  1. Wow. That was an awesome article. Basically they're saying he's impressed them enough in the short time he's been there that they aren't even thinking about moving him to another position. It sounds like he has the poise that a good quarterback needs too. I can't wait for the spring game.

I definitely would not say that, at all.

Martinez's athleticism was never a question mark, it's his ability to understand the offense, clean up his throwing motion, understand reads, etc,. I have no doubts Taylor will be the guy to talk the 'Wildcat' from Rex, just because we need his athleticism on the field. But right now, Taylor offers about as much with his arm as Cody did last year.

You might want to go back and re-read the article. Direct quote from the coaches themselves:

'Nebraska coach Bo Pelini was adamant in his pre-spring news conference about the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Martinez playing and staying — at quarterback'.

    Not wide receiver. Not safety.

Sure, they're options. Watson said those doors aren't closed, and that the quiet, humble Martinez is open-minded about playing another position.

"But are we going to do it? No, because we want to see this through," Watson said. "He's got talent."

  2. Personally I think he had the luxury (and luck) that Joe Ganz stepped up the way he did while he was the starter here. Those stats say a lot but mostly I just look at some of the decisions he made last year and the direction that he tried to take our offense. So many things that had me scratching my head last season from a playcalling standpoint. Also in interviews Pelini seems to totally be behind Watson. I trust Pelini wholeheartedly but at the same time he can't throw one of his coaches under the bus publicly either.

I guess despite what success you have as a team you still have to look at the actual decisions that are being made. I saw enough last year to pretty much convince me that the guy simply was an overhyped offensive coordinator when we hired him. That's just my opinion.

Now that I say this sure enough the Nebraska offense will suddenly come alive this year...LOL.

  3. It would be awesome to see someone we didn't expect to emerge yet for the starting position to be the Starting QB (Martinez anyone???)

It seems like Spano is kind of that unsung guy. Not really talked about too much in comparison to Green and Zac Lee. He's almost the Joe Ganz of the group in terms of not coming in with all the accolades like some of the other quarterbacks have. It would be really cool if he emerged. I wish I knew more about him talent wise. I think I read somewhere on this board, maybe it was a quote from Watson that Spano may have the strongest arm of all the quarterbacks? I am not sure.

  4. Paul over the first three names there? ...

I had no problems voting for Suh when a similiar voting thread came up because I felt he was the best defensive player in all of college football last year. I can't vote for Paul

as far as being the best returning wide receiver though. Hope he has a good senior season. I also hope he drops less passes this year and becomes more consistant.

  5. I know our defense will be good. I just honestly think who is going to step up and make the 'big play' when we need it the most on defense. O'Hanlon had a lot of those plays last year as did Suh and Asante. Can't forget about

Dillard either. I know he had some pretty big stops at crucial times last year. I cannot wait to see all of the new talent. We lost some talent to graduation but I'm really excited to see how we react this year.

I was also just thinking I wonder if Crick is going to be the guy seeing all of the double teams now?!!! Good article.

  6. I've always really liked Bobby Bowden. It was kind of sad to see how he was treated when he left/retired especially with him bringing FSU football to the forefront and making that program what it is today. It's great hearing that he came to talk to the Huskers.

  7. I just wonder who was the one who decided it was time to finally try to get McNeil the ball. This is great news. I also wish they would have did this last year. (Looking at you Shawn Watson...)

absolutely spot on, Wats has always been a dollar late and a day short IMO. facepalm.gif

    We didn't try in 2008?

McNeil was seriously injured and played through it for a lot of 2009. And, we had no legit WR playmaking threats for most of the year, allowing teams to take away the TE without worrying as much on the outside. Not to mention we had less able QBs...but yet, people still want to see QBs that will just be fast and run with the ball, which would entail even less getting the ball to our TEs and WRs. It doesn't make sense to me.

McNeil had 28 receptions to Paul's 40. And he had 32 in his breakout 2008 campaign. Though his 2009 campaign had less TDs and much less yardage, it was no less short of incredibly clutch catches on 3rd down and TDs (Mizzou) that really were really game-defining.

McNeil was seriously injured? What was his serious injury????

Regardless McNeill should have been our go to guy last year after what he showed in 2008. (that he is one of our best receivers) Besides Kansas and his one catch against Missouri that happened to be a huge TD his stats in some of our bigger games speak volumes.

Florida Atlantic: Started 13th career game, tying for team lead with four catches... posted 51 yards, including long of 29 yards.

Arkansas State: Posted second straight four-catch performance for 57 yards... caught first two TDs of season on 13- and 32-yard tosses from Zac Lee... first multi-TD game of career.

Virginia Tech (L): Recorded just one catch for four yards.

Louisiana-Lafayette: Posted two receptions on the night.

Missouri: Only catch of the game was an eight-yard TD reception.

Texas Tech (L): Posted two catches for 14 yards.

Iowa State (L): Had two catches for 22 yards.

Baylor: Did not have a catch, snapping streak of 17 straight games with a reception.

Oklahoma: Recorded one catch for two yards.

    Kansas: Had four catches.

Kansas State: Had three catches for 26 yards.

