Gators show interest in 4-star Ross

    Video of Ross in action

Talk about it in Inside The Double T

It has been several years since Florida has been seriously involved with a prospect from Daytona Beach (Fla.) Mainland. Actually, the year was 2005, Urban Meyer's first year in Gainesville, that the Gators were able to land a player from the powerhouse program.

That year the Gators signed cornerback Avery Atkins and tight end Brian Ellis.

After failing to qualify coming out of high school, Ellis never made it to Gainesville. On the other hand, Atkins went on to start at the University of Florida before being released from UF in the summer of 2006. Not long afterward, he met a tragic end due to a combination of ecstasy intoxication and carbon monoxide poisoning.

Now, another Buccaneer is starting to make a name for himself.

O.J. Ross is currently rated as a four-star prospect by Rivals.com. The No. 43 ranked wide receiver in the nation.

Though Mainland has sent quite a few of its players to the next level over the years, including Antonio Bell (NEB), Cruz Barrett (NEB), Kirby Watson (MAR) and Tony Wilson (UGA), none of them have played to the level of Atkins.

Ross hopes to break that streak, and with good reason.

"Avery is my cousin," explained Ross. "He was a big role model for me. He still is my role model. I learned a lot about football and recruiting from him and I want to use what he taught me to help me be a good player to honor him. I look up to him."

    So far, so good.

As a junior the 5-foot-10, 170-pound speedster led the area with 34 catches for 693 yards and 10 touchdowns while being named first team All-Area by the Daytona Beach News-Journal and honorable mention All-State in Class 5A.

Despite what can only be described as an up-and-down stay in Gainesville by his late cousin, Ross still calls the Gators his favorite football team.

"I'm a fan of Florida," said Ross. "That's always been my number-one team. I've always watched them. I've always followed them. I've been there."

This past week, UF defensive coordinator Charlie Strong became one of the many college coaches to venture over to Florida's east coast this spring to check in on Ross.

According to Ross, Kentucky, Texas Tech, Michigan, Arkansas, Duke, Tulane among others have joined the Gators on the Mainland campus.

Though UF was the childhood favorite, they aren't currently leading the pack.

"Florida's interested in me," proclaimed Ross, "but they haven't offered. I have offers from Texas Tech, Arkansas and Ole Miss this spring. My top three are Arkansas, Michigan and FIU. I like Arkansas, Michigan and Florida International. I've talked to the coach from Arkansas before, he's real cool. I like coach (Rod) Smith at Michigan. FIU is the local school. Close to home and a chance to play. If Florida offers I'm very interested in them."

This summer Ross says that his plans are to camp at both Florida and Georgia.

  2. “I have 23 offers, “ says Koenig, “I like six right now in no order, Tennessee, Oklahoma State, Missouri, Nebraska, Auburn and Ole Miss.”

Koenig said he wants to visit Big 12 schools Nebraska, Oklahoma State and Missouri this summer.

    Huskers A Surprise Offer

“I like Nebraska’s tradition like the national championships. I’m going to take a visit there this summer on vacation. Nebraska has been recruiting me for a while about a few months. I was surprised to get an offer from them. My coach sent tapes to Nebraska and Missouri and they both replied back with an offer.” Koenig said

“I like Nebraska’s offense, running game schemes and stuff like that. I don’t hear from Nebraska much but they are still interested in me. They might be coming down here for the spring.” Koenig added

    Likes Missouri’s Spread Offense

“I like Missouri’s spread offense,” Koenig said, “Again I like their running schemes. When I looked on the internet, I really like how the campus is put together and stuff like that.” Koenig said

“Josh Henson (Missouri) has already been down here. I like Coach Henson he sounds like a good coach when I talk to him. He told me what they (Missouri) were going to be doing and how I would fit in there. I’m going to make it to Missouri this summer, make the whole trip and see the teams around there.” Koenig said

Koenig comments on his spring trip to Oklahoma State’s spring game visit.

“I liked Stillwater,” says Koenig, “Everything was close together like all the facilities are close to the campus, like when I want to study business it was right across the street from the stadium and the dorms.”

