  1. Yeah you should have heard Herbstreit and all those other analysts during the USC vs. Penn State game. They just couldn't shut up about how the Pac 10 was 5-0 in bowl games this year and how they are a very underrated conference. They also couldn't pull their love from USC away for more than 10 seconds.

The Pac 10 played no interesting and formidable bowl game short of the Rose Bowl. For crying out loud, Oregon St. only beat Pitt 3-0! That is ridiculously horrible. The Big 12, on the other hand, has 8 teams in bowl games, two in BCS bowls, and is undefeated in the North. The Pac 10, as a whole, is still one of the weaker conferences.

  2. Mendoza didn't get reps because of his inexperience and running power in the Gator Bowl. Helu couldn't get anything going because of his size, and Castille was the only back who seemed to do anything productive in the run game. You don't want to put another running back in when Castille is getting comfortable and making big plays. If Castille could get rid of his fumbilitis (which he did yesterday) I think he should be the premier back. He's got enormous size, strength, and speed. He would have had T.O. jumping like a small kid on Christmas back in the 90's.

Also, Mendoza hasn't really blown us away with his time on the field this year. He's no true Freshman like Ahman Green was. The coaches have talked more about using him at slot receiver due to his size because right now he's not a very formidable ball carrier.

  3. "Thunder and Lightning" did not have a good game in the back field on New Year's Day against the Blackshirts.

"Lightning" aka Spiller, however, made us look like bumbling idiots on special teams, a part of the game we have struggled in most of the year.

  4. 1. Suh

    2. Castille

    3. Henery

    4. Ganz

Ganz mistakes nearly cost Nebraska the game.

I'm sorry but where is Steinkuhler in all of the posts saying that Suh should get the game's MVP? Steinkuhler had a way better first half then Suh did, and Suh didn't really come alive until the second half.

Also, quarterbacks get the mvp because they are the quarterback. If you are another player, you have to have a ridiculously good game to steal the show from the quarterback. Even mediocre play out of your quarterback will get him the MVP. And don't forget, Ganz was responsible for the only two touchdowns we got the entire game. The only other points we had were 4 field goals.

  5. Arguably the most sound, best defensive performance in my eyes the entire season. Forget the 14 points they gave up, that wouldn't have happened had it not been for the offense creating turnovers for Clemson. No turnovers and smart offensive play, this game would have been a shut out or very low scoring game for Clemson.

  6. I got the entire 1995 National Championship Season on DVD, free of commercial breaks, timeout breaks, and everything else. Just every play and all the commentary and extra dvd features you could want.

I plan on watching a game every saturday to get me through the pain of off season. :w00t

  7. So Nebraska pulled out the win today, but I gotta tell you that I'm frustrated with the way our play-calling unfolds every game.

We seem to give out very little vertical threat, and rely a lot on zone-read options and horizontal passing. I think Nebraska had plenty of chances to get more points if they spent less time running. I'm frustrated with our offensive lines inability to open holes for the running game, and I'm tired of seeing the zone read go for little if anything against quality defenses.

I would love to see less spread, less zone-read option, and less blocking scheme screw ups. Barney Cotton coached a strong running team in 2003, so I'm confident he can work out the kinks.

I would like to see more power formations, more devastating vertical passing threats, and more powerful running from Castille. I know Helu had a statistically better year, but I think Castille is the future at Nebraska. He is everything that would have had Tom Osborne jumping like a giddy school boy in the 90's.

Thoughts and opinions? I want thoughts on what you guys want to see/look forward to for future years.

  8. Here is what he said word for word..

"OK, guys. It's time to stop letting Clemson look good. We can't start looking fantastic yet until next year, because people will flip sh#t if we dominate because it's my first year of coaching. Keep the game close, make it look like we struggle at times, but then win like you know we will :horns2 ."

  9. In all fairness, take a look at the change Watson made after half time. We had 20 points in the 3rd quarter. The thing that separates us from the big time though, is our play calling. Watson seems to fall back on zone-read, short horizontal passes and that's not how the big boys do it. I hope you guys caught some of the Penn State vs. USC game. USC is a staple of how the passing game should be done, as is Oklahoma and Texas.

We need more vertical, hard nosed football and less of the attack we saw this season. I hope Bo has some tricks up his sleeve as far as the offense goes for the coming years, because I don't see this "Spest Coast Offense" going very far. (Spest Coast is just a combo of spread and west for those confused).

