  1. I have to say that I'm a smidge concerned about this right after the Texas loss. Maybe there's a bit of a hangover from the Texas match, but we've lost more games in the last two matches than we've lost in the previous 30 matches combined!

This is not the worst time for a slump (pre-tournament), but it's not exactly a GOOD time for one, either.

Does anyone know if Jordan will be attending NU. If there is one family that knows and could teach the rest of this team about what it means to play football at NU it would be the Makovicka's. It looks like we probably will see numerous other Makovicka's wearing the "N" as there are already 5 grandsons.......WOW! I can't wait.

    God bless the Makovickas!!! :clap

Any time anyone from that family wants to suit up, I say we let them.

  3. We practically did that against Texas, though. If we step it up more, KU will not score more than 21. BELIEVE IT!

:-P Hey, I've been saying this for the past few weeks. Soooner or later, we're going to pull it off!

I agree that it is possible. This team has yet to play to its potential. I will be watching, hoping to see it.

I'm just afraid that it is highly improbable. <_<

  4. My commenst below in BOLD:

"Not so fast, My Friend"-(in my Lee Corso voice).

Mangino is one of only five NCAA Division I-A football coaches who did not play college football.

---So? What's the significance of that? If the guy can coach, he can coach.

    * 2004 Kansas-Texas game

In 2004, Mangino paid a $5,000 fine for suggesting that officials acted with favoritism in an offensive pass interference call that affected the outcome of a game against Texas. Mangino implied that money and a BCS berth for the Big 12 Conference influenced the officials to make a call in favor of Texas. He and athletic director Lew Perkins issued public apologies the day after the incident.

---Again... so? He only said aloud what every coach thinks probably four or five times every season. I'll guarantee you Bob Devany said far worse. Guarantee.

    * NCAA penalties and probation

In 2006, the NCAA found five major violations including academic fraud had been committed by members of the Jayhawk football program under Mark Mangino. These major violations, along with four others from other sports contributed to the NCAA charging the Kansas University Athletics with "lack of institutional control". A graduate assistant was found to have supplied answers to correspondence courses being taken by potential athletes. As a result, the football team was limited for two years in its recruitment of junior college transfers, and lost two scholarships for each of the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

---This... not so good. No excuses for this. Get control of your program, or suffer the consequences. If this happens again the penalty will be far more stiff than limited Jucos and a couple of scholarships gone. Not cool, this one.

    * High school referee incident

During a high school football game, Mark Mangino was documented screaming and cursing at a high school referee for missing a call in which his son was involved. Mangino was asked to leave the game but refused. Security was called and Mangino was removed from the game. Mangino has been since banned from all Lawrence High School athletic events.[1]

--- Eh... not so good, but not a world breaker, either. He's a hothead, that's for sure. But this is not that big of a deal, really.

    * Raimond Pendleton incident

In 2007, during the season opener against the Central Michigan Chippewas, KU's Raimond Pendleton returned a CMU punt 77 yards for a touchdown. Pendleton dove into the end zone and was promptly flagged for excessive celebration, giving the Jayhawks a 15-yard penalty. When Pendleton returned to the sideline, Mangino promptly pulled him aside for a profanity-laced tongue-lashing. A video was shot of this exchange and posted on YouTube, and it quickly became one of the most-watched videos on the site for the week. [1] Mangino said he was bothered that the TV station that caught the video, WIBW-TV of Topeka, Kansas, ran the unedited audio on its Web site. Pendleton downplayed it, saying that he deserved it. WIBW deleted the video from its webpage, but a censored version of Mangino's tirade is available on the website of WDAF-TV in Kansas City, Missouri.

--- Again, so? He used potty-mouth words at one of his players? Apparently the person who found this significant has never played organized sports, and especially not football beyond Pop Warner. Coaches swear. It's not the end of the world.

Basically, if this is all the "dirt" they can dig up on Mangino, I'd say he's doing pretty good. I'm troubled by the academic fraud stuff. That's not cool at all, and there's no minimizing it. But the rest - it's just crap. Someone was looking for dirt, and when you look for dirt, you can usually find it. Mostly to me that all amounts to needless sniping, aside from the academics.