“I like coach Wickline he just left from here, he came down Friday. I like how he talked about Oklahoma State’s spread offense.” Koenig said

“One key thing Oklahoma State said I could redshirt, but they need tackles and I would have a chance to be a backup in case one gets hurt. I’ve been to Miami and Tennessee and seen some of the offensive line personal, Oklahoma State offensive line (players) looked better, physically in shape. They (Oklahoma State) looked thinner and stronger than Miami and Tennessee. Miami’s offensive lineman looked huge but not in shape.” Koenig said

    Mississippi On My Mind

“I went to Ole Miss on spring break while we were passing thru on our way home from Oklahoma State.” Koenig said, “I don’t know much about them we didn’t tour the facilities or anything, but I did like the campus.”

“I told the Ole Miss coaches that we checked out the campus and city and told them I would like to visit them summer. They were all excited about that.” Koenig said

“I’ve never seen them (Auburn)” said Koenig, “The only thing I’ve seen was their stadium and that was online. Auburn seems like they really like me too. I’m going to check them out this summer.”

    Tennessee Pushing Hard

“I’ve been to Tennessee,” Koenig said, “I like their facilities they are getting a new weight room. They have all new coaches which are pretty cool, they come from the NFL.

“Coach Gran came down here and checked me out at practice he already offered me, (Gran) was checking out some other players on the team, but they really like me. Tennessee said I could play full time early they are losing tackles five seniors are leaving next year. Auburn said I could play early too.”

  3. ESPN Commentary on Nebraska's chances at the North

Nebraska (Nov. 14, at Kansas; Nov. 21, Kansas State; Nov. 27, at Colorado): The Cornhuskers could be putting the finishing touches on their first Big 12 title game appearance since 2006 with a fast finish. It will be tough, considering the Cornhuskers allowed a school record 76 points in their last trip to Lawrence. Nebraska has toyed with Kansas State in recent seasons, averaging 64.5 points in their last two games. Additionally, this will be the first head-coaching matchup between old rivals Bo Pelini and Bill Snyder. And the Cornhuskers should bring confidence into the Colorado game considering they have won six of their last eight games there. A 2-1 record or better in these games likely will push the Cornhuskers into the championship game.

  4. For much of his life, football didn't interest Owamagbe Odighizuwa.

He grew up playing soccer in Nigeria, and by the time he reached junior high in the David Douglas School District, he was more into track and field.

"I just didn't want to play football," he said.

But he finally decided to give football a try in the eighth grade, and a few years later, the 6-foot-3, 240-pound David Douglas junior defensive end is one of the most coveted college recruits in the nation.

"It's been really cool. It's been exciting," Odighizuwa said. "I'm just taking it all in."

David Douglas coach Dan Wood said Odighizuwa -- known as "Owa" at the school -- has received scholarship offers from 15 schools, including high-profile programs USC, Florida, Louisiana State, Tennessee and Notre Dame. Every school in the Pacific-10 Conference, except for Washington State and Arizona, has offered.

Scout.com and Rivals.com give Odighizuwa four stars. Rivals rates him the No. 10 defensive end in his class; Scout has him at No. 13.

"I've never had a youngster recruited to this level," said Wood, the Scots' coach since 1990.

Strong, fast and explosive, the chiseled Odighizuwa is a dominant force on defense. He was voted the Mt. Hood Conference defensive player of the year as a junior, when he had 22 tackles for loss, including 18 sacks.

"He's a nightmare, is what he is," Central Catholic coach Steve Pyne said. "He's just as strong as you can get. He's going to be a great pass-rush defensive end at the college level."

Pyne compared Odighizuwa to Central Catholic graduate Kevin Frahm, a sophomore defensive end at Oregon State.

"I don't know that he's as polished in terms of skills as Kevin was coming out of high school, but he's certainly athletically superior to Kevin," Pyne said. "As soon as he learns to play with more of a plan ... he's got future star written all over him."

Wood and his coaches first got an idea about Odighizuwa's potential a year ago when he participated in a camp at Oregon State.

"Their coach said, 'This guy's the real deal. He's going to get recruited by USC and whoever,'" Wood said. "I started thinking, 'Well, here we go.'"

