  1. Can you tell me what you mean by 'peaked'? Because I don't really know what that even means.

Which Williams are you talking about for the 3 deep at DT? Josh Williams is an end and Kevin Williams is an incoming frosh.

Randle has pretty much tapped what? He's going to be a redshirt soph next year, there aren't many redshirt freshman that are every down players. Ankrah is also going to be a redshirt soph to say he won't get any better at reads and technique and that he has 'peaked' is nonsense. To say any player has 'peaked' as a freshman or sophomore is pretty silly.

So which one of your buddies plays on the D-line that has you all up in a tissy and trying to figure out the exact meaning of every typed word?

But, its a fact that not every player is NFL caliber and while we'd like to have 16 guys that are first team all American we don't. Some guys aren't going to get much better athletically than they are now. Their bodies matured earlier than guys around them in high school. We all know that's partly why they dominate at that level. When they recruited them the did so on the idea that they would still physically mature even more and through SC work their abilities would instead of go up a click go up two or three clicks because they still had room to grow. They simply didn't grow like they thought. Yes they''ll be in better shape and leaner and some quicker. . but not as they projected. That growth comes in year 1 and tapers in year 2 in a large majority of college athletes. After that continued development comes in technique. Some of these guys. . all they had to gain was technique and its not enough at this point. Its noting new, but I say it probably happens more now that high schools have training programs and kids practice football year round. I will also say we are blessed with the fact that Bo and Carl get more from "average" D-1 talent than 80% of the coaches out there.

For example, Randle is near as good as he's going to get athletically. Physically he was more mature than what they expected. He didn't have the extra growth they thought and so as a result the things they want to do with his body haven't benefited him like they thought. He's not going to be a guy who goes through major transformations any further. His chance to become better will be based solely on if he can master a skill set now. A guy like Rome or even a Justin Jackson my pass him up. Ankra is a bit the same. He was a beast compared to other incoming freshman....guess what...he's no longer light years ahead. For lack of a better term..his progress (based on crystal ball projections) has stalled. Or at the very least has not multiplied like first thought.

You realize the coaches have projected depth charts usually 2-3 years out right? Sure..competition is open 100% and anyone at any time can start or be at any spot on the depth chart. They also chart out where they hope people will be in year 2, 3, 4 or 5 of college so they can recruit for needs. That changes as their evaluations of the players change and as natural selection in sports runs its course. I just so happen know where a few of those guys sit in those evaluations at this time. Some of that is from former players who watch practice, some from a conversation with a coach or one of my friends who hangs with the AD on game days. It still can change an is always fluid because kids are kids and people surprise us both good and bad. But there is a reason (actually many reasons) we take lots of O-line and D-line guys. They don't develop ideally and we don't have enough bodies for the number of spots.

I have coached for 10 years and I have never heard or seen a depth chart that is 2-3 years out. Never. I have seen one year out, thats it. Then I have heard lots of "there is a chance this guy will be good for us in 3 years" talk.

As far as 9 guys playing, I think what is being said is that you there are so many decent guys that you dont need two of them taking 100% of the snaps. Now what you said about guys being studs as seniors in high school and then basically not getting any better, that happens all the time! That is why rivals is such a crap shoot.

Last fall 2010 TG showed me their recruiting needs along with a projected depth chart for 2011 and 2012 based on what would ideally happen. Some was based on 2010 and some was pulling from thin air a bit. (And of course it changed over the course of the year. And while I haven't seen it since then I've been privy to 3rd party conversations that discuss holes in team make up.) After that there was an outline for need in 2013 and people more or less listed based on the previous two in slots. A few of those did have guys as Freshman in 2010 listed ahead of guys that were one or two and would be Sr. or Jrs. based on how they thought they would develop. Its obviously very objective and was based on how guys were currently doing and how they intended to develop them. I realize its nothing set in stone. It was a snapshot of what they needed to do over the course of the next 3-4 seasons. So. . call it a recruiting chart if you rather, but it was talked about as a projected depth chart. At that time players I wont mention were talked about where they were if they were ahead or behind of where they wanted etc and what the anticipated "ceiling" for some of those guys. Again. . its all looking into the magic eight ball but you as a coach probably also have a good idea when a guy appears to flat line or peak in your system. We talked about the number of guys they like to have in each grouping and guess what. . .at the time they were adding bodies to the D-line group based on the idea they had several "role" players and needed more every down guys. Say what you want about the guy as a WR coach but TG had a very good handle on the RC end of things based on what input the coaches were giving him and what they assumed would be needs from this non existent chart.

This isn't a new idea or practice to do this and its done at colleges besides NU so I have no idea why you as a coach wouldn't be trying to do it as well unless you're at a level where you don't recruit such as high school or have to take what falls into your lap like a state or JR college.

Recruiting chart makes a ton more sense to me. Sorry, I was not trying to be a jerk before, its just not anything I had ever seen.

  2. Just speaking from a teaching/education standpoint, there is nothing the NCAA can do IF any class was taken at an accredited school, Junior College or online institution.

Now, if it was not one of those, then there is a gray area.

I was told where Jackson took the courses they are accredited.

That is a good sign then.

I wonder if this is connected to the rumor that the Big Red Breakfasts will be going away?

I think this is a better idea then the breakfasts actually.

  5. I remember seeing his JC and high school film. I have looked at lots of film in my time as a coach. There have been a few kids on defense that are freaks. He was one of them. Some kids are what I call "slimey" It is a compliment, it means they never really get blocked and they seem to always step the right way.

  6. Just speaking from a teaching/education standpoint, there is nothing the NCAA can do IF any class was taken at an accredited school, Junior College or online institution.

