  1. I came to this board thinking that there would be more talk of x's and o's, of different offenses and defenses, personnel, etc. It has turned into a place for folks to go to vent against the Villian of the Day. It does get tiring to see the constant postings that belittle and berate the coach ("Clownahan," according to one persistent poster).

I must have missed all the threads you've started discussing X's and O's.

If that's what you want to talk about, nobody's stopping you. I'd bet you would get a lot of response if you wanted to discuss that stuff. I know I would join in.

A big problem about talking alignment and whatnot is not having a chalkboard to use. If you can figure out a way around that I think we could have some pretty good discussions about what works, what to do, what not to do, blah blah blah applesauce.

  2. That's not what I'm saying at all. I'm saying Callahan has failed to put a proper product out on that field, and he has failed to properly correct the problem.

    Don't go overboard here.

And that is where I think folks getting this idea Callahan may just be kept as HC. If Callahan is willing to make coaching changes and Osborne feels comfortable with that decision (ORRRRR...if Osborne is unable to get the new HC he wants), Callahan may just be around for another year or even two. Highly unlikely, but not out of the question either.

That will depend somewhat on the new coaching staff.

Sigmund Freud would like us to know - Callahan and Co. are gone.

  3. Callahan shows no remorse. Callahan either believes or has certainly given the impression that he believes that he is doing everything right, and there is no need for him to change his ways. He has been recalcitrant throughout his entire tenure at UNL. There's no comparison between the two situations whatsoever.

Why should he show "remorse"? He's not obligated to say that his whole system and method of coaching are wrong when he fails. He's said many times that he is responsible for the product out on the field, and that he is extremely disappointed and hurt by how the season has turned out. What more do you want? "I am a terrible coach and I resign?" He's not going to say that, nor should he. He's still going to believe in what he teaches, and he's going to continue coaching to the best of his ability, which I really think he is doing.

I'm not standing up for the job he's done. I just think it's wrong for everybody to act like Bill Callahan has done a terrible thing for which he needs to apologize.

  4. It is important to remember that TO did NOT make the decision to play LP because of his talent. That had NOTHING to do with that call. We had Ahman Green, who was fully capable of handling RB duties against Florida.

The two main reasons TO put Phillips back on the field were A.) LP showed remorse for what he had done, and convinced TO that he intended to change his ways; and B.) TO feared that cutting LP loose would cause him to spiral out of control and he could wind up in prison or worse.

  5. Another point that was brought up that I hadn't thought about...what if it was a fan from another school that made the call just to rag on Nebraska?

It is 99.9999999% likely that it was someone right here in Lincoln, who considers themselves to be a Husker Fan.

It's possible that it was some fan of another team just being stupid, but it's highly improbable.

  6. You bring up great points. I do not think that Callahan has had enough time to make changes with his staff. Until this season, nobody seemed to have major problems with Cosgrove's defense. Yes, there have been issues with the defense, but the strong performances closing out last season really made alot of people feel that the defense was headed in the right direction. Nebraska competed well with every top team they played.

Poor play of the defense this season has crippled the offense. Rather than being able to carry out a gameplan, the offense is forced to play catch up.

I do feel that there are definite playmakers on defense-- we just need a fiery, d-coordinator that can bring that out.

I know the writing on the wall suggests Callahan's firing, but if you look at Osborne's philosphies, they suggest second chances.

Four years is more than enough time to evaluate your defensive coordinator. Four games is plenty of time. This isn't Kansas - the expectations are far higher here at Nebraska. Any coach taking this job had better know what he's doing from the start, not learn on the fly. Further, Callahan has known Cosgrove for years. This isn't the first time he's seen this guy. No, he's had WAY more time than he needs to evaluate KC.

Now, if you think this is the first year anyone has had a problem with Cosgrove's defense you weren't paying very close attention in 2004. 70-10 against Texas Tech should have grabbed your attention. On top of that, all you had to do was ask a Wisconsin fan what they thought of KC when he left them in 2003. They were ecstatic! They wanted that guy out of there something fierce. He was bollixing things up in Madison just like he's doing in Lincoln.

I kind of get your point about the defense affecting the offense, but I think you're taking that way too far. Yes, momentum on one side of the ball can have an effect on the other side, but the reality is that it's the offense's job to score points. I fail to see how the defense was at fault when the O scored six points against an "OK" Missouri defense, or 14 points against not-too-good defenses from A&M and Okie State.

I completely agree that we have playmakers on defense. Our cupboard is NOT bare, and I fully expect a completely different defense in 2008, as long as Kevin Cosgrove isn't running the show.

