In the article Ben says he weighed 260lbs at the end of last season and he is at 278lbs now.

Yeah that puts the timeline a little longer than the 2 months in the post that I quoted.  I can easily see someone gaining 20 LBs after the season is over. I'm sure most players run lean during the season just because its a grueling process with playing and school, but there is no way that is 20 Lbs of muscle in that time. Gaining pure muscle weight takes a long time. Especially for someone who was already pretty jacked.

Pretty sure 20 lbs of muscle in 2 months is unpossible.

Yes its outlandish to say the least.  Stille already looked pretty jacked too, so im just gonna take it as some posturing and see how it plays out in the fall.

Riley is a horrible head coach and that explains why Nick Gates could clearly find his way to the cafeteria but not to the weight room? Riley’s main deficit in terms of S&C seems to have been not requiring the players to work out if they didn’t want to. Gates’ main deficit in terms of character and work ethic was not working out and keeping himself in shape regardless.

If every player was self motivated then we would need a lot less from these coaches. A large percentage of people will slack off when allowed to without consequence and I'm sure that number is even higher for college aged kids.  What I took from most of the reports about him, was that he didnt want to spend another year working without getting paid. Anyone who claims to not understand that sentiment is a liar.

I see Nelson at OLB for sure.  Snodgrass most likely OLB, but they are leaving that open for now.  Dixon is already on scholarship and is a hybrid Safety/OLB, so I'm not sure if I would exactly count him towards the OLB numbers for '19.

That said, I think they'll try to get at least 1 more top end guy (Pappoe would be great) to add some talent at the spot.  I wouldn't be surprised to see a bit of attrition at the LB spot too.

So what happens if we someone land Pappoe and Henrich?  I guess in a 34 base thats not the worst problem we could have.

No. But if the S&C was bad for linemen I can't imagine it was good for QBs.

With the risk of bringing in another tangent to this thread, I don't think the problem was the actual S&C staff, but rather with the enforcement by coaches and buy in for some players. Gebbia by all reports was putting in quite a bit of work, so I would be confident to assume he kept up on his lifts.

  6. I'm getting way ahead of things here, but if we somehow turn it around and get back to competing for the big bowls I could see this coming back to bite us a few times. Playing a team that usually isn't ranked, but has proven that they can play above their weight. Combine that with being the last game of the year where they got nothing to lose and beating us would make their season. Obviously at this point I think everyone would just be happy to be in that scenario though.

I will also add that I think games like this are what make college football so great so I'm all for it.

    I'm seeing last year's recruiting class ranked on 247's composite as #23 with 224.33 points (20 recruits, 6 4-star)

    https://nebraska.247sports.com/Season/2017-Football/Commits

If we add 4-7 more, and the most likely at this point are:

    Robinson

    JBB

    Taylor

    Tago

plugging those into the class calculator gives a score of 224.54 (20th right now, but #23 using last year's final numbers).  So Riley's best class would be the "basement" for Frost's first transition class?

I'll predict 20-23.  Excellent, given the circumstances.

Yep you're correct, somehow I looked at 2016 and missed 2017. Still like you said its pretty crazy that this should be Frost's worst class. I will also add that while this does happen, Elijah Blades dropping from that class would drop it down to 215 points and 27th.

If you look at Riley's transitional class it sits 4 or so points below what we currently are at and well below where we are looking to finish.  This could be revisionist history, but it also seemed like he had a much stronger class to start with since Bo didn't have a terrible season that year. Pretty much all of the big names Riley had this year had one foot out the door by the time Frost was hired.

Feeling pretty good about this right now:koolaid2:

  8. So I have some genuine question here: What can/should a training staff be doing to watch out for this? If it can be caused by acute over-training wouldn't that be really hard to detect? How do you tell someone is over-lifting in a single session in which you are training to exhaustion either way?

  9. So if we add, Palmer, JBB, Washington, Jones, and Bell, that puts us at ~231 points on 247 and ranked 17th currently, but probably closer to 20th after the other classes sort out.  Our class last year(Riley's best?) was 216 points and ranked 26th, and that included 2 4 stars that never even put on pads.  That just seems insanely good for a transitional class that he took over with like 7 recruits and coached a NY6 bowl at the same time.

:koolaid2:   Man this would be huge for us to get some production out of this unit again.  We have the players for it. It was so nice when teams had to gameplan around DPE. Most college punters cant handle directional kicks well enough to not give up a ton of yards.

6-7 WR, depending on how you view Jones, is a lot.

Probably higher than normal classes will be, but it seems like this is a depth bulding class.  This offense doesnt work without a lot of skill position players ready to go. Running at least 3 WR on every play and up tempo, we are gonna have a lot of WR take snaps every game.
