  1. I have the Lindys NFL mag too, that's the only NFL mag i get every year b/c they have a comment on EVERY player- even some of the free agents. As far as I know Davis was still with the team when that mag was published so that's why he is listed in there. Like i said the transaction was hardly reported by anyone. In fact the only place I saw it was on Scout.com believe it or not. as for Vanden Bosch, he is with the Titans and so far they seem to be quite happy with him. I don't have comments on every game as Jeff did but here is at least a list of this weeks games w/ Huskers: Schedule sorry for the lack of exact dates/times but just look at local listings to see if any of these games are shown in your area, etc, etc. NFL Network is showing quite a few preseason games if you have DirectTV. As of yesterday I was still fixing #s and names on there but it should be correct now. also Incognito is listed with the Rams but he certainly won't be playing b/c he hasn't signed yet and he's injured anyway.
  2. I already made one NFL Huskers post today. which should be my limit but i hadn't seen this article from HuskerPedia yet. i realize i'm probably more of an NFL Husker nut than most people but innacuracy on the subject is still a pet peeve. (mostly thanks to the Big XII managing to short change Nebraska on NFL participants lists each year) I'm compulsive so i can't resist a nitpicking rundown: "GREEN BAY: Green Bay has Pro Bowl RB Ahman Green and DB Erwin Swiney." Swiney is no longer with the Packers. "Keyuo Craver is also on the Saints roster, but he’s kinda had some, uh, trouble with controlled substances." unfortunatly most of that is true... except for the "on the Saints roster" part they chose not to resign him and who can blame them! he's currently with the Edmonton Eskimos. "NEW YORK: DE Trevor Johnson and RB Josh Davis." (Jets) Davis was cut by the Jets but for some reason it wasn't even reported on many transaction wires. "ATLANTA: Williams and Johnson again." Eric Johnson was recently signed by the Cardinals. "Friday, August 26, Pittsburgh at Washington (FOX) A no-Huskers-on-either-team shutout." hey, where's the love for Dahrran Diedrick?! he's with the 'skins. "Chargers have DL Ryan Bingham, DB Jerrell Pippens, LB Carlos Polk (who’s recovering from an injury), and OL Toniu Fonoti" I believe Polk was already placed on IR (again) for the season. bad luck would be an understatement for the poor guy. and anyone who saw Monday night's preseason game may remember Pippens INT that sealed the victory- for the Chicago Bears. "San Diego starts the preseason with more Huskers than anyone" minus Pippens they have 3, as do the Raiders and Rams.
  3. This is a *just in case you missed it* on recent NFL transactions involving Huskers. First, going back to late July, former undrafted FA/Raider/Falcon Eric Johnson signed with the Cardinals. He was a big hit with the Raiders during the BC and Gruden years but was eventually let go. last year he didn't do much with the Falcons except on special teams. then TWO Huskers quit/retired from their respective teams. 1) according to sports illustrated's site, Josh Sewell "was placed on the exempt list after his agent informed the team he plans on retiring". and 2) undrafted FA Lornell McPherson cleaned out his locker and left Panthers' training camp. the last time i can recall one of our guys leaving training camp was Matt Davison (Buffalo Bills). One that seemed to get a bit more notice on some Husker forums was the Bucs signing Steve Kriewald. He had had a tryout with them in April but didn't get a contract- until now. there are a couple pictures of Kriewald in camp on wireimage.com but they're quite small. look for #41: http://www.wireimage.com/GalleryListing.as...0639&evntI=1493 last (for now), the Rams signed John Parrella. Its the twilight of his career but Good luck to him! anything has to be better for a once near-Pro Bowler than playing backup behind a fat a$$ like warren sapp. also FWIW Incognito still hasn't signed with the Rams. He's not a priority though as he would likely miss this upcoming season with an injury anyway. apparently he's working out in Arizona, at a facility that offers him better recovery equipment than anything the Rams have.
  4. actually they're exactly the same. according to sportsknowhow.com, NCAA, NFL and CFL goal posts are "10 feet high and 18 feet, 6 inches wide". the CFL certainly can't compare to the general talent level in the NFL. not even close. but as for kickers? in the CFL its the exact SAME thing, down to the inch. only maybe a little colder. and the end zones are something like 20 yards deep. I would love to find a concrete reason for Sandro's amazing improvement in his post-Husker career but a difference goal post width ain't it. for now, my guess is still that Canadian weather. maybe it just wasn't cold enough for him in Lincoln as for Benard. if he has a chance in the AFL he'll have to learn an offensive position in their ironman system. maybe fullback?
