On one hand, if an appropriate level of respect is to be paid to these institutions, then there has to be a much higher degree of subjective and objective scrutiny applied to them. Matthew Stafford has thrown for a ton of yards, but is he a better QB than Dan Marino? He's 2 years away from passing Marino in total yardage, and now has a ring. Is Eli Manning a better QB than John Elway? If I were a voter, I'd have a difficult time voting those two in, given that while they have 3 Super Bowls between them, they only have 5 Pro Bowls, no All Pro teams, and no regular season MVPs.

On the other hand, it's a museum, put in who you want.

It is hard to compare players from different eras. Stafford has played his whole career in the same conference as Drew Brees, Aaron Rodgers, Russel Wilson, Tom Brady for 2 years, and he was on a garbage team. Do we cut him some slack for having few Pro Bowls and zero All Pros? At the same time, he now has a Super Bowl win in an era where Tom Brady hogged most of them, should that be weighed more? Offenses today are pass heavy, more so than in Marino's era, should they be worth less now? Marino didn't play during the Skip Bayless/Stephen A Smith-argue-about-every-athletes'-merits reality of today, if he had would he be viewed differently? At the end of the day, it's hard to determine if Stafford is as good as Marino (Marino was in his prime when I was young too so he gets the benefit of nostalgia and my less refined eye for scrutinizing), but I do enjoy the conversation.

I'm actually of the mind that HoFs should be much more selective with who they let in, and that the curve that players are graded on should be properly attuned to the era in which they play.

I understand that, the line is always going to be blurry no matter where you cut it off. Here’s a few questions for you though.

What would be your criteria? Would you select the same amount of players from each era? Would it simply be an eye test sort of thing? How would you judge the era to determine if more players should get in?

  3. A little off topic, but I didn’t want to make a new thread and since they’ll be enshrined to start the preseason it kind of counts….

Anyway, this is quite possibly the worst pro football hall of fame class we’ve ever had. That’s not to say that they aren’t worthy, just that all of them would be the fifth guy in a good class. To put them all together in one class and leave out some of the guys that got snubbed is very weird. I think my vote would have been:

    Torry Holt

    Zach Thomas

    Leroy Butler

    Reggie Wayne

    Demarcus Ware

Was the place in Columbus called Drifters? I believe they brew their own root beer in addition to regular beers.

As a side note, my buddy that I brew with did a batch of root beer. It was nasty.

It was from a place called Gottberg. They did have a restaurant called Dusters, but I'm not sure if that's what you're thinking. I don't live in the state anymore so I'm not super familiar with if it's well known or not.

Ok, since you are a fan of root beer, what is your choice for root beer?  A&W, Barqs, or Mug?  Or will you go with some high-end IBC root beer?

We could start an entire thread about this. I have done blind root beer taste tests with my family and friends a few times. I give them samples of 18-22 different brands of root beer and then everyone votes on their favorite. The interesting thing is that the national brands (a&w, Barq's,) always are near the bottom. Generic brands (Shasta or store brands) are middle of the pack and specialty or craft root beers come in at the top. Sprechers brand has won the most times.

  6. With Aaron Dell's cheap shot on Batherson, Brady Tkachuk is our rep at the all-star game which sucks. Brady's fine, but he's a grinder not an all star. Drake has been all-star quality all season and I think will be viewed as a top tier player in a year or two. Playing in the all-star game would have helped with exposing him to fans from outside Canada, feels bad man.

I’m just going to let you look at the charts and think about why you had Oregon as the only Nike school in your example… Oregon should somehow be ranked above all the rest of Nike schools? Why’s this?

Because they are Nike University. They get focus, and almost flagship status. If kids care so much about being at a Nike school, they should be top five every year. That's the point I'm making. We would be a tier 2 or 3 school in Nike's portfolio, we're tier 1 for Adidas. It's not a bad deal for now.

  8. I don't root for, or really appreciate, 'greatness'. I hate seeing the same team win over and over, I don't like dynasties. Jordan's Bulls? Hated them. Brady's Patriots? Hated them. Saban's Tide? Hate them.

Now, if it was a team I supported that won all the time would I hate it? Hopefully some day I'll find out, but since I'm a neutral in every sport except college football and the NHL, I like to see different teams win.

Which suggests the substandard offensive line, unreliable quarterback and questionable play-caller still had the talent to work pretty well for 80 out of 100 yards of football field.

If it's a crime to be optimistic that small changes can make up that difference, I plead guilty.

Yeah, if we had made our field goals we would have been 54 in scoring. Still need to improve in the red zone, but it feels like there is a foundation there. Of course if we had made our field goals we would have won more than three games and we didn't so......

I don't have a drop box at the bottom. Is there anything else I can do?
