If only the mortality rate were that low. And even if it were, people really need to stop thinking of this as some black and white thing, where either you die or you're perfectly fine, or that it's something that only affects old people. Unless you think it's totally normal and OK for 30-somethings who were never hospitalized to be having strokes, or 20-somethings with Kawasaki disease-like symptoms.
Yes, people, yourself included, have a very diffcult time emotionally grappling with probabilities. No it isnt all old people but it is mostly. Likewise your examples of young people are anecdoatal outliers.

Without a vaccine you CAN NOT have "herd immunity"... Your statement only shows that you dont understand the concept or process..#science https://www.jhsph.edu/covid-19/articles/achieving-herd-immunity-with-covid19.html https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/coronavirus/in-depth/herd-immunity-and-coronavirus/art-20486808
Uh yeah....that was kind of the point - if one doesnt exist neither does the other. Your post only shows that you dont understand....reading

It seems that teting positive to COVID-19 will determine whether or not a college team will play football, basketball, volleyball or soccar. Since the latest news from Spain seems to point that natural immunity only lasts for a few weeks. Would vaccines be any better? To avoid the risk, all HS and College sports will be cancelled forever. It doesn't stop there. Cancellations would also apply to all indoor gatherings (movies, stage plays, etc.) I hope that long term immunity can be developed, but if not....are we as a society really so risk averse to want to live in such a world?
the mumps vaccine is consdered one of, if not the fastest, vaccine ever created - it took 4 years.
you'll hear "experts" on this forum say there is no herd immunity. if there isnt there is likely no vaccine and we are wearing masks forever.
i agree just social distance for all time

The season should be cancelled and maybe next season too. If we as a society are too stupid to look past 'cases' as our central metric for a sickness that has less than a 1% mortality rate (and even lower among young people), we dont deserve sports. When we get past the mentality that we can make this thing go away or hide from it maybe there will be hope.

Its funny how this always turns into an argument. The people with the bunker mentality are going to do what they're going to do and the people with the 'let it happen' mentality will do the same. No one is convincing the other side of anything. See ya.

I think there will be football (NFL & College) come Sept, although I suspect with much smaller crowds that are 'practicing social distancing' in the stands. I'm pretty confident about that.
To me the more interesting question is this: Do you think there will be full crowds, NFL and college, in 2021? I say absolutely yes with almost 100% certainty.

And herein lies the problem (yet again): if people would park their selfishness and wear a mask for the good of their communities, we would mitigate the spread and be able to go back to a semi-normal lifestyle without spreading the disease as far as we have.
It's that simple. If you want football this fall (or anything normal, for that matter), put on a damn mask.
That won't happen, people are inherently selfish. And I do wear a mask as stated previously. I think what we are living in is the 'new normal'. Its just going to take awhile for people to get used to it.

There is no scientific evidence that herd immunity is a thing with this disease. Anyone counting on that saving us is practicing wishful thinking without further evidence.
Then just hide out and wait for a vaccine? If that is your solution, you are welcome to do that. The vast majority of people will not do that. How many people do you think will be wearing a mask a year from now? Not many but you are welcome to.
"Research suggests that after infection with some coronaviruses, reinfection with the same virus — though usually mild and only happening in a fraction of people — is possible after a period of months or years."
If true, is this not essentially herd immunity? It may be different than other viruses but the risk of death from reinfection would be very very small.

wearing a mask is not the problem nor the solution. But it makes some people feel better because they are doing something and gives them a false sense of safety. The “experts” say it reduces the probability of infection by about 2%. Even the Great Fauci said masks are almost useless. But if it makes people feel better, fine. Very little downside to them. I am all for masks if the result is we start living again. Open things up and treat those who do get sick. Its not a matter of if everyone gets it, just when.
You are correct about opening things back up. Herd immunity is the only way to get past this although its probably never going away completely. Maybe if there is an effective vaccine, but those generally take years to develop. Things look bad in Arizona, Texas, Florida right now but the reality is they are closer to herd immunity than most and doing it at a time when the weather is less favorable for a virus. I do think masks help some although i wear them more as a courtesy to others and because here IL we are still required to wear them in public. When we are no longer required to wear them I wont wear one.

I am sure the fact we might be the most unhealthy, obese country in the world might have something to do with high death rates.
What high death rates?

What are things like out there in Nebraska? I'm in central IL and we are shelter in place. Quite a few people out at the parks. They just put signs up kids arent supposed to be on equipment. My wife works at the hospital and things are relatively quiet right now with wuhan cases.

I also had this thought. He was hung out to dry by many a bad pass last year. Took many shots I figured were game enders, but always came back and continued running those crossing routes. A real stud. Maybe he figures he'll sees nothing but more of the same this next fall.
To follow your logic he would have to be retiring from football if he doesnt come back. Minnesota or the nfl arent going to be any easier on his body.

The Colorado purdue and indiana games should have been absolute wins. The first two were bad teams and indiana should not be good enough to beat you at home. That's 8 right there.