TO does like to give people second chances, but I don't recall him giving that second chance to a person who shows no remorse. Callahan is unapologetic about the condition of this team. He insists that "the system is working" if you listen to his recent comments on Joe Ganz. That is not a man looking for a second chance - that is a man looking for another job.

The Bill Callahan era is, thankfully, drawing to a close. Hopefully we can find a coach that fits in with the culture here, and we can remember these times only as "the bad old days," and maybe they'll just make us appreciate that much more the good times to come.

  7. :lol::lol:

knapplc, enough. If you can't post without the personal attacks, either find a new board or don't post at all.

If you think calling someone "clueless" is a personal attack worthy of a warning, you should see what's been posted about me - by Freemason, among others - in my brief time here. I didn't see anyone coming to my defense then.

I shall not call anyone clueless again, however. Point taken.

I agree with you FreeMason was out of line as well. Course he did have more tackles than you. :) Hey life should be fun. Be Happy all. Some Husker fans didn't wake up today. Hope all of you will for sometime.

Yes, we both need to tone it down. I agree with that. I'm not looking for AR to give me a free pass, I'm just thinking the playing field should be level.

But I did make my little "pledge," and I plan on sticking to it. No more Mr. Mean Guy from me. Like you said, NM - this should be fun. We are all Husker Fans, so no more bickering for me.

Friend we are all in this together. Didn't seem to me that you had to take Juniors crap anymore than mine. We all get a little carried away sometimes but I think calmer heads are needed to make rational decisions don't you Junior? :)

After all your Dad probably would of beaten my Dad up...but being the good Minister my Dad was you'd be the one paying in hell. J/K

My dad's not a minister - but he has been an Elder in our church for 20+ years. Our dads would probably meet and suddenly break into a Bible study. :)

Yeah I'm sure they would and then after carefully relating all the "Facts" in the Bible the real fight would begin. :rollin

I'm certain that if you know all the facts you will enlighten us, right?

  8.

CU ended Nebraska's 35-year string of bowl games in 2004. This is a chance for a small measure of revenge for the boys in red.

Meh. They can take credit for that if they want, but the onus for the ending of that streak rests with us, not them.

We had every chance to win that game, and were so lackluster, so dispirited, that we took ourselves out of any contention whatsoever.

It was us, not them, that kept us out of a bowl game that year.

  9. I believe what the Quarterbacks are saying about Callahan. They are the ones that Callahan actually interacts with during a game. I seriously don't know of or don't remember seeing Callahan talk to a defensive player during a game. He is too busy getting ready for the next offensive series.

I haven't been to a Callahan coached game, as I moved to Alabama shortly before he was announced as coach, so maybe its different that what you see on TV, as far as his interaction with all the players?

I really believe Callahan could run an offense in the NFL. And, be very successful. I just don't think he can run an entire team of program at the college or NFL level. I wonder what fond memories or personal interaction Bo Ruud can recall. Or Zac Bowman?

I wish this entire staff luck as they move on, but make no mistake, they need to move on. I can't wait for TO to announce the next head coach at the University of Nebraska!!

    GO BIG RED!!!!!

    :yeah

Great points. From what I've seen (and I don't focus on the sidelines at the game, so take this for what it's worth) Callahan seems to largely interact with the other coaches and the QBs, with a smattering of other players mixed in. I don't think that's very different than many other coaches, though. I think that's pretty normal, at least from what I recall.

  10. We may lose the title of "greatest college football fans in America" after this season.

I agree. I think that this season has showcased a swath of poor fan behavior on our part. I wouldn't be surprised to hear people talk about how our fans have grown bitter and unfriendly.

What have YOU done that is poor behavior? What have YOU done that is bitter and unfriendly?

I'm guessing nothing. I'm guessing that you have continued to be the cool, friendly fan that you've likely always been (I'm assuming here, but I'm probably right).

So if YOU have always been, and continue to be, that great fan, what makes you think the vast majority of the rest of us haven't? And when you say you think the vast majority of us are more than likely the same good fan you are, it's not a great logical leap to realize that we're all really good fans, and it's only a tiny minority of people who are doing these stupid things.

I'm going to keep harping on this until I convince every Husker Fan in America that we're still good fans. Just because a few nitwits do dumb things doesn't make the rest of us bad fans.

And I'll say this for the 1,000th time - it does not matter what anyone who is not a Husker Fan thinks of us. As long as we stay cool, we're going to be OK.