  5. I like his voice. I think he does a decent job of calling the games. I'm not too concerned when he adds inflection to his voice when the other team has a big play - it helps build the image of what's going on on the field.

Of course, NOBODY will ever compare to Lyle Bremser. When I grew up my Saturday day afternoon chore during Fall was splitting wood for our woodburner. Three hours in the chilly air with nothing by Lyle to keep me company - those were good times.

I liked Kent Pavelka well enough, and if I had to choose between Kent and Jim I'd probably choose Kent.

    I'm cool with Rose, though.

PS - Warren Swain was an abomination. Thank God he's gone!

  6. Pro QBs can NOT scramble! That is pure nonsense! Aside from rarities like Mike Vick, Randall Cunningham, Steve Young, Doug Flutie and maybe a couple of others, most every single QB in the NFL is taught to stay in that pocket, period.

Seriously dude, that's just plain wrong.

  7. JGS, you make many valid points, and I can't say I totally disagree with your 45-9 prediction. It's very possible.

But it's important to remember that Husker Fans aren't the only ones dissing Kansas' schedule. This is being done - legitimately, I might add - all across the nation. Kansas has NOT played a difficult schedule, and there's not much argument about it. Texas A&M? They stink. Just because they beat Nebraska at Nebraska doesn't make them good, because... well... we stink too!

The Jayhawks are a good team, they have a good coach, they have a good AD, and overall it's a very respectable program that has earned their top ten ranking as much as anyone else in the top ten (and more than, say, Ohio State or Boston College, who have played NOBODY).

But none of that means that Kansas has truly arrived yet. To really taste success, they need to win the Big XII North (something they could very easily do), and then go on to win the Big XII Championship. After that, go to a bowl game and either win it or play very respectably in it.

You have to remember where Husker Fans are coming from:

    25 straight 9-win seasons.

    30-something straight bowl games.

    Five National Championships.

    I-don't-know-how-many conference Championships.

    Three Heisman Trophy winners.

    Ridiculous numbers of Academic All-Americans.

288 games sold out in a row.

    A massive national fan base.

    Blah, blah, blah, blah....

Imagine that Kansas had every one of those accolades, and Nebraska had none. Then imagine how you would regard the Huskers if we suddenly had a good season and earned our way into the top ten. You would be reacting exactly the way we are to Kansas' current success.

The vast majority of Husker Fans that I have ever spoken to really respect Kansas. We like your program, we like your players, your coaches and your fans. You're pretty good people, so we have no reason to trash you guys. Sure there are those imbeciles who will, but there are those same imbeciles amongst Iowa State fans and Baylor fans and Texas fans - imbeciles are even there amongst Kansas fans. You have to ignore those guys, and not take it too personally. That's all.

Good luck to your team this week, and for the rest of the season. For my part, I'll be looking forward to seeing how Coach Mangino and his troops do, and I'll be rooting for you guys in every game after this weekend.

  8. I voted "Other." While speculation about Pelini is fun and all, there is as yet nothing to make anyone think BP will succeed BC. "Bogasms" aside, the guy is untested and perhaps unqualified for the job.

I personally think Frank Solich has as good of a chance of returning to coach again as Bo Pelini has of taking over.

Everyones untested until they get a chance HC job. Even T.O. was untested before he became head coach of Nebraska.

The poll was who people think will get the head coach not who is popular.

It is inherently a popularity contest because none of us know the answer. Bo P is the flavor of the month, but he's no more likely to be our next HC than Solich, or anyone else for that matter, as far as we all know now. So everyone is left to guess, and their guesses are based on what? Conjecture springing from popularity, that's what.

  9. It's great that he seems to be turning around a bottom feeder program. But I think it's a bit too big of a leap right now for Gill to take over here at Nebraska.

I said it before in another thread, but I totally agree with this sentiment. If Coach Gill keeps improving I think he's destined to be the HC back home here at Nebraska. But he needs more time to develop before taking over the reins.

Time and "seasoning" are all that's keeping him from wearing the headphones here. That's my take.

