Different play, he was talking about hitting the option pass. Which was a nice throw but I think an easier read, although sounds like Coleman isn't technically the first look on that play.

Ah ok. So we ran that play in the first half?  I missed it.

The underneath target is a better target and (probably) the primary read.

If you're saying that the DB was to be expected to run with the deep route, that's all the more reason to throw the shorter route, as it was going to be wide open if the deep DB did that.  Fidone is even with the underneath defender as well, so the same argument about being able to run away from a defender he's even with would apply there as well (which he did).

The DB just made a great play and the pass was off-target.

Maybe he was talking about a different play but I thought in his presser Rhule said that he missed that read but came back in the 2nd half and they ran it again and he hit correctly.

Seems like a winning formula and reason for hope for the future considering every other team on that list (except Arizona?) is either ranked or has recently been ranked.

Arizona actually has a good case for being ranked too. They are a solid football team.

100%. Rhule has got to get an impact transfer this off-season.

What I can see is the mentality of our guys changing. They are fighting harder than I’ve seen since.. probably the Bo era.

    I’m optimistic.

I feel like we have all been burned too many times to have true optimism now, but the mentality of the team especially the defense seems to be changing. I think that Illinois game felt like one we would have collapsed and lost in previous years.

For a second I thought Rhule was a genius on Friday as was going to let them score so everyone would be happy that we won a one score game

  5. I see this same thing with a lot of early success in coaching now there is one key thing they almost all seem to have in common. They bring a QB from the a previous stop. Rhule obviously couldn't do this and with a good QB we probably have 1 loss right now and 2 at the most.

It seems like his short sidearm passes are better, like what Mahomes does on the run....it's the long pocket passes that look kind of bizarre. I bet they've actually considered all of these things we're talking about.

Oh yeah there is no doubt the coaching staff is aware of the issue and if there was a fix they could do for this year they would. Yeah I think his sidearm is better because that's natural to him now, but it's causing too many knocked down passes.

  7. 6 minutes ago, LennynSquiggy said:

Those same people ignore the fact that he doesn't throw sidearm every pass.

And QBs with good mechanics throw side arm sometimes also. Sidearm throws are not his only issue with mechanics. Those non side arm passes he throws are very inaccurate. At this point he will default back to side arm naturally and would take a ton of work to make that not the case if it's even possible, and at the same time you would have to be improving all the other aspects of his throwing motion first and foremost his footwork.

Remember that zone read/bubble pass spread triple option play NU ran with T Magic, Rex/Ameer, Kenny/Jamal Turner????  That was good s#!t.  I think.....think HH could handle those reads/throws

Has Harberg ever pitched a ball though? I honestly can't recall one.

Ok…then why isn’t the stat just “points off turnovers”?  That’s simple to see.

There are one hell of a lot of variables in this stat that make it odd.

Well yeah there are variables in every stat. No stat stands alone without context. I would guess it's presented in this way because that number of touchdowns would indicate that almost all points against us were after turnovers. This number seems more digestible to that point because points off turnovers may not mean anything to someone not knowing how a stat like that ranks nationally. Obviously they should have included more context to this, but I think as a general point seeing only 2 TDs not scored after turnovers seems pretty low.

    That’s an odd stat.

I think the point being made is that the other team is mostly scoring off turnovers, just another direction to look at it from. That is a stat that is looked when deciding how good a defense is because its generally easier to score off a turnover.

Along with DB’s, WR’s, Tackles, Guards, Centers, and……with all the advantages of the NFL.   People change and get better or they don’t.   Doesn’t alter the fact that change was needed.

Wtf are you talking about. It's not about what is needed. It's about what is possible. None of those other positions are QB and comparing general improvement to fixing a QBs mechanics is just false equivalency. If fixing a QB could just be done then NFL and College would be full of good ones. Your examples out of all the QBs that have failed out of the NFL are one that is a collosal bust and got traded for peanuts after spending 3 1sts on him and a QB who had already threw for 700 yards in a game in college and did not need huge changes.

HH could slowly improve over years possibly, but that would take much more time than a college coach has with a player so it would have to be done on his own in the off-season.

How did that work out for Lance though? Mahomes has arguably the greatest arm talent ever.

I think we can make a long list of NFL QBs that got drafted and "just needed to improve mechanics" that ended up not being able to do it with all the advantages of the NFL including unlimited coaches and coaching time.

We can compete with or be crushed by anyone left on our schedule. That is how bad/sporadic the division is. Even the wildcats beat the gophers by playing one good quarter of football. Oof.

I just had to go check on that final score after reading your post. I turned that game off assuming it over way early. How did Minnesota lose that game?

Good stuff. Yeah that tunnel screen (I think it was) was such great execution by everybody involved.

I thought Fidone would break some of those. I don't really love some of our slow-developing passing plays where the target is basically just two yards out from the line of scrimmage in the flat. Defenses are all over it. Either quick hit it way outside, or just go downfield.

A lot of these plays to the flat out of the heavy sets just aren't fooling anybody, but Satterfield clearly loves them.

Yeah its hard to say if he has much option. Every deep pass we have tried all year was thrown poorly, and both these QBs are a pretty suspect in their ability to read defenses in the intermediate passing game.

  15. How long has it been since we had screen passes that actually worked? Its a big difference on offense to have those executed and working properly in terms of keeping the defense honest, and they called 2 tonight at the perfect times for key first downs.

I cant tell if NIU just tackles extremely well or if we just dont have the players that can make a single player miss or break a tackle when needed. Probably a little bit of both, but it seems like getting players like that would have led to some bigger plays tonight.

Smart Alec. Kirby Smart. I'm seeing the connection you're intending to make here! Isn't it true that you nearly caused an evacuation of your family home trying to make grits with stinky Raclette? What a goof...It seems that you have the powers of reasoning of a wooden post!!!

Back on topic. What if instead of a ball, the QB views them as options to throw to and defenders get lost in his field of vision?

That cheese was a terrorist attack by someone from the north. The fact that Rhule hasnt thought of simple illusions like that to trick the defense is good reason to fire him already and move on.

I'm really kind of sick of this type of statement.  We have NO clue what the conversation are behind the scenes as it relates to Grant and fumbling.  Stop speaking your myths into reality.

For all we know Grant was hurt last week.

For all we know Grant packed his bags and quit the team because he didn't want to play anymore

For all we know Grant and Rhule have an agreement in place, setup by Grant to not play until he doesn't fumble once in practice all week.

    Who knows, we certainly don't.

The funny thing too is someone said accountability and then like a virus it caught on as the term for what people are upset about this time.

As far as I have seen no one is refusing to take responsibility for what happened. No one is blaming someone else and they aren't making excuses. So at the very least accountability is the incorrect term for what they mean to convey.

Yeah disregard the 2 years he was a full time starter that put him in the NFL. He was also a walk-on so Kirby didn’t have to do s#!t to get him

At the time when he was starting the season before winning a championship his first senior year those stats would be all Smart had to go on. You are saying stats at that level should tell a coach he will never be good.
