  1. I haven't seen a comparison to the USC penalties that came down 2 years ago on this thread. So, is the OSU punishment more or less fair than the USC punishment from 2 years ago.

ESPN had a guy on last night saying OSU got off easy considering the number of players involved, the level of coaching that knew about the violations, and that the ring leader totally escaped punishment. Yeah, these were tattoos and cars, not a $750K house for Toilet Paper's parents, but still, Tressel knew about it and didn't report it.

I could go either way and ultimately OSU and USC will turn out just fine. I'm interested to hear the responses.

Are you saying that Todd McNair (USC Assistant coach) didn't know about what was going on with Reggie Bush? The fact that USC involved agents and high profile athletes in TWO different sports is what got USC in more trouble. If someone on the OSU basketball team were involved with the same stuff as the football players, the hammer would have been really dropped on OSU.

I'm not saying anything. You made your point, though, that an assistant coach knowing about Reggie Bush is worse than the head coach at OSU knowing about TP & the other guys.

No, that isn't my point, There was contact between a student athlete and an agent and money changed hands. Add to that, a paid school official knew it happened and did nothing about it. It doesn't matter if you are the head coach or a running backs coach, when someone paid by the school knows, he has an obligation to bring that information to his superiors.

  3. Came across a tweet yesterday from a sports writer (name escapes me at the moment) suggesting that the NCAA should get more creative in punishments by fining the institutions. He felt that if the NCAA started hitting schools in the wallet instead of making current players pay for failures that happened in the past (scholarship reductions, bowl bans, etc), it might make schools redefine how they operate their compliance departments. I guess the motivation would be that if you're sitting on a mountain full of athletic department $$, you'd best make sure your compliance department is on top of everything, or else the NCAA will start taking $$ from said mountain.

That works in theory but you have people running some of these programs with low morals. A school could set aside money for the shady stuff they do. So basically you are buying the right to cheat.

In essence the bowl ban does just that and more. They lose out on the money they could have eared from a B1G championship game appearance and a BCS appearance if they were so fortunate to make it to one or both of those games.

  4. Is this common or am I blowing it out of proportion?

Well you certainly seem to be confused, Frank Solich coaches Ohio.

    .

This is listed (now) in the B1G forum so I didn't expect much confusion...

That being said, I have never been able to accept any time someone/thing demands that 'the' be put in their name . It always came off as pretentious. Especially when you have six campuses.

But hey, 'Ohio' is still more than you ever got out of Schembechler.. :-)

That may be true outside of Ohio but whenever someone in Ohio says "Ohio" (when talking about colleges) they think of the school in Athens. When talking about Ohio State people say "Ohio State" or "OSU" and sometimes "tOSU".

  5. I think Hoke deserved it this year but the funny thing about this reward is Jim Tressel NEVER won it. Say what you want about the way his tenure at Ohio State ended, but he put together some great years at Ohio State. At least Kirk Ferentz didn't win it again. I don't understand why everyone loves him so much as a coach.

  6. I cant belive I use to root for OSU. I am disgusted and may have to root for Michigan; they may be elitist a$$hole$, but atleast they dont condone cheating and paying players like they do up at OSU.

The funniest part about this is that Michigan is still under probation for cheating.

Technically cheating yes. What was the offense:

Probation for practice and training violations. Rodriguez failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance with NCAA rules.

It can be argued that Rodriguez failed to motivate his players. Rich Rod failed with the same team that went 10 - 2 with Hoke at the helm.

I just dont see that the same as other money scandals in CFB.

Well the Ohio State thing wasn't really a money scandal. Anyone who owned those items would be able to get that same amount of value from them. The Ohio State scandal was the lie, not the money.

I somehow doubt the fans capped their purchases at fair market value, or that any Buckeye could get car deals like that.

And yes you do punish the players and fans that had "nothing to do with it", or else you leave the Miamis on probation for 30 years.

You do know that the only thing found to be true was the trinkets for tattoos right? If I had a pair of gold pants, I could easily get $1000 for them around Columbus. All the car purchases were legit as deemed by the Ohio BMV (DMV in some other states) and were found to be within normal ranges for the vehicles they sold. In fact the dealership made average profits on every car sold.

You punish the fans that had nothing to do with it? That is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. So is punishing players who did follow the rules.

The NCAA also took issue with some pay that Posey got on a summer job.

  7. so one coach cheats and the school is able to bring in a better coach? I think the NCAA should implement a 1mil limit for their head coach for the next 4 years. That would stop them from doing crap like this. I use to respect OSU, now they are no different than Texas to me. They can cheat, get caught and it doesnt matter.

