  1. Just spoke to my cuz in Loomis, NE, and he recently talked with former Loomis standout & current Husker CB Lance Thorell about how the Huskers' winter workouts are going so far.

Thorell told my cuz they are being pushed harder than ever before (Lance is a Jr, so he's been through two season with Pelini, plus a redshirt with Callahan). During the first days of the workouts, Thorell said he's never seen so many guys puke b/c of the effort they're putting out. Guys at all levels are motivated, competitive and pushing themselves to the max.

I don't know about you, but this is what I like hear. Something tells me this 2010 team will be the most physical we've seen in quite some time.

    Love to hear that!!!

Cool story. Makes me think of how our defense seemed to never get tired last season too. That is awesome to hear!

  2. Nebraska has a chance to end a bad streak in the Big 12: They have yet to defeat Texas in the regular season. (Yes, they did win a Big 12 Championship game against TX, but I want to focus on regular season.) These are what I refer to as "O-fers". There aren't many other O-fers left in the Big 12.

Baylor has 3 with Oklahoma, Nebraska, and Texas Tech. Not only do they have the notoriety of having the most O-fers, they also are the only team with inter-division O-fers.

Iowa State has 2, being Oklahoma and Texas.

Kansas and Nebraska each have one with Texas.

Otherwise, all other Big 12 schools have defeated each team at least one other time in regular season conference play.

Let's end the O-fer we have with Texas! ut.gif

To beat Texas in regular season play would be just awesome. Hoping I can be there in person too.

To beat Texas, Oklahoma, Missouri, or any of the better teams at any time is awesome.

We have yet to beat Texas in regular season Big 12 play... Beating all three goes without saying.

  4. Wow. I am really surprised at the negative Gill vibe going on in this thread. Buffalo won a combined FIVE games from 2002 through 2005 until Gill came along and all anyone can do is focus on his 5-7 record the year after his team won the MAC Championship. Gill is a born leader not to mention being groomed/mentored by our very own Coach Osborne who has been and still is a huge influence on him. I think a lot of parents will feel really good about sending their kids to play for him also.

I wish Gill all the best. I think Kansas has themselves a true class act as their head coach.

  5. Q: Does that explain your conservative game plan against Texas?

A: Absolutely. Considering the pieces of the puzzle we had, now how are we going to make this work? You play to the strength of your team.

Thanks for the article. It's nice to hear we'll be trying some new things this year but I found it interesting that Shatel asked him if we'd be seeing more out of our fulbacks this season instead of our tight ends who weren't utilized nearly enough last year and were clearly one of the strenths of our team receiving wise.

  6. My prediction for 2010 - Lee starts every game & Green gets considerable PT in preparation for 2011, while Carnes redshirts (exactly what we wish we could've done with Green).

My prediction for 2011 - PT in '09 & '10 pay off for Green as he becomes solid offensive leader. Carnes works his way past Spano & becomes the backup to Green. He gets some PT in blowout wins but nothing more. (small note - we get Turner who redshirts).

My prediction for 2012 - Green is a senior & he is the man. He knows the offense like the back of his hand & plays with confidence and flare as the field general we recruited him to be. Carnes continues his role as backup but gets considerably more PT as a soph. (Turner is solid competition for Carnes. These two will definitely duke it out for the top spot in 2013.)

My prediction for 2013 - Carnes' experience with the offense, precision passing & athletic ability get him the nod over soph Turner.

I know you are just predicting but I really enjoyed reading this! Good stuff!

  7. If Carnes can play up to his potential the job is his to lose after next season.

I dont mean to be rude but I strongly disagree. Cody Green will have this team for no less than two seasons.

Don't worry about it. We all have different opinions. The cool thing is (hopefully) one of these guys in the near future will develop/step up what have you and hopefully become a quarterback we can rely on and maybe even become someone exciting to watch. Carnes is my pick easily (in 2011) but if it's not someone else's I definitely don't take offense to that.

To me Green has a lot to prove next season coupled with Lee coming back healthy. Unless he makes great, great strides and Lee plays more or less like he did last year I don't see Green being our man next season. I want to see a lot of improvement out of Green but if we don't well...

Either way GO BIG RED. I am glad we have so many possible options now at quarterback. Martinez, Spano, Lee, Carnes, Green, Turner (in 2011), Washington.

