel boy there needs to be a desire to not only win, but win with pride. We need a coach who believes in pride first and then talent. A guy willing to recruit the linemen from Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota. Guys who love the University. I am also a realist. I played high school football in Nebraska, not very well but I was on a team. The speed and skill needed to resist mediocrity is very rarely, if ever, stashed in the corn-belt. So to reiterate, I believe our formula needs to include both the pride soaked back home boys and the speedy Army All Americans from the coasts. This sort of mix can be accomplished, it is essentially what Dr. Tom lived on. The way for this to happen is with a coaching STAFF. The head coach is the most important, I agree, but just as important is the offensive coordinator that knows the system we plan to run, a defensive coordinator with passion shooting out his veins, and a staff of guys that offer enough of a melting pot background for us to recruit anywhere, and everywhere. This is Nebraska football, forget the power of Red, we are supposed to win. We are supposed to play our tails off. But most of all we are supposed to shock the hell out of opponents with tradition and pride. The greatest scene in Memorial stadium is a defeated opponent's spirit being lifted by the standing ovation they get for merely trying. This weekend, next weekend, next year remember who you are, where you came from, and where you want to go. Don't get blood thirsty, or at least try to lace your thirst with pride and a plan.