Hopefully they get the death penalty so we can all laugh.

You really think OSU will get the death penalty? Seriously?

Also, why do you really want the NCAA to have that much say in your program? Telling you how much you can spend on a coach? They are no better than any of the coaches or administration found at the member institutions.

I don't get why you are so pissy about another school hiring a coach. You don't know if he will be a flop or a success. Every situation is different.

No, i dont think OSU would get the death penalty and probably doesnt deserve it. Yes I think the coach's salary should be penalized. Administration failed to monitor the players AND coaches, the coach(es) lied and failed to monitor/report their players, and the players took money and benefits for years. All three levels failed, all three should be impacted. How Gene kept his job is astounding and I think speaks volumes about about the administration and possibly the culture at OSU.

Yes I think if you break the rules, have documentation on several incidents for multiple players over several years.... yes the NCAA should be up in your business. You have an Administration that says its too hard to control your boosters and players...... yet a LOT of other schools can do it. I know some SEC and Texas schools do the same crap, but this isnt the SEC or Texas.

Why am I pissy? Because you shouldn't get a better coach becasue your administration couldnt monitor its player or its head coach. OSU got the benefit from using 5 players that should have been inelligible for years (Pryor has been making money on the side since he was a freshman) and who knows how many countless others that no one ever found out about over the years? You guys got all those wins, got to play the in Nat Champ and all those nice bowls and got wins over other teams when you shouldnt have. Yet, the fan base seems to have little to no remorse for it. Its like: hey its ok, other schools do it. Lets go get a 5mil a year head coach and pretend like it never happened.

Would I be singing the same tune if this happened at Nebraska? HELL YES I WOULD!!! Here, its about pride. What pride is there in winning if your not doing it honestly? You would see the majority of Husker fans holding their school, students, administration and its coaches accountable for their actions..... instead of acting like its trying to sweep it under the rug.

As I have stated, I have rooted for OSU and was rooting for Fickle to hold you guys together. Maybe this was just a few guys making bad choices; but everything the administration has done or not done, has many outsiders questioning OSU's culture up there. Is it no better than many of the SEC and Texas teams? At one point, I thought I knew the answer, now I am not so sure.

As for Meyey; dont play coy with me. Everyone here knows he is probably in the top 3 coaches int eh game today. Not just the best coach avaiable, but one that could take any top 20 team to a Nat'l championship in the next 5 years. Hell at OSU or even here at Nebraska, he could win a NC within 3 years. So, dont play that crap with me that he might suck...... we all know it was a home run for OSU.

Like i said, if your administration had even pretended to care during any of this, perception would be much different to those outside of Ohio.

    .

What do think Ohio State should do? Give up and not have a football team since a group of people broke the rules. That just asinine. Every school has skeletons in their closet. It is just a matter of time before their sins are brought into the light. Don't give some holier than now crap about how much Nebraska is cleaner than anyone else. You can say Nebraska does everything the right way but you really don't know and you don't know what your reactions would be. It only takes one person screwing up bad enough.

Smith should have been gone right after Tressel, I will agree with you there.

  8. so one coach cheats and the school is able to bring in a better coach? I think the NCAA should implement a 1mil limit for their head coach for the next 4 years. 9. Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma, Ohio State, USC, Michigan......etc.

They are all the same when it comes to football. Maybe not with NCAA allegations but when it comes to the football program being bigger than the school. The football team and university might be bigger than current players and coaches. Everyone can be replaced.

  10. And, those OSU posters here are setting us up... they are saying that their team sucks so that when they beat us they can all the more really tell us how bad NU is. Or... if NU wins that they proved nothing. Yet again a reason why this game is so critical.

No we are not. Unless Nebraska is as bad as Akron or Colorado, which they are not, OSU's offense won't score much. Beating OSU this year won't prove that Nebraska is good but it will show they can beat a team they should beat. Then your next game will be that much more important and OSU will continue with their tail spin of a season.

  11. OSU getting Posey and Herron isn't going to help you guys out much.

Trust me, they burned us last year.

OSU needs Posey to come up big since our WR core is so young and can't get separation. Must suck to be a freshman QB running for his life and no where to throw the ball.

  12. Didn't Ohio State win the Big Ten the last six years? The same Ohio State who just got crushed by Miami? The same Miami who just lost to Kansas State?

Yes and nothing happened in Columbus this off season [rolls eyes].

So when is Wisconsin going to step up to the big leagues? I mean, they really haven't won anything lately.
