I think getting a conference title and BCS win would have given Pelini more leash, but after 2012 his teams had been delivering diminishing returns and his record was being propped up by winning close games in the Gary Anderson/Bill Cubit/Darrell Hazell/Jerry Kill/Hot Seat Kirk Ferentz version of the Big Ten West. His teams would not have been going 8-4 in the 2019 or 2020 versions of this division. Pelini was still delivering top 30/40ish-type teams, and maybe he'd have turned it back around with another year, but there was a football case to be made for moving on. And you can't be underwhelming in your job performance AND a raging jerk to the people you work with and expect to keep your job.

As far as Riley, anyone saying he wasn't expected to come in and win as much or more than Pelini is doing some big-time revisionist history. The narrative was that "If he was able to win eight games at a bad program, imagine what he'll be able to do at a program with resources!" Instead he came in and ran the program with resources exactly like the bad program. Many fans thought it was a bad hire but that wasn't the consensus.

This is the most ridiculous falsehood in this entire thread.  Bo had way better freaking players then anything remotely put on the field by this staff.  I am not even going to get into the D Line he had ready to go when he was fired.  He had identified that and recruited beasts to that position.  2 of them were the most underutilized players in Nebraska history.  Ahh that's right though, that wouldn't have continued right?  That's always the stupid narrative?  He couldn't recruit right?  As far as I've seen this staff hasn't even come close to being even in the running for guys of Bos classes calibur.  Riley's and Frosts best players were still Bo recruits.  There's no revisionist history here.  This dumping on the guy who was clearly a superior coach of the last 4 is crazy.  I liked winning, we won, we were never more then a game out of the top of the division.  Big game comment right?  I'll take all those big game blowouts to the desecrations of Memorial stadium that occurred after he left.

And because he couldn't win the big game, a championship, was routinely embarrassed on the national stage, and always lost 4 games. His attitude was just icing on the cake.

Cry me a freaking river about the national stage.  "Good" teams continually to this day get hammered in big games.   He also was in big games because his team's were good.  Every single Scott Frost team would get slaughtered by any of Bos teams.

I get the joke but Oklahoma’s offense is going to drop about 40-50 points on our defense next year while we score 14-17.

17 in the 4th, while Martinez racks up 200 yards and Nebraska fans will conjure up some look at those stats excuse as to how good he is.

2016 was an easy schedule and we had a bit of momentum created by a front loaded easy schedule with the one outlier, a squeaked win against the weakest Oregon team in over a decade.

2017 was all on Bob Diaco?  He isn't good but he was far from the reason we stunk that year.  In 6 of our losses that year we scored 24 of fewer points.  One of those we put up 17 against power house Northern Illinois.  We capped our scoring explosion that year with a whopping 14 points against Iowa in a 56-14 beat down.  Sounds like a group of kids Scott should have really kept around...smh.

I agree, losing Wandale hurts some but whether he was here in 2021 or not will not decide the direction of this program.  McCaffrey on the other hand really doesn't move the needle imo.  What exactly has he done?  What was he really going to do to change the program going forward?

Yes, many Nebraska fans will remain optimistic because they can see the changes.  We are recruiting a different level of player on both sides of the ball.  From bigger, more athletic linemen & linebackers, taller receivers, and the best tight ends in the country.  We are starting to win in the trenches and showing flashes of what will come.  Nebraska will be a much better team in the future.

Those of us who are realistic know we won't be competing for championships in 2021 but there is no reason we can't take a significant step forward.

There wasn't any reason for that not to happen the last 2 years as well and the excuses and whining about why that didn't happen are ridiculous.

I think people would be foolish to think that we haven't improved under Frost. The fact of the matter is when Frost got here we were glorified high School football team, the rebuild after Mike Riley was a huge undertaking I don't care who was the coach. I definitely think we're headed in the right direction it's just not showing up in the win column, I think we will fall short of my ten and two expectation but I think we could definitely get to seven or eight wins and a bowl game if that turns into nine win season. That can go a long way however. we are going to need to replace Martinez at some point and I think we have to have a better quarterback than the ones we have in order to keep progressing the way we need to in order to sustain success. A high caliber quarterback is a must.

Matt Davison is that you?  Matt......did you get drunk and start posting again?

That's not the tone of any of the rest of your posts in this thread.  But hey, it's the internet....

The OL is primarily what is setting us back right now.  We have some young guys on the DL looking very good.  Probably NFL futures for them

The OL takes longer.  And yes, Frost bears the responsibility for this but starting with his second recruiting class he is bringing in the body types and talent we need on the OL.