Oregon State, Oregon, Stanford and Notre Dame were hot on Odighizuwa's trail during his junior season, and the national interest spiked in January after he excelled at the U.S. Army Junior Combine in Texas. He dominated one-on-one pass rushing drills and was chosen the camp's defensive MVP.

"From what the coaches said, and other people said, I was beating them up pretty bad," said Odighizuwa, whose name is pronounced "oh-a-MAH-bay oh-dee-ga-ZOO-a."

Said Wood: "Once he did that, it wasn't a week, and I had schools that I hadn't communicated with faxing in verbal offers."

Odighizuwa, who turned 17 in April, has been barraged with phone calls and is in regular communication with Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis, Florida coach Urban Meyer and Tennessee coach Lane Kiffin, according to Wood.

It has been a whirlwind 2009 considering Odighizuwa is on the basketball and track teams (he runs the 100 meters in 11.9 seconds) and helps his mother, A.B., take care of his three younger brothers. But Odighizuwa, who has a 3.4 grade-point average, is doing his due diligence.

"When Florida, Notre Dame and Stanford came in, he had three pages of questions typed out, and he interviewed all of them," Wood said. "He's sizing up the college coaches."

Odighizuwa, who attended Oregon's spring game Saturday, said he plans to take all five of his college visits before making a decision.

"I don't have all five of them down, but I know for sure I'm going to take a visit to Florida," he said. "I'm still thinking about USC and Stanford."

Is proximity to home a factor in his decision?

"It matters, but in the end, it's whatever makes me and my family happy," said Odighizuwa, who was born in Ohio and lived in Nigeria (ages 3-8) and Virginia before moving to Portland as a fourth-grader.

"The bling doesn't matter to him," Wood said. "He's a meat-and-potatoes guy. He's really humble. It's so cool to see it happening to the right kind of person and the right kind of family. He's been raised right. My deal is I don't want to screw it up, and he goes to the right place."

  5. "In fact, Alex and their oldest brother, Lucson, both were friends and teammates of Miami lineman Bryan Pata, whose murder two years ago remains unsolved. For that alone, the boys' mother has said she won't endorse Jeff attending UM."Link

Scratch Miami off the list, 48 to go.

  6. We all here at THE BOARD have our dream team recruits. Alas for the majority of these players it is that, a dream, until those wins continue to pile up(which I believe will happen with Bo). All the players you listed would be stellar big time contributors to DONU and would be a hell of a sweet dream to wake up to in February.

Mine include Jordan James out of Cali at RB. GREAT speed and a better than average chance at landing him.

Uko at DT would be sweet but no chance in Hades, as well as Hayes Pullard as the only LB we take again no chance.

At DE it's Eric Martin's high school teammate Ronald Powell and Odighizuwa just for the sake of trying to say that.

    WR Darius White nuf said.

I am a glass half full kind of guy, but if we land even one of these guys I will run butt ass naked to the Stadium from my place(about 50 blocks) cause it aint gonna happen, but we can dream like the thread says.

I just posted some new info on James and it does not look too promising. Appears to have a heavy Oklahoma lean.

Here is some video though video clips.

Oh yea glm you had a great idea with Giovanni Bernard. Looks good on video and I would love to have in-roads to St. Thomas Aquinas.

  7. "Notre Dame offered me," James said. "To be honest, I don't know a lot about them but I'm very interested in them. Distance for me will play no role at all and I definitely want to check them out and learn more about the school.

"My coach told me that Oklahoma wants me to call them tomorrow and said they could be offering as well. That's another school I like a lot and I'm anxious to find out more about. Things are going great right now and I'm excited to take my official visits and play this out."

Although it's early, James said he has a good idea of what five schools he wants to take visits to in the fall.

"My list could change, but right now, my five visits would be to Arizona, Notre Dame, Florida, Stanford and if they offer, Oklahoma," James said. "I'll also take unofficial visits to UCLA and Cal since they're both in-state schools. That's my top seven right now.

"Like I said, distance will not play a role, I'll go wherever the best fit for me is. I'm just looking for the school where I'll fit in well with the offense, where I can play early and where I'll be comfortable for the next four years of my life."

This was reported on another blog (link). The link also has some more information on him.

