  1. So what will happen to make the future Bill Callahan do a better job than the present Bill Callahan? Why would one more year make any difference?

I still say the Walk-on Program is the key to our success.

They were instrumental to getting the most output from scholarship athletes and also made direct contributions on the field as well...(Resulting in some kickass team unity and I read somewhere we had the highest number of former Huskers being NFL team captains).

Right, but you realize that BC has pared our Walk-On program down to next to nothing, right? The program we all grew up with doesn't exist anymore, not in any way shape or form. What we have now is no different than what any other program currently has. It's nothing special.

  2. please don't take this the wrong way, i have a lot of respect for what brook berringer did,

but would brook berringer be the legend he is had he not died so tragically?

Yes, he had that kind of personality, that kind of drive and commitment. The kind that leaders have. I think in all the coach discussions that have been going on, people would have dropping his name for an Asst position.

I think he'd still be playing. He could very easily have turned into Tom Brady.

  3. From the AP recap of the game:

Kansas State coach Ron Prince had no complaints about Callahan.

"It's his job to coach his team," Prince said. "It's my job to try and stop him."

I completely agree with Coach Prince here. The whole concept of "running up the score" should be abolished in football. If you put on pads and cleats you should expect to stop the guy in front of you. If you can't, they score. That's how the game is played.

I have no sympathy for anyone crying about their opponent scoring on them, whether it be NU against KSU or KU against NU.

Honestly? Even if we invite a bad 1-AA team here to pick up a check and give us an easy W, it would be OK to score 120? I agree in this case, because K-State is a D1 team that takes football seriously.

I think when a team goes out and doesn't put forth any effort, the coach wants his team to see what can happen if they just go through the motions. Prince was probably happy we gave his players a lesson. I thought he halfback pass was a little much though.

Actually, when MU went for the fake field goal I felt a little sorry for Pinkel that he needed that to feel good about himself. Perhaps he's compensating. Can't he just buy a Ferrari instead.

OK, OK - you could probably come up with half a dozen caveats to my statement. You get the gist of what I'm saying though, and that's the main thing. Any BCS school, if that makes the statement more palatable.

  4. I didn't say Frost WAS an NFL type QB. I said he was more of one than Berringer. Frost never had a chance to make it as an NFL QB, but Berringer had even less of a chance.

Are you saying that based on skill or on Berringer's untimely death? If it's his death then that goes without saying, but if you're basing it on the skills of both, I think there's a pretty good argument to be made in favor of Berringer.

  5. I had USC and Texas as tough games (of course).

I also had Wake, because even though they did lose a lot we were playing at the home of the defending ACC champs, and I figured they'd put up more of a struggle.

I also had A&M and Okie State as "harder" games, along with Missouri.

I felt like we would walk all over everyone else, but those were six games out of twelve that we could potentially lose, plus Oklahoma, who I figured we'd play in the Big XII Championship.

  6.

Think about it – Berringer was the closest thing Nebraska had that resembled a true NFL QB in 20 years. I have no doubt whatsoever that he was going to be drafted, and he would have at least gotten a shot on the field. I believe he would have had at worst a decent NFL career. The kid could really play.

I'd say that Scott Frost was more of an NFL type QB than Berringer, and the NFL didn't even consider giving Frost a shot at QB. Berringer's numbers were nothing spectacular. Sure compared to Mickey Joseph and Joe Dailey, Berringer looks like a great NFL style QB, but that isn't saying a whole lot.

Frosty was never going to be an NFL QB. He was never cut out for it. If Bill Walsh couldn't make him into a passer, there's no way anyone else could, either. Frost's future in the NFL would always have been at DB, or maybe WR, or even on special teams as a KR or PR.

I have two words for why you probably weren't all that impressed with Berringer: Tommie. Frazier.

Had Brook not played "against" one of the greatest college football players to lace up cleats he would have knocked our socks off for four years here in Lincoln. Frazier should legitimately be mentioned along with greats like Herschel Walker and Archie Griffin. That's some pretty amazing company to be in, and we can't have expected too much from a guy competing with that for playing time.

