  1. nickel defense = bad defense. It used to drive me crazy when Missouri would pass underneath the defense time after time under Osborne when he would go to the nickel late in the game to keep them from going deep.

I am not a fan of the nickel defense.

Nickel Defense is not the same as prevent. You can still blitz and do a lot of good things on D with 5 DB's as opposed to the standard 4.

nickel defense prevents you from winning.....same difference. :box

If you think you can cover wide receivers with LB's then go ahead and stay in that mind set. I don't see why you wouldn't want to put in personnel packages to match up with the offense, that is all Nickel is a personnel package. The coaches then decide what defense they want to run out of it, cover 2, man coverage, etc. Bo talks about it all the time, NU matches personnel. They will use Base, Nickel, Dime, and Dollar personnel packages to run their defenses.

  2. NOT AT NEBRASKA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A base nickel will never work in the Big 12. We would only be limiting ourselves, and it wouldn't play to our strengths anymore than a 3-4 would!

You think Pelini has built his rep with a bogus defensive scheme? Hey guys I know this cover two stuff has worked for years but lets scrape it for some fixer upper base D after game two! Come on!!!

In certain situations we will run it but we would never survive a conference opponent who commited to run on us, Which many will.

Compare our D to say OU's offense. Are they good because they don't seem to have an real identity? Or are they good because they can attack in a number of different ways, with a multitude of formations?

Nickel is only a term on the type of personnel used. The base cover two concept is having safeties split the field deep to provide help on outside routes as well as for the shorter underneath routes. The 5 other defenders play the short underneath routes and outside routes, usually in a man to man. You can still run a cover two scheme in a nickel set, which is only what type of personnel are on the field. If the defense has 3 wide receivers, you would rather have another DB cover him man to man than a LB. Remember the Safeties have to stay deeper so moving one of them up on the third receiver is not an option in Cover 2. I think you will see alot of cover 2 with Nickel Personnel.

  4. With lots of open dates in the next few years, wouldn't it be great if we could schedule Ohio & Buffalo?

I wonder if this has even been considered. I think it would make as much sense as San Jose State.

Not to disparrage what Solich and Gill are doing, but it seems clear that Bo and Co want to upgrade the strength of schedule in the upcoming years. The addition of Fresno State is an idication of that, much tougher opponent right now than Ohio and Buffalo. The other thing to consider is that Turner Gill most likely won't be at Buffalo in 3 years, he is going to get a shot at a bigger program either after this year or definately after next season.

Who knows what Buffalo could be in 5 years if Gill stays there? Jim Leavitt built South Florida literally from the ground up. They are now a solid competitor. Maybe Gill would rather have his own legacy than take over someone else's. :dunno

There is a major difference between USF and Buffalo, the BCS. USF is in a "power" conference with a guaranteed BCS invite and Buffalo is not. I just don't see Turner staying there too long.

USF didn't start off in the Big East, they didn't even start in D-1. They began as I-AA in 1997, then became D-1 in 2001, as an independent. In 2003, they moved to Conference USA before moving to the Big East 2005. It wasn't an overnight deal that they moved to the Big East. Who's to say Buffalo won't move to a power conference, or join a conference that has yet to form? They have a similar enrollment as USF. Never say never and think of the big picture, maybe Turner is happy there and building it up.

I think it is safe to say Buffalo won't be in a BCS conference in the next 2 years. If there aren't any real prospects for them to move into one by then, I just don't see him staying. Good coaches all have egos that drive them to try and succeed at the next level.

  5. I know all this spread offense is the new wave but gawd its boring to watch.

I'm finding myself loving to watch West Virginia and becoming a fan of their team and option .

And since Solich and his Millard North offense (Give the ball to the QB to run 90% of the time) and the down years of Clownahan I think I am losing some of my passion for NU.

I realize we can't go back to the 90's and a power running attack but this spread WC crap just speaks of being a pu&&y type NON-PHYSICAL mamby pampy flag football game.

Now the reason we can't run the ball is the O line isn't trained to run the ball.

Hard to switch over from pass block to the run..................OKAY?

And maybe Shawn Watson is NOT the man to be offensive cordinator.

Since the start of the big 12 we have been slowly sliding back into the pack.

Reminds me of when Penn State joined the big 10.

At one time they were a very strong national power.

Now they once in awhile will get a peak at the top of the conference.

But they will never contend for another national title at least in my life time.

Kind of like my opinion of Nebraska.

We are the Penn State of the Big 12.

How is the forward pass boring to watch? Three yards and a cloud of dust will not help when it's third and long. What throwing QB plus good WRs want to go to schools that just like to pound the rock for a one yard gain? None. If you cant throw the ball your chances of beating good run defenses are slim. I like the offense. I like the balance. The running game will get there. Come on big daddy, you should know better.

Not so fast. In 1994, we played KState which ended the season with a top 5 running D. We started our 3rd string QB, and we had no problem running on them. I don't put either of our first two oppenents in that strong running D category. Quite simply, we have got to get better at pounding the rock. If we don't, we're going to take some serious lumps this season. It's not like this is the first time we've seen an 8 in the box D before. Every team used to stack the line to stop our run. We've got to be able to find a way to run the ball.

Yeah but the 8 man in the box defense is why TO ran the option. The option, if ran properly, creates blocking angles and allows you to beat 8-9 defenders stacked in. Once they started to move back or outside a bit, TO would hit them with power runs up the gut. 8-9 in the box for a standard running game is not easy to beat for a balanced offense. The pass is now what the option used to be.