  10. I think this thread will be very helpful for our Clemson visitors on this board and many other posters who may not completely understand our passion for Husker football and why we treat it the way we do.

Nebraska isn't a very large state in terms of population. Because of this, we are denied the luxuries of other states that have the population and economy to afford pro football teams, baseball teams, basketball teams, and more than one major university. We are so passionate about Husker football and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln because they are our football, baseball, basketball, etc. We have nothing else major to fall back on and come together with as a state. Nothing has been around long enough or been enjoyed as much over the years as Husker football. If we had more major sports, I guarantee the entire state wouldn't be as passionate about Husker football as they are, but it's all we have. That's why Nebraska is so special to us, because no other state has a tradition of one major sports team that has captured the hearts of an entire state like the Huskers have.

Most Husker fans grow up breathing the Husker aroma. Most of our families are born and raised Nebraskans, and the tradition of Husker football has been passed down for generations. I, personally, was born in 1989 and grew up right in the thick of arguably the greatest decade of football by any college football team ever. Three National Championships and a 1995 squad that blew our minds just fueled my passion.

I hope this clears up any questions that visitors might have. Feel free to add something to the post if you feel I forgot it. In short, I just wanted to explain to everyone why Nebraska fans are the way they are. We have nothing that unifies us like Husker football, and we don't have the population or economy that could support any other major sports team right now. All we have is the Huskers, and that's why we are Nebraska.

  11. I will be at clancys at 114 and dodge, wearing clemson coat. I am confident in watching the husker fan meltdown. I remember against texas when james brown did his thing to the huskers. there were a grand toatal of 13 people left at scorecard halfway through 4th quarter(including staff). Quite a decline from over 500 at start of game.

I will be there, will you?

You have not lived in nebraska since 93. If you even clapped for another team the put their fist in your face. My standard reply (which i used a few times) was if you hit me, I will not hit back. That way it is an assault, not a fight, and you (the deranged fan) will be arrested.

We had a nice thing going with all the Clemson fans here, and now you just took a little something away from it. Can you blame Nebraska for it's passion? We haveno pro football team, pro baseball team, pro basketball team, or anything else major (in terms of sports). The University of Nebraska-Lincoln is our football, our basketball, our baseball, etc. People just can't seem to understand that for one reason or another.

I will not be at Clancy's on 114 Dodge on Thursday, I will be at home enjoying the game with family and friends the way it should be done. I hope you feel real cool issuing an assertive attack on Husker fans to come out there and screw with you (and don't say that's not what you're saying, because you are specifically calling out Husker fans to come find you in a BAR of all places).

Grow up, have some class, and be like the rest of your Clemson brothers on this board and talk real football. Don't waste our time with petty challenges.

  12. I didn't read all the posts on here, but unless somebody else got this I think I ousted a lot of people.

The entire 1995 National Championship Season on DVD set. No commercial breaks, no waiting for timeouts to get over, just play after play of the greatest team in football history.

  13. If we're away we should wear ALL WHITES!!!! :sarcasm

:yeah ...except minus the sarcasm.. <_<

    The all whites suck.

    HTH.

Seriously, I don't remember when the last time was Nebraska wore all whites before last year's debacle in Buffalo. But because of my lack of memory, as far I'm concerned we are 0-1 in all whites and we suck @$$ when we wear them.

  14. Of all the reasons I have heard, I think the most hurtful was that it had to do with rape/sexual assault.

I don't remember where I read it (I thought it was on this board), but I almost blew up. How dare anybody accuse Glenn of rape/sexual assault when there is absolutely no evidence to support this. Plus, if it were some sort of felony, it would be in the news without a doubt.

Again, I don't remember where I read this (it was on some message board), but it was completely disgraceful to even bring up without any hard evidence.

  15. "Speed" is just a term popularly coined by ESPN and it's analysts. Statistically speaking, the actual speed (in 40 yard dash time) is just as good as any other team. SEC/ACC teams aren't just automatically "faster" on defense because they are in the SEC/ACC. It all comes down to execution, and SEC/ACC defenses appear to fly to the ball.

Here's the fault though, which is the huge debate. Are SEC/ACC offenses bad which makes the defenses look great, or are the SEC/ACC defenses just that good? I tend to think it's a little bit of both. Obviously, nobody in the ACC is as powerful offensively as Oklahoma or Texas, for that matter. I would seriously doubt anybody in the SEC is that great offensively either, even Florida.

Personally, I feel Clemson's defense is ranked so high because they haven't played any overly explosive offenses. If Clemson were in the Big 12, they would not be ranked in the top 40 defensively. The matchup between NU-CU and OU-FU is going to say a lot.