My pick again is Carnes after this upcoming season but either way it is definitely going to be interesting...

  8. After reviewing some of the expectations that people have set for the 2010 Husker season; if Carnes is under center as the starting QB we will not be where we want to be as a program next year. JMHO

    I couldnt agree more

yeah.gif But looking to 2011 (if Carnes does redshirt next year), it looks like he has the intangibles to be the leader our offense needs. Check out this more in-depth article from today's OWH & you'll see what I mean.

My fav part of the article...

Carnes won 39 games in four seasons. The last one, 28-20 on Dec. 11 over St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale, snapped the 37-game winning streak of the two-time defending 5A Florida champion and the No. 1 high school team nationally, according to USA Today.

I read that too. The thing I like also is he did all of this in Florida's largest class so he's played (and practiced) against top notch competition. If Carnes can play up to his potential the job is his to lose after next season.

    I liked this part:

More than 10 Manatee quarterbacks transferred to other schools during Carnes' reign.
  9. I'm glad we got Carnes, but gonna have to agree with EZ-E that Turner looks better on film. and he's a grade less developed.

Turner looks good but I'm still sticking with Carnes. Also the video is footage of a single game. Does anyone know who that was against? He definitely wasn't hurting for running lanes either. I respect your opinion and I think he's a great quarterback but Carnes made way to many plays under pressure with the pocket collapsing and consistently hit too many receivers on the run for me to ignore anyway. However may the best man win. Nebraska's in a win/win situation having these two guys on the roster.

I take it you didn't watch the whole clip? It's 20 min. long and there are different games on there the longer you watch the footage. Just be patient.

Yep. I watched the whole thing. One thing is for sure. Whoever becomes the starter down the road is going to be breaking down some defenses.

Either way I'm looking forward (I can't wait) to seeing both of these guys.

  10. I'm glad we got Carnes, but gonna have to agree with EZ-E that Turner looks better on film. and he's a grade less developed.

Turner looks good but I'm still sticking with Carnes. Also the video is footage of a single game. Does anyone know who that was against? He definitely wasn't hurting for running lanes and for the most part his offensive line was eating their def line for lunch. I respect your opinion and I think he's a great quarterback but Carnes made way to many plays under pressure with the pocket collapsing and consistently hit receivers on the run not to mention the plays he made with his feet for me to ignore. However may the best man win. Nebraska's in a win/win situation having these two guys on their roster.

edit: I see after about 20 plays they finally switch highlights to another team. It looks like they replay the same play 3 times also.

  11. Good topic.

I think leading into spring ball I'll be looking into the Offense more than the defense. I'd like to see these thing develope on the Offensive side of the ball:

    - More physical Offensive Lineman who love to pancake people and I hope Hardrick will bring that intensity with him which he has shown as a Juco and the other guys will pick that up.

    - Develope all of our QB's into great athletes to the point that all of them could be our starter. I'd like to see Green, Spano, Washington, Martinez, Kellogg Jr. to all emerge and prove to the coaches that once our starter goes down that place one of these guys into the game we'll feel comfortable that that person will lead us to a scoring drive and a win.

    - Want to see more WR's emerge into a starting roll and learning to be more physical and catching the ball. Niles Paul surprised a lot of us in the Holiday Bowl and both Cooper and Kinnie are now developing into a WR as a go to guy.

    - I'd like to see more formations than just that stupid zone read shotgun formation. I like what I saw during the Holiday Bowl and the Wildcat formation surprised everybody and was very effective.

I'm not to worried about our defense because Bo has shown us that he can move players around to fill in those gaps and to get the most out of that player.

    :yeah

  12. Zac Lee- How is a healthy Zac Lee with a full season's experience behind him going to perform. That will be interesting to see.

Cody Green- I will be looking to see how much improvement he shows if any.

Offensive line- Yoshi. I'm interested to see how next year's unit fair's. In my mind Barney is on the hot seat.

Playcalling- Will Watson still try to run Zac Lee the way he did in 09? Will Watson somehow remember that we actually have fairly good tight ends that can catch the football? Wildcat formation?

Defense- I will be watching the safety position and linebacker position's the most. I am not so worried about the defensive line.

