I hear you, but the sentiment so far in this thread seems to be essentially "Smothers doesn't have the arm talent to effectively run the offense" and so many people are touting Haarberg & Torres above him when we haven't even seen either of those guys play at all.

So IF we pull in a transfer QB or 2 and Smothers ends up being QB1, I know well enough to expect plenty of comments such as "They couldn't even beat out Smothers, we're so effed" and variations of that, and I think that's all pretty ridiculous TBH.

It wouldn't be Huskerboard if there wasn't!

Have y’all considered a world where we don’t land a transfer QB and we are kicking off in Dublin with Smothers as our starter? I hadn’t until just now and made me reconsider all the F5’ing I’ve been doing this week.

Bro, we didn't bust out the wallet for Whipple and tell Martinez good luck; to NOT GET A QB in the PORTAL this year!!! IMHO #AllInBaby

An occasional option play was cute for awhile. I don’t think it would be successful as a base option.

I will never understand why people think the option is "outdated"! It is an offense built on blocking and offensive line schemes. Big mother-loving plows up front, that moved DIRT! It is built to control time of possession and wearing your opponent out with many 2-3 yard plays. The option was NEVER defeated!!! We just retired and fired it. We had a foundation of different position coaches and all we did all day long was live drills against our own defense.  We were chopping some trees down with the option, but they wanted Barabbas! Discipline and physical training should never change regardless of a generation for a program. Unfortunately, back then with the people in charge of the University; I personally think they wanted to go all LA. They got charmed by the notoriety and flattery, before social media even. Still can't believe that Tommy Lee nonsense.  For some reason, I feel ex-huskers as AD and Head Coach will do something to exorcise the demons of the radical mistake of dishonoring Tom Osborne. I really think 2022 is is going to be our hump year of starting our new bowl record!!! Scott Frost can coach longer than Tom now too! kool-aid-oh-yeah.gif.9447762d4b28adbf3f74a52f98f36cbd.gif

  4. Unfortunately, they were their own worst enemies to each other. I think Frost mixed business with personal and that inhibited him from being able to provide accountability tied to qb play in games on the team. The main issue here in my opinion is the fact that Scott Frost couldn't develop, or improve skills for a qb. Basic mechanic improvements and reads that didn't require any athleticism.  Too many times Martinez didn't have the ability to read the field and threw when he should have run on the option. A good stat to investigate would be rushes per game per year to analyze. On the pass option I felt he passed way too much according to the reads and defensive play. On the run option, I felt he didn't hand it off a lot on plays to get the most yardage, he chose to run it himself. I don't know about you but if my qb was making that many mistakes and what not, he would be running 15 mile sprints a day. He would get benched to be EMBARRASSED of his PLAY. If I was a qb, I would be going all Michael Jordan and getting people to work with me on throwing passes from dawn to night. I would be analyzing tape everyday to look at my bad reads and not REPEAT the same mistakes. I think the problem is they came into this marriage together, and they couldn't give critical criticism to each other when it was needed. Not having QB development coaches to be able to help a qb for 4 years develop, when your head coach was a qb; is a TRAVESTY for a program. Stats are not development. IMHO. I think that Frost will get Spencer Rattler because Rattler wants revenge against Oklahoma, and we play them next year. Scott Frost wants redemption for his decision making as a coach, so they both want the same thing. It could turn into a program defining moment to be honest. #ImGettingMyPopcorn #YesMartinezIsAClassActToo #ChangeIsGood

The general idea, imo, to delaying until spring was to do two basic things:

    1.   Reduce risk of covid 19 infections until AFTER the epidemic subsided (immunity, vaccines, fewer cases,  etc) for players, students, fans, coaches, communities at large, etal.

    2.   Cut fiscal loss and risks to schools and Big Ten by playing when games could be rescheduled and played normally.

Now, the plan is to delay 7 weeks from orig date, player fewer games, spend millions on testing and more medical stuff that likely is mostly useless, have no fans at all to cut revenues as much as possible, reduce home games for all Big Ten teams, scramble to find TV times and find a paying audience therefore. and minimize any post season opportunities and maximize chances of bad waether conditions, reduce or eliminate Big Ten recruiting abilities, and maximize the inconvenience and stress on all parties involved, and leave a very unfavorable impression on Big Ten, schools, players and athletics in general, and create potential Title 9 risks.

Yes, I am praying for the team to play and do well.  But, no I am not optimistic.

Husker Football needs a good season (more than three or four games) that put us back in a positive competitive light nationally and players have fun doing it.  They are creating memories surely!  Hope things work out happily for them.

You do realize that this isn't about us fans anymore right? This is about doing the right thing for the KIDS(students) and their spiritual/mental well being. I don't care if we lose every single game by blowouts. I support Nebraska for the hard work they put in, not because they or the Big Ten owe me anything. If they KIDS get enjoyment while they play, that's all I care about at this point. To me, it's not about our fervent idolatry, in pursuit of the reclamation of our past glories; and the prominence therein. I care more about having the right administration officials at UNL. This was the formula and foundation of Husker Football that had been lacking for over 20 years.  Loyalty, continuity, and communication.  I think having our top university officials and coaches profess their solidarity to play football on a national stage, can only help erase the 20 years of our Husker program having a lack of IDENTITY and CULTURE regardless how the season goes.  I know with the right pieces in place, the return to glory is only a matter of time.  Watching it play out in real time, is better than a binge watching session of your favorite show. Knowing I will be alive when it happens, is like the night before Christmas happening every day until it does happen.

Geesh!  The whole reason we are playing is to NOT lose money while  doing it.   We could have played empty stadium fball since 9/1.  This plan likely fails.  The losses get worse, not better but we all go down with the Big Ten together!

I really don't feel comfortable with this decision. We've already seen a player die from COVID (I know he didn't catch it on campus, but it's evidence that these players aren't as special as y'all thought), we've seen multiple games get postponed, we've seen entire units on teams go into quarantine.

Am I going to watch the games? Yeah, because I have a problem. But I really wish we just stayed strong. I think history is going to show the B1G was on the right side of this.

    I can't believe a reputable source like <checks URL> "stutsfamily.com" could make such a mistake!

That had been a site I have went to, since before Al Gore created the internet.  J/K More like when Windows 98 came out.  It had been a good source.  I just went and looked at it, and it is obvious it is a dead "site", or that someone hacked the original information in there and changed countries around.  I guess there is a end for everything.
