The backups because they get to play!

After seeing how close NIU played Utah last week, I really doubt we see the back ups.

If we continue our offensive woes, this game could be a dog fight. We'll find out about this team's character tomorrow.

If they come out flat, turn the ball over, get beat at the point of attack, then we know we're in for a long season. If we come out, handle business and win by 3 possessions, then we start to build momentum.

Until they prove otherwise, I'm going to assume this team is going to struggle.

  2. I agree with this.

Saturday's loss was awful and struck a nerve with Husker Nation. That being said, I'm in it for the long haul. I'd much rather give Scott a lifetime contract and watch this thing play out for 20 years than hop on the coaching carousel  5 times in the next 2 decades.

If we can't get this thing figured out with Scott, then I'm not sure we ever will.

They are drunk on thinking "We are Nebraska," and the Nebraska they think they are, that they are told they are, that all the wall art in all the athletic facilities tells them they are, is the 1980s & 1990s teams that won conference & national championships.

They have GOT to stop thinking that way. None of this will get better until they do.

I agree with this comment and that makes me sick to my stomach.

the comment martinez made about distributing the ball to more receivers makes wonder if he is holding onto the ball longer in an attempt to find someone who hasnt had a pass thrown to him.

I don't think Martinez is thinking to himself "Gee, I wonder who hasn't caught a pass today?" when he is making his reads. He's doing exactly what every other quarterback is trying to do when he drops back - find the read. And he's not doing a very good job of it right now.

Two games, two weak performances by the offense in the third quarter. Matt Farniok talked about it at today's presser:

Frost talked about this in his presser today:

Yes, it's a small sample size, and yes, there were extenuating circumstances for the USA third quarter, but through two games, Nebraska has a developing trend of lack of production on offense in the third quarter.

Here are the stats by quarter through two games:

    FIRST QUARTER

    Offensive Points:  14

    Yards:  249

    Plays:  29

    Yards Per Play:  11.8

    Possessions:  6

    Time of Possession:  12:04

    SECOND QUARTER

    Offensive Points:  17

    Yards:  228

    Plays:  47

    Yards Per Play:  6.8

    Possessions:  5

    Time of Possession:  19:12

    THIRD QUARTER

    Offensive Points:  0

    Yards:  76

    Plays:  27

    Yards Per Play:  2.1

    Possessions:  6

    Time of Possession:  11:15

    FOURTH QUARTER

    Offensive Points:  14

    Yards:  183

    Plays:  27

    Yards Per Play:  6.8

    Possessions:  8

    Time of Possession:  11:57

To some, this will mean the opponents are making halftime adjustments and our staff isn't. This isn't true - we've come out with new packages, new blitzes, and new plays after halftime both games.

To me, it boils down to the players' mentality. They let up, as Farniok's quote admits, and start coasting.

We were up 17 points on Colorado at halftime. They had 74 total yards and 0 points. We were up 21-7 against S Alabama early in the third quarter.

Both times the team let off the throttle.

Amazing how this mentality is still an issue.

This team hasn't earned a f#&%ing thing. Colorado was never just going to roll over for them. Going 4-8 in back to back seasons and then taking your foot off the gas after a 17 point lead is how you go 4-8 again.

I'm not sure that this team is better than last year's. Defensively, probably, but we've regressed so much on offense.

This season has started, essentially, exactly the same as last year's team.

    • Last year's opener was cancelled -> This year's opener was too close for comfort (probably the way Akron would have gone)
    • Game 2 was a gut wrenching home loss to the Buffs -> This year, a gut wrenching road loss where we may have had more fans than CU in the stands.

This team still has the mentality of a 4-8 team.

Well it's hard for them to do anything else at a press conference. I agree we have to see it on the field, but would you rather them just not answer questions?

If you'll scroll up, you'll see that my comment was in response to another poster talking about the team's response and their psyche.

I'm talking about the leaders' reactions to a hard loss during the Monday morning press conference. Keeping their heads up and talking about being focused on getting to Indy.

Don't get me wrong, I like the talk, but that is all it is. That's all it has been.

The team's psychology and mental toughness is lightyears ahead of where it was 12 months ago. I think you have to be thankful for that progress.

Is it? Saturday was a classic Husker meltdown against a suspect team with head coach coaching his second game.

Nebraska fans need to accept that we're Virginia Tech, Iowa St. or Mississippi St.

    The sport is regional.

We can't spend our way out of the issues we have; the players can't lift their way into being as talented as other teams. Unless we find 10-12 4* players a year, this is it.

This is just what Nebraska is now, unfortunately.  And really has been for nearly 20 years.

Pretty much exactly where I'm at.