  8. Hello,

I'm new to the board, but have been a lurker for some time. I really like the input ya'll give here on recruits and was curious if ya'll could give some insight on a debate me and my friends always have? We call it our recruiting dream where we go down the list of prospects and see which one's we like the most and which one's are the most likely to commit.

    Here's my list

    QB

1st Choice: Dallas LLoyd- the kid reminds me a lot of OSU's Zac Robinson, nice arm and mobile.

2nd Choice: Sean Robinson- very strong and mobile, but looks to have an awkward throwing motion

    Likely Commit: Sean Robinson

    RB

1st James McConico- strong slashing runner that can run in between the tackles. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xf38wcF51FA

2nd Choice: Deontae Cooper-Can do everything.

Not really a fan of Lache, he is a nice compliment back but needs a power back like Lendale White and Bush

    WR

    1. Kyle Prater-can catch anything from here to Jupiter.

    2. Chris Hawkins-fast and physical. http://rivals.yahoo.com/video/recruiting-f...hlights-1-49088

    3. O.J. Ross- Can an improvise a play.

4.Keeston Terry- Extremely Fluid for a bigger guy, if he can improve his explosion a real gem.

    OL

    1. Nick Demien- Just mean, great feet

    2. Andrew Rodriguez

    3. Mike Moudy- Maintains blocks extremely well, good feet movement

    4. Dillon Bonnell- Great feet if he can add strength can be dominate

    DE

    1. Owamagbe Odighizuwa-"OO" Could power the world with this kids motor.

    2. Jackson Jeffcoat- Seems extremely fluid and polished, but yet extremely physical.

    3. Ronald Powell- Based on his ESPN info seems legit.

    DT

    1. J.R. Ferguson- He screams DT to me, and believe he could be a good one.

    2. Jay Guy- Kid is mean.

    2. Elliot Porter- Haven't seen video but stats don't lie. He has found a way to be productive.

    LB

    1. Jeff Luc- devastating tackler, with adequate cover skills.

    2. Josh Shirley- Adds some depth to SAM, a playmaker at LB that could put his hand down on passing situations. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=prxMsemmsFc

    CB

    1. Joshua Shaw-physical tackler and great coverage skills.

    2. Tony Hurd- feisty player.

    DB

    1. Dion Bailey- amazing cover skills, needs to learn to hit though.

    2. Marquis Flowers- A hard hitting safety with great athleticism.

I know that was pretty long but as you can tell my friends and I really have to have our facts when we go at it, but let me know what ya'll think.

    Regards

Well we've already nabbed WR Terry OL Rodriguez and Moudy so there's three of the guys you've mentioned. Plus we have a verbal from CB Sloan so there's 4 in total.

The '10 class, from everything I've heard, will be kinda small, around 15-17 players so figuring 16, minus the four already committed = 12.

Jeff Luc...I think we have about a .0005% chance at signing him. More than likely he'll stay close to home and sign with a Florida school, or at the least stay in the south.

Jackson Jeffcoat...from what I've read the Huskers have even less of a shot with him than Luc.

Deontae Cooper...Looks like a very good kid from the west coast, I think our chances with him are slightly better than with Luc and Jeffcoat-but that ain't saying much.

    The others you've mentioned... :dunno

Yea I know we have very little chance with a lot of these guys, but this was just a "dream team. <_< " Just guys I thought are amazing prospects, and you are right we nabbed some so I guess me and Bo are thinking alike :clap

  9. Not bad, I really like Lloyd also at QB. Question though, you would take Robinson over Gabbert?

Honestly, I'm actually surprised someone likes Lloyd too. I thought people were just going to follow the stars. The kid has undeniable grit, athleticism, and a good arm. When I watched his tape for the first time I thought this kid operates extremely well without the aid a good oline (in the last half of his highlights he was getting hit every single play, and still performing). I was curious why he doesn't have more stars your thoughts?

    Regards

  10. If potential RBs hear that Aaron Green is high on us (2011), it could scare some off.

I wouldn't want any RB who is scared of competition that is a recruiting class behind him. Wouldn't say much for his confidence.

Agreed. All of these kids who are being recruited by big schools know what to expect, and I don't think any of of the good ones expect anything to be handed to them.

