My fault for being unclear. He made a big point about NOT looking for a press conference guy and Rhule is a HUGE press conference guy. An East Coast smooth talker. He's a great coach, as well, but just seems odd

TA said he was not going to hire someone just to win the first presser, that was a reference to the SF hire. His point was that he was going to hire who he feels is the right candidate based his research. That being said, if a person is the right candidate, you don’t NOT hire him if he also happens to be a good presser guy.

I love Rhule, but what happened to Trev talking about not winning the press conference? Out of everyone available, he's the most polished and biggest press conference guy.

I am not following, are you implying that TA hired Rhule because he will win the presser?

I've heard a lot of adjectives in my day, in reference to Lane Kiffin.  The is the fist time I've ever heard him described as flashy.   What makes him flashy?

He is widely considered a hot commodity of a coaching hire candidate that would generate a lot of buzz, mostly for surface-based reasons such as his public persona. Hiring Kiffen would bring national buzz and excitement because of this, that is what makes him a flashy candidate. Kleinman isn’t a flashy candidate, he isn’t the first person fans think off as a good target for their school to hire and wouldn’t generate the buzz hiring Kiffen would.

Honestly, how can KSU get better coaches for basketball and now football?  Those are the biggest men's programs at either school and so far, they have had better success.

There new basketball coach was an assistant at Baylor for years.  WE all know about Klieman now, who was on Bohls staff for years and credits him with everything.  I am willing to sacrifice substance for flashy at this point.  We have gone flashy to long now.

That part I bolded is your answer. Everyone keeps talking about getting a “flashy” hire and express disdain for any candidate that they deem as not flashy enough. Kiffen has positives, but honestly I would take Kleinman over Kiffen every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Frankly Kiffen’s resume and credentials don’t hold a candle to Kleinman’s, but for a large number of people apparently Kiffen is better because he is a flashy candidate.

Yeah and I thought I heard Monken said he would run a different offense, although I think it would be more of the Big Ten style.  Which means he would put his idea on paper and expect the OC to carry it out.  Just wonder what it would look like?  Michigan?  Illinois?  Minn?  Who knows... but still.... not too shabby

Pure guess, but I think it would be a run heavy power spread.with option elements. Monken is big on establishing Offensive and Defensive systems that fit the job, both culture and level of talent available.

I would be thrilled with Rhule or Fickell.  Dare I say it, even Monken or Mickey (because I want a leader of men on board, recruiting NFL guys, setting the players straight, being honest, building the brand and adjusting to Big Ten play).

Trust me, fingers crossed we get someone most of us like by the end of the weekend. :)

I am 100% with you on all of those choices, though I would heavily prefer Monken over MJ.

I would be. Early signing period is just around the corner also. Hope I'm proven wrong but several articles out there saying he turned NE down.

Getting on TV helps build your brand, which helps you recruit. Recruiting is priority #1, 2, and 3 as soon as he takes the job due to the early signing period in just 3 weeks or so.

So nobody on Huskerboard can answer my question about Luke Fickell that I posted way earlier? I ask bc Im trying to understand that's all.

Luke Fickell is not anywhere close to the SF scenario. IMO, LF would be a homerun hire. LF was on OSU's staff under Jim Tressel for 9 seasons, the last 6 as the Co-DC/LB coach. He then had a stint as the interim HC at Ohio State for a season (2011) after JT left due to the scandal. Urban Meyer retained him on his new staff at OSU as the CO-DC/LB coach for 5 more seasons. LF then took the Cinncinati job in 2017.

LF took over at Cincy after Tommy Tuberville was let go; TT inherited a 9-10 win Cincy program from Butch Jones and turned it into a 4 win program after 4 seasons and only 1 player drafted into the NFL. LF took a season to right the ship, winning only 4 games in his first season. After that, his Cincy teams went 11-2, 11-3, 9-1, and 13-1 last season (including an appearance in the CFB Playoff). His team last year had 9 players drafted into the NFL, including Sauce Gardiner, 5 of which went in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounds. This year LF's team is 9-2, despite losing a ton of talent off of last year's team, a tribute to the depth he has built there.

Overall LF has a wealth of experience coaching under 2 national title winning coaches, he has experience what being the HC at a big time program would be like (admittedly just for 1 season, but he also had to deal with all of the interim coach pressures & questions at OSU that MJ has dealt with this year at NU), and he has built Cincy into a powerhouse program that will be moving to a power 5 conference next year.

LF emphasizes O-Line play (https://www.si.com/college/cincinnati/football/luke-fickell-we-are-an-offensive-line-driven-program), culture, and player development. He also has the ability to properly assess and recruit talent, Cincy isn't quite as tough to recruit to as many non-P5 programs, but it doesn't have the same resources as say Nebraska. Despite the lack of resources, LF has Cincy 25th in the composite team recruiting rankings this year after inheriting a team that was in the 60's and 70's when he took over.

I am going to go full cop out and say that I am not qualified to hire a football coach, and I simply hope we hire a person who finally wins.  I don't care if they put a giant panda in charge if we win 9 games per year again.

BOB reminds me of like toast.  Just plain and boring. Like dude is just dull.

Any Chance Jeff could get Todd to come over for like $3mill/year?  Making $2 million now.

Pretty sure he is talking about Jeff not Todd

I don't want to say this on record, but I will....  I actually do like Monken a lot.  Love Army (no offense, but Navy too).

Maybe it will be low-ball money so he can hire some kick a$$ coaches around him?  I wonder who he knows.... ?  And how he can recruit to Nebraska ?

I will forget the squid part, but appreciate the compliment of Army/Monken.

Monken already recruits nationally, all academies do. Admission is actually based on state population and directly correlates to the number of House Reps a state has since a member of Congress, either House or Senate, has to nominate you. In essence you are filling out 4 applications, one for the academy and one each for your local house rep and each senator. There are also a couple hundred of VP and Pres noms as well, but the bulk is through reps. Because of that, they have to recruit nationally by default, sort of like NU. If Monken adjusts his O scheme I think he could attract skill talent, plus he will bring a rep of having top notch D’s with him that his staff could use to attract top talent on that side of the ball. It wouldn’t hurt to bring Nate Woody or convince Jay Bateman to come back though for D-Coordinator.

I'm putting the cutoff for Rhule tomorrow.

It's possible that Trev would wait till next weekend to announce Rhule, but I would think if he were insistent on waiting for the season to conclude that he'd have said that on his radio show last week. But it's possible it's Rhule and they're still ironing out the contract details (I hope not)

Edit: to be clear, I hope they're not still ironing out details. I'd be very happy with Rhule

I actually would be hoping that they ARE still ironing out the details if Rhule was my top pick. It would explain the delay.
