  1. I think it's important to remember that the term "greatest fans in college football" is something Lee Corso put on us years ago. It's not self-given. We were the same good fans through the 70s, 80s and 90s (from my personal observation) before Corso felt it was necessary to call us that.

There's no way to determine who's the best. And really, who cares? It's enough for most of us to know that we're well-regarded in the eyes of the greater college football world. We really couldn't care less if we're the "best" fans. All we need to be is good fans, polite fans, knowledgeable fans, and leave it at that.

The bottom line is this - Corso could have called us anything he wants. He could have called us "the worst fans in college football." Instead, he saw our unity, our knowledge of the game, how well we treat our opponents in our home stadium and how well we comport ourselves when we travel. Whether that makes us the "best" or the seventh-best fans, at the very least it means that we're doing something right.

Let's keep our focus on doing whatever it is that made the rest of college football regard us well, and do our best to drown out the people who give us a bad name.

In the end, that's the only thing we have control over.

  2. Ironic how some people can throw garbage on a field and because I wear a certain colored T-Shirt I am automatically typecast by the same people in this thread that refuse to be typecast for the actions of a minority of their fan base.

Cry me a river. I was on your side in that conversation right up until you refused to hold the students accountable for their actions. At no time did I ever typecast ALL Colorado fans. I directly stated that I believe that upwards of 95% of Colorado fans are fine people, and it's the minority that gives you a bad name. You choose to ignore that, but focus on anything that casts you in a negative light. I have no sympathy for that mindset.

  3. Dave, I don't want to get into it with you, but your understanding of what makes fans “great” is... wrong. By your statement it can easily be construed that NO COLLEGE TEAM ANYWHERE has good fans, and that they are in fact all bad.

There isn’t a single team in this country whose fan base doesn’t include the kinds of people you describe. What makes one team’s fans “better” than another team’s fans is the frequency with which those actions take place. At Nebraska, they are by FAR the minority of actions.

The whole “best college football fans in the country” label is a joke. We’re great fans, but there is no non-subjective standard by which this can be measured. It’s been around for a while, and by and large Nebraska Fans show that they fall somewhere around that description, so it’s stuck for some time.

But today it’s being used as a cudgel against us because some fools out there do stupid things. Despite the fact that the vast majority of us loathe the very thought of picking on the children of a coach, there are idiots out there whose boundaries of Right and Wrong allow them to behave this way. Those folks can go to a store and buy Husker gear just like any of the rest of us, and they can get tickets to a game just like the rest of us. That doesn’t make them just like the rest of us, though.

What strikes me as terribly odd about your assertion that Husker Fans are NOT the best in the nation is that you call yourself a Husker Fan. You’re essentially saying that your association with those kinds of fools negates YOUR level of fandom. How in the world does that make sense to you? Are you saying that you’re just like the guys who threaten Cosgrove’s kids? If so, WHY? If not, how is it so difficult for you to realize that we abhor those actions (much like I assume you do?) and we, the Husker Fans as a whole, ARE NOT responsible for those actions?

There is no freaking way I am associated IN ANY WAY with anyone who would ever think it’s OK to say the things this article says were said to Cosgrove’s family. They have nothing to do with me, or with any Husker Fans I know. If you want to associate yourself with them, Dave, I would seriously suggest you reevaluate your loyalties.

  4. Wow there's a lot of members on this board that can be real ass-wipes. The kid is 15 years old, at least according to the profile. Maybe he is just trying to educate himself on the workings of the NCAA. So to all of you 40-something guys who still live in your mom's basement and think that the Real World is still gonna call....quit wishing....and get some fresh air.

As much complaining and whining that people do to the Admin and Mods about getting rid of 'trolls'....they should look into getting rid of the d-bags as well.

You don't happen to own a mirror, do you?

  5. Meanwhile, back at reality....

Seriously - you're going to have to give us more than this. Try using complete sentences, too. That helps. As it is, there's no way to know what you're talking about.

And quickly - there is no mechanism in place in the NCAA that you automatically have to be investigated if you're successful enough. Never existed, doesn't exist now, won't exist in the future.

  6. I saw this thread and I started thinking about the first and only time I talked to Tom Osborne. When I was a freshman at UNL (Fall 1997) I went to pick up my student tickets. Considering before I was a student I saw only four games at Memorial Stadium.

Anyway after recieving my tickets I was in awe. I remember just staring at all my tickets and I was so excited I turned around really fast and there was Tom Osborne. I turned so fast I about knocked him over and I our faces were less than an inch apart. I felt like such an idiot. But, at least I stopped him from falling down. I appologized and he just looked down and saw my tickets. He must have known that I was so excited because he chuckled and said don't worry about it and enjoy the tickets.