  5. http://www.nbc.com/nbc/Tommy_Lee/ maybe some info here. i for one am definately tuning in. if it wasn't Nebraska though, i don't know that i'd be interested. i'm not really a reality TV fan anyway.
  6. Runza. no question. though i've had bad luck with them running out of those things by halftime. a couple other random folks and i went clear around the stadium in search for a vendor with Runzas but everyone was out of 'em. FWIW Jake: http://runza.com/whatzarunza.htm we actually had a few Nebraskans in western Colorado looking into putting a franchise out here and had quite a few people interested... but alas "Restaurant locations within a defined territory encompassing a 400-mile radius of Lincoln" whatever. (inconsiderate bastards) they have one in Fort Collins (at least the last time i was there). how far is that from lincoln anyway? oh well. they're not that hard to make in a home kitchen. maybe pilsbury crescent dough for the bread. a little spice with the cabbage and hamburger and shove it in the oven. not exactly the same but close enough.
  7. and the Jag fans were EATING this up on their forum! "wow, love having this guy" "pressure bursts pipes- don't know what it means but sounds great!" etc etc. i like seeing enthusiasm for one of our guys.... but little do they know. Benard seems like a good guy but if you're that close to living in your car then exactly what were you doing when you were in COLLEGE? IMO one of two things will happen with Crunk J. He will re-enact what he did at NU: great practices, great one-liner trash talking, then a disapearing act in actual games. OR he will be another Sandro DeAngelis. terrible at NU but somehow great at the "next" level. I would anticipate the former but then i'm reminded of DeAngelis and so you'd have to think anything of that nature is possible.
  8. Tommy Lee was on Jay Leno to plug his new album and the Tommy Goes to College reality show. for those that didn't see it.. there wasn't much but it is something. The show's band played There Is No Place Like Nebraska as Lee was introduced (can't say i saw that coming). Most of the conversation was about Lee's kids and Pamela (SP?). They played a clip from the upcoming reality show where Lee is talking to Harvey Pearlman. Lee comments how beautiful the campus is and Harvey says that we're very proud of it.... so "don't trash it." He said his parents had wanted him to go to college but he had a recording contract before he finished high school and never went. Lee also named some other candidate schools: LA, Miami, Texas A&M. the mention of A&M brought a hoot from someone in the crowd, Tommy looked a little off-guard but flashed the Horns hand-sign . can't imagine that would have gone over too well with the Aggie fans in the audience. He sounded as if Nebraska coming on board as The School was what convinced him to do it. Nebraska was perfect b/c it had an extra "fish out of water" element that would have been missing from LA schools and Miami. Looks like the Husker band and stadium will get quite a few shots in the show. school officials said the University is portrayed positively so... here's a question, though it may be a stretch-- anyone think it may have any impact on recruiting?
  9. 1995 vs OU. 35-0 win but it was the last Big 8 game ever. the fans did "storm the field to take down the goal posts". however, the posts never came down- they had 'em swaying though. apparently they had just installed take-down proof posts and they held up. While i agree with the 'we should never take them down b/c we should expect to win' mentality. if fans went for the posts in 93 and 95 after beating OU even when we certainly expected wins in those games- what would be wrong with taking them down (or at least trying to) should the Huskers beat OU this year? and also maybe the next time we beat Texass in Memorial Stadium.
  10. agreed. as i said above the coaching carousel spins faster in the NFL than it does in college, these guys can't cling to the DC's or Head Coaches they like and then just not play for the ones they don't like. If they keep that attitude, Skers, you're absolutely right, they won't last long. but they are young enough that they can grow up and realize that it doesn't work that way. but they better learn that now or they may never learn it. in the NFL or in a real job (they don't call 'em 'bosses' for nothin'). of course then there's the NBA where KBryant can bitch and whine and get his way. and then players like Charles Woodson whining to Al Davis in Oakland pushed BC out. so come to think of it, sometimes they DO get their way... somehow i don't think either Fabian or Bullocks will have that kind of influence though.
  11. In the footsteps of Devaney, Alvarez is going to retire and the end of the season but will stay on as the AD at Wisconsin. for now, there's a video here: http://nbc15.madison.com/sports http://www.jsonline.com/badger/fb/jul05/344403.asp DC Bret Bielema will take over as head coach.
