  1. I'm not getting the hate in this thread. Richt straight-up beat Bo last year. He was 1 play away from having his team in the National Title game last year. He's coached in, and been successful in, the toughest conference that college football has ever seen. Sure, he has proximity to recruits. You know who else is nearby? Florida, Florida State, Alabama, South Carolina, Clemson, etc; not to mention, pretty much everyone recruits, or tries to recruit, Georgia.

The thing that gets me is that the big argument against Frost is that he's never been a HC. Neither has Kirby Smart. I think both of those guys are going to be fantastic head coaches, but the main argument I've heard against both is that "we don't want another guy learning on the job". Now, we're willing to hypothetically throw away a SUCCESSFUL SEC-level coach because his team (which has been destroyed by injuries this year) lost to Vandy and Missouri? I'm just not seeing it, guys. If the dominoes fall this way, and we have a shot at getting Richt, it would be colossally, monumentally idiotic not to pursue him.

  2. Because we're not getting the highly ranked recruit in question this year?

Is recruiting closed for the year? I must have missed that part.

Good point. The post in question doesn't specify how locked-in the kid is to his school, or if there are other recruits we are looking at in that program. However, how much time do we spend trying to flip a kid vs. going and getting other targets at that position?

  3. This probably isn't the point you were trying to make, but it sticks out with me. Do you think Saban walks into a coaches office and asks if there's a chance the kid will come to Bama' and then when told no doesn't even meet with the kid? This scares the crap out of me. If everyone involved with sales took this approach, they'd either be fired or starve to death. Nebraska itself doesn't exactly sell itself. Bo is going to have to go above and beyond in recruiting to ever have a chance.

you do realize the better his relationship with a coach the better his chances with future recruits that play for that coach?

True, but it doesn't so much for us right now.

    And you know this how?

Because we're not getting the highly ranked recruit in question this year?

    That's your arguement? Try again...

Try what again? Bo walked into a coach's office, asked if we had a chance with a highly-ranked recruit this year, and the coach said no. This does nothing to help next year's team.

Now, the relationship Bo builds with that coach can certainly help us recruiting kids from that school in the future, but it does absolutely nothing to help out this year's recruiting class. That's fairly easy to see. It's not a dig at Bo, or how he recruits. It's just a fact.

  6. 1. Legate needs to work on his blocking before getting too many more carries.

    2. Seriously, I can not for the life of me understand people's fascination with the Rexcat. Why in the world would we use that when we already have a QB who can run the ball? No kidding, if someone could answer this for me, I'd appreciate it, because I see it brought up all the time on this board and just don't understand it.

Because Rex is much, much better at making reads out of the Read Option than Taylor is. That, and he's a much better runner inbetween the tackles.

I don't really buy this. The part about making better reads, that is. Burkhead didn't have to deal with defenses keying on him like Martinez did. After Kansas State, every defense we played last year set out to stop Martinez, at the risk of leaving other parts of our offense undefended. No defense gave Rex Burkhead that much respect.

If you want to run Rex between the tackles, then just hand the ball off. With Martinez on the field, you've got a QB who can run, and the defense has to worry about defending his legs and his arm. Even when he hands the ball off, Martinez can create problems for the defense because they're so worried about him keeping it. You take him off the field, and you remove the most dynamic player from our offense, the guy that keeps defensive coordinators up at night, and you're only doing it so you can run the same plays with Rex Burkhead and one of the other running backs. It doesn't make any sense, it makes the offense less threatening, and easier to defend.

For the record, I think the coaches might agree with me, since at least according to Rex Burkhead they haven't worked on the Rexcat at all this year. Maybe he's just lying, that wouldn't surprise me, but for now I'm going with "the coaches agree with me."

That's the very essence of a Read Option, though. If the defense is keying on the QB, hand the ball off to the RB. How many times last year did we see Taylor make the incorrect read, and get stuffed behind the line?

  7. Dr. Zatechka was my dad's anesthesiologist last December. Cool guy. Wears a NY Giants bandana in the prep room, for which we gave him a raft of crap.

Very much like that he pointed out that Martinez "is still just a SOPHOMORE." I think people expect him to play like Tommie, Frosty and Crouch did as they remember them most - as Seniors. He's not a Senior, he's a young guy still growing into his role.

Both Tommie and Crouch almost won National Titles as sophomores.....

Crouch and especially Frazier had MASSIVELY better Olines than Tmart. Wow....talk about a night & day difference. They also didn't have to change offensive schemes every year. While I hope the best for Beck it would be silly to compare him with TO as an OC.

    You're talking apples & oranges.

The direct quote was "I think people expect him to play like Tommie...and Crouch did as they remember them..." I don't remember Tommie or Eric having happy feet, or going through one progression before taking off and running during a passing play, or making the wrong reads constantly on the option at this point in their careers. And yes, I realize that elements of a new offense are being added in. Look at it in a vacuum, and compare the 3 at the same time, and you'll see Martinez is still far behind where Tommie and Eric were at this stage of their careers.

Still, I think you can point out that your starting QB said a dumb thing, which is really all I was saying, and I meant it mostly tongue-in-cheek, without being declared an Enemy of the Husker State. Sheesh. Some of you people seriously need to lighten up.

He said he wants to win a National Title. How, in any universe, is that a dumb thing to say?

  11. I thought Oregon was more of a spread type thing.

Oregon runs the spread option. Very similar to what Nebraska was just starting to run in 1997 before Osborne Retired and Solich went more conservative.

Similar to what we ran last year I'd say.

Or where we have been trying to get to recently, at least.

Remember how sick of the read option we got last year? Guys were denouncing it left and right.

Because we ran it 75% of the time and half the time Taylor made the wrong read.

Uhhh.....because he had a bad ankle on one leg and turf toe on the other "might" have had something to do with it?

I didn't realize that you read defenses with your ankles and your toes...

I believe he is implying that Taylor may have predetermined his reads because he didn't feel comfortable trying to create a play with his injuries.

After the injury, they were predetermined by Watson.

If they were predetermined, they why run them? It's nothing more than an off-tackle or draw with zone read blocking. If he isn't going to read the defense and hand it off the entire time, then just call a dive or off-tackle play where you actually have pulling guards and man-up blocking. We would have had a better chance at gaining yards than running an off-tackle with an unblocked DE running down the HB every time.

More reasons as to why Watson isn't around anymore.

  12. Martinez set a Nebraska freshman record with 323 yards passing, threw a career-high five touchdown passes and the 14th-ranked Cornhuskers knocked No. 17 Oklahoma State from the ranks of the unbeaten with a 51-41 win on Saturday.

If the results are like that with any consistency, he can under hand toss for all I care.

    Statistical outlier.
