  1. I regards to the recruiting rankings, many of those kids are gone.  They were either run off or ran away on their own.  Frost talks about culture improvement.  It hasn't translated into what everybody cares about.  Wins.

Under Riley, we would hardly compete, eh?  Riley was 9-4 his second season.  Things were going the right way.  Then some boosters cut Riley's legs off and forced him to fire Banker while they hired Diaco.  Diaco.  The defensive coordinator that made Frost look competent last week.  People like to rip Riley because he didn't win right away and wasn't the name brand they wanted.  So we heard BS about weightlifting, etc to make excuses for the brand going the wrong way.  Today's reality is Urban isn't walking through that door.  Maybe some retread, but not a name brand who has recently been successful.

Frost isn't getting fired.  He's owed too much money.  Period.  The issue down the road is who are we going to hire?  An up and coming coach who will leave once they've achieved some success?  Nebraska has some very big issues.  No in-state recruiting base to speak of.  No real recruiting base nearby.  Nice facilities but everybody has nice facilities these days.

We haven't completed those throws all season.  Or last season.  Clearly, opposing teams aren't worried about it.

They're not?  I don't seem to remember too many teams stacking 8 in the box.  I didn't see it today.  Did you?  The point that I tried to make is you have to take an occasional shot while doing what Nebraska does best which is running the football.  If you don't throw the ball down the field, the defense will put 8 in the box and the running game will be moot.

BTW, those passes were completed last week against Slump Buster:  Bob Diaco.

    8. Speaking of needing a better pass rush- it’s the exact reason NU ranks 100 out of 127 in third down defense and gives up a first down 46% of the time. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen a P5 team other than maybe Vanderbilt be as inept as we are in obvious passing situations, but it stems from the inability to get pressure on the QB. This same thing has plagued NU since Randy Gregory left, how we haven’t been able to land a premier pass rusher blows my mind but we won’t get better at third down defense until we find one. NU has forced 4 total three and outs the last three games- and one of those was Illinois’ backups running the ball to run the clock out at the end of that game. The lack of pass rush is a large large piece of this

Excellent post overall.  #8 is painful.

Arizona just fired Sumlin. He's 9-20 after 3yrs.

    Frost is 11-20.
ASU beat em like 70-7 so there’s that. We might be a bit more competitive than that. Still, that record Frosty is building looks pretty bad.

You'd think Arizona would be better.  Great weather.  A few good high school players in Arizona with California right next door.  They have advantages Nebraska does not.

I don't want Frost to get canned.  Not after this season, anyway. I want him to figure it out.  Give him another year. If the ship isn't noticeably turning in the right direction by midseason next year it will be abundantly obvious to virtually everyone it's time to make a change.

The ship was sailing the right way the second half of season 1.  It's been sinking since.

Just stop making excuses for Frost. It's year 3 and Minnesota was down 33 players today. They're not making excuses, they're finding ways to win still.

I didn't know this until just now, but Minnesota's run D ranks 111 in the nation when healthy.  Did anybody ask Scott why he didn't run the ball down their throats given their ranking and player issues?  Seems like a no-brainer given those facts and the weather.

We do and can’t hit them. That was demonstrated today.  Opponents know that too. And that makes easier to defend the rest of our offense.
Get a better quarterback and a good running back game and a lot of what ails us goes away.

You don't necessarily have to complete those throws to keep them honest.  Today, Martinez ran at will on runs that went north/south.  Not so well on east/west runs.   Unfortunately Frost is hardheaded and continues to run and throw the ball sideways leaving us behind the chains...especially with runs with Mills  Being behind the chains forces us to pass and you've explained how that worked.  Needing to complete passes and keeping the defense honest are two different things.

Now imagine us running what Minnesota did today.  Spread the field and run Martinez.  Run Wondale.  Run Luke.  Throw the occasional bomb, but also throw slants and crossing/rub routes.  Throw balls off of play action to the tightends.  That would have been much more successful than Frost's usual gameplan of running east/west and putting our guys in a position where they have to complete a 9-10  yard pass just to get first down.

    The questions are

    1. why get abused in the zone for so long, especially after playing man the majority of the Purdue game against FAR better WRs.  He did it against PSU as well again a team with FAR better WRs.  I'm sure the Cam ejection spooked him a little, but that WR crew had nothing that should scare you

    2.  Why so many 1st and 2nd downs did he opt to only have two true DL in the game?  Again, you only had one thing to worry about today, Ibrehim.  Expecting Payne and Tannor to hold an edge is a big bite to chew,

    3.  Against a group of OLinemen that have been thrown together pretty much due to opt outs and current Covid concerns, does one not get creative and aggressive with his rushes and blitz packages.

Minnesota had a good gameplan.  They went with 4 and 5 wide and spread the defense.  Then they threw slants and crosses against our zone for nice gains.  Had we played man, they would have had bigger gains with the pass.  That's what the modern passing game looks like and it's successful when done right.  It doesn't help that our guys are 10 yards off of the LOS giving away easy yards.  It doesn't help that being 10 yards off the LOS also doesn't disrupt their timing or throw them off of their routes.  It doesn't help that our DC rushed four guys ad nauseam and didn't put pressure on the QB via twists, blitzes, dogs, etc.  Then with the defense spread out, that created running lanes and empty space for their backs.  On the other side, we didn't do any of that.