  13. Have you seen this guys ability to find open receivers as he scrambles out of the pocket while he is on the run? He also makes decisions fast (something Lee lacked last semester) and because of his speed and ability to change directions quickly defenses will have to load the box to eliminate all the weapons we have back there... leaving tons of WR open and Carnes with the space he needs to run out of the pocket and execute a pass on the fly. BAM TOUCHDOWN!!! Just like Ganz did last year.

That is against HS talent.. thats not saying a lot. Lee could do that in HS too.. college is completly different.

With all due respect Zac Lee in his entire life has not ran with the football outside the pocket or all alone on a football field with no one else around for that matter the way Carnes has. There isn't a more stiffer looking runner than Zac Lee.

Doesn't look too stiff here at the 0:24 mark......

Fixed. You forgot to bold the last part of my sentence.

Also where is this purported Jamal Turner tape you speak of? From what I've seen of Turner on youtube I'm sticking with Carnes. Easily.

  15. The only thing I worry about is having a staff that is really good at knowing defense talent when they see it obviously. I'm not saying they aren't good at evaluating offense talent but I think it's safe to say coach Pelini, Carl and Papuchis for example are defensive guys. I have faith in our staff to get good offensive talent but at the same time it does cross my mind when thinking of our current recruits and potential recruits skill position wise.

Coach Beck will pull in some nice offensive talent in 2011. Bank on it. He's a savvy recruiter.

I don't doubt Beck's savvy but call me cautiously optimistic when it comes to recruiting. I'm not banking on anything. Hopeful yes. Optimistic? Yes. Time will tell? Yes....

  17. Judging strictly from both QB's films, I've concluded that Turner is a true dual-threat in every sense of the word. Like one recruiting evaluator from Texas said, "he's a wizard when the ball is in his hands." However, Carnes is good too, no disrespect to him. I would be happy having him on the team too, but Turner is that dude.

Well I hope you are right and I don't mean to put sour grapes on people's excitement of any recruit of ours. I honestly hope he does well. Apparently Turner had one game where he went 21-22 with over 400 yards passing and 6 touchdowns.

Scout.com has him throwing for 13 td's with 10 interceptions last season. Personally anytime I see a quarterback with almost as many interceptions as they have touchdowns it just doesn't make me think too highly of them as a passer anyway.

I am not sold on Turner or any recruit honestly until they prove it on the field but if he can develop and live up to the hype I will most definitely be ecstatic about that. The botton line is I hope he can be the player he's hyped up to be!

  18. regardless what happens on LOI signing day this week, don't forget to celebrate the ones who do make it official on Wednesday. It's easy to get caught up in the hype and speculation of 4 & 5 star players leading up to signing day, but the ones we really should be grateful for are the ones who have already stuck by their oral commitments throughout the long recruiting process.

Here's to hoping we get Owa & Cooper on Wednesday. But if not, then all we can do is wish those young men luck and turn our attention to the ones who wanted to be N. I feel like the 2010 recruiting class is underrated with the current crop we have now, and I'm excited as hell to see what will become of these kids in the future.

BTW, I'm still sticking to my original signing day prediction that I made in another thread.

    Owa = N

    Cooper = N

Carnes = Out <This was my original prediction. I never felt like he would come here because of our staff's late pursuit for him. I had him staying with USF before they pulled his scholly, but I also suggested afterwards that I wouldn't be surprised if he went to WKU.>

Well said and you got the Carnes prediction right too. I just hope you get the other two right!

  19. When I saw that Jamal Turner threw for 13 touchdowns last season with 10 interceptions I honestly got fairly unexcited about his signing pretty quickly. I would think that his signing had to effect Carnes decision.

We just lost a highly touted quarterback recruit to Western Kentucky. I would have rather had Carnes than Turner...

  20. 1. Tommie Frazier

    2. Turner Gill

    3. Jerry Tagge

    4. Joe Ganz

    5. Scott Frost

    6. Steve Taylor

    7. Eric Crouch

    8. David Humm

Everyone seems to forget the leadership that Jerry Tagge brought...so I had to vote for him.

Joe Ganz above Eric Crouch huh? Interesting..

He's not in my top 8 or 9 either. Put Crouch under center on any team within the last 3, 4, or even 5 years. No 1,000 yard rushing season, he would actually be forced to pass (shudder) and most definitely there's no Heisman trophy either. He's number one on the all time crybaby list though. A solid number one.