    Any way it was funny.

Later on in life when I first moved to California and I bought my first surf board I forgot surf wax at this place in Malibu, CA and I pulled the same move and did the same exact thing to Gabrielle Reese the professional sand volley ball player. I about face planted her too, she just laughed at me also.

No interest in TO here, but I would have definitely planted my face in GR.

    :yeah

  7. One last time, the section that was cleared out was right in the heart of the student section, the visitor section is almost on the opposite end of the stadium. If a Husker fan was hit then they were sitting right in the middle of the student section where those tickets are totally reserved for students, so there is only onepossibility, the Husker fan specifically went looking for trouble and sat in the student section even though his tickets were for somewhere else. I would have a hard time giving sympathy for such a move.

One last time - there were people in Husker colors sitting in sections near those students. I have talked to several people who were there, sitting one section over, who were the targets of these cups and bottles.

Your constant denial of facts is very telling of the mentality of you and other Colorado fans. You're always trying to shift the blame, as is your buddy scrumptious.

You two are not representing your school very well at all here. You should quit this before you dig yourselves any deeper.

  8. Just reporting what I heard; I have no idea if it is true or not. A cousin of mine is in the National Guard out of Lincoln. Apparently the Guard is guarding the Lincoln airport. One of my cousin's Guard friends reported that Bo Pelini was spotted getting off of a private jet that flew into Lincoln a few days ago (I didn't hear the exact date). Like I said, I don't know if it is true; I don't have any personal knowledge of it; but I thought others might be interested in the rumor I heard.

Why is the National Guard guarding the Lincoln airport?

They aren't. They share portions of the Lincoln airfield. The only problem with this "theory" is that the National Guard facility is over a mile away from the civilian airport for private aircraft.

    Myth = BUSTED!

    But thanks for playing. :)

  9. BeachBuffs, are you saying that you have never been to a Colorado/Nebraska football game in Boulder? That would be the only way to explain why you think that the ONLY PLACE Husker fans were sitting was in the visitors section.

It would explain why you wouldn’t understand that people stand outside the stadium and sell their tickets. It would explain why you wouldn’t understand that because of this, there were Husker Fans scattered all throughout the stadium, some even sitting next to the Colorado student section. Having to explain this to you is like having to explain to someone that the sun rises in the East.

Having to hash over every single possible angle of this argument, the facts of which are not in dispute, is childish. I have such conversations with my four-year-old when she doesn’t want to get in trouble for something we both know she did. If you want to be treated like a child, then by all means keep up this ridiculous defense of what your students did that night.

If you want to be treated like an adult, just admit they screwed up and stop bickering over irrelevant trivia.

  10. I guess I wouldn't much mind if it ended. All the other records have fallen. These will forever be known as the dark years.

Heck, if anything, maybe I'll be able to afford to go to a game with my wife w/out spending $100 + to get in the door.

    Not anytime soon you won't.

Personally I hope this streak outlives me. Of all the things that have happened to this team over the past five or six years, this is the one thing the fans have direct control over. It's OURS, and I don't want it to end.

It's a good thing there are about 85,000 people who agree with me, too.

  11. I am still trying to figure out how none of those students were recruited to play football when they were able to throw trash all way from the student section all the way across the stadium and hit people in the Nebraska section? Hell, if you can throw a marshmellow with a battery in it more then 100 yards, you should be an All-American Quarterback.

So you think the ONLY PLACE IN THE STADIUM where Nebraska fans were sitting was in the little diagram that scrumptious drew up?

Come on, man. Let's be realistic.

I will say this - judging by their behavior, those students would have made model players for Barnett's team.

I am saying that they do not sell general admission tickets in front of the student section. The only time I have ever seen people wearing opposing team gear in the student section were friends of CU students. I have never seen a family of four from Lincoln sitting in the middle of the student section. The student section is for the CU students, it isn't for regular CU fans or for opposing fans. So I am once again left pondering how the students in that section could have thrown trash over 100 yards to hit people in the NU section. Life is full of mysteries.......

You're being deliberately obtuse about this. Why?

  12. but he CAN make crudite like nobody's business.

What the hell does having the "crud" have to do with NU football? chuckleshuffle

Have you WATCHED our team this year?!??!? :)

From Wikipedia: "Crudités are traditional French appetizers comprised of grated raw vegetables soaked in a vinaigrette. Crudités often include carrot sticks, pepper strips, celery sticks, and asparagus spears."

That's probably more than anyone cares to know, but I thought I'd be helpful.