The defense didn't lose today's game.  Nobody wins a lot of games with 17 points and barely over 300 yards of offense.  Wanna take pressure off of our QB?  Do what Minnesota did with what Nebraska does well.  Spread the field and run Martinez.  Mix in a few throws DOWNFIELD to keep them honest.  Give Wondale and McCaffrey the ball with room to operate.  Why McCaffrey is on the bench is beyond me.  We have two playmakers on the team and leaving one on the bench is nuts.  Put him in the slot.  Put him in at wideout.  Get him on the field and give him the damn ball.

I don't even know why I bothered listening to it but he didn't say the one thing I was hoping to hear that would've given me the slightest glimmer of hope... "What we are doing just isn't working, as coaches we need to go back to the drawing board and see what we can do to put these guy sin better positions to win."

That takes self-reflection and maturity.  He's not there yet.  He may never get there.

  10. Guys needs to get over this better talent garbage.  We don't have better talent.  If we did, we'd win.  We'd put guys in the NFL.  Your only argument is recruiting services rankings while forgetting four stars keep quitting. Does that RB room look stock with talent?  How about the WR room?  We have a center who can't even snap the ball.  Our team is devoid of talent and lacking in coaching and that's why our boys are the bottom dweller in what many consider the weakest division in the Power 5.  Welcome to reality.

It does take a bit away from the top programs but it also helps them fill in any missing pieces too. It's more of a crap shoot when you get beyond the elite teams. Struggling teams like Nebraska is right now probably also get hurt by it because it gives players an easy out. Seems so many we have lost to the portal left very prematurely. It's one thing to say it prevents stockpiling and getting buried on the depth chart but what about these first year kids?

IMO it really plays hell with a team's ability to build and manage the roster. I hate to be the old "get off my lawn" curmudgeon but CFB and players seemed to be doing okay before the portal. I hate the transfer portal and really think it has damaged the game. It is undermining the team first, student athlete ideals that made CFB so much better than the NFL. There is no loyalty left in the game and that really ruins it for me.

Are you still working for the same company you did when you got your first job at 16?  These kids have five years to play four and I have no problem with them doing what is best for them.  Their career is short.

What handcuffs are you referring to? His freshman year he had 2 all conf caliber wrs and an all conf caliber rb... something we have none of this year

The same ones Raiola is referring to.  He won't throw the ball down the field unless his receiver sits down in the zone and waits.  His freshman year, he threw the ball down the field and let his receivers make a play.  It's what successful QB's do in both college and the NFL.

Gebbia was 7 of 15 at one point, that's a 46% completion rate. He finished with a 71.6 QBR. Adrian's was 79.4. Adrian had a higher completion rate and higher average pass per yard. Plus Iowa is the 31st ranked pass defense not including today's game. I watched Gebbia last night too and I'd have stuck with AM.

Gebbia threw for 90 more yards and got the W.  Martinez should throw for a higher percentage because he's constantly throwing the ball to his backs.  As for iowa's pass defense, who in the West has a high octane passing offense?  That's a silly stat to include.

Anyone who watched Gebbia beat the Ducks last night will understand why Mario is a hoax...I have been watching Gebbia the last 2 seasos develop under Mr Smith here in Corvallis thinking wow.. he WAS in Lincoln.. Gebbia looked amazing last night.. so cool.. and TJ was in Lincoln.. Avery Roberts too.. Caleb? yep.. Avery had a couple of Game changing stops last night.. oh well..

Gebbia does not hesistate...he runs or throws.. fast. his line is pretty legit.. I did not see misfires... last night or in other games ... and games in a row.

He was terrible against WAZZU and U-Dub.  He started slow against Cal and picked it up in the second half.  He played well last night.  Let's not give him too much credit yet.

  15. He's played well his last two games.  Before that, I wanted to wring his neck for throwing into triple coverage instead of throwing the ball out of bounds.  The kid learns from his mistakes.  He's learned to throw the ball out of bounds instead of forcing it.  No doubt in my mind he'd run Frost's offense better than anybody on the roster.

The CoachWhisperer idea is funny. Just hire that guy. It's as bad an idea as bringing in assistants to fix the head coach's glaring deficiencies. It's not like he's doing charity work.

Perhaps one day UNICEF will get into NCAA football coaching, but until that day comes we should expect the guy we pay $5 mill to get the job done.

    Nice Joe Dirty reference. :)

Exactly.. Frost is in a catch 22 because he's trying to establish his culture but you have to win for guys to want to be a part of it.. As stupid as it sounds I go back his first year where he just couldn't catch a break, that was an 8 win team and we ended up 5-7 and it's been down hill ever since.

He had upperclassmen with speed and experience.  Unfortunately, he got rid of kids who would be upperclassmen today.