Colorado: Posted one catch for three yards.

Texas (L): Played. Did not have a catch.

If he did have an injury then I will definitely agree, that would have a huge impact obviously on his touches. It just seems to me like when we needed him the most he was sort of a forgotten man.

  8. I'm sorry to all you Helu lovers out there, but I agree with the guy. Not for his opinions about the line play, but Roy's inconsistencies and constant injuries make for him to labeled "over-rated". With out any true definition of the word it is hard to explain exactly, but Roy will never be the back some of you think he will be, he is no Brandon Jackson. He just doesn't have the BEASTMODE factor.

    facepalm.gif

You're right, Helu actually rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season. I agree that he might not be an all-time great, but he is definitely better than Brandon Jackson.

Better than Brandon Jackson? I like Helu alright but I'd take B Jax any day of the week over Helu.

  9. If you're looking for something to do today, how about submitting your name for the NFL's supplemental draft? Evidently anyone can do it, even Quentin Castille.

Pelini unceremoniously booted the once promising running back on August 22 for the usual mysterious undisclosed violation of team rules, ending Castille's shot at the riches and fame of pro football.

Or so we thought! Castille has found his way into the NFL draft after all. He's parlaying the 349 yards rushing that he racked up in 11 games during his junior year at something called "Northwestern State University" in 2009. What NFL team wouldn't want a D-1 castoff who averaged 3.3 yards/carry and 0.09 TD/game against the likes of McNeese State, Sam Houston State and Nicholls? (In fairness, he did post 7 yards on 8 carries in NSU's 68-13 loss to Baylor.)

If I sound bitter it's because the last time we saw Quentin Castille he was running all over Clemson in the 2009 Gator Bowl, posting 125 yards rushing while Helu and Lucky were slowed by injuries. He could have been good. And because of Castille's undisclosed shenanigans, these things didn't happen: (1) the easy Iowa State victory in October, (2) Helu's orderly and unrushed return from injury, and (3) Rex Burkhead's uneventful (and healthy) 2009 redshirt year. And of course, (4) Quentin Castille's NFL career.

    LINK(Better off Red)

Personally I was never that big of a Quentin Castille fan. When I heard he was let go honestly I didn't give it much thought besides wondering why he was let go.

  10. This really sucks. I was afraid of that 'letdown' game with being undefeated. We are a better team than Texas A & M but we just don't have it together today.

About 2 and a half minutes left now and were down by 18.

Bring on the NCAA tournament. We're still going to be a number one seed and like what was said above I'd like to see us lose now than later.

    Go Lady Huskers.

  11. Actually we have one of the fastest offensive teams in NU history coming back if you go by 10 yard dash. Paul is the fastest ever in that category at any position, Kinnie and Paul put up the two best times ever in that category for WR's, Helu tied the RB record and Green tied the QB record.

Speed is not the issue on the offensive side of the ball, it's staying healthy and finding an identity, it all starts up front in 2010.

I think speed is always an issue whether it's offense or defense. We have adequate speed on offense but besides maybe Paul we have no one who is a threat every time they catch or run with the ball to go the distance. Again I think our speed is adequate I just wish we had 'that guy' who was a threat every single time he got the ball to break loose and pull away from people. I think speed is always an issue in today's world of college football.

  12. I agree with the speed issue also. It is pretty much non existant on offense besides Niles Paul who was really the only one close to being a game breaker last season. I thought Currenski Gilleylen might have been someone to get excited about last year but that never really panned out.

  13. I can't understand guys like this that get a chance to go to a good college for free, but don't want to work hard. All he has to do is play football. They even get all the extra help they might need like tutoring to make sure they can get through school. I would KILL to have an opportunity like that. Instead, I'm working almost full-time while going to school to pay for books, tuition, and rent. Oh, and don't forget all the student loans I will be paying off for 200 years after I graduate... dry.gif

The thing is MIKE, guys like Williams have never had to work hard for anything in his life. He got by on talent alone, so he never developed any kind of work ethic. In high school, he was the big fish in the little pond and probably was never pushed to any limits of his ability. When these guys get to Div I colleges, everybody on the team is either as good or better than they are, and for the first time in their lives, they have to work hard just to keep their spot. College football is full of adversity and some players just can't deal with it.

He was also 18 years old. Immature as well.

  14. I expect both Rex and Roy to be almost 50/50 in that regard this year.

That is one heck of a backfield. I think Rex will get the ball more this season which will mean a little less wear and tear on Helu too.

  15. Can someone tell me why some of the scouts think McCoy is better than Suh? I don't remember seeing any tape of McCoy fighting through triple teams and making the plays that Suh did so consistently. Oh well. Let them think what they want. I can't wait to see where Suh lands...

  16. I think just seeing first hand some of the play calls he made this season convinced me he really isn't all that great of an offensive coordinator. Trying far too much in my opinion to give Zac Lee the ball on a called qb run plays. All but forgetting the tight end this season when the rest of our receivers were dropping balls and being shuffled from first team to scout team and vice versa. In the article he talked about having to play to your teams strengths. Personally I didn't think he did a very good job of this last season.
