  1. So the team looked bad this week so its clear this Mickey can't possible have HC chops? Got it.

I get the resume argument and I haven't really seen anyone argue that Mickey HAS to be the next coach.

Just funny to me that by some commenters' logic, guys like Gundy and Clawson should be let go after today's performances. Heck, those coaches actually got to recruit all their players and even lead spring and fall practices.

Would think there'd be more general support for him as a former Husker than trying to constantly find reason for why he's not good enough for "us".

  2. For the first time since the Frost/Chinander firings, was disappointed with the coaching, specifically Whipple.

It was clear Purdy was no where near prepared for the combination of our O-line and the Illinois D. While he looked bad passing, he even made Thomson look like Lamar Jackson with how slow he moves.

Yet, Smothers could barely get a sniff. And with the "only" a 2 score deficit, Whipple seemingly called played to simply get the offense off the field. Would've liked to have seen Mickey take more command here.

Is he doing all that well with what he has?  Today, the team looked a lot like how they played under Frost.  If Mickey were doing all that well, then shouldn't NU be playing significantly better?  Mickey's wins were against two of the worst teams in the Big Ten, and the Rutgers game was a terribly played game.  I hear fans saying "NU is playing better under Mickey" but NU is playing about the same as they were last year.  Mickey has taken advantage of trading out Michigan State and Ohio State for Indiana and Rutgers.

TO inherited one of the best programs in college football, and struggled to maintain that level his first 6 years.  I admit Bo did very well as a first-time head coach, but he had been a successful DC at three different college programs before coming back to NU as Head Coach.  Bo also inherited a lot of talent, especially on defense.  This year's coaching hire is a lot different situation than either TO's or Bo's situations.  This program is in need of a complete rebuild.  It needs a new voice leading this team.  I would rather have an experienced head coach who has led programs before.

Tell me how you feel about Mike Gundy? His team looked worse than NU today. While I am disappointed with today's performance (mostly with Whipple's), I rarely see teams perform with an upward trajectory every week.

Can’t wait for the result of the bowl game. Just getting to a bowl would give MJ plenty of leverage with Trev.

I agree that Mickey can improve his case by winning games. I just don't think losses will necessarily hurt his case or it be the determining factor.

I agree - see my cons list above.

Yet, we'd probably never know which "big name" coach was "missed out on" if Mickey is offered the gig. It's unlikely Trev will "settle" for Mickey if there's truly a better option that wanted the job.

Seriously, why do people change up the words I say?  No wonder it gets frustrating around Husker football.

    You say

"Why do you want Mickey to hold onto a number of coaches who have been part of an unsuccessful staff?  You are acting like Nebraska has no other choice but to keep doing what we’ve been doing with the same players and the same coaches."

    I had said

"Let him retain who he want, hire who he want"... which means, keep someone or no one, I don't care.  It's up to him.  Isolate deficiencies, recruit better coaches.

    You say

"Starting over with a new staff and some loss of players may hurt in the short run but I think it’s what is necessary in the long run.

    I will reply with

"if 20 years of doing the same thing and still doing the same thing and then doing the same thing.... it isn't a helpful situation for long run or short run;  it's still doing the same thing"  You got that?

    You say

Trev isn’t thinking about what this new coach is gonna do in year 1, he’s thinking what the new coach and staff is going to do in years 2-3 and beyond.

    I will say

    Durrrrr...

    I will then add..

Same story, Same thing, Different contract

    PS.

Stop making things so complicated when it really isn't so difficult to see.  We need a leader (Mickey), with a CEO "hands off approach with assistants" (Mickey), a super awesome recruiter for talent and coaches (Mickey), a leader of young men (Mickey), a coach who has been around a lot of winning (Micky) and an ex-Husker who loves Nebraska football (Mickey) and a person who will put his best effort into the program (Mickey) and a coach that players love to play for (Mickey).

Mickey might have amazing thoughts about how he wants his offense and defense to play in 2023 and beyond, and I can only hope Trev will be wise enough to listen.

And in response to the original post, I'll add that the coaches some fans want to retain are in their first season here (sans Beckton). Can't really lay this s#!t show on them.

SMDH. This comment drives me nuts. Why not give him a chance? He has won the locker room. He is getting this team better and he didn't buy the groceries to cook the dinner. Top receiver on the team came here because of him. Jamar Chase and Justin Jefferson went to LSU because of him. He won a Natty and the top guys on that team he recruited. So go ahead and get Meyer or Campbell and all those coaches with all this so called experience. You need a coach who can relate to kids and buy into the process. This is what is boils down to. Nebraska and college football are not ready for black head coaches. Period. You can recruit black players, they can win titles for you and you will cheer for them, but no head coaches. They are better suited for coordinator positions. They are good recruiters. They don't have experience. All low key and most folks know it.

Had me with the first half about Joseph then lost me with the race crap. Within the realm of college football, I always viewed NU as more of a trendsetter in the "raced doesn't matter" category. Had a lot of black QBs in a time when some actually thought skin color translated to QB ability (or lack thereof).

  8. I'm with @admoin this depate. You can throw stats at me all night long, and Thompson definitely flailed some odd ducks out there. Yet, if I need one last drive to try to win a game, I'm taking Thompson every time over Martinez. Even if Thompson doesn't always make the play he seems to better understand what play needs to be made, more than I thought Martinez did his last 2 seasons with NU.

  9. I learned I'll be perfectly content if the interim tag was removed from Joseph's title.

I could nit-pic some of the game plan and specific plays, and the team has flaws that won't be fixed this year, but I'm pleased overall with what I'm seeing since the coaching changes.

Hard to believe a Rutgers home game didn’t rate First Team announcers (eh?) Their definition of a sellout is a bit different than our definition of a sellout.

Definitely the most empty sellout I've seen. At least in the Callahan years, Husker fans waited til halftime to empty a sellout.