No, Berringer had far, far more potential in the NFL than Scott did.

  7. Everyone concerned about fans cutting the new coach some slack should look no further than that schedule. IMO, there are at least 6 maybe 7 games on the 08' schedule that we should be able to pencil in a W.

And on the flip side of that, this year's schedule was murderous. Walking into this season, optimism at HIGH, I still felt like we were going to be in for a tough year based on strength of schedule alone. We've played some pretty good teams, and some other teams that just plain old came to play against us.

I'm not making excuses for BC and Co., don't get me wrong. But this was always going to be a tough year, even if we had played up to the potential we thought we'd play to.

  8. Mangino was given time. That's the only comparison I'm making.

An NU coach will never again get six years to see what he can/can't do. The revolving coaching door is about to start spinnning at NU.

Look at HC tenure for the last four coaches and tell me what the "trend" is. It's trending towards shorter HC coach tenures, not longer. Shorter generally means less stability. Solich got six years. Cally got four years. Will the next coach get three?

A few coaches have been able to turn schools around in a year or two. The huge majority don't. Patience is a virtue that's totally lacking at NU.

I get what you're saying. The main reason I can see that Callahan isn't being given more time is that he's just not a Husker. He is still a foreigner in these parts, and he's never attempted to acclimate himself here. There are a lot of things he could have done to reach out to the Husker community that he never attempted.

In the end I feel like Steve Pederson needed a Head Coach and Bill Callahan needed a job, and that's all there ever was or will be to the Bill Callahan Era here at Nebraska.

  9. knapplc, enough. If you can't post without the personal attacks, either find a new board or don't post at all.

If you think calling someone "clueless" is a personal attack worthy of a warning, you should see what's been posted about me - by Freemason, among others - in my brief time here. I didn't see anyone coming to my defense then.

I shall not call anyone clueless again, however. Point taken.

I agree with you FreeMason was out of line as well. Course he did have more tackles than you. :) Hey life should be fun. Be Happy all. Some Husker fans didn't wake up today. Hope all of you will for sometime.

Yes, we both need to tone it down. I agree with that. I'm not looking for AR to give me a free pass, I'm just thinking the playing field should be level.

But I did make my little "pledge," and I plan on sticking to it. No more Mr. Mean Guy from me. Like you said, NM - this should be fun. We are all Husker Fans, so no more bickering for me.

  10.

WE being the University, WE being all those who wanted Solich replaced, WE being all that wanted Pederson, WE being all those demanding Callahan go.

If you're a Husker Fan, you would be included in that "WE." We're all in this together. WE may not all have liked all of those decisions, but WE all have to live with them, especially if WE are going to continue to wear that big red N on our shirts/hats/coats/etc.

Yes including me. But I understand how dumb the question was. Do you? Callahan isn't leaving one way or the other without some pocket money. If any of you think different then you probably couldn't count the socks or do a soil sample.

If WE want him gone WEwill have to fire him. Callahan may be dumb as some have said but his agent isn't.

Absolutely. I'm not making excuses for the reporter - that was a first-year-out-of-college question from a veteran reporter. He got the answer he should have gotten from that question.

It just seemed by your answer that you were saying you didn't agree with any of those decisions and it was "all the other fans" who were wrong. It struck me as odd since the WE things you were saying were on opposite sides of the fence in the general discussion here. I could be wrong, though. :)

  11. Still the other question that keeps getting asked: why was Ganz not put in the games when Keller struggled?

That is the gazillion dollar question. The best answer I've heard (and the one that seems to fit the pattern) is that they don't do it that way in the Pro's, and that's how BC has been trying to run this program.

  12. Thanks for taking the time to do this research. I've been saying this since day one - our cupboard is not bare. Say what you will about Callahan and Co. but they can recruit.

We have a ton of talent on offense, and with a good scheme we have the potential for a decent-to-good defense.

It's not going to be the end of the world next year.