Guys like Corcoran, Piper and Benhart are the level we need

But they are very inexperienced.  The DL doesn't need the experience or communication required by an OL.

So I'm way less concerned about a player like Wandale possibly leaving than I am focusing on the OL recruiting and development.

Well then you are going to continue to see the losses pile up if you don't have offensive play makers.  Also continued blame for the OL is tired.   They weren't awful.  QB is the most concerning position and it's not even close.

We lost some recruits that appeared to be good on paper during an unprecedented pandemic year where nothing was remotely close to normal.  The majority of those lost were living 1500 miles from home and being forced to live in a capsule without all of the fun that goes along with standard college life.

Of course we have lost a few unrelated to Covid but, imo, those guys either needed to go (JD) or they weren't going to be major contributors like Green.

Nebraska were to pull out wins against Purdue and Minnesota.  Then get a crossover against another "beatable" team like Rutgers or Maryland and finish regular season at 4-4.

    Hold on, there's more!!!

Nebraska then gets invited to a mid-tier bowl against a "beatable" MAC team.

What if Nebraska ends up 5-4 this season?  What would be everyone's thoughts going into Spring Ball?

Not sure I would go there yet. MSU has gotten run out of the building by Iowa, a team that we played toe to toe with in a rival game....yes they beat NW and we did not. If you look at NW game, we had every chance to win. Play calls weren't reason, in game execution by players. This week, NW coming off emotional win vs Wiscy, let down on the road.

Just because a record is better doesnt mean coach is better. We have been much more competitive than MSU. If you go back to SF first year, we were even more competitive then...so, no, I wouldnt anoint Tucker, unless I was just making pure emotional post.....which is easy to do with Husker football

I wasn't necessarily advocating as to who is the better coach.  I'm referring to the stupid we needed to burn it down/ rebuild/ culture change.  Similarly the bare closet thing.   Simply coaching well can win you some games because you are the more talented team.  The basic excuses of the fan base here in the moment are using excuses that many others don't, the coach the same way.  You are seriously going to come out in the press and say something about the guys that were here 3 years ago?  In a loss to Iowa, I mean come on.  It just feeds that narrative, I truly feel that Michigan state had a worse problem with that.  when you watched that game you see the difference in attitude between teams.  During the Colorado game you saw that exact same thing.  Personally I think that guy is a pretty good coach, that withstanding, this more about the excuses then how I feel about the potential coach.

Lastly if Frost can't jump off that wagon at some point it's going to tough.  It's not Mike's fault anymore and if he doesn't personally start becoming more accountable how do you think the players will continually act?  Like still talking smack to Illinois after you getting your gut punched in the forth? These are things that culture is trying to instill might not be the best at the time.  Your team just finds more reasons about what happened "wrong" during the week then right.  Example of what was said about practice.  You can have your players and coaches backs all you want, or the most want in the world to win.  If it doesn't correspond to what we are teaching or instilling needs to be changed you get more of the same.  So yes in my estimation it looks like Mel Tucker isn't farting around blaming his last staff, he's beating Michigan in his first year and taking down a top 8 team while his team believes they can.

Barry Alvarez had to do it.

When a program is broken and accepted a losing culture, the only way to rebuild it is to "burn it down" and start over. It's the only way you weed out all of the issues. Sometimes that process can be done in a couple of years and others it may take a few years. It took Clemson a few years to fix their issues and now they are so damn good they can go up 24-0 against Pitt with 5 minutes left in the first quarter.

When Saban took over Alabama it was a program that still had some good seasons but was struggling to maintain good success. When Saban took over Michgian State he essentially burned it down to rebuild it but didn't get over the hump before leaving to LSU. Bowden had to do burn things down and start over when he took over at Florida State.

But Michigan state doesn't have to do because they had a long tenured head coach getting crucified.  They have lost scholarships, changed an entire staff, and now successfully won more games as an underdog then Frost.  IN 5 GAMES AS HEAD COACH.  Burning to the ground is an excuse for people to use to rationalize the fact they thought they were correct.  Frost has continually thrown his team under the bus, found dumb excuses after games.  He also generally talks like it's not his fault we are losing.  Sorry it's substantially his fault.  Burning it down...such an terrible excuse for terrible football.  From a guy that won't take some responsibility.  Lastly the only time he shows any emotion is a freaking field goal play.

Mel Tucker is better coach at Michigan State in his first year then Scott Frost is in his 3rd.

Well bud, we all knew what a huge rebuild project this was when Frost was hired. What's more he's had the worse string of luck any coach has had with cancelled games, pandemics etc.