  12. out of curiosity, was there any punishment for it in the marines? even a slap on the wrist? or was it just so *normal* that it didn't matter? i'm not suggesting this should go unpunished and i would trust BC to handle it appropriately. but there are worse things. it wasn't a girlfriend or a bar patron or a customer at an Oklahoma Dennys. People who've had roomates know the urge to beat the crap out of them sometimes. or maybe they were just trying to play out their favorite scenes from Fight Club
  13. it is too early to tell but from the evidence (though limited) that we have so far- BC isn't going to take any charity cases or 2nd, 3rd, 4th chances. I can understand TO wanting to give Phillips another chance for the sake of helping the kid and keeping him off the street. it didn't work of course, but Osborne didn't have the view of retrospect that we have now. but as much as i respect Solich as a person- I'm puzzled as to why Incognito was given so many chances, even when Cotton alledgedly wanted him gone. as for the defensive players that didn't "buy into the system". i still question Coz but i use those guys as a way of defending him sometimes. Its kind of hard to coach when some of your KEY players aren't playing top notch. on one hand, I too am glad they're gone b/c if they weren't going to play the system then what good are they?? You go out on the field and shut up and play. on the other hand i hold no ill will towards them. They had three DCs in as many years and they fell in love with Bo Peep and didn't get over it and they apparently didn't take to Coz too well (which sounds like a number of Husker fans!)
  14. Love the underrated pick in Warfield. but to be fair to Newk, he wasn't overrated until after injuries. His frosh year he was every bit as advertised. It was not living up to what he did that freshman year that maybe makes him "overrated". He showed flashes every now and then after that (last minute catch vs CU in 2000). but not very often. as for Crouch- He was the drug that kept us believing everything was A-ok with the future of Husker football. IMO it started to fall apart as soon as McBride retired. Crouch allowed us to be naive for a couple more years. Incognito is another "overrated" nominee that i agree with. the guy was probably the best lineman we've had recently. but unfortunatly that's not really saying a whole lot. He's certainly no Shields/Wiegert/Stai/Dish-- well you know. was it Aaron Graham that said something about Incognito not being able to start on some of the 90s lines?? someone may know the actual comment and the former player, i can't even remember.
  15. well, at least FW is already off to a better start than Booker or Bruce Pickens-- he wasn't drafted by the Falcons. BTW. 4 down 0 to go. Bullocks is in. 4-year deal. http://www.neworleanssaints.com/newsroomar...?articleid=1509 I know how you feel but at the same time, the guy never hid that he was looking at Nebraska as a $pringboard to the NFL so as to get his family out of the slum. If its only three years, fine. If he can help his family in that three years, more power to him. keep in mind though, booker never really showed anything but was able to stick around longer than three years. it prompted me to look up Keyuo Craver to see how long he lasted (in the NFL at least). the answer: 3 years. and the guy hardly played at all! i think he was suspended for more games than he actually played. mainly b/c of um -->
  16. 3 down, 1 to go: RI signs 3-year deal. http://www.stltoday.com/stltoday/sports/st...76?OpenDocument Booker was a completely different corner than FW. Those NFL over-doing-it rules would hurt a physical corner like Booker. the guy was drafted way too high to begin and never adjusted. Their play styles were different but one thing they do have in common- they were both picked too high. How Booker went at #11 is mind boggling, and not just in retrospect. I recall Mel Kiper having a fit on draft day. as for FW, he was a 2nd or 3rd rounder until he posted a blazing 40-time at the combine. apparently the Raiders don't realize that great 40-times don't always make for good football players. and the crazy SOBs actually Traded Up to get him! I think the guy will turn out better than Booker did (not saying much?). but he won't be the superstar that 1st round picks are expected to be. a solid backup maybe? a nickelbacker? of course anything could happen. predicting the success of draftees is probably only a little more accurate than, say, picking the success of recruits. Washington, IMO, has the tools and he has room to get a lot better (he'll need to). what he needs is good coaching. of course, not changing defensive schemes every year like he and others had to do at NU can't hurt
  17. 1) How long have you been a member of Husker Nation? since '94 2) What/who led you to The Nation? Family=Husker fans 3) Where are you from originally? Ogallala, NE. 4) Where do you live now? moved to Colorado in about 1989/90 5) Favorite Husker memory? Beating Miami in the 1995 OB. or the end of the 1997 Mizzou game. 6) Worst Husker memory? No facemask penalty against KSU in '98. getting beat is one thing, getting beat b/c the refs pitty the other team is another. Off the field though, watching the waning moments of Sportscenter when they announced that Berringer had died. 7) Number of home games attended? 9? (one per years since '95) 8) Number of away games attended? 4 (all vs CU) 9) Favorite Husker memorabilia/apparel? ?? I have a few things but nothing i'd really call a "favorite". though i do have a somewhat odd item- I was hiking in Colorado and found a rock shaped like the state of Nebraska (how could i resist picking that up). It was on a 14er called Mt. Lincoln no less. A few coats of red spray paint and it fit right in with the rest of the stuff. 10) Favorite place to watch a Husker game? (section in Memorial, bar, friends house etc.) My once-a-year Husker tix are in section 39. There are better seats in the stadium but i've only watched a game from there. (aside from TV of course) 11) Favorite all time player? Tommie Frazier. 12) WCO or Option? Whatever will get to the end zone. 13) Stevie Pederson or Billy Byrne? Pederson. $ Bill killed the macho, jersey-wearing Herbie after 1995 and replaced it with a pansy looking hick of a mascot and I've never been able to forgive him. 14) Lil Red or Herbie Husker? Herbie- with a large needle for Lil Red. 15) Favorite Husker play? same as JR5: Option playaction pass. the way Frazier often ran it: to perfection. 16) Favorite game-day beverage? none. 17) How did you find HuskerBoard? (referral source) Gooooogle.