Gill would be considered an up and coming coach. He has as much experience as Meyer did when he took over Utah and more then Pelini has now. I do not understand all this sentiment to brush Gill aside.

I not endorsing the guy for the Head Coach job, but I would give him a hard look if I were an AD.

Personally, I'm not brushing him aside. I'm urging caution in the optimism regarding him.

Taking over Utah and taking over Nebraska are vastly different things, as I'm sure you'll agree. While it worked out for Urban Meyer, that's one case in literally dozens, most of which have not worked out so well. Further, Gill has only been HC at Buffalo for two seasons, and not yet two full seasons at that.

I don't get all the Pelini love when he has never had any HC experience, either.

  10. Kansas is a perfect example what can happen when you are well coached. They don't have better talent than us, they don't have better facilities than us, they don't have better fans than us, they don't have a bigger recruiting base than us, they don't get more T.V. exposure than us, they're not faster, bigger, stronger or more talented than us. The difference is that they're coaching staff is able to get the most out of the talent that they do have. They're coaching staff prepares their players to play, motivates them when they need to be motivated and most importantly makes adjustments when they need to be made.

This is not an isolated incident, this sort of thing is happening all over the Big 12 and the country. It's happening at places like Missouri, Kansas, Kansas st, Colorado, Arizona st, Oregon, Boston College, South Florida, Rutgers, West Virginia, Wake Forest, Virginia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Illinois, Virginia Tech, Hawaii, Boise st, I think you get the point. It's happening all over the country, but it's not happening at Nebraska. I take my hat off to these schools, I'm completely jealous of the direction that their programs are heading in and the coaching staffs that are guiding them. I only hope that one day other schools and their fans will again be jealous of Nebraska!

    :yeah

This year more than any other is showing us what teams can do with proper motivation, recruiting classes and gaudy Heisman candidates notwithstanding.

  11. It's great that he seems to be turning around a bottom feeder program. But I think it's a bit too big of a leap right now for Gill to take over here at Nebraska.

  12. Wait a minute..Val's Pizza is worse then Pizza Hut?

What happened since I've been gone?

How long have you been gone? Val’s has been mediocre at best for a LONG time.

They really started going downhill when they sold their souls to the buffet model. Everything became huge fluffy breadsticks and overcooked, soft pasta. It’s all bread and crap pasta now, with little or no sauce, and NONE of the love they used to put in their food.

What sickens me is going into Val’s on Holdrege and seeing all the pictures on the wall, and seeing how they hang their hat on the tradition of Val and Zena (sorry if I misspelled those), when they couldn’t be further from what Valentino’s used to be back in the day.

I started going to Val’s when I was four or five, back in the 70s when my folks used to take us to the State Fair. Every single year we would go look at the fair, then eat dinner at Val’s by East Campus. The food was excellent, way better than it is today.

Heck, back in the 60s when my dad was going to Midland College, he and his roommate would drive down to Lincoln, pick up 15-20 pizzas, drive them back up to Fremont and sell them on campus out of the car. And when people knew they had Val’s pizza, they’d come running across campus to get one.

It’s just not like that now. The pizza isn’t nearly as good, and the pasta is… horrendous. I’m sorry, but there’s just no other way to put it.

  13. I am not one to jump on rumors and spread them. In fact i am going agianst my own rule by simply posting this. However, my brother goes to school in Oklahoma (not OU or OSU) and his roomates parents are boosters at LSU..........(I know, I know my uncles brothers dogs, walker is too). He said Pelini is very interested if the opportunity exists to come to NU. Not that he has been contacted or actually has already signed papers, just that he is interested in a head coaching job and would be if the one at NU were to open up. Take it for what its worth. I believe this a little more than everyone saying TO has contacted BP and the deal is done. This atleast sounds a little more legit. But i think with SP out and TO in as AD, Pelini would not rule out coming back.

Let all of the Bogasm jokes begin.

Now forward this email this to ten friends.

If eight of them send it back to you, you're a good person.

If six send it back to you, you have a good heart.

If four send it back to you, you need to work on your charm.

If only two people send it back to you, you are not a nice person.

If nobody sends it back to you, your name must be Steve Pedersen.
