I think they are still pretty high on Hutmacher.

And Ruud has quietly done a great job with the ILB crew.  Heinrich and Reimer are playing well and Honas has already said he's coming back.

The LB crew didn't even understand their fits when Frost arrived.  Remember Minnesota?

    We're good.

It's got to be at DE. Nebraska needs a guy to get sacks, hurries, and cut stop a little more. Hutmacher isn't that type of player. Ruud and the defensive staff are safe in my eyes and quite frankly becoming an elite collections of coaches. But I am not judging based on piss poor performances. I am talking about making that 5-10% jump. The front seven collectively needs just a little more speed. Nebraska has a few guys who are just good enough to make the play they're being asked. We need one or two guys who can add splash to that.

One guy they need to reexamine during the offseason is Ty Robinson. He is too good to not be more of a factor. I watch him closely and imo I would start to have him drop weight. Ty at 285 with proper fundamentals should be a monster. At 310, he is lumbering around and tiring out.

  2. The offense has to figure out how to score at least two touchdowns in the first half in every game and I think they win more than they lose.

Defensively, we need talent improvement in real specific spots. DE and Middle linebacker. We need a little less stickiness and guys who can dictate the lines with a Damion Daniels type. Nick Heinrich is a good kid and solid. Still, he gives me dedrick young vibes. The kind of guy who is a step late and gets tackles after the first down.

  3. Based on everything we have seen thus far, Nebraska is the more battle tested team. They have played one more game and have played better opponents. They do match up pretty well, and their strength goes against our weakness.

Offensively we are going to present them with more fits than they have seen. Nebraska will negate their pass rush a bit by putting them in conflict most of the game. They will get their plays blitzing but it will bite when they get hit over the top or Adrian breaks one. The option is also going to negate their front quite a bit. I still think they will play pretty good on D and they will have a lot of good moments. Nebraska needs to find victories even in the stalled drives. Eat up clock when you can and find the minutes you can choke down to really limit their scoring opportunities. This inevitably changes the way Michigan will have to call the game and I don't think they want their QB's throwing 30+ against us.

This needs to be Nebraska's best game defensively for the year. Stop the run and you will like your chances. I want their young, inexperienced QB's throwing in obvious passing downs. When they do score, no big chunk plays. Make them earn it and use up their whole play sheet, while forcing them to eat up a ton of clock.

I like Michigan's team this year, and I rooted for them this past saturday. However, they will not be the best opponent we play this year and we have played one team that is better and one that could easily beat them. Look for Nebraska to try and build off the run game and see if this O-line can be just competent. If it does that, the game changes dramatically. Michigan will not be able to take as many chances knowing Nebraska can score as opposed to Wisconsin. Then let's see who plays better when uncomfortable.

Maybe, but it's such a blanket claim with so many unknown variables that it's really hard to argue one way or the other. (Some would argue that AM has crippled Frost.)

All we can really do is judge them both based off their performances and abilities. AM has some accuracy issues and difficulty finding open receivers. He also has a turnover problem, and many of those are on him as much as they are on things outside of his control. I think the real question or debate comes down to what's the biggest root cause.

I saw a lot of open receivers yesterday that AM didn't throw to. I saw bad decisions that four year starters don't make against mediocre defenses. I saw poorly thrown footballs to open receivers that a four year starter should be hitting. Obviously, it's a coaches job to put players in positions to win, but when AM is put into those positions... there's not enough confidence that he's going to make the play. IDK who deserves more blame for it but it's pretty clear at this point that AM can't do what needs to be done at a high enough level.

It is hard for me to argue that. The only thing that I can add is that this issue goes beyond stats, ability, x's and o's, etc. When he came in as a Freshman, I saw some issues that persist today but the way he played was much more free. He was a lot more accurate when he needed to be. As the years have gone by, those things started to fade. All the while, Frost's demeanor and confidence started to wane as well. The pressure is on so much internally that Adrian is carrying not only the pressure of being the QB here, but the pressure of saving Frost. Adrian can make throws and be accurate. When I saw the pass to Toure I saw a scared pass that was aimed in. Something he didn't show in the Spring Game. He was also slower in this game than he showed in the Spring game, and it tells me that he's overwhelmed. I then wondered how much pressure is on this kid beyond what's normal. I know that comes with the territory, but this has become so much about Scott that I think even the players lose themselves when they are here. Culp missing two PAT's tells me that there is an anxiety level beyond comprehension. This team really believed that this was make or break and it hurt them.