  18. I know everyone's getting gung ho over PD but i liked: "Tyrell Spain is predicted to be the surprise of fall camp." surprise at WR or S? I'd prefer the latter. any positive surprises about help in the secondary is REALLY good news.
  19. minor correction: The Oakland Raiders signed top draft pick Fabian Washington to a five-year, $7.8 million contract on Tuesday three days before the team's first training camp practice NFL.com had their camp starting date as July 25th. so the other dates i had in the first post could be off as well (thanks for nuthin' NFL.com) Oh yeah, and it also mentions his actual signing... http://www.sportinglife.com/nfl/news/story...Washington.html
  20. I wouldn't exactly call these guys "set for life" either! and not just b/c of their spending habits. The average NFL career lasts 3 years. not exactly a "career" is it. Even the luckiest players usually can't play past the age of 35 and then what? they have years of actual LIFE left and the only job they've ever had involved beating the crap out of people. which doesn't work to well in the real world -- unless of course, you find a job as an "office linebacker": http://www.terribleterrytate.com/ a lot of these guys also end up with medical problem$$$ for the rest of their lives. apparently depression is an major issue among former players. The former Steelers OL that recently killed himself is an example of that. That is why the NFL emphasises learning programs to prepare players for their post-NFL careers. b/c they are anything BUT "set for life". And that's why is so stupid for players (cough UM Hurricanes cough) to blow off a FREE college education simply b/c they may play in the NFL for a few years. as for Fabian. In college, one of his problems was that he wasn't physical enough- but that may actually be an asset with the over-bearing (IMO) NFL rules!
  21. http://www.sptimes.com/2005/07/26/Bucs/Buc...each_agre.shtml Linebacker Barrett Ruud, the second-round pick from Nebraska, agreed to a five-year deal early Monday morning. Terms were not released, but Ruud is expected to average $950,000 and receive bonuses of more than $2-million. http://www.sacbee.com/content/sports/story...-14137071c.html Meanwhile, Raiders team spokesman Mike Taylor said Monday that Oakland was "really, very close" to signing Fabian Washington, the 23rd overall pick in the NFL draft, to a five-year contract. Washington's New York City-based agent Brian Mackler was en route to Oakland to complete the deal with Raiders senior personnel executive Mike Lombardi. Oakland started their training camp on the 25th but I think it was more of a moving-in day...? Tampa Bay's camp doesn't start until the 28th. Meanwhile. Incognito and Bullocks remain unsigned (like many other picks). Both their respective teams start camp on the 28th.
  22. just found this board! this seems like a decent place for 1st post. Tenn would be nice, but if it is to be an SEC team I'd say Alabama. Maybe Georgia or Auburn? ND, Penn State would be good of course but we've already been there and done that in recent years. According to HP the last time we played 'bama was in '77. CSU would be interesting, i respect Lubick and have and know quite a few CSU fans (so unlike CU fans!). but I doubt that would turn into a home/home series, just as when we played in 1996. Ohio? No thank you. can you imagine the tiring Solich vs BC wars that would come up between Husker fans on message boards before and after the game? no matter what the turnout, you'd have Solich haters and BC haters over-analyzing every last pointless detail and every play in the game as proof as to why their coach is/was better. not to mention we'd get the same criticism we get now for playing Maine.