Additionally our team is completely devoid of senior leadership. Last year our line was bunk and our only real option at qb played the whole season injured. We all knew this would take time. Is the record worse than I expected? Yep. Should Frost's seat be hot at all, nope.

Do Nebraska fans need to quit offering coaches ultimatums yup. Solich says hi. Pelini was right, Fairweather.

Quit using the word rebuild, it's overplayed, coaches across the nation walk into way worse situations.  With way worse players and change things in a hurry.  His coaching has been deplorable on game day.  Those are just facts.

  14. Let this sink in.

Noah a projected "3rd team" player on Nebraska's team is the third leading passer in the big ten.  His offense scores 30 points a game.  His team's average recruiting ranking is 70th over 4 years.  His offensive coordinator is in his first year.  Noah has chance to have his team win more games this year then Nebraska.  That in itself is a disgrace and someone needs to be fired.

From the article, this is pretty frustrating.    We are back to Tommie Armstrong basically - every pass is an adventure and teams that line up to stop the QB run will be successful.   Why do we bother to recruit high quality RBs and WRs if we are reliant on the QB to do so much :dunno   I agree with the others who have said, we need a drop back QB who can pass & distribute ball to RBs and with some athletic ability to run if needed.  Is Smothers that guy?  What about the 2021 QB recruits?    We got to have an identity as a run first team and build around that to be successful in the Big 10 - the Big 10 isn't a pass happy conf like the Big 12 or AAC.  Therefore, we need the QB to be a passer, manager first and a runner last.

It feels like not only are we wasting this 'free year' of eligibility but also the 3 years of development if we have to do a complete reset below Frost in his schemes for both D and O .   We can't forget about the defense in all of this hand wringing - DC Chin hasn't exactly performed that great either - a defensive stand and win over 0-5 PSU does not make  a D great.

Lol Armstrong was far and away a better passer then any of these 2.  It isn't even close

Ya I’m not sure that applies to AM so much. He’s not just missing receivers. He consistently one hops throws in the dirt, throws swing passes at the running backs feet, throws uncatchable balls out of bounds or the back of the end zone.. That’s purely him not being comfortable and settling down and making a throw. All in him and I don’t think it’s lack of ability either.

The fields only so big.  It doesn't extend beyond the out of bounds line.  Screen passes are being run correctly, it's almost impossible to screw up that route.  Throwing into triple coverage is a choice by the quarterback, not the receiver.

Meanwhile Indiana is almost in the top ten

  18. These threads are so just ugh.  No one wants to stay calm, people want to watch winning football.  People don't want to watch am arms crossed coach on the sideline with his unenthusiastic team commit dumb mistakes all the time.  No one wants to stay calm while turning the corner has been right at our finger tips for 3 years.  No one wants to see a quarterback who is scared of everything play football.  No one wants to stay calm while Indiana, Baylor, Iowa state ect. Continue to improve and be successful while we still use the f*@^@%@ BS culture excuse and look what Scott had when he got here.  That crap is done and staying calm hasn't produced any tangible results.  So no I will not stay calm and you shouldn't either.

No indication? Our lines are better than they have been in years. Isn't that what everyone has been yammering for? Thats the foundation and its being built. I am always amazed at how many husker fans don't watch husker games.

You are? With most people's "analysis" on here coming from them reading a box score or what Uncle Ed said the Huskers looked like? I'm not surprised in the least, there are tons of "fans" or fanatics that won't even know the score until someone they know tells them.

    Example

3 yard run up the middle on first down, responses from fans in the stands or the bar:

"Why would you even call that?"

Shrieking girl "OMG that was so bad"

"Pfft in the 90s that would have gone for 60 yards"

    "This team is horrible."

All in the span of the offense lining up for 2nd and 7 and the play doing exactly what it was designed to do.  Then will come on the message board and spout off something about what they saw, which they probably didn't because they were doing something else.  If your kids have sports I get it.  If you went to a leisure activity and then think you have some great commentary on the game, tell your shrieking significant other that probably doesn't understand the first down run.  No one else cares

I'm not trying to knock Tommy, but freshman Adrian was better than Tommy and sophomore Adrian was on par with those years with Tommy. Adrian has outrun Tommy every year except for his sophomore year where he went for 705. As a passer so far, Adrian has been consistently more accurate than even Tommy's best year and AM's passer rating his freshmen bested anything Tommy did and their sophomore years were similar. Tommy threw for a few more TD's and yards, but also more interceptions (with a few more games) than AM has. So, if we get freshman AM or better this year along with good OL and RB play we should see our best QB play in a long time.

    Lol no