I understand it's a privilege to play somewhere with expectations. It just seems like this whole mess became about the well being of Frost and not the kids when they are the ones who have to perform. It reversed and neither are prepared to handle it.

Everyone asks and wonders if Scott Frost is happy here, but nobody stops to think if the players are. I think the fun of the game has been completely removed from the facilities of Nebraska because it's not about them. It's about the prodigal son, then the boosters and regents, then AD, then his administration, and then the fans, oh and then the players...

The issues that plague us now have been plaguing us since Solich but now they're compounded to the point of all these blunders, and it's so bad that our All conference kicker is freezing up during PAT's. I have a hard time believing Adrian is trash when despite all that's going against him, he flashes moments of brilliance that matches what your eye balls naturally tell you to believe. Four years from now, we are going to be so frustrated by how good of careers our current starters are going to have in the NFL.

Too MANY easy to fix problems that have NEVER been fixed. Im sick of it, same stuff.

The coach JOB is to MAKE SURE the kids are lined up correctly- they didnt. Thats part of what they get PAID to do. Terrible coaching on both the punt return and kick return teams. You ALWAYS check the depth of your deep guy. AND YOU ADJUST HIM.

I agree. It should be handled as soon as he trots out there.

The punt return rule is really pretty standard across football. Really simple to practice too. We used to put about 20 guys in a circle screaming and yelling, waving at the returner. He just wasnt allowed to take a step back.

Cam SLOWLY jogged out- lack of effort there<> He never got set up correctly- you dont align yourself on the 1 AND A COACH SHOULD HAVE CORRECTED HIM- on the spot. Total amateur hour.

But we need Mario and dont need a full times special teams coach- Right.

Yeah he should not have done that. Easily fixable issues. At some point, the players need to be really smart there too. They can't always look to the side line to know what to do.

  7. Don't let anyone fool you. Special teams is easy as far as how to align and what to do. If you have great athletes, that solves most of the issues. The issues we saw yesterday are mind crippling decisions. Guys pressing because things don't go well. Cam made that play thinking the moment was bigger than it actually was. Connor missed two PATs because kicking became crippling and his mind froze up. These kids are playing tense and scared. This is coming from the head man's demeanor.

Yeah honestly this has been a fear in the back of my mind the whole time with Frost. He wants this team to succeed too much and seemed to feel the pressure right away. The offense looked like the defense under Bo.

You're right. The pressure the program naturally has, along with the added pressure internally from Frost is an absolute burden on this team, especially on Offense.

  9. 1 hour ago, PasstheDamnBallGuy said:

I don't think it's the main issue or the start of the issue but it def adds to the toxic air the way some people act. Obviously the players should be able to put that out but that doesn't mean it wouldn't help to not have it.

Anyone feeling defensive about this should probably just think about why that may be. Nebraska fans are not the heros they think they are.

I agree to a certain extent. It doesn't help, and I made mention before that being in such a small and isolated community naturally has players and coaches playing "tight". However, Boneyard said it best, the fans are the reason Nebraska is still relevant and fruitful. Without us, Nebraska is Kansas.

If there is any point in which fans should side with the players, it's now. This is the best collection of players we have had since the late 90s. Some might not agree with that, but I would say that every regime since Tom has had missing parts on one or two sides every year. There aren't any glaring holes on this roster.

This is on Scott and Scott only. As a coach at Nebraska, whatever Scott touches, Scott worsens. He would be better off worrying solely about game management and making sure Nebraska is making the right decisions in terms of timeouts, challenges, fair catches, etc.

If you want a good barometer in how these players are feeling out there, look at Adrian's fluttering completion to Toure (nervous, aiming throw) and Connon Culp. That is tightness and feeling that each moment is bigger than it actually is. It's become crippling. That comes from the head man who is beyond desperate to win.