  11. Not bad, I really like Lloyd also at QB. Question though, you would take Robinson over Gabbert?

I personally believe that if things start clicking with Cody Green and Gabbert were to commit he may never see the field. Gabbert has wits and could potentially excel in the short and intermediate passing game, but is not a game changer in my opinion. While it appears Robinson has an awkward throwing motion, if his passing game breaks down he could easily rely on his feet (look at how far that got Tebow). I think Robinson could potentially push Green more, if not take over, if he were to sign. Bottom line I think he has more potential than Gabbert, whether that potentially is reached with him playing QB or something else remains to be seen.

  12. MAY 22, 2009. PREP STAR

ZACK MC CRAY, DE, 6-3, 240, 4.7, LYNCHBURG (BROOKVILLE), VIRGINIA

Zach said he has offers from Virginia, Wake Forest, Nebraska, Virginia Tech, Boston College, Maryland, North Carolina, Duke, North Carolina State, Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU, UCLA and Alabama

    Trimmed List A Little

“Not 100 percent right now, I’m starting to narrow it down with the schools. I’ll probably narrow it down to four to six teams. I have four set right now, Alabama, LSU, North Carolina State and Virginia Tech. I thank God every day for it (scholarship offers). My parents are excited that they don’t have to pay for my college.” Mc Cray said

    Surprise Husker Offer

“I was pretty surprised to get an offer from them (Nebraska). It was really cool I mean I didn’t know they would have any interest for me being on the east coast. I sure would consider visiting Nebraska to lean little more about them and the program.” Mc Cray said

“Nebraska’s offer is pretty recent,” says Mc Cray, “I’m been trying to get in touch with them. I tried to call a couple of times we’ve been calling back and forth but I haven’t had much luck.” Mc Cray added

“I’ve been to campus at North Carolina a couple of times and talked to Coach Davis,” Mc Cray said, “He turned that program around they (North Carolina) is a upcoming program. I really do think in a couple of years they will be playing in a national championship game. They are getting good recruits and it’s close to home.”

“I went to North Carolina and Virginia Tech game last year. It was really cool the fans came out, great fan support. A lot of fans knew who I was and talked to me and it made me feel pretty good.” Mc Cray said

    Virginia Tech Close To Home

“Like North Carolina, they (Virginia Tech) are close to home. I’ve been up there a lot and the fans know who I am. Last year I went to the Maryland game and the Georgia Tech game. Game day at Virginia Tech is pretty nasty it gets pretty loud.” Mc Cary said

“I took a visit down there (Tennessee) during spring break and liked it.” Mc Cray said, “I liked the campus and the business school. From watching their spring practice they really get after it.”

“I like them (Tennessee) they possible be one of the teams in my top six. I’m trying to feel them out a little bit more.” Mc Cray added

Alabama grew up watching Florida State games.

“I was born in Alabama (Huntsville) there are a power house program. I’m not really had one team that I followed a whole lot. I watched a lot of Florida State games. I actually haven’t followed Alabama.” Mc Cray said

“The tradition at Alabama is great,” says Mc Cray, “Just the completion in the SEC, they are on a roll and they are coming up to win a national championship.”

“Last year I went to the Alabama and Tennessee game at Tennessee. It was fun I couldn’t believe Alabama fans would travel that far there were more Alabama fans than Tennessee fans at the game. It was crazy.” Mc Cray said

    LSU After Mc Cray Hard

“LSU is recruiting me pretty hard,” says Mc Cray, “I’ll call down there once in a while. I’m beginning to build a great relationship with Coach Haley and Les Miles. I like how LSU has won national championships and stuff like that.”

    The Mail Keeps On Coming

“Gosh I get stacks of mail everyday it’s ridiculous. I don’t read them all. There are a couple of schools I’ve narrowed it down, I’m reading their stuff. I read all the hand written stuff I want to read them just to see what it says.” Mc Cray said

    “Depends What Happens”

“I don’t know it just depends how everything unfold on me.” Mc Cary comments when he might commit, “It depends what happen over the summer to see what I can accomplish and go from there. If I have to take official visits I’ll take them.”

Here is a video on him. Looks pretty darn good.