  16. It's already been simplified? I don't think you would want to do that any further or you might as well go ahead and change the offense.

    I agree with this.

Think about it, before we played Missouri we were running a very complicated multi-set offense. We had power I, shotgun, ace, and many others. Callahan's playbook was 800,000,000 pages long and was very complicated, which forced players to have to tirelessly work with the playbook to understand the offense (perhaps players were so worried about the offensive scheme they forgot fundamentals?) Watson retained a lot of Callahan's playbook and kept going at it with the West-Coast multi-set offense.

After Missouri, we primarily switched to shotgun spread formations. I can't even tell you the last time I saw the power I on the field when it wasn't 3rd or 4th and short. I know we have done power I but it has become very rare. Even with the shotgun spread attack, however, players need to know the playbook and the importance of timing (which is a key component of the spread offense).

Dumbing down the offense (for lack of a better term) would result in us changing our offensive scheme again. I don't think their is any offense that could be easier to run then perhaps a power run game, but even power run option games means players need to understand schemes, strong blocking, and you have to have a quarterback to run it well.

TL:DRSimply put, dumbing down the offense more would result in a change of offense, and I don't think there is any offense that can be learned simply. Put players in when they are ready and understand, because this type of offense doesn't have the ability to include a lot of young players.

  17. Another spot on take Kent.

And Texas Tech not getting a BCS Bowl is a load to, and invite for Harrel to the Hypsman was crap.

There is a team that never gets any respect even when they are winning.

If I'm not mistaken the Big 12 is only allowed to send two teams to BCS bowl games, and Texas and Oklahoma are much better teams than Texas Tech.

Tech may have beaten Texas, but we all know Texas and OU are the better teams. A team thats gets blown out as badly as Tech did against OU doesn't deserve a bcs bowl bid. (It's my honest opinion, especially after the 2001 season when the fuffaloes ripped us and then we went to the national championship game)

  18. So is the team leaving on the 27th? That seems later to me then in other years we played in a Jan 1 bowl. I am sure some of the players will like to have x-mas with their familes, but what about the ones that can't go home. I would think they would probably prefer to be in Florida.

The thing about football is that it takes precedence over a lot of things. On Thanksgiving, for example, UNL had Wednesday through Friday off from school that week for break. The team was forced, however, to stay on campus for practice and preparation until Saturday after the Friday game. Many of the Huskers said they postponed family things until the game was over that Friday after Thanksgiving, so I expect they will do the same with Christmas things until after the bowl game.

  19. 1995-96 Fiesta Bowl.

Florida Gator "Fun and Gun" offense. Nebraska was a 5 point underdog to the offense that "couldn't be stopped". :bonez

Here's how it goes these days. Big 12 offenses are great, defense lacks. SEC offenses suck, defenses are great. I think it's going to be a close game, but I think we might know by the end of the first half who is going to win. Either OU will be dominating offensively or Florida will be dominating OU's offense.

  20. This is why sportswriters not associated with Nebraska should not cover Nebraska.

He obviously didn't know about the giant problems Nebraska had at defense last year, and Gill couldn't have righted the defensive woes like Pelini did. Pelini may have fewer years of general "coaching" experience, but he has been the DC at 3 major BCS schools: Nebraska, OU, and LSU. It's ridiculous to claim that Gill would have been the better choice. Gill was an "assistant" when Nebraska won 3 national titles, but Pelini was a coordinator during his dominant championship run at LSU.

Gill may have gotten a good Buffalo team to start winning, but he hasn't proven yet that he can maintain winning teams. If he tanks it next year and Buffalo goes 6-6 or worse, will there still be all this talk about Gill being the possible better hire? I don't think so.

Given Nebraska's defensive woes and lack of passion, Pelini is the obvious better choice. Gill as head coach this year? I don't see us going better then 6-6.

i wouldnt go that far...... you have no idea who turner brings in as defensive coordinator. and I think its clear turner is a fine coach.

i'm not saying Turner is a bad coach, and the 6-6 record might be a stretch, but clearly the Pelini hire came from a defensive standpoint. I don't think TO would risk hiring Gill as HC and wait for him to make his defensive coordinator choice. Pelini was brought in with a strong focus on defense and Pelini is a guy with proven results. Given Pelini's defensive knowledge, he is the safer choice.

  21. This is why sportswriters not associated with Nebraska should not cover Nebraska.