One last thing... I know people are ripping on Adrian really bad. I get it. I firmly believe that Adrian would be an All-American elsewhere. Being so tied to the hip of Frost, as the head coach of Nebraska has crippled Adrian's career beyond the imagination.

I really think fans need to bear some of the responsibility for this. Some people are way too quick to put down some kids that are just not as good at football as they would like them to be.

I think thats the part that needs to be reconciled by the players. Fans are going to be fans. That cannot be a distraction, and should be the expectation when you sign to play. The problem that I have is the administration, regents, donors, etc who seem to have different agendas and want to be the savior.

  11. If the head man goes, I am okay with it. In some ways, I think his legacy here matters too much and it has stripped all the fun away from the players. It should always be about them, and not Scott. If Nebraska is at a point of looking for a new coach, I would want a thorough process in finding the replacement. I do think a solid candidate is on the staff already if we choose to look internally also. This is a disaster beyond the imagination. We have really good players and kids on this team. 11-12 of the guys we saw yesterday will be playing on Sunday in two years. In addition to that, I think Strangelove hit it on the head, there is too much toxicity in this program that goes well beyond the locker room that has too much of an influence. This place has had the fun sucked out of it for decades.

I just disagree with the assessment, sir.

Iowa is mistake-free and has awesome special teams. In my opinion they actually have less of an identity on offense the past two years than at any other point in Kirk's career.

Iowa doesn't beat themselves. Nebraska does. Our identity is beating ourselves.

Yup, we have done it so long that it has become apart of our DNA.

We have to be honest and admit that the problems with Nebraska Football are deeper than just Frost and his ineptitude. Yes, he and his staff should be fired immediately. But the issues with Nebraska Football run deep into the Athletic Department. There are a lot of clowns in North stadium, and frankly some boosters too.

Nebraska needs to hit a total reset button, not just with the staff on the field. Fire and replace every single person not named Trev Alberts.

Excommunicate any and every booster who does anything other than write big checks. If they make so much as a suggestion about what Gatorade flavor we should use on the sideline, ban them for life.

The rot here runs deep. And unless they find it and get rid of it, it'll come back and plague the next staff.

You have to start here. The environment at Nebraska is so toxic that it bleeds into the locker room. It's too small of a community to not play into the heads of players and coaches.

  14. He has really good footwork even in distress. He looks off defenders a lot and is really accurate in his completions that I could see on tape. The ball doesn't jump out of his hand but he appears to be really dialed into the position and can really move too. I actually like his throwing motion because you can't get a sense of where the ball is going until it's already out of his hand.

  15. I think Notre Dame would listen to the BIG if they called. They're going to have to join a conference, and historical backlogs seems to be a thing of past. Notre Dame coming to the BIG would solidify that conference. If they go to the ACC, those others schools are operating in SEC country and if one leaves, the ACC is done. Eventually, with the BIG's relationship to the West Coast, I can see them eventually getting CA presence (which would benefit ND). The ACC is in no man's land.

In the last 2 years I have been hesitant to drink the kool-aid and buy into the hype by the local sports writers, just because it seems annually there is a let down and once the curtain rises on the gridiron we are seen the true product, which isn't very good. But this year, seeing the videos of the players, they actually look like Big Ten football players. They look bigger and stronger, they look like athletes. Which is something much different then the past 10 years of Nebraska football. For the entire decade we've looked slower and smaller than just about any of our conference opponents.

And those teams won many more games.

it is all I have left to run on when it comes down to it. I do think we will be better this year, I really do. But I also thought last year wouldnt be as bad as it was.

I have to admit that if I am being honest, with the kind of 22-35 players Nebraska has at the top, I would be disappointed at 7 wins. Say what you want about where we have been, but there is just too much talent now to not achieve 9-10 wins. This is if coaching or development is not the issue. So with that, if they don't, I can't see it ever working. Nebraska has bonafide dudes on both sides of the ball. .500 is sort of a joke but then I completely understand why it's taken so seriously. This is the most astonishing program in this regard. We have to play up to our potential.