Now, if it was not one of those, then there is a gray area.

  7. No, you can react anyway you want. To me, it seems odd that people would react in an upset way. Just like to you, it seems odd that I would laugh at it.

It probably just means that I am schizophranic or something! (see now, some people will laugh at this while others will freak out about making a joke about mental illness)

  8. I am not defending him, I dont like him, I never have. I was defending having a sense of humor. I thought people were acting like this was some kind of sin.

To me, this would be like telling a joke: "How do you change a dishwasher into a snowblower?"

    "You give her a shovel"

    ha ha ha

Now, you can laught at it cause its funny or you can get mad because its "sexiest".

  9. It is not so much that people are defending Riley as it is people bringing up the idea that Husker fans dont need to freak out or get sooooo defensive about things.

I hate Riley and his articles are terrible (to me) but this is a joke. It is like a Bill Simmons draft diary where he rips on teams after team and GM after GM, its just jokes.

  10. I hate to say it, but this is why other teams fans get annoyed with other fan bases. In this case, NU.

    Couple things

    1. This article is a joke, it is written almost like an Onion article.

    2. NU fans do not need to "educate" all other fans all the time. Who cares if Wisconsin has or more less wins then NU recently. There is no need to go "stats guy" on everyone.

  11. Locker is a very good qb.

Having watched him play two times in the last 12 games, I can say that this is incorrect. I have no idea where all the hype came from about this guy. He is inaccurate, he is fragile, he is indecisive and he is easily rattled. Had our defense actually given a [Mark May] about playing in the Holiday Bowl they would have shut him down worse than they did.

Fragile? I would not say that, he got killed for 4 years and really did not miss to many starts. He had some terrible players on his team for most of that time. Had he gone to USC during those same 4 years, he would have been all people talked about. I am not sure if people know the pounding he took every game. His teammates sucked, I mean, it would be like me and you being his WR's and 5 guys from this site being his O-line.

I said fragile because he seemed to get pretty dinged by what I thought was a relatively normal hit in the Holiday Bowl.

The far bigger sin, as far as the NFL is concerned, is his inaccuracy. No matter who his WRs are, he has to throw a catchable ball, and he fails to do that far too often.

I do agree with that accuracy part, but honestly, like I said, he was throwing to me and you WHILE running for his life. Maybe I am looking at it differntly but I think its amazing that his accuracy was as good as it was. He did not even have a decent coach until two years ago.

  12. Locker is a very good qb.

  13. How quickly we forget his input in this. I'm sorry in advance.

First off, I forgot that KU had 76 points with 11 minutes left, WOW, that is all I can say. I remember the BCers saying things like "The defense is so bad, so the offense feels like the have to score every time they have the ball, that is why the offense struggles" Huh? I know the team I coach tries to score every time we have the ball too, but its not because we have a bad defense, its because that what offeneses are supposed to do.

Secondly, I am not worried about Beck until he gives me something to worry about.

  14. Billy C’s four recruiting classes included 14 in-state kids (04 – 5, 05 – 3, 06 – 4, 07 – 2).

    Bo’s first four recruiting classes included 14 in-state kids (08 – 5, 09 – 2, 10 – 4, 11 – 3).

Maybe Billy C didn’t bring in as many in-state walk-ons but to say he didn’t sign in-state kids and then turn around and say Bo does is crazy. The facts don’t lie though because they signed the same amount of in-state kids.

FWIW: One of Bo’s signees was offered by our AD and another has a father on the staff.

What I am trying to say is that Clownahan had the chance to offer this kid, who is good but didnt and he was right here. 52 miles from campus. Taking Nebraska kids is great but they better be good. This is a case of just a huge miss.

Then the walk-on aspect is another story, its not even so much that Cantcoachahan wasnt taking walk-ons, he was, he just was not practicing them.

  15. I think they point people are trying to make is that seeing an adult take a little kids spot to get an autograph is lame.

Maybe they should have a kids fan day. 16 and under of course even with that you would see the crazy older fans stuffing their kids with things to sign for their "Husker Room" at home.

  16. If you were being recuited for college football, what would sell you? What are the 5 things or so that would make you sign with a school?

    For me

    1. The coolness of the school, for instance, U of South Florida seems like it would be a great place to live for 5 years but its not UF or FSU.

    2. Location: Maybe not that its close to home but maybe its just that the location rocks.

    3. Girls/Friends I meet while being recruited.

    4. Coaches: I have coached for a long time now, you basically have 3 types of coaches. Fun joking coach, serious all the time coach, old school coach with a heart of gold. At the D1 level, most of the guys are very good at what they do then there are a few that are elite.

    5. Life after Football: I look at this two ways, the first being the degree, I mean, Stanford, Northwestern, Ivy League, nuff said. The second part, can you stay in that state and be a hero. In Nebraska, if you play football here and are even just kind of known, you pretty much can get every job you apply for, you can tell stories about the "good old days" on your sales trips or radio gigs, you are usually going to be okay.

    What about you guys?

  17. This is where texting, facebook and twitter have changed recruiting. These kids are basically already friends even though there is a chance that Diggs never met Rose.

When they do hang out on a visit, well, they dont have to start off from scratch they will already have tons to talk about and joke about.

I would rank texting, facebook and twitter probably just as high as girls now. Of course, nothing will be location, define that as you will, either location to home or location of campus.

  18. I heard on 1620 (USC) that they might not be having the Big Red Breakfasts anymore. I have never been to one and I would never go, normally I am all for all the changes that Bo and the staff/TO make but doesnt this one seem like it might be a bad move?

I never cry about the changes because I never care and I don't care about this one but it just seems like lots of people go to them.
